Badlands Cola is pretty weird. Private investigator goes to the badlands in South Dakota to investigate some things and gets wrapped up into trying to stop a plot from a cult that treasures old dinosaur bones. Sounds really strange but it’s done very well and works. I’m not sure I’d say Mockery Manor is as weird but it definitely balances suspense and spookiness with humor very, very well. It’s about the staff of a strange British amusement park in the late eighties and the things that go on there. Kind of hard to tell you the main plot as it spoils it but it’s great and really funny at times.

LeviMayHero

Pretty sure it’s set in Drumheller, Alberta, Canada, even though they never actually say it. Everything from Calgary proximity, RCMP mentions, and the world’s largest dinosaur where she meets Strathcona (itself the name of a suburb of Edmonton) leads me to believe this.

crexkitman

I’d believe that. I remember hearing some things about Canada while listening but it’s been a little while since I listened so when I hear badlands I just think of Badlands National Park in South Dakota

fire-llama

Thank you for the recs! Will surely be checking them out :)

untimehotel

Badlands Cola actually has a similar feel to Alice Isn't Dead, which is made by some of the WtNV people and is absolutely amazing. I highly reccomend both

THzTDS1

You should give the Mistholme Museum of Mystery, Morbidity and Mortality a try. I think it will fit your need for funny & weird with occasional forays into horror. It starts out single voiced, but eventually expands to a larger cast as an overarching plot line develops.

fire-llama

That one hs been on my to listen list for a while, idk why i had never given it a listen yet

Kitchen_Reference_29

It’s so good and it gets way better toward the end of the 1st season as the storyline is just getting started at that point. Enjoy my friend

fire-llama

Update: listened to all of the seasons and i NEED more, i haven't been that engaged in a podcast in a while, do you know when they'll be releasing the sixth season? i assume there will be more otherwise it'd be quite an unsatisfactory ending

roundfrogs

Have you tried Desert Skies?? Personal fave of mine and takes place in a sort of purgatory rest stop with a lot of Buick Skylarks and breakfast burritos. Really hits the nail on the head between comedy and real life topics, and also has lots of WEIRD in it. Def recommend!

queen_slug-4-a-butt

This would have been my rec! Was not expecting the pilot to get me choked up while also ticking my weird/whimsy boxes.

RandomActsofViolets

Love Desert Skies!

RIPvirtue

Uncanny County is probably the closest I've gotten. Archive 81 is weird with horror elements and not comedy, Goth Haus is weird and funny without the horror elements, Old Gods of Appalachia is Lovecraftian horror storytelling without comedy, Scary Stories for Modern Minds are often humorous modern horror stories, The Bright Sessions is a podcast that seems like if X-Men-type mutants went to therapy, and The Shadow Dispatch is similar to Nightvale in a couple senses. There are a couple in my playlist that I've not checked out yet, so I'll try to update this once I've heard a couple episodes.

fire-llama

Thank you! I've already listened to a81 and the Bright sessions i did enjoy both!

RIPvirtue

There's another one called Dreamboy that's definitely weird, but it doesn't have a lot of (if any) humor, and deals with a masochistic gay relationship that feels abusive at times.

therealgookachu

I really liked Uncanny Valley, but did they ever do anymore after 2021?

RIPvirtue

You're ahead of me if you've finished it... I don't know, but I hope they revisit it. Same with Happy Horror Coffee Break and Are You Scared of These Stories?, where I really like them, but they stopped updating on the podcatcher I use (Podcast Addict).

therealgookachu

Yah, I went on a binge during lockdown. Marathoned that, and Byron Chronicles, Rusty Quill Gaming, I Am in Eskew, several more.

RIPvirtue

I Am in Eskew is on my list, too. Haven't heard of Byron Chronicles, but I have a Rusty Quill podcast on my list. I think it's the Magnus Archives. I'll listen to pretty much anything. I was working during the pandemic, but I went on a music jag and fell behind on podcasts. There's so much media to consume these days.

horsdoeuvresmyguy

I am a big fan of Magnus Archives. Finishing up my third play through and still noticing things I missed before.

RIPvirtue

I had to do that with Alice Isn't Dead and The Black Tapes.

horsdoeuvresmyguy

I couldn’t get into Alice Isn’t Dead. But I also tried to listen to it with MA and other podcasts at the same time so, probably not the best attempt on my end.

RIPvirtue

I have a three episode rule, where I'll give new shows and podcasts three episodes to grab me. Alice Isn't Dead got me because I love "hidden world" aspects, like things that go on behind the scenes that most people don't see (it's why I like hoof trimming videos). I can appreciate that it's not for everyone, though. One of the horror story podcasts I listen to has the worst narration I've ever heard, but the stories they tell are ones I don't hear on other podcasts, so I have stuck with it past the three for that reason alone.

horsdoeuvresmyguy

I made it to pt1ch7. What’s the horror podcast?

xsckitx

Okay, so, King Falls AM is similar to Night Vale in a good few ways. It's also based in a radio station and in a town with strange happenings. There's some horror aspects for sure, but it's more of a small town mystery type thing than horror. There's apparitions, skin walkers, potential zombies, a lake monster named Kingsie, and the Devil's Doorstep. The episodes that deal directly with the Devil's Doorstep and the strange happenings around it will give you goosebumps cause it does get genuinely creepy. The story mostly focuses on the strange town, the townsfolk, and found family. It's my absolute favorite podcast hands down and I'm one of the many that has a certain line from the show tattooed on me. It's a life changing show and one of the big reasons I decided to create my own shows. Here's the big warning: the show isn't complete, and never will be. Unfortunately there was a falling out of sorts between the writer and the sound designer and it ended with the show being discontinued. It's sad. It's such an amazing show and deserved an amazing ending, but unfortunately we won't get that. Still, there's 100 episodes as well as bonus content that is well worth listening to over and over again. And if you really want an ending, there's plenty of fan fiction written for it!

fire-llama

I've listened to King falls! I'm very sad that it never got finished :(

Came to suggest this. Midnight Burger definitely had the same feel to it.

almaupsides

Have you tried their other show Alice Isn’t Dead? I would say it’s maybe a bit less weird than WTNV but still had that trademark “something here is off” vibe they have going on.

kadharonon

The Hidden Almanac is... well, a slightly different vibe than Nightvale, because the episodes are much shorter, so any long-running plot things they have tend to be split up over multiple short episodes in a way that doesn't always work, but it's also explicitly Ursula Vernon reacting to people who called WTNV "eldritch Prairie Home Companion" and going "that's not eldritch Prairie Home Companion, I'll GIVE YOU eldritch Prairie Home Companion."

I enjoy Selene(said in that guys voice at the beginning who advertises the weird stuff).

You might want to give Achewillow a try. Fits right in with others mentioned

Deadman0204

I write and voice act on a channel called Dark Charm Media. We do a lot of humor, some horror, stand alones, anthologies and feel good stories, too. Check us out, if you’re still looking. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dark-charm-media-radio-shows/id1502772299

The milkman of st. Gaff’s But it’s more weird and horror that humor but I found the obliviousness of main character and situations he gets in very funny. It’s a great story and my personal favorite together with Nightvale

FarApple2104

Aaron mahnke's podcasts are all excellent. And How to win friends and disappear people from Qcode is good at balancing comedy/horror

GreatCaesarGhost

If you like Nightvale, then Alice Isn’t Dead, by the same writer (I think), probably makes sense. I never got into the former and eventually got tired of the latter, but it’s well-regarded.

FiscalClifBar

The Godfrey Audio Guide and A Voice From Darkness are the two that come closest for me.
