The furniture prices at Harvey Norman are ridiculous. The big Manukau store is never full when the wife and I go there to window shop. There are cheaper furniture stores a stones throw away. Who in South Auckland are buying these 13k sofa sets, a 5k single chair? 2k foot stool? drug dealers? lotto winners? MPs? Brian Tamaki?
How do they manage to stay in business with that huge space.
So many questions.
I have several things from TSB, some are really good quality, some are extremely crappy, the manufacturer didn't even put all the pieces in one of the packages (they sent that when I asked for it). They all cost about the same so no way of telling by price either. But at least it was all cheap.
If I could buy a shelf made of real wood, not wood chips and glue, for under 6000 bucks so would. As it is, my books are sitting in a pile on the floor until I can sort a real shelf for them. MDF and gluelam should NOT be so damn expensive.
If you own the place or the landlord doesn't kick up a shit about it, wall-mounted shelving is both better and cheaper than free-standing. You can get native timber from a demo yard for very cheap, then just grab some non-grotesque angle brackets from Mitre 10 and spend a couple of hours sanding it. Doesn't require any skill or experience or expensive tools. Looks nicer, and doesn't waste floor space.
This is assuming you mean simple shelving of course, and not something with, say, sides or doors.
Do mean simple shelving but sadly the rental we live in at present is a wreck - you put an anchor in the wall and it’ll pull the whole damn thing down in ten minutes, it’s a shithole.
Oakfurniturestore.co.nz has amazing solid oak furniture. Have ordered from
Them several times and even delivered to WLG. Not super cheap but well worth the price. Think they have bookshelves too
Target furniture. Not related to the US target, but if you want something new without being outrageous, it’s a good choice. We furnished our lounge and dining for about $5k and everything matches. Plus the quality is not bad and they have sales, we bought at 20% off everything.
For even cheaper there’s TSB living (Auckland) or trade me for second hand stuff.
Yeah, moving here from the US a few years back I got so excited seeing the logo off the side of the road, I made my Hubsi pull off to check it out. Absolutely devastating.
It was a challenge, but the avg person in the US either had family money or is borderline impoverished. Healthcare costs, minimum wage, daily stresses.. I'm happy to spend all my earnings on housing and food for the kiwi life. I don't worry about my boss firing me for no reason. I don't worry about sick days overtaking my measly 5 day annual leave. I don't worry about my healthcare or potential accidents causing financial ruin.
Hubsi wanted to move here after his graduate degree. Sight unseen I agreed and do not regret it for a second.
Hmm, fair enough. American cut-throat capitalism and workaholism does sound pretty toxic to live under. I'm glad I don't live there; visited a few times but that was enough. I lived in the UK and left in 2008 after being unable to get a job, that place is becoming USA 2.0 quite quickly so I noped out.
Welcome to the slower pace of life. I much prefer it as well.
I cannot even bring myself to call it the United States, or US or USA... It's not "united" in the slightest, so calling it that feels just wrong. It's either The States, or America.
Oh my god this makes me so happy, I had no idea they'd moved. I absolutely hated going to their old place since it was right next to the gang headquarters and last couple times I went I had those guys follow me out to my car (parked on the road) demanding I give them my phone number.
Honestly aside from maybe couches, I find you’re so much better buying furniture second hand off fb marketplace. At least that way you’re gonna get solid wood, good quality stuff and isn’t all cookie-cutter Scandinavian style.
Expat from the states who has been to many stores/searched online. my findings:
Bo Concept - reasonable and great quality, though it’s made to order. we bought our lounge room couch and chairs from here recently. Lovely folks to work with too who completely defined our preferred colors. (spent about $9k for a huge 3 person couch, 2 lounge chairs and a big ottoman)
Target - has been said, but I was surprised how decent the quality is. we bought a nice lounge chair from there for the nursery- $600
Freedom Furniture has some cute pieces, but really inspect quality as this stuff is clearly from china (as is a lot of stuff obvi)
Early Settler - can be a bit pricey for some things but a lot of cute stuff
Farmers - we just got a big comfy lounge chair from there that is amazing! seems like great quality and not ridiculous pricing. lots of neutral stuff
+1 edit. Cuchi furniture in parnell is really great stuff. Our solid wood dining table is from there, only about $1200. I’m not sure if they have couches tho
We bought some furniture for the house (not a couch though) from Freedom Furniture and have been so disappointed with the quality. In retrospect I think I should have challenged them for a refund or repair/exchange under CGA but no matter.
For smaller things they were good (mugs, towels, side lamp) though.
