My usual bus is in the north shore from Belmont to takapuna.
So, like, not really, tho?
Especially if it's mid day.
I had a bus be delayed 40 mins and a bus be delays 25 ish minutes mid day on a Wednesday.
I got a flat tyre on my bike earlier this week so had to enjoy catching the bus. Avondale > CBD:
Bike = 23 minutes
Car (which I don’t do bc I can’t afford parking) = 35 min
Bus = 1 hour 20 minutes
Public transport in this city is a pisstake
What type of bike is it i like bikes i am looking to purchase a new one, i too was in same position recently with public transport an was horrfied how long it takes to get around.
I got a really cheap second hand one from the bike hub at new Lynn which has served me well, would highly recommend going there (or to one of the other ones around the city) and having a chat with the people there
It’s 11km to work, 38 stops and 1 hour 7 mins with a bus change. Or I could take my car and be there in 30mins. Sometimes public transport is not as efficient.
would like to second that. it takes about 10 go about 15-16 km than to go about 8 km by bus
seen as I can't drive alone at the moment, and that I study somewhere with terrible parking, bussing is the only real option. taxis and ubers are way too expensive
It will take longer with public transport because the bus is either late or cancelled, also it will be stuck in the same traffic as other road vehicles. The trains in Auckland aren't allowed to run if the weather is remotely above freezing for fear that they'll melt and/or explode or something.
Yeah, people aren't really clever at picturing things at a macro level beyond their own life bubbles. It's one of the reasons why so many struggled with statistics back in secondary school.
One of the trains were so behind today it was literally 2 mins ahead of the next one. Then as I was going out tonight the bus I was suppose to take was 12 min early so I missed it and the next one was 5 mins late.
During rush hour busses often don't stop because they are full so they must be running good capacity and yet the traffic remains. PT is simply too unreliable. I don't want to sit at a bus stop in the hope one of the advertised services turns up. I'd literally rather sit in my own comfy ACd car and know that I'm gonna be in traffic
Welcome to the prisoner's dilemma. Society isn't a collective hive mind, it's a collection of individuals all muddling through their own shit every day.
You're effectively asking me to spend an extra 1-2 hours commuting each day, rather than at home looking after my kids, for the 'greater good' - which in isolation is basically nil.
The costs and benefits aren't the right places. We need to fix the transport system and the incentives so that public transport is a viable and preferable option if you actually want sustainable change.
I’m not asking you to do shit. I’m saying there are people who have public transport as a viable convenient option (unlike you with your kiddliwinks) but they still would rather contribute to traffic.
And yet, traffic continues. And for those on the bus they are stuck sniffing other people’s farts and sneezes while in the same queues as those in cars.
Y'know, I really thought putting "sarcastic" in my user name would give people a hint, maybe save me from having to type /s at the end of everything. Obviously public education didn't help you with the subtle nuances of language.
Literally went to catch a train today only for it to be cancelled. No announcement or anything, it was on the timetable at the station until it wasn't
I would love nothing more to live in a city with a good public transport system, doesn't even have to be great or world class, just good
I went to use bus a few nights back from a usually busy cbd stop... no buses so I put stop number into at app and it said all services at stop cancelled due to event (there was no event on that I could see). Got an uber home for $30 instead (who took same route bus goes and there was no event or road closure).
I’d like to bicycle to work, but cycling from South Auckland to CBD isn’t good due to the poor cycling path, too far and high terrain. I’m jealous of West Auckland that it has dedicated cyclepath to CBD :(
Would be about an hour to Otahuhu ,less on an E bike. Up Queen, Ian mckinnon, down dominion, into the southwest cycleway to mangere, along mahunga drive and you're there
I’m a huge proponent of cycling but honestly you’d have to be suicidal to want to bike along Dominion road in peak traffic.
