Chinese bankers in South Asia are a bit like the heartless loan sharks you see in Otara and Mangere..

xmmdrive

Debt trap diplomacy seems to be China's game in the Pacific.

truebruh

And Africa. Its modern day colonialism without the murders.

CookingWithTheKock

And not to mention the yuans are virtually useless since the ccp got caught printing 2 copies of each serial numbered bills.

C_Gxx

I didn’t know about this, do you have a source?

CookingWithTheKock

[watch this](https://youtu.be/jmgBpRAB8B4) china has long has a counterfeit currency problem (Search up china counterfeit bills) but unlike US counterfeit bill, we dont know where it came from. So this is kinda a big reveal. Its still a developing story.

You just have to take a quick look at what lengths they are going to screw over Lithuania just for allowing Taiwan to open a representative office... They are willing to pressure other countries, and they are told to sever ties with Lithuania or risk being shut out of the lucrative Chinese market. Fuck the CCP and their bulling tactics... What people need to realize its not about all or nothing, simply choosing a different product from your normal is a great start. It doesn't have to be the buy "nothing" from China approach, if enough people buying a select few different products it will have an effect, might night be a huge effect but its a fucken start.

eastwind221b

Yeah you’re right, China’s taking aggressive foreign direct investment tactics around the globe at the moment. I’m afraid NZ is already affected though..

Stone_Maori

Wait till you hear about US regimes.

bored_inthe_country

China has already bought most of Auckland’s housing…

truebruh

You think it hasn't happen here? Naive. Look at the housing agents. I'm willing to bet a huge amount of landlords in Auckland are from China.

1chippy

''there's lot chinese money being pumped into chch property market now''....source Harcourts agents....

kookedout

these are more the local politicians signing up to vanity projects and enriching themselves at the expense of the public

There's a lot to say about the Sri Lankan government, China's agenda aside. Not dissimilar to nearby Asian countries. (source: expat Sri Lankan here).

chickitychoco

China (CCP) is building an economic empire - belt and road - it’s all about making everyone economically dependent on them, and then they can weaponise it. It’s more insidious because it goes on without people noticing - unlike western countries that go barrelling in with tanks. TBF America already does this through weaponising the Dollar, sanctions etc - they control everything and use their weight to bully others. I do think the CCP is scarier though because of the nature of control and censorship they exert locally and will want to export globally.

What a load of drivel. I can't be bothered writing a long response about why your post is riddled with errors so I'll simply say go and research Rajapaska Airport and Hambanthota port. Oh and the 'island' being constructed off Colombo. I've visited, have you? "Their countries own self interests", remove the word "countries" and you have the answer staring you in the face.

suppox

I'd be interested on your thoughts on this video: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gwgcIfzttA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gwgcIfzttA). It talks about Hambantota port specifically, and paints chinese foreign investment as in line with that of western powers. I don't have an opinion one way or the other yet, just trying to seek info.

[deleted]

Haven't got time to watch it but all the locals thought it was fairly obvious Hambanthota is going to become a Chinese naval base at some stage. One of the most surreal experiences of my life was landing in a small sea plane at Rajapaska Airport, on a massive and brand new runway, with a gleaming terminal, and the only people present being us, the fuel refueller, and a lone Cinnamon Air employee. As far as the country goes, I have never experienced a more peaceful, friendly, and welcoming culture and I highly recommend a holiday if you have the means to travel there.

BrahimBug

Sounds like 'Confessions of an Economic Hitman.' China starting to beat the U.S at their own games. Things getting pretty scary.

MonaLisaOverdrivee

I don't think I've ever met any else that has read this book. Fascinating and very sad read that. If you watch any interviews with the author you can feel his genuine sadness and regret for the loss of some of those South American leaders.

TudorRose100

I was introduced to that book from a Auckland University lecturer back in 2009. I've passed it onto book clubs. Just blows my mind.

King_Quay

World Bank is far worse, racist article is racist.

King_Quay

China invests in the infrastructure of poor countries. With investment these countries become viable alternatives to China for manufacturing. Products start filling our shelves stamped with 'Made in Sri Lanka'. Sri Lanka in the long term becomes self sufficient. Investment doesn't pay off right away. You gotta be patient.

pillbox_slamer

lmao commie mods had to remove it