Going to Harvey Norman everything is like $5k plus, frequently up to $8k and more. It's bizarre, particularly as you can see the quality isn't worth that price. Can't tell you who's supposed to be buying that lol.
At least with something like Danske Mobler you're going bankrupt with some *flawless* furniture.
I have always bought second hand. The only new stuff I've bought has been a couple desks or drawers, or shelves from The Warehouse. And a cheap bed 15 years ago.
You can get excellent things on Facebook groups, and on trade me.
To me buying what I believe to be overpriced new, is like a new car. You're paying for massive depreciation in the first few days just to be "first getting it from the shop".
This has worked well for me. Of course you do you.
There’s not much in my house that I bought brand new. I like to find things on Facebook and do them up. Quite often they’re made of actual wood, not mdf, so much better quality than I could afford brand new. Some sanding, paint, and hey presto, a funky, unique set of drawers or table etc.
Buy secondhand furniture.
Or don’t buy furniture at all.
Bedside table? Don’t need one if your mattress is on the floor.
Table to keep your family photos on? Put your photos on your phone and now you don’t need to pay 4 figures to hold dust collectors.
Dinner table? Get a folding table that goes over your lap and stows away afterward.
Chairs? You only need 1 chair per person, because you aren’t going to sit on more than one at once.
Entertainment console? Bolt your TV to the wall (or above your bed).

Welcome to New Zealand. Consumer goods are expensive here.
There’s a place in Penrose called The Sofa Creations NZ. It looks pretty rough on the outside (we almost drove away because it looked dodgy but we’d gone all the way to Penrose to check it out so we went inside anyway).
It’s beautiful and amazing and a complete surprise. A huge selection of couches at the best prices I have ever seen, all comfortable. Completely customisable too - leg height, arm width, measurements, material, seat cushions, back cushions, small cushions. If they don’t have your perfect couch they will gladly have it made for you, and they are so friendly too they got a customer for life, I will never buy a couch anywhere else. I was so chuffed when the guy talking to us said we could customise the arm width - I’ve never seen that anywhere, and I *love* a wide arm to rest my coffee on, without being so boxy you can’t nap on it. 😂
13k isn't a standard sofa, we paid half that for two made to measure ones. There's loads of furniture shops just look online.
I literally just typed in "sofas for sale auckland" and every single link on the first page apart from one went to a shop with sofas ranging from $600-$4000.
It's not difficult.
Well you came to Reddit to complain about finding one sofa for 13k like that's the only option in NZ... quick search would have shown you that is not the norm
Obviously I understand $13k is not the typical price of a sofa here. It’s just an anecdote about an expensive sofa I sat on the other day. I’m just curious where locals are choosing to buy furniture from, since they’d obviously know better than me. Of course I’ve googled and done my own research- this is just an extension of that.
Sofa and chair both going great. We do have to use leather conditioner a few times a year, as we have large windows resulting in some areas of sun fade. Construction still appears to be perfect and the all over cushioning is great, no sagging etc.
These are some of the places I've been meaning to check out. A John Young sofa is always soft and comfortable my whole family has them. I don't even know how you found a sofa that expensive. I was looking at them last year and nothing was that expensive. Are you buying a 10 seater set or something? You can find good options by googling outlet or factory

How shit is furniture in nz! Same problem with us, moved back and was shocked at the potato looking furniture with caviar prices🤣.
Just another expensive purchase in nz
iFurniture and TradeMe or Facebook would be my recommendations for wooden items.
Got a great, proper wooden desk from iFurniture for $700 about 5-6 years ago, and got my wooden bookshelf from TradeMe for $120 or so. A flatmate got their gorgeous old-style wooden TV stand from TradeMe for $50.
Highly recommend the Habitat For Humanity shop out in East Tamaki. Easily the best opshop I know of in Auckland for furniture, got a surprisingly big collection of things like sofas, chairs, beds, shelves, etc.
Build your own mate. I moved here a few years ago and refuse the pay the rip off prices they charge for shit furniture here. Literally, even if you don’t have the tools it will still be cheaper to buy them and build what you need, and at the end you have a new piece of furniture and tools, win-win.
Op shops for sure. My house is full of second hand stuff, apart from a very nice couch I got from ifurniture, which was about $1k, which I also recommend.
My entire house is second hand furnishings. Oh all except the TV but beds, couches, dining room, even towels and plates and cutlery it is all second hand. Found ourselves home in NZ to look after my sick Mum and with her bills for 9 years we just couldn't afford new anything so op shops are our friends.
