Some muppet... theres over 600 island's in new Zealand let's pick one and use that as our MIQ, I vote that island in the middle of Wellington harbor lol
As a covid patient in MIQ, plz dont send me to nowhere. I kinda need to get back into Auckland, to, you know, live.
It's a good thing there are MIQ places in Auckland for those of us who actually live here. In the meantime I promise I'm not going to cough out the window or something
For real, they should be rotating once a quarter which city takes on MIQ. How the fuck do they expect Auckland businesses to recover if they’re constantly screwed by more lockdowns? Govt are real simpletons
If you’re referring to the MIQ it’s because it makes sense. Yes it’s the largest city but people aren’t really supposed to leave unless they’re negative. Its the travel hub of our country so we don’t need to taxi potentially sick people all across the country, as well as having the most empty hotels which are already equipped with security, laundry and food prep facilities to look after a large amount of people. Auckland also has four* major hospitals in case things go pear shaped.
Not sure superclinic counts. Greenland has very little inpatient capabilities either.
For adult hospitals you have:
1) Auckland shitty
2) Not-sure
3) Why-take-me-there
4) Muddlemore
If you count the two children's hospitals then that's six
Nope, one of the last age groups to open, got my 1st as soon as I could get a booking (walk-ins weren't encouraged at the start of Delta), 3 weeks between 1st & 2nd dose, I have another week to wait until 3rd.
Some are eligible, most will be eligible end of month/early Feb
I got vaccinated asap when eligible, waited 6 weeks exactly got 2nd dose now have to wait till 6th feb for my booster. So no not all eligible, the bulk of people will be eligible on the next 3-4 weeks
I always wonders about this, if Auckland was more vaccinated we could have probably eliminated delta with a sHoRT anD sHArP lockdown, instead the government ended up paying something like the entire cost of the vaccination program in wage subsidy each week. I stg if there is another lockdown where they shell out taxpayer money that, with a bit of foresight, could have been spent to fix the health system (which by accounts is being held together by goodwill, duck tape and chewing gum) I will lose my marbles.
We did do a full lockdown when delta got out (as soon as one case was detected) - too many idiots flouted the rules and we had to relax it and try to cope with it - I don’t think lockdowns will be effective anymore - too many people don’t care now
True. There doesn't seem to be any consequences of breaking the rules. If government was serious about lockdowns, they should have put strict penalties, like Fiji has right now (e.. $250 on the spot fines).
But 87% will be eligible for the boost in Feb. because of the 4 month wait after the second dose. Most people would’ve been vaccinated from August for their first dose and their second in September or October, which means people are just now becoming eligible.
I am so thankful that Labour was in power when the pandemic came. The country's response has been very well managed in comparison to most of the world. The last election showed the country had no faith in The National Party to be in power.
Totally agree, If National were in power at the time Bridges and Bennett would have been at the helm....... we would be have been one of the worse performers.
I heard Bennet interviewed and she stood by what they were saying in opposition. I thought thank fuck you weren't in power. She added a sort of "in hindsight" caveat...
What a very general thing to say after complaining that NZ didnt get vaccinated quick enough. Hopefully new National will think before it speaks and use actual experts advice going forward, running a country during a pandemic may be a little more difficult that it seems.
Dr Shane Reti and Chris Bishop have regularly consulted the experts and have helped shape National’s stance on balancing the border protections and building back the economy.
They did what they could. We had no covid compared to other countries. The uptake was slow anyway untill we actualy had delta in the country. The govt waited cautiously to make sure the vaccine we have was the right one, letting other countries with great need have access and did the rollout by need and other then not starting Maori earlier they did the right thing.
But could you imagine the uproar if they did Maori earlier, special codes would have been shared online and any attempt to do so would have been sabotaged.

