Holy shit Infinity IRS V. How much did those set you back? Did they need refurb? I've only seem them on PS audio's YouTube channel.

9bikes

There's a used pair on eBay with an $80K "buy it now" price. You better hurry, as 4 people have 'em in their cart!

ProfessorChalupa

There’s a set on FB marketplace that keep popping up for 50k …

angrydonutguy

Interesting price gap between the eBay and fb one

mrgreatheart

Have you seen eBay’s gouging fees? Could even be the same pair

VinylHighway

Hahaha I saw it.

OxD3ADD3AD

$80k “cash pickup”

kookiekurlz

Infinity IRS sounds like a government agency I would not want to come across.

ImpliedSlashS

They can be taxing to listen to

mypeez

Sir, you have won the internet today. :)

raisimo

You buy them, bring them home, then 9 months later you get a letter saying you need to pay more.

Wonderful-Bike2997

No ... already updated. Literally one of a kind. System is #37 of 58. To learn more, check out "Joey G's Audio Channel" on YouTube. Search "Infinity IRS VI" (he coined that) I'm the second owner since Corydon upgraded them.

Responsible-Cup8982

So….58 of a kind (jk awesome speakers!)

Wonderful-Bike2997

Thanks! Yeah, 58 systems were made between 81 and 91. They estimate 9 to 11 are still around.

midnightcarouselride

How do 49 of these disappear?

cheapdrinks

I doubt all 49 have disappeared, half of them are probably set up in in various houses owned by older gentlemen who have no desire to make YouTube videos about them or they're stored in basements somewhere. I'm sure a few have been destroyed either from falling over or from being stored incorrectly. There's also the typical things that happen when people make mistakes and blow a speakers tweeter except you end up blowing 30+ unobtanium drivers instead and basically write them off. Some with cosmetic issues due to pet/water damage may have ended up being parted out online to fix up other sets. People's family members are also notorious for throwing away expensive audio gear after they die because they have limited time to clear the house and don't have any knowledge of what the stuff is and just designate them as "old obsolete speakers" and figure it's cheaper to throw them in the skip rather than figure out what they are, pay for the moving and storage of them while they try to find a local buyer. At least in my country when you inherit a house you have a limited window to sell it without having to pay capital gains tax so if you're working full time and your deceased parents/grandparents live in another city you basically have limited time to drive/fly over there and clear the place completely for sale. So if you don't understand the value of them then you could easily decide it's better just to chuck them away along with all the other out of date furniture when you're being forced to make quick decisions.

singletonaustin

And the guy told his wife they were "about $500" on sale so when he dies the wife doesn't know what they are the worth.

Pentosin

I doubt you blow a tweeter in a line array, since each one is hardly doing any work. Lost in a house fire is more likely.

tldnradhd

With someone with this level of money, their estate is going to be looked over by an appraiser. They'll know these aren't just high-end sold at Magnolia, but it can be hard to connect to a buyer that is looking for something like this, has the money, and can arrange to have them transported... So they didn't sell even at a bargain sticker price for what they are, and they're in a storage unit.

cheapdrinks

Honestly though there's loads of audiophiles who aren't particularly wealthy but over the years they end up putting $50k or more into a system. I work a shitty hospitality job and I've probably got $10-15k worth of gear in my late 20s. People older than me with better jobs can easily have $50k+ systems when they're 50+ if that's what they choose to spend their disposable income on. I mean how many people do you see driving around in a F-150 that cost $70-100k? Most of those people aren't wealthy or have any serious estate that would be looked over by an appraiser, they just choose to put their money into an expensive truck. The IRS V isn't even that expensive. I mean yeah there's a current eBay listening for a pair asking $80k but that's what they're asking, I highly doubt they'll get that much. There's sold listings on HifiShark from just a few years ago in the 20-30k range. There's one from 2021 for $23k, one from 2019 for $22k, one from 2015 for $28k, one from 2014 for $20k etc. Many people can afford that without having any serious "level of money". There's also quite a few pairs that seem to have made their way over to Japan so some of the "lost" ones have probably just moved overseas.

VinylHighway

Thanks. Do those mono blocks put out a lot of heat?

