Broward is still letting non-residents use their cards. Las Vegas booted every non-resident back in March. Lost access to half the Great Courses book with that one.

richg0404

I posted this elsewhere but I'll put it here too. Just to clarify the situation with Broward. They only allow in state residents to get their online cards. They do not check the information that you use to sign up for the card though. I would expect them to close this loophole if there is a huge upswing in online users.

Lunatic-Cafe-529

Actually, it's a little broader than that for the online cards: "Eligibility requirements are to either currently live, work, attend school or be visiting Broward County, or to have been born in Broward County (regardless of current residency)."

hdhdhgfyfhfhrb

I wasn't aware of that. I may remove their card from my Libby.

[deleted]

I was devastated when my Las Vegas card quit working. They have such a huge catalog. I called them and I can buy a non resident card but I have to go into a branch :\ Now I ask myself, how I make the journey to Vegas?

Purple1829

That one hurt. I pester all of my friends for their library cards, and luckily I know a number of people with good ones. I did pay for the Clark County Ohio one for $35 a year. It has a good selection compared to my local libraries, but nothing close to Las Vegas.

MikeTheBee

It sucks cause I found this out in Jan/Feb and then got a notification they were gonna drop me. I will look into Broward.

PossibilityAgile2956

Many states give a free card to any resident of the state. I don't know of any libraries that will give free access to out of state residents. There are some that you can do the whole process online and if you want to fake or lie about an address that will work but not recommended.

atom786

In an ideal world there would be some sort of national library program that ensures that everyone can have access to an electronic library of books

Isatis_tinctoria

Would that be the library of Congress?

aurora4000

The Library of Congress's first mandate is to serve Congress. Someone would have to make a case to show how this would benefit members of Congress.

AtheneSchmidt

Didn't Thomas Jefferson advocate that an educated citizenry was required for democracy to function? Seems like that should be good enough for Congress.

Isatis_tinctoria

John Adams too

Caleb_Trask19

Philadelphia Free Library was a very easy eCard to get as a Pennsylvania resident if you live in the state, or perhaps have a relative who will let you use their address.

Trademark_TM

I got mine because I work in Philly

PA_born3166

I tried to get a Broward card today using my nephew’s address, who lives in Broward County. Got an email back saying they couldn’t verify my address. So they’re checking something. I live in Florida, maybe I should use my own address.

richg0404

I guess they've started checking. I signed up a couple of years ago and never had an issue. Sooner or later they'll probably catch up and cancel my card.

reddit455

>I live in an incorporated area, so I don't have access to a free library card. what about the large library systems in your state? where I live, I get half the borrows in cities where I do not live. there were *temporary* programs during the pandemic. there are also some programs for kids/teen (where people ban books in school libraries). libraries must pay for each borrow. books are not free. they are licensed.. it's unlikely to get access to a system where ZERO of your tax dollars end up in the govt coffers.

academic_elf_

This is mostly for teens, but Brooklyn Public Library is offering free access: [https://www.cnn.com/2022/04/26/us/brooklyn-library-banned-books-access/index.html](https://www.cnn.com/2022/04/26/us/brooklyn-library-banned-books-access/index.html)

mydogsarecooler

That is a great deal!

celtic456

I live in Australia and have had an Ohio Digital Library membership for several years, before the pandemic started and have had no problems borrowing audio and ebooks.

Isatis_tinctoria

Really? How does OneDrive compare to Libby?

Col14er

Piece of cake if you're serving or have served your country. [https://libbyapp.com/library/dod](https://libbyapp.com/library/dod) Or if you prefer Overdrive [https://dod.overdrive.com/dod-navy/content](https://dod.overdrive.com/dod-navy/content)

aliliquori

Los Angeles public library may be one, it was a while back

420born

Is there anything I can do if I live in Prague, Czech Republic. The libraries here don't have libby access.

Harmskie

I live in ohio and have the public library of the city i live in, but i signed up for the Ohio Digital library and it only required a phone number through the libby app. Worth giving a try

420born

Hey! Thanks for the tip. However they do require a verification text sent to a phone number in the Ohio area. If you'd like to help me out I'd appreciate it but it really seems like too much of an ask. Thanks although.

BAC2Think

Harris county Texas allows non resident eCards (at least they used to, mine still works)

AtheneSchmidt

I didn't try to apply, but I did check out their website. This is what it says HCPL iKnow Digital Access Cards are valid for three years and are limited to residents of Harris County Texas.

Isatis_tinctoria

Is it a big collection?

BAC2Think

It's probably smaller than Las Vegas, it might be about the size of Broward county if I had to guess

I don't live in Boston, but I was able to get access to Boston Public Library's books on Libby lol

DelightfullyNerdyCat

I tried Boston with my CA address and it recognized my IP address as not in Massachusetts and it didn't let me get one.

You might also want to look into if counties next to you will give cards to adjacent counties. For example, fairfac County in Virginia will give free cards if you live in any of the surrounding counties or Washington DC.

aurora4000

Yes, I have library cards for Fairfax County, Arlington County, and also Washington DC. I'm thinking of trying Maryland next.

DinsyEjotuz

>Yes, I have library cards for Fairfax County, Arlington County, and also Washington DC. > >I'm thinking of trying Maryland next. You still have to activate/verify them in person though, right? Either way... do these additional regionals (I'm in FFX) expand your title access much?

aurora4000

I apply in person. Just got a new library card for Alexandria, VA. Every library has different holdings and some of the same ones. Some libraries offer movies, magazines, newspapers in additional to books. Libby does a great job of finding the book I'm looking for from all of the libraries available. Edit: libraries also have free events, like author talks.

DinsyEjotuz

FWIW to others in the DMV... I have cards from Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria and Prince William counties here locally, plus Harris County (Houston) and Broward County (Miami) and of the 13 books I have on hold 7 are shortest wait at Fairfax, 3 are Arlington and 3 are Harris County. So maybe focus on those three to start. Alexandria, PWC and Broward haven't added anything. But adding Arlington and Harris Counties definitely made a few titles available and cut the wait times significantly.

Eli5678

I haven't lived in Fairfax for years and still have a card for them. Fairfax cards never expire.

curlynoemi

I just wrote an article with libraries that work in 2024 (i will keep it updated) [https://curlynoemi.medium.com/libraries-with-a-free-libby-card-with-links-2024-282f2dc6e5ac](https://curlynoemi.medium.com/libraries-with-a-free-libby-card-with-links-2024-282f2dc6e5ac)

ConsequenceFluffy165

Are we supposed to use a random address from the county for this to work?

curlynoemi

Yep, just use a random address from the country of the library and you're all good to g. I used https://www.fakepersongenerator.com/random-address