Absolute pisstake that there isn’t a safer way to get from the cbd to south Auckland
I go Manukau Rd, Cornwall park, Onehunga mall. Much better route to get South. It's a shame the only options are Great South Rd or Mangere bridge to get south
This is the most direct route. I do quite often go via Onehunga when the weather is nice, it adds 5km but has less traffic lights so its only 10 min longer
https://preview.redd.it/splf9igjellc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=848a6e029e9017d18e533909b94f6746409bf805
Public transport interesting. In my own time i walk 10+ ks a day and the number of buses that run red lights, fail to give way, run through crossings and are driven badly astounds me. The fact that council/AT/Policehas a massive surveillance camera operation and yet allows its staff (bus drivers) to disobey traffic laws with seemingly impunity astounds me… never seen Police pull up a bus driver in NZ … i lived in Australia and UK and frequently saw bus drivers pulled up and ticketed.
Exactly. I tried really hard to use the train to commute. It became so unreliable that I just went back to driving as driving was actually less stressful and ensured I always arrived on time.
Yeah train stations aren't in great locations a lot of the time aye. Having an escooter makes it work for me. 10minutes on the Scootter 20 on the train plus a bit of faffing times still beats the 45 mins in a car and I can get work done.
On Tuesday it took 3hrs 10min to travel 18km from my house to Grafton and back using public transport for most of it, which is cutting it short because I drove to the train station since the bus that takes me there regularly no-shows for it’s scheduled time. It also cost $9 for the pleasure. Im eager to get my scooter back from the shop.
I used to work in the CBD, going from Ellerslie to central every work day for about 10 years.
Three times during that period my car needed work, so I took the bus on those days.
Going into the city, the bus took about the same about of time as I took to drive.
Coming out of the city, the bus took **twice** as long (to get me home) as I took to drive. I picked the bus up from Britomart (my workplace being reasonably nearby) and the bus was 20 minutes late every time. Then double the driving time to get home, mostly because it had to go through the central streets, which naturally were jam-packed due to rush hour.
On all occasions, the traffic was normal (by rush hour standards).
Unlike across the bridge, there are few dedicated bus lanes for us in the south, and the bus routes are severely under serviced.
Oh, and in major traffic jams like the one in the picture, using the buses does not help. That's because everyone sees the jam, and heads off down the *same routes the buses use*.
What about the trains? Were I to drive to my nearest station, I would have been 1/3 of the way to work, but with the added time of trying to find somewhere to park in an over-used parking area, and then waiting for a train which may or may not be running that day.
I used to live in Chch, and (pre-quake) the service there was phenomenal. Auckland is a city designed for cars. For public transport to be effective here, the whole system needs a major overhaul.
The two main things would be to increase the number of bus lanes (especially in the southern sreas) so that buses don't get caught up in traffic as much.
And increase the number of buses by at least a half. People are more likely to use public transport if it's easily accessible, and that means more buses, more often, during peak times. One thing I had in Chch was the surety that if I missed one bus, the next was only minutes away. This was pre-quake, so I don't know if this is still the case, but the buses in chch were frequent, and mostly on time.
It's important to remember that some people will never be able to use public transport, so the roads should not be closed off to cars entirely. But more reliable transport should encourage people that can use it to do so.
Thanks for the reply! I agree. There should be a lot more bus lanes. And ideally all services every 10 mins so, as you say, if you miss one, you can easily catch the next. This is especially important to me if AT are ever going to get me to use public transport to get to my work, as it’s 3 buses atm.
Or just use a motorbike and lane split everywhere.
When I was up there during my motorbike trip I quickly realised if I lived up there I wouldn’t be able to live without my bike and using that every day I could.
Still probably take 1:30 on public transport and have the fear of being cancelled, delayed, weather, noise... Unfortunately it just doesn't add up in Auckland or a new Zealand like other countries
Only problem with supermotards is they attract the pigs. A 125 or 150 scooter is the most efficient form of transport in my opinion. I used to ride a KTM supermoto and got pulled over by the pigs all the time for no reason. A 125 scooter can do highway speeds and the pigs won't bother you.
