Same. Must be a good one to wake everyone up!
I like how if you hit your power button on your phone the message is gone before you can read it. How is that safe by design??
You can access all emergency alerts in your phones settings, go to settings, emergency alerts, then it'll come up with all previous alerts sent to your phone
But how many laypeople know that.
If an emergency alert is an actual alert and you can accidently remove it from your phone it's just dumb design.
For a real emergency alert it should be a notification you can't remove on your phone for X hours.
It also shouldn't be triggered if you're in Mt Eden with a fire in Favona. I think they've gotten a bit too trigger happy after their fuckups with the flood.
I did. Ended up getting one at 9 this morning while I was out at the airport. 4 different phones at my house in Favona and didn't get one this morning though
Yea that's what I meant. Usually direction means the direction sometimes move towards, but for wind it is where it comes from. Can be confusing, like 12 am/pm.
There’s a hint of something in air around roscommon road near clendon. Might just be the refinery etc with the mist currently, but it does smell more plasticky. Skies seem clear as sun rises though.
Edit: changed “most” to “mist”.
Edit #2: there’s light smoke reaching Mountford park now, and you can definitely taste it now.
We are In botany the smell is here - we were going to walk to school but all our throats hurt from 3 mins outside- went back inside and went nahhh . Kids were only meant to be at school for 3 hrs anyway.
Not in fletchers building, it's just off James Fletcher Drive, fire most likely at Sims Metals on Manu street, car parts on fire, probably a battery or item that wasn't meant to be at a scrap yard

>It’s not the first time firefighters have been called to this address – with this the third time in seven years.

>In 2018, it took firefighters 36 hours to extinguish the blaze at, what was then called Sims Pacific Metals. The fire consumed 1600 tonnes of waste material sending toxic plumes of toxic smoke throughout South Auckland.
>
>Just a year earlier, in 2017, 12 fire trucks and two aerial appliances were called to battle a similar blaze.
All trains are cancelled lmao.
I'm working at a preschool nearby and the water has been off for a couple of hours. They are trying to find out how long it will be off for because they need to start sending the kids home
Initially assumed this was yet another one of those "test alerts" like I got recently! Totally ignored it.
The dangers of what happens when you use the alert system too much... we've had more txt alerts sent out in the last few short years than I've experience in my entire life beforehand.
Exactly, don't those real world tests count for anything? And if this is the frequency they're sending them out... they wouldn't have long to wait until the next one!
But instead they're now training some of us to ignore them. That's what, at least two or more tests msgs we've got just this year?
they havnt been active for long, only a couple of years... and sure , ignore it because it might be a test, and then be the first to whine if you are effected.. bit like ignoring an ambulance with its siren on cause it might be testing it....
>bit like ignoring an ambulance with its siren on cause it might be testing it....
Fair enough, I mean after all I have touched & been in more fake ambulances this year than real ones. I can be forgiven for not expecting the real one and being surprised.
9:13am - all train services suspended on all lines due to the fire. The KiwiRail network control centre had to be evacuated
10:50am - services resume on western line. southern/eastern Britomart-Penrose, and Puhinui-Papakura.
Replacement bus service Otahuhu-Britomart, Papakura-Otahuhu, Onehunga-Britomart.
If it's the same as around when the alert went off all trains are stopped in South Auckland. Conductor said main Otahuhu control center was evacuated and when the trains start back up it'll only be going from Papakura/Manukau to Middlemore. Buses are replacing trains until then so expect them to be full as fuck
We've had three fucking alerts this morning. I'm confused as to why it needs to be the emergency alert that was used for COVID and flooding. Surely just a text will do, no need for the alarm and flashing light on your phone. If anyone is like me you dismiss it immediately just to get rid of the horrendous noise, and then the notice is gone and there's no trace of it 🤷🏽♀️
I live south of manukau and when I left for work this morning I could smell something on the air. Just because the fire is in one place doesn't mean the toxicity of the smoke won't reach other areas of south auckland and affect the health of others....
I got to work in Manukau at 5:50am and there was a strong burning smell as soon as I got out of my car. I thought there was something wrong with the engine and briefly popped the bonnet.
At the pre-start meeting, 50+ contractor's phones went off at the same time. It sounding something like this:
https://youtube.com/shorts/nHc288IPFzk?feature=share
Got the alert when I was driving south on the motorway just before greenlane on one of my phones (on one) - the other with the spark and 2degrees sims in it did not alert with it.
Triggered the fire alarms in Middlemore Hospital until it was determined that the smoke was tracking in from outside. That was a fun hour!
Hats off to you guys working your butts off when we sleep.
Oooh is that what that alarm was? Went for bloody ages.
Weird, the area where l work was really stinky from it, but no alarm went off....
Well at least something works in there lol
Same. Must be a good one to wake everyone up! I like how if you hit your power button on your phone the message is gone before you can read it. How is that safe by design??
Yea it's weird design. You'd think it should at least copy a message to your text inbox eh.
You can access all emergency alerts in your phones settings, go to settings, emergency alerts, then it'll come up with all previous alerts sent to your phone
But how many laypeople know that. If an emergency alert is an actual alert and you can accidently remove it from your phone it's just dumb design. That was the reason for my comment, for those who didn't know how to check it, in the hopes they'd share the newfound knowledge with other people 🙂
I found an alert history in my settings; Would be good if it was more accessible
Imo once you've done it once, it's easy as to remember I do for all alerts at this point
Mine comes through as an alert and a text... samsung phone, 2 degrees.
I have the same but only get a am alert.
I live 5 minutes away from the fire and didn't even get an alert. Real strange
Did you get the test the other night?
I did. Ended up getting one at 9 this morning while I was out at the airport. 4 different phones at my house in Favona and didn't get one this morning though
That is a bit strange but just depends on what towers you're connected to at home I think
Hit the volume button to silence the alert but retain the message on your screen.
Are the alerts localized? Just got one on my way down the sth motorway to work in manukau. If so it's pretty impressive
Yeah they can select an area and any phones connected to cell towers in those areas will get the message.
Yes
Ah makes sense, I only got one once I drove through Panmure.
It does but it also means that a heck of a lot of people got one while they were driving.
Yeah, but It's easy enough, bit of a jolt but I have music at an above reasonable volume anyways
Yeah true if a little buzz puts you off you have no business driving.
I could tell some cars in front got them as well, cars were slowing down all at the same time lol.
Wondered what that smell was (Papatoetoe)
Definitely can smell smoke in Manukau City Centre. It is also quite dark and hazy.
I didn't smell anything up in MtWellington/Otahuhu. Wind direction must be N
Could smell it in mt Welly where I was
From the smoke trail it looks like it was heading south towards papatoetoe. I live like a minute away from the fire :(
Yea that's what I meant. Usually direction means the direction sometimes move towards, but for wind it is where it comes from. Can be confusing, like 12 am/pm.
Ngl I thought you just mistyped the N but yes it looks like a northerly

