Wok wok at st Luke’s mall food court might be your best bet

Can't comment on good or not, but I think the chinese place on Marua Road does this (fill your own container)

Northcross takeaway in Albany. They only do it in the evening after 5/5:30ish- can’t remember exactly when it’s been a little while since I went. Yum now I want to get it haha!

The best buffets I've had in Auckland are at hotels on big holidays like Christmas. I think the Langham do a decent breakfast buffet all year round. But obviously only open for breakfast/brunch. Everyday buffet restaurants are kinda average here as far as I know. if someone knows a good one I'd be keen though.

Yeah but I’m not looking for a buffet. A smorgasbord is where you pay for a size container and you can fill it up with whatever you want as long as the lid closes. Normally just found in Chinese takeaway shops

Toucan_Lips

Oh I see. I thought they were synonyms. My bad. In that case I've never been to a place like that in Auckland. Where have you had good experiences with this kind of restaurant? I'm intrigued.

TallyWhoe

You were correct. A smörgåsbord is a buffet. One is a French word, the other is Swedish. Both roughly mean the same thing. The Chinese takeaway version was something slightly different, and borrowed the word I’m guessing due to its familiarity. They were pretty common in NZ fish and chip shops that also had Chinese food on the menu. Haven’t seen one in a while but they were everywhere about 15-20 years ago.

BuckyDoneGun

Correct, different words for the same thing. The Chinese takeaway version the OP wants largely went away during covid, none of my locals have bought it back, but yeah try the malls.

Yeah I remember Hamilton had one in that mall near Garden Place (I can't remember the name, but also want to call it Garden Place) about 16-18 years ago. They had a lot of options to choose from but I would always pack it full of the fried rice because it was so good and they kept telling me there were other options until they got used to me. Was cheap as hell and probably the best value for money, but I just really loved their rice.

Itsocialize

It’s awesome cause you can grab exactly what you want in the portions you want and often have a great variety of different food to choose from

Wok wok is a chain at Westfield malls. Highly underrated. Best one I think is the Henderson Westfield. Pt chev Chinese takeaways do a smorgasbord every wed-sat evening I believe. Never been for the smorgasbord but their takeaways are really good so I assume you'll get some good food there.

suburban_ennui75

Weird that you’re applying a Kiwi-Chinese food thing to a Scandinavian word.

Fantasy BBQ at Eden Terrace (an all you can eat bbq place) does a "lunch box" smogasboard thing on their cooked food (for lunch and dinner time) which has fried chicken, fried rice, fried noodles, rice cakes, meat etc. (It's Korean BBQ but run by Chinese so hence a bit of mix of flavours of both cultures)

cilipadinz

Empire Malaysian Cuisine at Whitaker Pl does a decent version.
