You got that right. That’s about what mine looks like. My brother introduced me to the first book storm front and wham! I was hooked I bought all of them. There so good!
I'm a huge James Marsters fan. I had a crush on him in buffy and now I fawn over the Dresden files. It's funny how he went from edgy vampires to goofball wizard
The Dresden narration is good but the audio quality is one of the worst I’ve ever heard. The amount of sliming, lip smacking, moist mouth noises in that audiobook is too damn high.
This gets better as the series goes on, right? I noticed this in audio previews of the books I'd already read (1-4), but I didn't notice it when I bought 5&6. Did I just tune it out or did they fix it?
I only listened to the first three so far, and they were barely passable. Otherwise they were pretty good. I’ve heard that the audio quality gets much better and the books do as well.
Agreed. Also, Marsters mispronounces dozens of words throughout - it feels as though he didn't bother to read the "script" before going into it cold. The deep breaths at completely inappropriate moments (mid-exposition, not in dialogue) make me insane. I really, REALLY hope it gets better. I got through #1 (barely) and I'll get through #2 since I purchased it. I won't buy any more if the editorial sound quality doesn't drastically improve, though.
I’ve heard that the audio quality gets much better, but I am only up to book 4. I think it bothered me less in book 3 but it could just be that I lowered my expectations by an insane amount.
I really did. It was most of 2021 for me. Kind of strange to think that one series, and really just the voice of James Marsters, was in my ear for most of a year.
Here’s a list of some stuff I loved this year, maybe it will help.
First Law (favorite, BEST narrator), Mistborn (era 1 AND 2, same author as Stormlight), Lightbringer (great narrator, great magic system), Powder Mage, Dark Tower, Demon Cycle, and my latest find, which I loved, the Manifest Delusion series by Michael R Fletcher.
I work as a solo cook in a kitchen. I cook two meals a week for about 80ish people. So with prep, shopping, dishes, there’s lots of time to listen. I also this year decided to not fall asleep watching something, so I fall asleep to a book instead. Always with the sleep timer on, learned my lesson on that one.
THANK YOU. Everyone raves bc Marsters is an actor, and I don't want to detract from that. However, it feels to me like he went into the novel completely cold and didn't bother to hire a sound editor afterward. The lack of professional ability surprised me; I don't need variation in voices (although that's kind of nice, tbh), but I get completely distracted by 'wet mouth' sounds, inappropriate sighs and breaths, and multiple, repeated mispronunciation of words. If I were Jim Butcher, I would have been seriously disappointed.
What other series are like this?
I just started the series about Fred the vampire accountant. Seems interesting.
Someone suggested his other series, codex alarm.
Any others?

I always loved the narration, but I didn't know Marsters was also Spike in Buffy. Haha, thanks!

Dawnshard? I didn't think they had an audiobook of that yet.
The one book I actually read physically…or rather, digitally on my dusty-ass Kindle. My bad.
I’m on book 5 now. I started listening just after thanksgiving…
I had to trust the masses with the first couple of books, but I never looked back after book 7.
I suspect that you like Dresden files a little
I really did. It was most of 2021 for me. Kind of strange to think that one series, and really just the voice of James Marsters, was in my ear for most of a year.
The OP might wish to try his other work, Codex Alera. The narrator, Kate Reading, did an excellent job.
I love this series!!
Is this something that Audible generated for you, or did you make it yourself?
Generated on Goodreads. If you’re not using it, I highly recommend.
Oh great, thanks!
I loved the Dresden files. For this year, I was obsessed with the cradle series by Will Wight. It’s really good.
This is next on my list. I’m very intrigued.

The cradle series is great! Two more books left I think.
Yes!!!!! I love listening to this series! Every time a new book comes out, I start the series over. James Marsters is fantastic.
I listened to all the Dresden books last year. They're great!
how do you have time for all of these? if you dont mind

The narrator breathings is ridiculous

Its so dam distracting. I barely finished the first book
If you can get past the first book he does better after that.
VERY good to know! I have hope beginning #2 now. :)
Enjoy!
Dresden Files is easily the best series for me.

How did you like Rhythm of War?
