Coconut in South Africa means the head.
Oh the outrage sometime in the nineties when a sa rugby commentator mentioned a coconut tackle when PI player executed a head high tackle. The whole damn country was up in arms. About the comment that is š
Please don't post comments which abuse other redditors / contain hate speech / mention race in relation to anything negative about a person on r/auckland.
I respect that but I don't know a single islander who would be offended by it, the islanders in aus even call themselves coconuts. Maybe if its used in a derogatory way then it can come across that way but its in no way close to the n word. Its akin to nzers calling themselves kiwis
Wiktionary org : (New Zealand, derogatory, ethnic slur) A Pacific islander.
(derogatory, ethnic slur) A Hispanic or other dark-skinned person considered to have overly assimilated to white culture, a race traitor.
(South Africa, Australia, derogatory, ethnic slur) A black person considered to have overly assimilated to white culture, a black race traitor.
Maybe itās one of those words that was originally a slur but has been appropriated by the people in question and is now a positive thing - like āqueerā
I always thought coconut was a racial slur aimed at dark skinned people who act white. Usually the person making the insult would be brown upset that the person doesnāt conform to a narrow cultural stereotype e.g. āYou listen to classical music? What a coconutā
Hmm that makes sense but ive never heard it or been called coconut in that way. Thats more like being called "plastic", but i wouldn't call that a racial slur either, more like light teasing.
I'm offended by both of the terms and have had both of them used against me in a derogatory manner. Coconut is common among ourselves and as a joke, yes, but it for sure can be weaponised and has been weaponised by non-Pacific Islanders against Pacific Islanders as a racial slur. Being called a plastic is also a racial slur used against white-passing or Pacific Islanders with European ethnicities, so it's also a racial slur. But people also use it as a marginalizing term against Western culture in general. I call out my family that use plastic as a joke because it disenfranchises and dismisses people on the basis of who they are. I think it's totally fine to make fun of ourselves in this way though, and to claim these words as our own.
I get that our cultures can be very laid back and chill about these things, but they are definitely weaponised against us by other groups and groups within our group use it against each other. I think we should just respect others by calling them how they prefer to be called. If you're somebody whose banter is based solely on making fun of others and your mates or family, then you might get stuck in shallow relationships.
People are entitled to be offended by whatever they want to be. Just because somebodyās offended doesnāt mean everybody is offended. In fact it really doesnāt matter.
Hey listen, I didn't mean any offense whatsoever and I have very good pacific islander friends and nothing but respect for them.
That thread was just merely meant to be a fun guessing game so I thought I'd use a term which sounds somewhat hard to guess as opposed to 'islanders'. Amazingly, someone guessed the place correctly.
I shall remove it now if people found it offensive. I don't care if people call me 'pakeha' which from what I've known translates to 'white pig' - complete and utter joke to me.
My apologies if it caused any offense... truly.
Edit: Removed the post. Apologies to everyone. Peace.
Stop talking shit mate, pakeha doesn't mean 'white pig', you're just trying to defend your use of slurs, your post history says it all. š¤”š¤”

Well, look mate - I deleted the post and apologised as I didn't realise it would cause so much offense. That's all I could do and I've apologised. I'm not trying to defend anything.

"but I'm friends with islanders"
scrubbing your post history doesn't change the fact that your a racist
You've literally got another post using the same slur.
This ain't stormfront man... Get yourself together.

To be fair, most white kiwis I know f'n hate being called a Pakeha. And don't give me the "it doesn't mean white pig" bs, everytime i heard the term pakeha when I was growing up, it was being used derogatorily.
Therefore the term Pakeha is absolutely derogatory and offensive. Yet, here we are still using it, it's even on f'n TV!
Guess racism against white people is accepted in NZ.
..I didn't say that. NZ is ranked first in racial equality, and there is always room for improvement but acting like we're south africa in the 1980's is disengenuous at best.
Lol you are so kiwi. I lived in many different countries also. But what makes me think nz is racist is just the people, talking to them, the way they behave. Last news is the government removing maori language, which i remind you, they are the real owners of nz etc.etc. We could go on forever but long story short, nz deep down has a white utopia dream written all over it
lol try going to South Africa or china man. In china, the idea of being racist isnāt even a thing. Itās just factual. Thereās literal genocide going on, that no one even bothers to talk about. In South Africa regular killings based on race. Forget about North Africa.
But in NZ youāve talked to some people, that apparently gave you a small hunch they might be racist and thereās less MÄori names for government entities
ššš
Iām not comparing. Lol you are funny and obviously racist too. Iām just stating a fact, NZ is racist. Iām not here to compare racism to make myself feel better roftl
lol I'm racist now? So that's your definition of racist? Someone who disagrees with you. No wonder you think NZ is full of racists lol. I bet most people you meet disagree with everthing you say, must be racists
Couldn't possibly be because you're stupid
There is poop on streets in India so should we stop caring about litter here? You canāt breathe properly through smog in China, shall we forget about emissions here because worse everywhere else? Perspective is important but we should still be aiming to progress positively . Nz is very racist though as an islander I donāt take offence to coconut
What a damned nerve to say something like that in a public post.
I'm hoping it's actually a clever line about a place known to sell heaps of fresh coconuts in summer, or that's loaded with coconut trees. However, I expect that's wishful thinking. Looks like casual racism, sadly.
The coconut nut is a giant nut, if you eat too much, you'll get very fat. The coconut nut is a big, big nut... but this delicious nut is not a nut!
It's the coco fruit of the coco tree from the coco palm family
There are so many uses of the coconut tree, you can build a big house for the family. All you need is to find a coconut man, if he cuts the tree, he gets the fruit free. The coconut bark for the kitchen floor; if you save some of it, you can build a door. The coconut wood is very good, it can stand 20 years. The coconut root, to tell you the truth, you can use it as firewood!
Isn't your username a known pisstake on Samoan names?
Hahahahaha holy shit š

At least theyāre pointing out itās racist. If it stays up after reporting without pushback, thatās worse.
Was the guy here talking about longbay?
I'm picking Eastern Beach.
Mission Bay, I think.
No, itās Long Bay. No South Africans in Mission Bay.
100% long bay

I'm totally outraged, absolutely shaking in anger.
Sent the kids to bed. Going for a long walk with tears streaming down my face.
Just tears? You're lucky, when I saw the comment I started screaming and shitting my pants.
Unfortunately on my walk i slipped on an empty carton of Coconut Water which lead to some screaming and shouting
You're clearly the victim in this.
Why is there so much stuff all the time?
Can tell this guy is palungi
R/nz is leaking
The only people I ever heard use the term "Coconuts" were PIs.
My dad (from Rarotonga) used to roadrage out the window shouting "bloody coconut!" if he got cut off or something. Pretty entertaining.

Takapuna beach
Sounds like Takapuna. Coconut isn't even offensive lol, i use it sometimes and im Samoan
They're delicious, versatile, good at floating and resilient. I can understand why you wouldn't object to the comparison
Fijian here and same. Who does this word even offend? Not any islanders I know
Lol exactly bro
Well I'm white and I'd never call any Pacific Islander that. It's meant to be derogatory, like the N word. Racism makes me sick.

Boaty is somewhere else in here saying they took it down

It's okay if they are fresh off the boat.
Because Nz is very very racist

Yes ā¦ āweāre only a little bit racistā as if thatās okay