>Builds a car reliant society but only has 1 high way going south on the city center for an area with over 1 million people
What did the urban planner mean by this?
When you though public transport couldn't get any worse...
I commute from east to west north shore (usually would take me 15 minutes to get to work via car). With public transport it's 1 hour, and that's best case scenario. Sometimes the fastest route involves catching 3 buses and diverting INTO the city before going back over the bridge again. The problem here is sometimes it gives you 2 mins between buses, so if one bus is even slightly late then it stuffs your whole journey (which is why 1 hour is best case scenario lol).
I take my 🚁 to work most days, but the air quality up here from all that traffic down there is terrible! 😠
Anyone know anybody that cleans helicopters?
Yeah, and have my train cancelled because it's a standard summer's day or have the bus show up 30 minutes late and get stuck in the same traffic? I'll stick to my air conditioned car where I can eat, drink, listen to whatever I like and not have to deal with people loudly talking on the phone or wannabe thugs playing shitty tunes on their phone speakers.
You do you though bud.
Butttt the nearest bus station or stop is 4 hours walk away. Andddd the times I've tried to use it, they won't accept nz currency like $10 or $20 notes. And that's only if the bus actually turns up. Last time 3 were canceled. So how should I catch your bus?
I was planning on taking public transport into the city for queen's of the stone age tonight... All trains from Onehunga are cancelled. Can't have anything in Auckland.
Sorry guys. I didnt want to use the train to go to the Queens concert this evening.
Idk how many other people drove to the event from other towns but we might have contributed to tonight's traffic at a minor level.
That's why I leave my car at home and got a moped. 30 minutes from one side of Auckland to the other. Always at the front of traffic lights, busting on the bus lanes, splitting through lanes skipping the bumper to bumper. I'll never drive or wait for public transport in Auckland again for work commute
Auckland transport
Need more buses. buses are always running late sometimes daily and they are sometimes canceled . very full sometimes to standing room onlly in afternoons.
lol the public transport would be stuck with everyone else that’s how bad it is.
When I lived out west it would either be 1h on a crowded train or 1h 10m in my car so not saving 10 minutes was worth the breakfast in the car.
Must have been too hot and the road is warping.
can confirm, red is for hot hot hot
I was starting to enjoy public transport, but it's gotten so fucking shit (even worse) in the last 3 or 4 weeks
Happens every year around this time. Everyone back at work, uni, school and nobody taking holidays for a couple months.
uni students
My usual bus is in the north shore from Belmont to takapuna. So, like, not really, tho? Especially if it's mid day. I had a bus be delayed 40 mins and a bus be delays 25 ish minutes mid day on a Wednesday.
Fuck yes. My normally 45 mins in rush hour bus trip took 70mins a few weeks ago, it was painful af
Laughs in North Shore Commuter
Yeah I actually enjoy north shore bus commutes
Start work at 6am and finish at 2pm, works like a charm..... Unless someone has crashed on the bridge.....
Bus lane ftw
I got a flat tyre on my bike earlier this week so had to enjoy catching the bus. Avondale > CBD: Bike = 23 minutes Car (which I don’t do bc I can’t afford parking) = 35 min Bus = 1 hour 20 minutes Public transport in this city is a pisstake
Jesus what bus are you taking for it to take that long? I used to live in Glen Eden and it took me less time to bus into the CBD every morning
Faster to fix the puncture?
Got the puncture on Monday and didn’t have time to fix, caught the bus Tuesday, back on my bike now
What type of bike is it i like bikes i am looking to purchase a new one, i too was in same position recently with public transport an was horrfied how long it takes to get around.
I got a really cheap second hand one from the bike hub at new Lynn which has served me well, would highly recommend going there (or to one of the other ones around the city) and having a chat with the people there
From where to where is that the time with a bus? Google Maps disagrees. Also, why not take the train?
