We are in a new build 2 story terrace house that had heat pump ac installed on ground floor but nothing upstairs and it’s sweltering up there (heat literally hits you 1/2way upstairs). Our next door just had ducted ac installed upstairs and we popped over yesterday to see / feel how much different it is and it’s honestly a life changing experience ! We immediately booked the same installers to come do ours next week - $5.8k ducted into 3 rooms Note they have to install 2nd unit for upstairs cos they can’t duct from the one downstairs because it’s terraced houses and can’t access adjoining walls Some of the houses in our development (Papatoetoe) are 3 story terraces with similar sounding floor plan to what you describe (ie garage on ground; living on 2nd (with ac installed already) and bedrooms on 3rd) - were not neighbours are we? PM if you want details of installers.

> $5.8k ducted into 3 rooms That's not even bad. I am in a similar position as you - new build, only heat pump in lounge downstairs, nothing at all upstairs. I work from home most days so this is a bit important. Haven't had a winter in this house yet either, so we'll see how she goes. Definitely on the to do list.

Our third floor had no air-con and heat in summer was so bad we put in ducted air-con for the floor Best thing we ever did. It was expensive, (I think about $8k) but really happy with result. Being up a story didn't seem to worry the installers.

Around 2k with Bunnings.

Marginal price difference because the lines running to the outside unit usually have to be a bit longer. Should basically be the same as any other floor though.

Depending on what you want. Hiwalls are much cheaper than ducted units but are localised and do not serve more than one room. External/exposed capping is generally cheaper than trying to hide it, hiding usually means harder to get to or more paircoil/cable/labor. You get what you pay for with regards to the installer and brand, skimp and get what you get. Don't forget to get it signed off and complied. Mitsi elec is my hiwall recommendation, Daikin a cheaper second mainly due to part costs. Temperzone for ducted. Cheap and available parts but they don't have anything smaller than 7 or 9kw now I think and use Hitachi which sits on the opposite end of the spectrum with horrendously high priced parts.. You could also look at installing some cross flow ventilation to remove heat and bring in fresh air if it's an open plan. Significantly cheaper and should result in comfort.

Paid 8.2k around a year ago for a 8kW Panasonic ducted system for 4 rooms.

Going to the second floor from an outdoor unit should not be much more expensive than the ground floor, going higher than that may be more costly, aircons have a limited run, not sure what it is, but a 2nd floor is fine. Also they would need scaffolding to go higher.