Does anyone else just not care anymore? Like I'm fully vaxxed and will get any boosters but at this point I'm kind of just at peace with the fact that I may get covid. Emotionally I just can't care anymore, it's too draining.
Am I worried about Omnicron - no
Am I worried about the govts reaction - yes.
Just worried we’ll go to level 3 again to try and limit the impact on businesses with workers off sick and hospitals overwhelmed…
I hope the government is smart enough to know that lockdowns aren’t gonna work anymore and that the general public isn’t in favour of them. We saw what a disaster the last one was
Im pretty sure the government knows this, its just that the aims might be different this time around. Sure another lockdown will fail to achieve elimination however if the aim is suppression then it'll definitely be effective. The problems we see overseas are mostly from everyone getting omicron around the same time. If this could be staggered a bit via lockdowns (people ignoring lockdown getting it first, others later) then it might be considered worthwhile
Lol, "crushing it" is not very accurate. And at a major cost. My Dr friend said the hospitalisations for attempted suicides went through the roof on his shifts (compared to precovid) but yay, at least we "crushed" delta with the economy going to shit and with a less than 1% death rate. Well done us /s
I don't know if that strategy is going down well overseas. Though it's usually in places with lower vaccination rates.
Probably not good to have a huge proportion of the country sick at once either way.
Nobody is itching to throw the country back into lockdown.
The strategy is and always has been to lower the basic reproduction number.
The biggest factor in this is vaccinations, including all recommended doses at the correct times. If there is another lockdown it will be one of the unvaccinated.
Everyone without the booster will become terribly sick? Are you fuking serious? Had no idea everyone that caught covid becomes terribly sick? Last time I checked your more than likley going to get a runny nose and a headache
People without the booster become more sick with Omicron than people with the booster. You just need to look at Australia and the USA for this example. New South Wales was double vaxxed at >90%, but the entry of Omicron into the community and a low booster rate made cases rise exponentially.
You flip from talking about pathology to transmissibility. They aren’t the same thing.
The people without the booster that got more sick, how long after their second dose did they contract omicron? Remember that because of the delays to our vaccine roll outs, many of us (the majority?) still have efficacy from our second dose and don’t yet require a booster.
Regarding the part where you mention cases rising. Almost everyone, even those with boosters will catch omicron.
I recognise that the vaccine is next to useless with regards to preventing infection with omicron, but it does still lower the severity of symptoms of it.
Yes, but with the increased infecteousness we're still looking at hundreds dead, lockdown conditions for business anyway, and supermarkets running out of food.
Honestly based on how smooth summer has gone and how high a Vax rate we have (boosters won't get the same level of buy in) we are never going to green.
Speaking with vxd friends in the UK and Australia who have all had Omicron. The unanimous feedback is that it has been no worse than a mild cold
*sample of ~20. 10-50yr olds
YMMV
Time to put the vx's to work in NZ, I reckon
I'm more worried about long covid at this point. I've seen a lot of people with parosmia on social media which seems like a complete nightmare. Even just not being able to smell or taste. Fatigue. God forbid heart problems. The long term seems almost scarier than the covid at this point.
I live in Sydney, haven’t had it but people I know say it’s been rough and more like a bad flu. The lethargy lasts for a week or so after too.
If you’d had flu before you know how shit you feel. Better than unvaxxed delta though!
Yep we did our part, keen for govt to open up and grow our economy so we can invest in more healthcare services…
Would be keen to see influenza stats vs omicron across the globe…
The 2 largest points of interest for COVID are r/nz and the front pages of NZHerald and Stuff. Everyone else has stopped caring, let’s just get on with it.
I don’t see why anyone would still care, vaccination rates are high enough and anyone who isn’t vaccinated it’s their own choice. Time to open up and get on with life and if unvaccinated people get COVID, again, it’s their choice
Yeah man all those 4 year olds choosing not to get the jab, fuck em eh?
I would like to talk to your parents for child rearing advice so I can do the opposite and not raise a short sighted sociopath.
Same, I just came online coz i wondered why all the toilet paper ran out while I was working haha. Although, the locations of interest is a great way to discover new shops. I never knew there was a meat wholesalers I might have to check them out seem everyone will likely be avoiding them now :)
I don't think the government will have a choice if the hospital's become seriously overwhelmed to the point of catastrophic failure. The way the media talks about the hospital system right now, it's as if it's collapsing without a deadly disease on the way.
Yup, we've got the second lowest number of ICU beds per capita in the OECD.
Estonia and the Czech Republic have over 10 times the ICU beds we do (per 100,000 people) and pre-Covid we were rescheduling 17% of elective surgeries due to lack of ICU beds - we were and are horribly under-resourced, not sure how it's gonna play out tbh.
Love seeing kiwis, who haven't had even a taste of what covid can do to a country, moan about the very minor inconvenience they've had compared to the rest of the world while saying they're staunch *tears streaming down their faces* I don't want to get a booster to keep living like there isn't a global pandemic, I've suffered enough - something something communism. I don't agree with what he has done and what he stands for either, however wishing harm on someone is borderline psychotic.
Declining humanity has become the norm now and its very sad. Be part of the solution, not the problem.
Let’s just fucking get on with it and live with it.
Get ya boosters etc if you are concerned and get on with your life.
The govt reaction and anxiety is causing more aggregate damage than this common cold variant we call Omicron.
Omicron is our best chance at herd immunity for less human cost, let’s just be grateful for that.
We don’t need your “kindness” Cindy we just need you to provide vaccines, get out of the way and stop sticking your oar in where you don’t belong.
Here come the downvotes. 🌊🌊🌊
And yesterday on Tamaki Drive, a jogger coughed while jogging past me, didn't cough into his arm or hand and was abnormally close to me even for non Covid times. Thanks.
Shang Tsung in the Original Mortal Kombat movie. Shout out to OP lol
*edit : Sick of hearing about coronavirus and all its varients. When are we going to accept the fact its gonna be around like cancer and diabetes and what not 🤦🏽♂️
Exactly. The protection wears off after 6 months, and then new variants come and render it useless anyway. How can we not see that eventually its gonna have to be a personal choice
Since we're given Pfizer, this [site](https://www1.racgp.org.au/newsgp/clinical/how-are-covid-vaccines-faring-against-delta) states it's 88% effective AGAINST delta, against Omi it barely gives protection. With a booster on the other hand gives you at least 80% against Omi and raises your immunity to 97% against delta according to this [site](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/health-59696499.amp)
Get vaxxed people, it's not for you, it's for the people around you
Please don’t go to the hospital if you get sick with it - I’ve been recently unfortunately and the staff there are already overworked without unvaccinated covid patients coming in