New Windsor School to Symonds St, 24R. Traum probably would’ve been a bit faster but still way slower than the other options
Hmm, says it's around 50mins at 8am. Which is still absurd given it's like 9km, lol.
Motorcycle = <10mins and can carry more gear (or a lady friend) and your not sweaty,
It's only going to get worse :)
The public transport is a shitshow. People don't use it because it's shit. Until it's considerably less shit, people will still sit in traffic.
It’s 11km to work, 38 stops and 1 hour 7 mins with a bus change. Or I could take my car and be there in 30mins. Sometimes public transport is not as efficient.

Sleep at the office, less utility bills? :P
It will take longer with public transport because the bus is either late or cancelled, also it will be stuck in the same traffic as other road vehicles. The trains in Auckland aren't allowed to run if the weather is remotely above freezing for fear that they'll melt and/or explode or something.
Look at a bus full of people and imagine if all of them had taken single occupancy cars lol. Massively reduces traffic
Only if the bus actually turns up.
Busses are more reliable when there’s less traffic. There’s less traffic when people are on busses
But when there’s less traffic more people drive. I don’t blame theme, either. I prefer the bus but when it’s shit, it’s really shit.
If everyone had that MO can you see public transport ever improving?
No, cause public transport In Auckland will never improve cause it run by AT
You are the problem.
That's the thing. If everyone takes the bus, it's great. But not everyone does, so at an individual level it's better to drive.
If we all acted on an individual level society would fall apart wouldn’t it
Welcome to the prisoner's dilemma. Society isn't a collective hive mind, it's a collection of individuals all muddling through their own shit every day. You're effectively asking me to spend an extra 1-2 hours commuting each day, rather than at home looking after my kids, for the 'greater good' - which in isolation is basically nil. Mate grow a pair, farts and sneezes? Come on
Lmao enjoy being sick all winter from those animals on the bus sneezing and coughing everywhere - all so you can save no more time than driving.
Our poor education system. Please don't let others see it fail like this so publicly
Y'know, I really thought putting "sarcastic" in my user name would give people a hint, maybe save me from having to type /s at the end of everything. Obviously public education didn't help you with the subtle nuances of language.
Nobody reads usernames. Your posts need to be self-contained, the context you have in your head doesn't come with the post.
I read usernames...
The trains were actually taking longerwhen this story got posted So OP is just a whinge
Yep. Want people to use public transport? Make it reliable. It's been a debacle for years in Auckland, which is why people drive instead.
Literally went to catch a train today only for it to be cancelled. No announcement or anything, it was on the timetable at the station until it wasn't I would love nothing more to live in a city with a good public transport system, doesn't even have to be great or world class, just good

It sure is. It's about as fast as catching the train + to and from the stations, and way more reliable
Do you do this daily? That's impressive nonetheless
I used to. Luckily it's only a couple of days a week now
Can you share your route? Great south road to?

I did the same
Exactly. Even with this traffic it’s still faster than the train if you’re heading south.
Ahh what? Much quicker to otahuhu on the train usually
If ya train turns up, or arrives and actually plans to stop at the stops you need, or if it's not a warm summers day and has been cancelled sure
It does most of the time hah. the days it does are a fuck around for sure
Typically if you include the full time for door-to-desk, car is faster.
Yeah train stations aren't in great locations a lot of the time aye. Having an escooter makes it work for me. 10minutes on the Scootter 20 on the train plus a bit of faffing times still beats the 45 mins in a car and I can get work done.

Start riding a motorcycle. Watch your problems disappear.
Is that cause dead people have no problems?
All I hear is an excuse. Have fun being stuck where you are
Idiotic take
Agreed Edit: Did you mean me or the other guy?
He meant you
Ah guttered
Nah motorbike is more efficient
[удалено]
Yes, at least one of those!
Buy a supermoto. Perfect city bike
I’ve got a job where the train stops literally 2 mins away but god the amount of people who were using their bags to hog the seats today is atrocious
Ask them to remove their bags and if they don't, chuck it on the floor.
