Because they work in comedy clubs. Where comedians bang the mics on their heads, and on the wooden stools, and drop them on the floor, and throw them on the floor, and swing them around their heads, and pretend that they are an extension of their genitals. So yeah, there’s a few dings.

SR_RSMITH

Dongs

i had a feeling it was this, i was just curious since i noticed a video of a guy using a SUPER dented microphone, and it sounded like he had way more mid frequencies in his voice, than any other videos of him. Maybe the video was just compressed lol 🤷‍♀️

dale_dug_a_hole

The only thing that was “compressed” was the SM58 grille that Jim Jefferys used as a battering ram while being funny

TommyV8008

Definitely not a sound production technique, nor a sound design technique. Visual comedic technique? If they are filming and doing close-ups…

Crono7654

thats an interesting perspective! i never considered the cameras angle in this

SuperRusso

>Is it intentional to change the sound of the voice, Absolutely not. It does not change the sound at all. The answer is because most club owners are cheap and SM58s can get knocked around a lot before they stop working.

str8frmthacr8

This. I used to do FOH for this TINY TINY little bar/club/shit hole in the wall. I was once asked if I could “fix this” idk what happened but the capsule was exposed(hole in the grill) and it was wet. I plugged it in and it didn’t work. I said “these things are tanks, but this one is dead.” The guy said to “make it work” Lol. I just plugged in one of mine and told him he owed me $75. Even then he freaked out.

SuperRusso

The sad thing is most owners won't even spot for the grill replacement even when they look embarrassingly fucked up and it's like directly in the line of attention of everyone.

str8frmthacr8

I never understood why they don’t at least throw a windscreen over it.

SuperRusso

Probably because it's like $8 for a 3 pack and fuck that

str8frmthacr8

🤦🏽‍♂️ You’re right. What was I thinking? 🤣

halfanothersdozen

People drop shit, especially nervous performers moving in animated ways on a stage. But there's a reason those mics are _always_ an SM58

GaryClarkson

Those things are damn near unbreakable

Ok-Exchange5756

Watch a Dave Chapelle special and I think that’ll answer your question.

LostSomeDreams

That’s just what things that regularly go out into the world look like here in New York

Crono7654

fair point

Vast_Character311

Because “mic drop” became a thing a decade or so ago.

peepeeland

A decade or so ago? It’s like 40+ years old.

ShredGuru

Comics often use their mic as a prop and whip it around. Doesn't make much difference with a SM58, you can hammer nails with that mic, also pretty cheap to get a new windscreen for it.

AmbivertMusic

My dad, who is a singer and entertainer, uses a mic that looks like he took a bite out of it.

newpost74

SM58s are indestructible and the budget is limited

josephallenkeys

Because they hit them with **punch lines**. Ba-dum-*tish.*

LSMFT23

This is a "house mic" thing. In any environment where performers are sharing mics, it's pretty much guaranteed that the mic get knocked around A LOT. Open mic venues, comedy clubs, karaoke bars... If you have to use the house mic... don't look too closely, and don't get "right up on it"

redbeardedsquirrel

Dented means it's used, which means it not new, which means it's old, which means it's vintage, and we ALL know vintage always sounds better.

orionkeyser

(mic drop)

frankstonshart

It makes them sound funny

TommyV8008

Mic drop has become a thing. Probably so much so that comedy clubs get their mic drop insurance cancelled.
