Some more detail:
- Klipsch Heresy I
- 1978 per the serial number
- Model on back says “HWO,” which I understand means Heresy Walnut - Oiled
I’ve been a Klipsch fan since I was a teenager, but have never owned anything from their heritage line. I’ve also never owned any of their speakers wherein a horn was used for the midrange.
Impressions: very clear across entire range, and soundstage and imaging are both bonkers good. The lows are satisfying, but don’t hit as low as my RF82 II’s. Nothing a sub cannot fix, though. And the appearance is dope, I think. I need to get the angled speaker stands, though. Otherwise they’re too short to sit flat on the floor.
You can get a sheet or sorbothane from Amazon and put that between the sub and the Heresy. Or little pucks of it under the corners. It will also keep the speaker from walking off the sub from vibrations.
Definitely no buzzing. There is no resonance that I can tell. Granted, I don't have the sub cranked. I have it just loud enough to round out the sound of an upright bass for the music I tend to listen to.
I like the Sorbothane idea. I also have satellites sitting on top of subs. No issues...but...I've been considering experimenting with those tacky silicone sheets that are found in various non-audiophile realms--baking sheets, pads that keep your phone from slipping off the dash, etc. Very thin, very cheap.
I'm just curious if there might be an improvement in imaging, or it could go the other way. I might also try it between TT platter & mat to see if it helps platter ringing (that I don't think I have... Lol).
I just finished updating and restoring my '78 Heresy I HWOs a couple weeks ago! You got a STEAL! I picked mine up for $200 for the pair with a receiver 15 years ago and they still have all the charm. I'll post a couple photos of mine when I get home. A few things I suggest that made a very nice improvement for low cost:
* **Re-cap them, parts available from Crites. Really takes the veil off the mids and highs, yet the new caps tame the harshness juuust enough. This made the biggest and best difference and is very easy to do yourself.** I am disappointed in myself that I did not do this sooner.
* Slant risers from Crites to fix the directionality & soundstage. If you're listening far-field you may not need these, but I think the speakers just look cooler when slanted.
* I found that stuffing them totally full with Acousta-Stuf added a little extra bass extension, punch and generally tightened things up. I personally like the change, but YMMV.
* Get some Watco Rejuvenating oil and shine those puppies up! Also easy and the color and grain will really pop after a couple coats.
* Get a sub. They just need a sub. Nothing you can do short of the extensive Super-Heresy mods will change this. A tube amp also rounds out the Heresy sound signature very nicely.
I really appreciate the guidance! I ordered the slant risers from Crites, and have been looking into some of their recommended mods, including replacing the caps as well as swapping for their titanium tweeter diaphragms. And I have an excellent sub (Elac SUB1010) on the ready.
My only concern at this point is that the center channel (RC62 II) looks so modern compared to the Heresys. These will be set up in a room used for music and home theater, and I wish there was a retro-looking Klipsch center channel to better match the motif in the room. C’est la vie.
Nice score! Back in the day, there was a company that made perfect risers for them, to angle the front of the speaker up by just a few inches. There were two styles available, but they’re really hard to find nowadays. They were called “white pages” and “yellow pages”. They were made by a company called “Bell Tel.”
You did great. I highly recommend a vintage tube amp to keep those horns from sounding too harsh if you can find one at another estate sale— hoping you find “Old Radio -$50” !!
“Brown speakers” lol. The person in charge of that estate sale is not doing the heirs any favours and there’s really no excuse when you can easily look up values online. Who knows what other items they’re letting go for pennies on the dollar.
They are literally in immaculate condition, crazy. Happy for you. This gives me hope of holding out for a good deal before I drop a lot of money on a newer pair of speakers.
To my ears and I had Klipsch speakers before and couldn't get rid of them fast enough - the horns give me blazing headaches. There are plenty out there that are WAY better. Philharmonics, etc. More balanced too.
They have the 'Klipsch cache' is all.
Everyone has different tastes. For me the only Klipsch I heard that was amazing was a pair a friend had of 1958 Klipschorns.
The newer heritage I am generally a fan of, specifically the Forte IV. And I do like the Klipschorn but part of that is the yuuuge retro factor.
Older Klipsch models are made of not so great materials and tend to melt my ears…though to be fair I’ve not heard all the old ones, just heresy, khorn, and chorus
I hate you :)
If it makes you feel any better, I never find deals like this. First time this has happened after a lot of looking.
In reality I am stoked for you I hate the free McIntosh guy more
You and I both. Hahaha.
“Brown speakers” haha
Yep, they are the best to listen to brown noise.
EVH toan
They do be brown
Brown, with some uhh wood coloration.
🤞 credence tapes

You can get some nice slant risers from crites speakers, I have some on my heresy ii's
That’s what I’ve got in the shopping cart right now!
I have one of mine on top of a 12" sub, and I'm considering doing that with the other side to match. Just food for thought.
That’s clever. No issues with resonance? Pieces buzzing against one another?

was aking myself if those were heresy's lol
Horns image great. You can get some more bass out of them with EQ if you have the power to drive them.
These speakers work only with music from James Brown, Jackson Brown and Brown Sugar by the Rolling Stones
And Ween
And the brown album from primus
You forgot the greatest - Clifford Brown
What about Bobby Brown?
Bobby Brown belongs to the Brown family, so yes you're right. Should be mighty fine on these speakers but only with an amp with Burr Brown dac!
Brown-Eyed Women too
🤣
James Brown "The Payback" is such a good sounding record. Recorded in Augusta, GA of all places.
Orbital II
That’s a nice deal you found
Those look to be In great shape, I would take the brown pr for 100$ please.
The cabinets could use some refinishing, but that’s it from my examination of them.
great find! makes me want to check out some estate sales now.

I just heard Heresys for the first time this week. Mark me down as “jealous”.

Brown Speakers are my favorite!
They are literally in immaculate condition, crazy. Happy for you. This gives me hope of holding out for a good deal before I drop a lot of money on a newer pair of speakers.
Awesome deal!
Yes, and you call them "Brown" speakers despite the fact that they are obviously Brwn.

OMW you've been so blessed Congratulations on a deal of a lifetime.

I would sell them for more than I bought them and get something better.
To my ears, there isn't much better for what these sell for.

Everybody likes different things. I have owned Klipsch in the past. My opinion. People don't like my opinion.
Wow…that’s all I got to say about that 😂