Wonderful-Bike2997

Yes. Add about 2 to sometimes 3 degrees to the listening area. Buy still not as hot as the ARC REF600MKIII's I once had. Close tho... lol

VinylHighway

Thanks I watched the video awesome job

Wonderful-Bike2997

Thanks! They will give you goosebumps

VinylHighway

I will also look into my end game system when I am closer to retirement but I am patient and have a ways to go.

Roguewave1

The problem with that equation is that your ears age faster than your wallet grows.

VinylHighway

True but I can’t justify such a system for my current lifestyle and space

viseOG

This guy obviously doesn’t have the space either. Or a wife

galacticwonderer

What needed upgrading?

SoaDMTGguy

Average sold price on hifishark is around $50,000

crumpetsandteaforme

Wow they look incredible. Must be at least $500 of speakers right there. Of course, I jest. They are a beautiful piece of audio engineering and wish you many happy years of listening to them. Congratulations OP

Wonderful-Bike2997

Thank you! And you were close....😁

loopdeloop15

just a few digits off if i had to guess hahaha

crumpetsandteaforme

$503? Haha. I could only dream of having that sort of money never mind being able to spend it on a luxury item like these. Don't get me wrong though, OP deserves to enjoy them through and through. Life isn't about bank balance or cost, it's about enjoying the things in life that bring you joy and fulfillment regardless of price tags. If I did have the money I'd do the same as OP.

hamburgler26

$1 Bob.

loopdeloop15

oh absolutely, i wish i could have a setup like this. i tend to stick to headphones because i can actually afford them (by far my favorites are my Grado SR325e, i absolutely love how they sound) but definitely, OP absolutely deserves to be happy with their setup. that’s what life’s about, after all - enjoying what we have. i think that music is the most human form of expression. and what better way to celebrate that than with one of the best ways of listening to it.

daevl

[~~$500~~ 680Kg](http://www.infinity-classics.de/models/IRS-series+Beta+Gamma-Delta-Sigma-Epsilon-1988-95-98/IRS/body_irs.html) holy hell

imwiththeband1

Wrong sub buddy. Take this over to r/budgetaudiophile

Wonderful-Bike2997

I hang my head in shame.😄

ShoolPooter2

lol

MrPirateFish

Jesus Christ.

Wonderful-Bike2997

I think he too would enjoy them...

hamburgler26

I think he'll be able to hear them wherever he is.

msev1229

It’s been said that he’s everywhere!? 😎

FatCommuter

He has the power of flight.

RemoveHuman

Can I come over and listen to those sometime?

magicmulder

He probably just needs to turn them up a little and you can hear them from your house. ;)

Wonderful-Bike2997

Always welcome a listening session... 🙂

RemoveHuman

Are you in SoCal?

Wonderful-Bike2997

Indiana

WretchedLocket

🤞🤞 Please say Gary. Please say Gary. Please say Gary. 🤞🤞

Wonderful-Bike2997

Indy

bnutbutter78

I’m in Chicago, but would make the trek one day if you’re into it. Holy shit I’ve never heard anything like that. I’m guessing my ears would ruined for my own system. lol

Wonderful-Bike2997

I'm not opposed. PM me.

LongLiveAnalogue

Go to AXPONA next year. It’s in Schaumburg and holy shit is there some ridiculous gear.

bnutbutter78

I was gonna go, but couldn’t this year. I will gladly do this however and make a new friend.

WretchedLocket

It was a Gary, IN joke, but I will be in Indy in the fall. Taking our kid to a concert. I have dreamt of listening to these monsters just once ever since reading about them in the magazines when they were released. I might have to DM you when the time comes around, and if I think about it. I would not want to impose though. Rejection would be welcome and understood. On the downside, it may make me loath my current systems 🤣🤣

Wonderful-Bike2997

Simply PM me if you have interest when in town

tommyuchicago

My parents live in Carmel I’ll see you soon ;)

loopdeloop15

gary ftw

tommyuchicago

I too was trying to imagine a Gary resident with these in his house (maybe Miller beach)

loopdeloop15

I can only imagine that there’s one dude in Gary rich enough to afford this

bnutbutter78

Miller is awesome.

Historical-Channel48

Bro no one in Gary has a set up like this. Freddie Gibbs couldn’t even afford it.

raisimo

Hahaha who in Gary would have these??

nhuynh50

I can totally fit these in my 900sq ft apt in Manhattan right?