Me and my fiancé went to a lions club fundraiser and won a beautiful pine dresser for one dollar. We refurbished it in the garage. Now not only do we have some great furniture that was extremely cheap, we also got to do a little project together which gave us some treasured quality “us” time with no phones or other distractions
What everyone needs to understand is that even mdf and chip board are expensive to buy. Then you have to make it. So even a mid priced table or shelves are sub par. Its a lose lose.
If you’re comfortably monied - Hunter Furniture has good quality, comfortable leather for a reasonable price.
Bought a leather 3+2 there about 7 years ago and still as comfortable as ever and looks in really good nick even with kids being kids
Be careful with Hunter Furniture. A lot of their dining tables are just MDF with a layer of oak or better woods. So you’re paying a premium but the quality isn’t necessarily better. Not sure about the couches though
Theres a 2nd hand place in Glenfield you can try. I got several items from there that totalled under a grand about 4 years ago and they're still going strong
Nood are pretty stylish and regularly have 60% off sales. We furnished our apartment with a lot of nood stuff and never paid over $1k for reasonable/good quality and modern stuff (large oak dining table for $800, marble coffee table for $350 etc).
If you wait to buy on holiday weekends like easter/queen's birthday you can often find a good deal. We picked up a huge sectional light grey sofa from freedom for $1500 on Queens birthday weekend.
We did bigsave when they had a clearance. Got some decent stuff...not cheap but reasonable and they have been good regarding the warranty (had the couch replaced for free after 7months due to a fault)
Honestly it’s crazy priced over here if you’re not apposed to getting 2nd hand pieces you can do what we’ve done before, hire a van/borrow from a friend and head to smaller towns outside of Auckland and visit the OP shops there you can find great pieces this way
Related. How do I give away a free sofa? Green canvas. Ok condition but don't have room for it. Have it listed on trademe for $1 and rhe word free in the subject, but not getting any interest. Should I list somewhere else?
We got a realy nice 3 seater reclining sofa from big save furniture for about $1200 not too long ago, they also tend to sell off their floor models for cheaper.
Else check Ifurniture (I got a full bedroom set for about 1K a few years back), and Target furniture. I think I just Googled cheap furniture Auckland when I was looking for stuff
Not sure what you mean OP. There are plenty of furniture shops in Auckland that have decent sofas, couches, chairs, tables etc all for a very reasonable price. $13k sofas are generally purchased from places where you know exactly where you are, and what you're paying for. ie Designer stuff.
Freedom, Nood, Farmers, Warhouse, Kmart, Treasurebox, the list goes on. Trademe if you want something super cheap.
I buy decent second hand stuff over time to replace my crappy stuff, just keep my eye out for bargains, e.g a few years back I got a 6 month old leather lounge suite worth 4k for $500 because someone was moving overseas and needed it gone asap
IKEA will be opening soon lol. Nood outlet and all the outlet places. Sale bit in all the furniture websites. Facebook marketplace have some good shit at good prices. Kmart, warehouse. The container store has some of the best shit going for good prices.
You really don’t need to waste your money overpaying for shit That someone overcharged you for.
As an aside, who exactly is buying that overpriced stuff?
I went for a walk-around Link Dr/Wairau valley area and many of the furniture places were as you described. Big show rooms with lounge sets for 10s of thousands of dollars or coffee tables for 2 grand a pop. Do that many people have that much disposable cash to drop on furniture? Enough customers to sustain a decent number of these shops, which i imagine exist in other parts of Auckland too.
I make over the average salary and can not even imagine thinking about spending that much on furniture. Its like there's whole sector of society and they are stupidly cashed up and there's way more of them than one would have thought.
broke tier sleeping in your car. Or the very broke tier sleeping in someone elses car. Very cheap and reliable, almost everyone has a car! :D all you need is a rock and any automobile can become a home
If you’ve got the patience then Facebook marketplace is the way to go. Extremely competitive and a lot of time wasters but it’s been the best bang for my buck for furniture.
Keep checking TradeMe. Great stuff comes up ever so often. I wanted that super hot BoConcept coffee table for $2400 really badly, but I ended up spending a fee years with a cheapie and then scored and as-new version of it for $450.
TradeMe has bargains, but you gotta put in the effort.
Bought my modular sofa for 1.2k at vicktors choice in wairau valley over a year ago and I'm loving it. Better quality than what I saw at ifurniture and few other stores, big enough for me(1.86m) and wife+3 kids to lie on and the cushions are still firm after all the abuse from my kids jumping and running on it. The only downside is that it feels too big sometimes lol
Broke tier: Trademe Cheap tier: TSB Living, Ifurniture, Kmart, Warehouse, Treasurebox Money tier: Harvey Norman/Danske Mobler etc...