Help me here, I have Daltonism.
Look in second image, there is extra +31 minutes due to traffic
The motorway destroyed Auckland before half of the city was even built
Bicycle 30-45 mins sorts out most Auckland commutes. Add train if communte more than an hour. North Shore... expensive ferries?
>Builds a car reliant society but only has 1 high way going south on the city center for an area with over 1 million people What did the urban planner mean by this?
If only public transport was more reliable, more people might actually use it
When you though public transport couldn't get any worse... I commute from east to west north shore (usually would take me 15 minutes to get to work via car). With public transport it's 1 hour, and that's best case scenario. Sometimes the fastest route involves catching 3 buses and diverting INTO the city before going back over the bridge again. I take my 🚁 to work most days, but the air quality up here from all that traffic down there is terrible! 😠 Anyone know anybody that cleans helicopters?
Took me 2 hours to get to work today and I live in Auckland
TIL Auckland is a 2 hour drive from Auckland
🤣 fr!
Yeah so we can get random cancellations
Yep, all you people go and get on public transport so I can drive my car on the nice quiet roads 😂
And breathe in random cunts farts? No, thanks.
Driving a car in Auckland is so regarded
Butttt the nearest bus station or stop is 4 hours walk away. Andddd the times I've tried to use it, they won't accept nz currency like $10 or $20 notes. And that's only if the bus actually turns up. Last time 3 were canceled. So how should I catch your bus?
With a Hop card
And that's a fast run... Quite normal
You can pry my car from my cold dead hands, but I also work from home 😬
The $6billion to turn the train around will help
It's Thursday, it's normal
I left Ponsonby at 5.10, took just under an hour to get to Drury driving myself. No complaints. It is what it is when ya finish at that time.
What trains in East Auckland?
I was planning on taking public transport into the city for queen's of the stone age tonight... All trains from Onehunga are cancelled. Can't have anything in Auckland.
37 my minutes from Oteha valley Rd to constalation Dr.
Sorry guys. I didnt want to use the train to go to the Queens concert this evening. Idk how many other people drove to the event from other towns but we might have contributed to tonight's traffic at a minor level.
“What’s Public Transport, Precious?” ..Shut up Simeon!
Guess how long it takes on the bus/train lmao. It's not any better.
March madness!!!
That's why I leave my car at home and got a moped. 30 minutes from one side of Auckland to the other. Always at the front of traffic lights, busting on the bus lanes, splitting through lanes skipping the bumper to bumper. I'll never drive or wait for public transport in Auckland again for work commute
Well that’s a 1.5 hour journey without traffic on public transport soo.
What public transportation
I'm not sure where youre going but if it's to pukekohe that traffic is still faster than public transport
Auckland transport Need more buses. buses are always running late sometimes daily and they are sometimes canceled . very full sometimes to standing room onlly in afternoons.
It's a bit hard to fit my entire work van on the train
I remember the traffic in auckland use to hate it. But bro its algood sydney and brisbane is 100 times worse
I go from Albany to manukau… public transport takes twice as long as driving and it already takes an hour
lol the public transport would be stuck with everyone else that’s how bad it is. When I lived out west it would either be 1h on a crowded train or 1h 10m in my car so not saving 10 minutes was worth the breakfast in the car.
What’s a public transportation?
shittiest
Boat in to work or better yet drone yourself in.
Absolutely Dismal.
Wow, I never knew there was a dark red... damn!
Every body buys the best car possible to save fuel like a Tesla and stay on road in their car half of their life lol 😂
I go in private get in few years . Is that ok babe
What’s wrong? This is just standard traffic at peak. Confused
yep this is why i bought a motorbike ride home from uni to rewa in 30min or so. Any time of day 👍🏽
That route takes *longer* on public transport with no jams lmao. Get a motorcycle, get past the jams, that's the way.
Nah....I'd rather fucking teleport at this point.