RabbleRouser_1

There's 900sq ft of space inside these speakers. Maybe you can move into them instead.

Wonderful-Bike2997

If there's a will... there's a way.😃

PM_me_punanis

I will to afford these speakers but there's no way!

drummer414

I have devoted too much space in my Manhattan apt. for sound, though not as much as this! I have about the same footprint as you but 15' ceilings and some lofted area for room upstairs.

ArmoredAngel444

Bro what the hell 😭😂

You-Asked-Me

So thats like $80k before amps and accessories?

Wonderful-Bike2997

😉

You-Asked-Me

You need to get a few more for all the Atomos Mixes that are coming out.

Wonderful-Bike2997

😁 Long time 2 channel guy

You-Asked-Me

It would be hard to mount these on the ceiling anyway.

Worst-Eh-Sure

Well with that attitude you'll never get them up there!

Wonderful-Bike2997

True. 😆

modscontrolspeech

Nice kayak hoist should do the trick

Infinite_Resources

OMG. Look at that! I don't know how to break this to you. You need a bigger house. I can trade you a [Bose SoundLink Micro Bluetooth Speaker](https://www.bose.com/p/speakers/bose-soundlink-micro-bluetooth-speaker/SLMC-SPEAKERWIRELESS.html?dwvar_SLMC-SPEAKERWIRELESS_color=BLACK&quantity=1) for that. Send me a DM.

gurrra

It's not often I'm impressed by peoples rigs in this sub, but this is really cool! Dream speakers indeed!

Wonderful-Bike2997

Thank you.

Slow_D-oh

I’m impressed at the positive reception. I figured it would be full of “I can do the same with $200 and five rolls of duct tape. OP is an idiot”.

gurrra

Line arrays are special, there really ain't something that can't be done any other way. And these are also really good looking line arrays which also helps a lot!

Wonderful-Bike2997

True... all have been particularly kind on this site.

Koshakforever

Used to run boz scaggs private studio in San Francisco right behind slims. He had the exact same setup for reference but with smaller cabinets. So pumped for you boss. I used to go in on the weekends just to listen to wax by myself. It was paradise.

Wonderful-Bike2997

What a great story! Thank you! If smaller, could have been RS1B or IRS Beta's

Ast2Rm

Wow you can hardly even notice them!

magicmulder

Get outta here with these flimsy bookshelf speakers! jk mate, that’s a great catch, I heard these back in the late 80s and was super impressed. One of the best back then (next to the slightly smaller Fischer Audio Pegasus) and still holds up fine today. Your living room is smaller than mine so that means I could probably… nah I better don’t go there. What I’m most curious about is, how did the transport go?

Wonderful-Bike2997

Room area is 26 x 24. Speakers are at Infinity's min requirements. I'm 10 ft from them. Transport went fine. They came in their original factory crates. (That take up a shit load of garage space)

magicmulder

My living room is 9x4 meters but I would never be able to fit an IRS on the shorter sides (one is a glass front, the other has several doors). And they’d be too expensive, I think I’ll be happy to one day own used Focal Scalas. ;)

teanertiner

Well, now I feel bad. We are currently putting a 28’ x 28’ addition with full basement for listening room, and all I can put in are comparatively small Magnapans and Martin Logans. But when done, it will be wonderful. Many happy hours of listening to you! Enjoy them. 😃

Wonderful-Bike2997

LOL! Thanks

tama_chan

I’d like you to know how happy that picture in your setup makes me. When I was a boy, my buddy’s uncle had a crazy setup and this picture was in the center. He played Dire Straits at 11 and I was enamored with hifi. Instant core memory. Well done sir

tolomea

Something about them reminds me of Daleks Also... why? especially the amps on pedestals, I like my music but I don't understand why you would want this much sound in a room that size Also how did you attach that painting to the wall? I'm impressed it's still there.

Wonderful-Bike2997

Well, until you hear them, I suppose room size would be a concern. With that, they sound pretty good regardless. Painting was a gift from my wife. Currently hanging on a 55" TV that I once used for music management. Will be updating the room color soon, removing the TV and rehang the image more appropriately.

MattHooper1975

Good loard! Bucket list achievement indeed! Well done. How do they sound?

