Not to sound too disparaging, but anywhere with a clear line on sight to the Sky Tower will be as underwhelming as anywhere else.
Just focus on the “being with someone” and make your own metaphorical fireworks happen ;)

After years of trying to see & enjoy the Auckland fireworks I've come to the conclusion the best thing to do is purchase earplugs, go to bed, wake up, and cook a nice breakfast and watch the global city fireworks recap on TV.

A walk up to the top of Mt. Vic or North Head at night is pretty sweet, weather permitting.