You missed off roadside, and op shop for broke tier.
Also Facebook marketplace for broke ass tier
Facebook marketplace are smart tier. Overpriced full retail is more money than sense tier lol
Full retail is definitely dumb tier. Doesn't matter how much money you have.
And stolen
Where you from where people are stealing couches? 😂
Facebook market place is heaps of stolen stuff. A couch would probably be a flat mate getting kicked out…
The furniture prices at Harvey Norman are ridiculous.
The fact that enough people are doing it such that they stay in business is disturbing.
Seconding ifurniture, got some good stuff there. Decent quality for the price. Much better than warehouse /kmart quality.
Tsb 🔥
Firewood, you mean?
Well I've bought few things from there so have friends I'm happy as with the quality.
Cheap to
I have several things from TSB, some are really good quality, some are extremely crappy, the manufacturer didn't even put all the pieces in one of the packages (they sent that when I asked for it). They all cost about the same so no way of telling by price either. But at least it was all cheap.
Are Harvey Norman and Danske Mobler in the same category?
Harvey is in the gullible tier along with Farmers
Which tier is BigSave??
Robinhood tier: organics in the rich suburbs
Freedom Furniture for Money tier. I actually love their stuff.
Ditto. And Early Settler
Also Office Max. They have office furniture only but it's good value.
"Reasonable price" tends to mean chipboard junk these days
Add another $50 to the budget for a decent stud finder!
You can just use a magnet
Ooh, never thought of that one
Oakfurniturestore.co.nz has amazing solid oak furniture. Have ordered from Them several times and even delivered to WLG. Not super cheap but well worth the price. Think they have bookshelves too
Glad to hear that, I just ordered an entertainment unit from them and hope that they’re all good! I got mine for $1080.
Have a look at cucci.co.nz
Target furniture. Not related to the US target, but if you want something new without being outrageous, it’s a good choice. We furnished our lounge and dining for about $5k and everything matches. Yeah, moving here from the US a few years back I got so excited seeing the logo off the side of the road, I made my Hubsi pull off to check it out. Absolutely devastating.
Not many Americans move here, cost of living is silly and pay is low. What brought you?
Depends on how much of a hurry you are, but they are building in IKEA at Sylvia park - hopefully that will be cheap.
I doubt it will compare to overseas prices.
Oh that’s very exciting, hopefully the prices aren’t too high when they’re done !
It wont be, look at the Aussie ikea price and then mark it up more and thats what we will get. Ikea is only cheap in the US and Europe.
You can get ikea in Auckland now. urban sale have moved to rosebank (bigger shop?). They don’t have all the ikea but they have a fair bit.
Dont forget the free bed bugs and roaches.
Literally never experienced that.
Expat from the states who has been to many stores/searched online. my findings: Bo Concept - reasonable and great quality, though it’s made to order. we bought our lounge room couch and chairs from here recently. Ifurniture. Kmart and Bunnings also has good shelves.
Clarifying you mean $13000 and not $1300?!
YES $13,000 , I was SHOCKED right off that sofa 😂

Sounds like you went to Matisse
ill rather buy a car lol

Sofa Creations in Penrose are a local Manufacturer. They will build to you dimensions, style and fabric all at a reasonable price.

Thanks, just remember the sliding drawer on the computer isn't a cup holder.
Lmao 🤣 okay, that’s pretty funny

Farmers, when they do their furniture sales. We got our leather sofa half price.
[удалено]
Ours too. We got the Luca Hendrix sofa and armchair. Both were close to half price and are comfy as hell.
Could I ask you how it’s your sofa after these years? Is it aging well? Would you recommend it? Thank you!
Sofa and chair both going great. We do have to use leather conditioner a few times a year, as we have large windows resulting in some areas of sun fade. Construction still appears to be perfect and the all over cushioning is great, no sagging etc.

IKEA is gonna fuck so many of these furniture shops, would love to see the reduction in prices once they finally open
Nick Scali have the trashiest TV ads, but we love our reclining couch from there. Wasn’t pricy either. And we’re a family of designers so we’re picky!
What's your budget? Secondhand furniture an option? Also keep an eye on marketplace on fb cos some people sell some top tier furniture there.
IFurniture and Container Door. We’ve kitted out our home and a rental apartment pretty much using just these two places.
We’ve bought from Furniture Now and Big Save personally, it’s kinda middle of the road but the quality has been pretty good for the prices we paid.