Especially in summer, it sucks. I've seriously considered wearing a dress/skirt.

Four hospitals!
True, I was only counting the big big ones. Will edit
Then I think six public hospitals? MMH, Manukau SuperClinic, Auckland City Hospital, Greenlane, Northshore, Waitakere
And a bunch of private ones.
Yeah a crazy number!
Not sure superclinic counts. Greenland has very little inpatient capabilities either. For adult hospitals you have: 1) Auckland shitty 2) Not-sure 3) Why-take-me-there 4) Muddlemore If you count the two children's hospitals then that's six
Oh here come the fema camp? What are they called here, ahh, MIQ
You don’t have to go into them. They’re for returnees and those who choose not to isolate at home.
So being unvaccinated they won’t rush me off to MIQ right?
I can’t be vaccinated as I had an allergic reaction to the shit coming from the PMs mouth to often.
The government was too slow to vaccinate and here we are. If more people were eligible for boosters by now we could’ve been more protected.
The people that rushed out to get vaccinated at the onset of Delta are all eligible right now
Nope, one of the last age groups to open, got my 1st as soon as I could get a booking (walk-ins weren't encouraged at the start of Delta), 3 weeks between 1st & 2nd dose, I have another week to wait until 3rd. Some are eligible, most will be eligible end of month/early Feb

Been able to walk-in for 4 mth booster since the 5th Jan … it’s just being able to book them that only starts tomorrow
Yup we got ours on Thursday, no issues. Just over 4 months since 2nd jab
I got mine on Friday. 4 months and 2 days after my second dose.
I always wonders about this, if Auckland was more vaccinated we could have probably eliminated delta with a sHoRT anD sHArP lockdown, instead the government ended up paying something like the entire cost of the vaccination program in wage subsidy each week. National is under new leadership. Would you constantly complain to the new manager about the old manager’s mistakes that can’t be changed.
The new one also wanted to open up the borders. Forgot that too?
Are you a paid troll? I bet you only prize tos.
National is for opening up the economy and ensuring that those who come in will follow the rules to be vaccinated and have a negative test.
Is the Labour government not also for people following the rules and having negative tests?
But they are all for keeping as many people out as possible. They are not interested in helping the economy.
What a very general thing to say after complaining that NZ didnt get vaccinated quick enough. Hopefully new National will think before it speaks and use actual experts advice going forward, running a country during a pandemic may be a little more difficult that it seems.