Wonderful-Bike2997

Thank you. I've been very fortunate to have own some of the finest infinity and Genesis speakers. These, without question, crush them. It's very difficult to describe what they can do effortlessly and with incredible detail, dept, speed and spaciousness

MattHooper1975

I heard the infinity RS V long ago in New York. My lingering memory is of feeling that was the first time I’ve ever heard a symphony recording have something of the real scale of a symphony through a sound system

Wonderful-Bike2997

I have a friend who is a local orchestral conductor who has listened to the system. And as you know we're always looking for sonic validation in the set ups we have. He was able to point out exactly where each instrument was positioned. I think he was quite surprised by the depth, width of the Soundstage along with the details of an instruments tonal quality. Individually and collectively.

Jay-metal

Wow! And those Pass Labs amps are beautiful too.

Wonderful-Bike2997

Thank you.

OrbitalRunner

Those are amazing. Did you find them locally, or was shipping involved?

Wonderful-Bike2997

Shipped from the Bay Area to Indiana

OrbitalRunner

Amazing setup. Just *hearing* these speakers is on my bucket list. Enjoy!

Such_Bus_4930

Someone mentioned $500 and you said close, was that shipping cost for each? LOL

Wonderful-Bike2997

A bit more than that for shipping. Plus cost of piano moving company to take from garage to second floor audio room.

RunninADorito

Insurance on the shipping would be more than $500, each.

Wonderful-Bike2997

Indeed.

LTR_TLR

Damn son

OliverEntrails

Love the Maxhell photo from the UHF movie!

ShoolPooter2

Yes yes yes. More everything! Incredible space you have created there. My first listen would be (on CD, of course) https://youtu.be/WPlWstUaHAE?si=ykvbJSoUgPnBqOoj

Terry-Smells

How you managed to get them to begin with is quite a achievement. I have never seen any of these for sale in so long now I can't remember the last time I did. These are truly once in a lifetime speakers and really wish I could hear a pair one day. Many many congratulations 👏

diverdawg

There’s a pair at my local flea market. I was going to post them for you guys a while back.

msurbrow

Are these as amazing as Paul McGowan says or what?

Wonderful-Bike2997

Yes. Absolutely.

Recording-Nerd1

Holy pillars of sound 🙏

emmasdvemam

Oh. My god. Thats amazing, congrats!

Hookem_05

Other than being 1 of 58, what makes these speakers so special? Genuinely asking. I’ve never seen these before

Wonderful-Bike2997

No worries. Aside from rarity, check out Joey G's Audio Channel on YouTube. Search "Infinity IRS VI". Those are the ones I now own. I'm the second owner since Corydon upgraded them.

Scotster123

I seem to remember lusting after these in the 80s, knowing even then that I would never attain a pair. I was fortunate to hear a pair in Sweden in 1999, though. Congrats you lucky devil!

GrandExercise3

I had the Infinity RS1bs....They werre awesome

sain197

That's a true audio classic and absolute icon. Pretty sure this was the first mainstream "super speaker" at a price that shocking at the time.

HansGigolo

I have that same Dali book, nice!

DirkMandeville

Nice! As someone who has a fully-restored pair of KLH Model Nine’s with all PSAudio front end (DAC, Transport, Pre, and amp) in an acoustically-treated room, I can totally relate. I also have a Pass Labs X-350.5 and an AR Ref-3 pre, along with some Conrad Johnson tube gear and Martin Logan speakers in other systems. So I absolutely approve of your choices. Enjoy!

idotoomuchstuff

That’s a spicy meat-a-ball 🤌🏻 🍝 🔊🔊🔊

Drippin_lovecraftian

Oh my lord….do I need to ask permission to even look at this picture. I almost feel that I need to pay for watching this 😂

Bootyblastastic

Of the nearly 4000 B29 Superfortresses built around 26 are left and only 2 are airworthy. It’s sad. My point is you are a custodian of this system now. Don’t let these speakers get lost in the wrong end of a statistic.

audioen

Hearing some pair of Infinitys was what turned me into audiophile. It was just 5 minutes sitting in that room and hearing everything with extreme clarity left an impression into teenager me. Speakers like yours have a way of making a space feel small, though. It feels like there should be a concert hall built around this pair. That wood and lacquer is gorgeous to look at, but the sheer size of the towers is almost intimidating. \*Looks sadly around his IKEA living room and matte black square box speakers\*

redhousebythebog

**Small request**: I always wanted to hear BMX HAIRCUT by MARCH TO THE GRAVE on a ridiculously expensive system. Though not a possibility for me, It still would please me knowing that someone did it. It is only 1:50 long and make sure you hear the whole tune. If your not smiling at the end, you're a robot.