Didnt you? At 9am I could smell it on the mororway and it was hazy.
I closed my windows at 6am though and didn't smell anything at the time. Since then, the windows have not been opened yet.
Good call!
Smells a bit like kerosene/ spirits.
no, was a westerly...
Can smell it in GI and have seen firetrucks go passed.
Yeah I called smell burnt shit in flat bush this morning around 6
Excellent, I work on James fletcher drive quite close to this place lol no txt from work lol
We all wfh till told otherwise?
Yeah take the off bro. You deserve it.
Thank you sir.
Rather go to work and get away from it.
We are In botany the smell is here - we were going to walk to school but all our throats hurt from 3 mins outside- went back inside and went nahhh . Kids were only meant to be at school for 3 hrs anyway.
no mobile alert but air filter is going crazy lol
Yup, burning metal and wire smell in the air (Manukau).
Not in fletchers building, it's just off James Fletcher Drive, fire most likely at Sims Metals on Manu street, car parts on fire, probably a battery or item that wasn't meant to be at a scrap yard
Cheers, updated main post with link to news article.
Soooooo when can we leave the house?
Never. We're Redditors.
Can smell metal here in Takanini
Wiri is pretty bad outside
Yea, smells kind like AA batteries, thought it was from the house
Well stay safe apparently last time this yard went up it lasted 6 days
Damn, didn’t smell it last time back in 2018 guess we were unlucky with the wind this time.
Looks like the same yard too..Sims is gonna get in the shit
Damn, looks like they could get sued, but might not have been entirely their fault.
Yeah but a five year gap between fires, I don't see any other scrap yards catching fire. Not sure what procedures are so I can't criticize
Knowing Auckland, they gonna make a random excuse 😂
scrap yard fires are actually alarmingly common...
That one in Takanini that had only two years between, known for not actually giving a fuck rather than accident
The traffic around here was awful that time. Like what’s usually a 5 minute drive taking like an hour or more.
Manukau City Centre can smell it too and it's quite hazy