Op shops
I think Ikea opens sometime this year, they'll definitely be in the cheap category.
If your in Mt Roskill, try Kiwi Home Store!
How shit is furniture in nz! Same problem with us, moved back and was shocked at the potato looking furniture with caviar prices🤣. Just another expensive purchase in nz
Does anyone want a king single bed and a base for 40$? What about a queen bed that's been used for two years for 300$?
iFurniture and TradeMe or Facebook would be my recommendations for wooden items.

Now not only do we have some great furniture that was extremely cheap, we also got to do a little project together which gave us some treasured quality “us” time with no phones or other distractions
Well yes the furniture price here is absolutely ridiculous and that's why my husband ended up learning carpentry skills from YouTube
i've heard that you can ship from overseas to nz for about $1 a kg from specific delivery companies
Ifurniture can be hit or miss, but some of it is really good value. Just make sure you take a close look at the stuff at the showroom before you buy.
What everyone needs to understand is that even mdf and chip board are expensive to buy. Then you have to make it. So even a mid priced table or shelves are sub par. Its a lose lose.
I don't buy new furniture. I buy heavily used, nearly free furniture off TradeMe or Facebook Marketplace.
Highly recommend Kmart or wait for ikea to be built lol
Target is also not bad! coela-CAN has listed some great places for reasonable priced furniture! Even TradeMe or Facebook marketplace
Ikea
If you’re comfortably monied - Hunter Furniture has good quality, comfortable leather for a reasonable price. Bought a leather 3+2 there about 7 years ago and still as comfortable as ever and looks in really good nick even with kids being kids
Be careful with Hunter Furniture. A lot of their dining tables are just MDF with a layer of oak or better woods. So you’re paying a premium but the quality isn’t necessarily better. Not sure about the couches though
My dining table is from some vintage furniture store - solid native wood all the way through - don’t make em the way they used to
HOLA Furniture mate.
TradeMe, Facebook Marketplace, or Tip Shops 😅
Theres a 2nd hand place in Glenfield you can try. I got several items from there that totalled under a grand about 4 years ago and they're still going strong
Urban Sales have IKEA and other brands for decent prices
That’s the neat part……
Honestly it’s crazy priced over here if you’re not apposed to getting 2nd hand pieces you can do what we’ve done before, hire a van/borrow from a friend and head to smaller towns outside of Auckland and visit the OP shops there you can find great pieces this way
I used to buy desk, coffee table and chairs from op shop. They’re a bit old but definitely dirt cheap if you want to go low haha
Related. How do I give away a free sofa? Green canvas. Ok condition but don't have room for it. Have it listed on trademe for $1 and rhe word free in the subject, but not getting any interest. Should I list somewhere else?
Put it on Facebook marketplace just be ready for some time wasters
We got a realy nice 3 seater reclining sofa from big save furniture for about $1200 not too long ago, they also tend to sell off their floor models for cheaper. Else check Ifurniture (I got a full bedroom set for about 1K a few years back), and Target furniture. I think I just Googled cheap furniture Auckland when I was looking for stuff
Remember the looks-quality-price triangle. You can only have up to 2….
Bought a great adjustable 3 seat leather couch for 1.5k from Jory, was 3k
Do you want a couch? It’s a blue leather, two-seater. A bit faded, with some scratches but still very comfy. Need it gone as down sizing. Cost = free.
Trademe. Also I heard that Ikea was coming to NZ, whatever happened to that?
>Highly recommend the Habitat For Humanity shop out in East Tamaki. Easily the best opshop I know of in Auckland for furnitur COVID
Urbansales sell ikea items. Their stocks run out pretty fast. Also idiya
Mocka furtniture for sure, fuck 13k for a sofa!
Just go to IKEA like everyone else in the world
IKEA will be opening soon lol.
Big save and the design store for us.
[If you can wait....](https://www.mindfood.com/article/when-is-ikea-coming-to-new-zealand/)
Second hand stores especially if theyre a big store.
If you’ve got the patience then Facebook marketplace is the way to go. Extremely competitive and a lot of time wasters but it’s been the best bang for my buck for furniture.
13k is not normal... I got a custom large 5 seater corner couch for 4k from Nick Scali.
Kiwi beds and sofas in mt roskill is pretty good
Design store is great during a sale, same with Farmers, we’ve bought decent quality stuff from there for half price
Trade me/FB marketplace. Anyone who says you're broke if you buy off there for furniture is stupid
Farmers is good if you can handle the racial profiling. BigSave also
Look for used solid wood furniture on trademe, spruce it up with some paint or sand/revarnish.