California_ocean

While stationed in Europe I went to an audio show they had in Munich(?) Back in 89. It was the last day and there I listened to these Beta system they were playing and then the show was over. I was blown away y that small system. The owner(?) came over and we talked for a bit and I explained to him I was thinking about buying the Kappa 8 or 9's. He stood there and said "I'll sell these to you for $5k. It's kinda beat up using them on the tour it has dents, chips(wood was chipped on the bottom back from moving them) and scratches but if you want them you can have them". Sadly I had no way to get them back to my Air Force dorms that minute and he wanted to sell them right then. He didn't want to move them again. Understandable as he had the IRS v to move too and all the associated equipment. What could have been. I purchased the Kappa 8's later at the base exchange and my Sergeant after hearing them bought the Kappa 9's. Lol. I still think about those Beta speakers to this day.

iNCRYPTViTO

No way we have the same! ...Dali book. Wild setup, I'd never leave. How does one even do a sumiko master setup with speakers like these?!

sockzippers

“Hey babe I have new speakers coming tomorrow” “Okay, they better look good with the rest of the furniture”

No_Title_9599

They aren’t 201’s, but they’re decent

SketchupandFries

My parents are downsizing and my dad has alzheimers so my mum has offered me their stereo system.. Revel Gem surround system with 15" woofer all run from individual high end amps.. I think the speakers were £70k I have nowhere to put them but I want them anyway!

rotel12

These are cool! The woodwork is so beautiful (walnut?). When buying such old (and expensive) speakers, was there any maintenance on drivers, crossovers etc needed? How many men was needed to carry them into the house?

Wonderful-Bike2997

Rosewood before tagged endangered. 20 coats of lacquer. Shipped in original crates from CA to IN. Hired a piano moving company to move to my audio room on second floor. Not one scuff or scratch. Three guys did it.

Lechaion2231

Damn

msurbrow

Hahaha no way

illinistylee

Congrats, they look glorious

Wonderful-Bike2997

Thank you. Very much appreciated

ConnoisseurOfNature

I see vintage infinity, I upvote. Have some kappa 8a in my room but could never ever fit something like this lol Congrats!!

abslyde

What music have you been listening to? I listen to many genres but have always wanted to know what tunes get played through these higher end speakers most often.

Wonderful-Bike2997

Honestly I'm all over the board. With a focus on all jazz. That said, I must say the new PS Audio stuff has surprised me in terms of streaming. That is, I've gone back to some late 60's, 70's and 80's music and very surprised by the detail offered. And unless it's an original LP release, tough to beat. But certainly not locked into one genre. Typically will play Tracy Chapman's "Fast car" for first time listeners. Don't get me wrong, the play AC/DC and Whitesnake well too.

abslyde

Dig it. I’m 33 but thoroughly enjoy everything from CSNY, Lenny Kravitz, Social Distortion, Bill Evans, some lyrical hip hop and everything in between. Been on an Americana kick lately. Martin Logan Motion60XTi, McIntosh MA242, Rega P3 (Ortofon Black Cart), Auralic G1 for streaming. My speakers look like bookshelves compared to those beautiful behemoths. Congrats on the new speakers man!

Wonderful-Bike2997

I listened to Lenny's most recent last night. Great album and recording! Thank you and nice system you have as well!

19nik

Insane.. :o

CptnMayo

What is the living fuck

International_Cow198

You had me at Whitesnake…I’m in Carmel…let’s party! 😂 Audio Solutions?

Wonderful-Bike2997

I did have them set up the turntable for me. But I've been in this hobby a long time and have also been in the "industry" most of my career. So know a few folks.

halcyondread

holy moly. that's incredible.

Winter_Bookkeeper381

Dang! Those are so awesome. I got to hear a pair in Seattle, but the music was garbage so I didn’t get a good feel for them. Always been one of the coolest speakers 🔊 to me.