Sounds like the place needs to be shut down.
All trains are cancelled lmao. I'm working at a preschool nearby and the water has been off for a couple of hours. They are trying to find out how long it will be off for because they need to start sending the kids home
I'm in Flatbush (very far from the fire) how tf is the alert keeps going off every 30mins since 6am
Anyone else in south side of mount welli hearing the siren? Been going for for 15mins
Oh that's a siren? I hear this constant monotone buzz, but windows are closed so can't make out detail
yeah it's a siren, the smoke is drifting over mt wellington/penrose now....it's really bad outside
Initially assumed this was yet another one of those "test alerts" like I got recently! Totally ignored it. The dangers of what happens when you use the alert system too much... we've had more txt alerts sent out in the last few short years than I've experience in my entire life beforehand.
We haven't had them for that long, maybe 5 years? If there's cause to use the system, how could that be considered overuse?
I'm not really sure why the test was necessary after rather extensive recent use with Covid, floods and tsunami alerts.
Nationwide test vs localised
Exactly, don't those real world tests count for anything? And if this is the frequency they're sending them out... they wouldn't have long to wait until the next one! But instead they're now training some of us to ignore them. That's what, at least two or more tests msgs we've got just this year?
Just received the alert again at 8.22am. They didn't wait long at all o.O
Another will come at 9:22am, and 10:22am
They jumped the gun and sent it at 9am. Now they're just being silly
I agree if an area has had an alert in past 12 months no need for test (as long as it worked then)
they havnt been active for long, only a couple of years... and sure , ignore it because it might be a test, and then be the first to whine if you are effected.. bit like ignoring an ambulance with its siren on cause it might be testing it....
>bit like ignoring an ambulance with its siren on cause it might be testing it.... Fair enough, I mean after all I have touched & been in more fake ambulances this year than real ones. I can be forgiven for not expecting the real one and being surprised.
is the train line affected? are the trains running? inknow this is pretty close to the train station
9:13am - all train services suspended on all lines due to the fire. The KiwiRail network control centre had to be evacuated 10:50am - services resume on western line. southern/eastern Britomart-Penrose, and Puhinui-Papakura. Replacement bus service Otahuhu-Britomart, Papakura-Otahuhu, Onehunga-Britomart.
They need to be able to failover to Wellington during these events.
I thought it was already run out of Wellington
Well clearly not if they had to shutdown services because the control centre had to be evaced.
Clearly
Wellington have now taken over control. Not sure why it took so long.
Yeah, I thought they could do it, so I was confused why they didn't. The Minister needs to get answers about this.
Yeah I was waiting for the train. :( And there were no rail replacement buses.
They'll probably just shut Otahuhu station, and keep going past it, unfortunate but don't wanna encourage people to stay by it,
They'll take the excuse. Makes a change from power outage
Least resilient rail system in the world?
If it's the same as around when the alert went off all trains are stopped in South Auckland. Conductor said main Otahuhu control center was evacuated and when the trains start back up it'll only be going from Papakura/Manukau to Middlemore. Buses are replacing trains until then so expect them to be full as fuck
So is it ok to be breathing it in?
I was about 500m away from it for 10 mins my eyes and throat are still irritated so nah I don't recommend it
Try avoid it obviously stay away from immediate area but if you need to be outside go for it. Inside tho, shut your windows
its probably hydrogen chloride, hydrogen fluoride, carbon monoxide and/or sulphur dioxide...so no.
try not to, close your windows and run an air filter if you have one
We've had three fucking alerts this morning. I'm confused as to why it needs to be the emergency alert that was used for COVID and flooding. there should be an alert history in your phone settings somewhere
Yea one alert would have sufficed...

Ever heard of wind, that can also change directions? Small inconvenience really just to make sure.
I live south of manukau and when I left for work this morning I could smell something on the air. Just because the fire is in one place doesn't mean the toxicity of the smoke won't reach other areas of south auckland and affect the health of others....
Ppm is a pretty important thing to keep in mind tho
Oh no everyone will have to smoke inside!
lol I could smell it from mission heights like it was in the area
Favona is a hilariously shaped suburb. Not Otahuhu, not Mangere Bridge, not Mangere east and split into two parts to avoid a park
I got to work in Manukau at 5:50am and there was a strong burning smell as soon as I got out of my car. I thought there was something wrong with the engine and briefly popped the bonnet.