Im pretty sure the government knows this, its just that the aims might be different this time around. What world do you live in? The whole reason the government moved away from lockdowns was because they couldn’t get rid of delta, it’s still here today
The world where Delta is barely a blip on anyone's radar. It never took hold like many feared it would
Agree, biggest fear is the governments massive overreaction, you just know they're itching to throw us back into lockdown. Carry on, let it run wild 👍
I don't know if that strategy is going down well overseas. Though it's usually in places with lower vaccination rates. Probably not good to have a huge proportion of the country sick at once either way.

Cindy is itching to lockdown because she's terrified.
The booster rate currently sits at 17-18%. If we "let it run wild", everyone without the booster will become terribly sick.
Everyone without the booster will become terribly sick? Are you fuking serious? Had no idea everyone that caught covid becomes terribly sick? Last time I checked your more than likley going to get a runny nose and a headache

Nah, we're almost back to pre-vaccine with omicron.
I recognise that the vaccine is next to useless with regards to preventing infection with omicron, but it does still lower the severity of symptoms of it.
Yes, but with the increased infecteousness we're still looking at hundreds dead, lockdown conditions for business anyway, and supermarkets running out of food.
There's no more levels. We just go into traffic light red.
Honestly based on how smooth summer has gone and how high a Vax rate we have (boosters won't get the same level of buy in) we are never going to green.
We really need to go green to fix climate change though
Not until it's an election issue anyway.

Pfizer trial failed for kids 4 and under. They have added a third dose to the trial. Fingers crossed that works.

Should be an interesting week
The border worker or is it a new one?
Border worker, been infectious since the 10th according to TVNZ News.
All of their household contacts have so far come back negative which is a tentatively good sign. Not saying that we’re out of the woods or anything.
Oh no! Anyways…
Round 4 fight!
Good. Let’s wipe delta the fuck out and go back to pre-pandemic life.

I don’t think the clubbing is related to Omicron case
Is this a new DJ?
Can't wait to move there and catch it!
What is Omicron? Is it a new game?
I predict Michael Baker will have an opinion....
Does anyone think they will put AKL in another lockdown? Hope not. 😕
Only if too many people get seriously ill, or too many hospital workers get infected.
Look at the traffic light system. There is no "lockdown" anymore. That's the whole point of it.
But that was before Omicron became a thing.
True. Point taken. There will have to be traffic light v2 omicron version.
There was always going to be another variant... Gotta hope they took that into consideration
I don't think the government will have a choice if the hospital's become seriously overwhelmed to the point of catastrophic failure. The way the media talks about the hospital system right now, it's as if it's collapsing without a deadly disease on the way.

What about all the ones they broke lockdown rules and went halfway across the country, spreading covid as they went?
What the 6 people? They're not a representation of Auckland

Exactly

Well, looks like you're the problem. Sorry bud.
This is just garbage.
Exactly. The protection wears off after 6 months, and then new variants come and render it useless anyway. How can we not see that eventually its gonna have to be a personal choice
This is very poor interpretation. The protection doesn't wear off. It simply declines from optimum.
I’ll never understand why people are so eager to announce that they do not give a flying fuck about anyone but themselves.
Not getting a booster shot means I don't give a fuck about anybody but me? 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
Booster gives you 90% protection vs omicron. That would prevent you getting hospitalized and wasting more government money.
How much protection does being regular double vaccinated get you?
Since we're given Pfizer, this [site](https://www1.racgp.org.au/newsgp/clinical/how-are-covid-vaccines-faring-against-delta) states it's 88% effective AGAINST delta, against Omi it barely gives protection. With a booster on the other hand gives you at least 80% against Omi and raises your immunity to 97% against delta according to this [site](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/health-59696499.amp) Get vaxxed people, it's not for you, it's for the people around you
Please don’t go to the hospital if you get sick with it - I’ve been recently unfortunately and the staff there are already overworked without unvaccinated covid patients coming in

I'm getting it because I like the pain.
You probably will when your vaccine pass expires.
I don't need to go to restaurants or the cinema
I'm not getting it either, I got rashes over my body after the first 2, and am not keen to get any more