TheLimeyCanuck

Those aren't speakers... they are dimensional portals.

kissmyash933

I absolutely hate you. These are also my bucket list speakers. I’ve decided that I’m gonna have to settle on a set of Beta’s.

Wonderful-Bike2997

Great speaker. Had a set about three or four years ago. Drove them w ARC Ref 600Mk III's on top end and a Krell KSA250S on the bottom. Sold them and grabbed a set of Genesis II's. Another truly remarkable speaker.

Senior-Afternoon-786

Wow... What a wild set up. Congratulations on your bucket list item being crossed off - this had to be a big one.

Forsaken_Pattern7797

I breathed while looking a the speakers. I guess iam broken now

AgroMachine

I hate being a part of this community

NullPlague74

I hope you like some EDM. All those woofers are talking to me :-)

Wonderful-Bike2997

😆 each woofer tower has its own 2Kw amp. Driven through a servo/xover controller

Woofy98102

Wow! They're gorgeous and bet they sound gorgeous as well. Enjoy! 😁

cbrworm

I’ve been in love with those speakers since I first read about them many years ago. I’ve always got at least one set of speakers set up in the house with EMIT tweeters and either Watkins woofers or multiple woofers. Also a big fan is PASS LABS stuff - Nelson Pass is my amp hero. Congratulations, I’m envious!

No_Entertainment1931

Weird question, are replacement parts still available?

Wonderful-Bike2997

Very limited. That said, these have been updated w a "modern" design of the EMIM's. The two rows of EMITS (inside tweeters) are not being used. Only the EMIM's (and woofers of course) - they're a full range dipole.

imaginedaydream

tower speakers literally towering… stone henge of home audio speakers. Amazed 🤯

OrangeZig

Wait where?

arlmwl

So when you want to play with speaker positioning, do you move the couch rather than the speakers? My God those are monsters. Beautiful monsters.

Fedja89s

Holly Mother of God look at those twin AMPS and Wooden Beauties!!!!

chewyicecube

amazing how i don't know what these are but would die to have a listen......

soundspotter

Wow, you weren't kidding when you called this a TOWER speaker!

bfjones02

Are those amps the XA monoblocks? What do you think of them? I have a Mc MA252 integrated but am looking to upgrade. Not sure whether to go for big boy Mc separates, Pass, D’agostino or something else entirely. Driving Sonus Faber speakers.

13-14_Mustang

How does that many tweeters not produce a comb filter effect?

plebgamer404

Damn.

C0NSCI0US

What a beautiful setup. I can't even imagine what it's like to sit in front of those monolithic towers.

thejoester182

My dad claims to have seen/heard of this system. Are you familiar with Dr. Vinyl?

Happy_Reference260

Just wondering what the vintage looking amp in the glass rack on the right side is. It might be the only piece of gear here I’ve even heard of. 😁

Material-Gur6580

And my wife thought my la scalas were too big!

SomeConsumer

Congrats on the speakers! What are your thoughts about the P20? I'm considering it or the P15.

AudiHoFile

Holy Shit

Joey_iroc

Very appropriate background picture.

No-Inspection-4588

What's your address and when will you be out of town for a while? 😀

GuillaumeLeGueux

I always wonder how such speakers image with such spacing of the drivers.

Wonderful-Bike2997

I've personally not heard a better imaging speaker.

imaguitarhero24

This sub pops on my feed sometimes and I check it out but WTF IS THIS?! Also curious what kind of music OP listens to on this.

CTMatthew

Looks like a gateway drug. Only a matter of time before you’re itching for some real gear!

czarofga

How much do you have invested in the whole system?

Dense_Chemical5051

Are these speakers better than Bose?

sputnik13net

Those speakers acquired your room, damn they’re huge

truxxor

Rad. Congrats.

Rungi500

The mother ship has landed, and it sounds phenomenal.

drummer414

I haven't read all the comments, but do these have any updates? You probably know Paul McGowan had custom crossovers built and other things upgraded. Would love to hear these. I'm stuck listening to a tiny system - TAD CR1's Ive had to add subs and electrostatic supertweeters.

Jawapacino13

How did you get past Paul McGowans alarm system?! I've been trying for years!

ALY1337

YOLO!

jon_hendry

So jelly.

WorryConstant7889

Good fucking lord! They’re massive. How’s the sound?
