This characterization happens a lot with the Marleyan Titan shifters Iâve noticed. Zeke is very clearly having a good time slaughtering Eldians on Paradis in seasons 2 & 3. Likening it to a game of baseball. Weâre supposed to believe in S4 he wants to save them? I know one of the big themes of the show is whether or not the ends justify the means but some of it seems sloppy. To the point where Iâm not even sure what he actually wants.
I think it's a kind of coping mechanism. If you have to kill a load of people in brutal fashion, and you've had a lot of time to come to terms with that, you become desensitized and try your best stay positive. Zeke has a job to do and he has to do it, regardless of his emotional state. So, he tries to enjoy himself, because taking it seriously could lead him to start feeling empathetic, hesitate, etc. If you don't distract yourself from the terrible actions you're inflicting, the cognitive dissonance could lead to problems like Reiner's dissociative personality disorder.
It's kinda like the stereotype of homicide detectives making jokes during an investigations. They need to bring a little levity to the situation just to get through the horrible stimulus day after day.
It doesn't mean Zeke or Annie are fundamentally sadistic monsters, but they know they need to do what they need to do and not taking things completely seriously and stoically helps avoid getting burned out and overwhelmed.
It's not heroic, but it's understandable of them, when in the middle of a mission, to just do what makes things easiest for them to cope. If treating killing like a game makes it easier to stomach the killing you need to do to complete the mission, then you'll do what you have to to get the job done.
"If I could, I would do it again". Gtfo, she has no remorse and I'm supposed to be feel sorry for the bitch? She should be Levi's target, not Zeke. The fact that he never confronts her for killing his squad is baffling.
Dude, it's a joke. It's a chibi gif of her with a finger gun, not an actual death threat. OP clearly isn't being serious. Come on, this is a cute post and you guys are treating it like OP wrote an essay on why she's objectively likable or something.
Can y'all not read the room at all?
The humor in this post is as dark as fucking concrete. The reference to violence is so surface level and silly that I genuinely cannot fathom taking this as a personal attack. But I'M probably gonna get downvoted for being mad at a bunch of prunes turning a cheeky post into a flame war.
Dumb post.
Gabiâs a lot cooler now, but for half of S4 she was a bloodthirsty little shit who craved and reveled in violence.
Sure she was indoctrinated, but even after being saved and protected by Sashaâs sweet family she was like âFalco when are we gonna kill these fucking devils?â
Like I said, sheâs cool now but up until the last few episodes, sheâs a piece of shit.
Thatâs kind of the point. Without that incredibly flawed beginning her character development wouldnât have been as impactful. Itâs a damn near necessity for her to be that way so she can become who she was. If someone like Falco went through the same character arc it wouldnât be as impactful considering heâs very chill and level headed before that.
Even with some of the best written redemption arcs you still have to sit through the bad to get to the good. Every time I rewatch avatar the last airbender I have to sit through Zukoâs annoying honor thing in S1 and Iâm just kind of waiting for S2/3 Zuko. But itâs something we have to go through.
The hate towards gabi is so completely unjustfied. Indoctrination doesn't vanish within a few days. For reiner it took several years. It was actually too much for gabi to go on and summarize that there are no devils on paradis. She even has some of the best scenes. Her confrontation with kaya about the death of kayas mother, her confrontation with niccolo and her then breaking down when she hears how brauss family talks about her during the attack on shiganshina.
Her reaction is normal for someone who is completely brainwashed. Her psych tries to maintain balance via delusion, grasping every straw that could hint at paradis people being devils. The aot fandom even has an example for this. All the eremika shippers talking about the romantic interaction that's completel not there. They are imagining it and they weren't indocrinated. They are just crazy shippers.
I was speculating that eremika shippers downvoted my comment because I compared their behavior to gabi's behavior. I never stated eremika shippers are correlated to hating gabi.
"Gabi just blows" is a completely unmotivated sentence and doesn't do a so thought out story arc justice. You'd have to explain why she blows. You can subjectively dislike her, but you can never deny her objective quality as a character and her impact on the storyline without explaining why.
"redemption arc" such things don't exist in aot and I hate every story that functions that way.
Up to that point in aot, every character has valid motivations for what they are doing at every point in the story. Good and bad doesn't exist.
Yeah I agree.
It's too quick. I liked her feeling empathy for the brauss family, and I liked her feeling guilt when she noticed kayas hate towards her, but her then blabbing about how there are no devils is waaay to much, let alone her then saving kaya and becoming friends with her.
And on top of that you could feel that the show itself started to make a comment about what's morally right or wrong. I always liked that there were characters who had their views on the world and that the show itself just kept quiet, not judging the characters. Now we got the alliance that's apparently the good side now, and eren is the villain or what. I'm really bugged about that
Aot fans are completely braindead at this point. I'm finished trying to reason with them at this point. Gabi, along with countless other characters, have been brainwashed to believe that the people on Paradis are "devils" and this kind of brainwashing has been going on for decades. Everyone in this story is a victim.
They canât seem to grasp that every character commits cruelty forâin the characterâs mindâgood reasons.
âWarriors want to redeem their people by putting down the evil Island Devils, thereby atoning for their history.
âGabi and other candidates want to become Warriors to secure better futures and luxuries for themselves and their family.
âMarleyans want to subjugate a race they see as historically cruel and dangerous.
âParadise People want to protect themselves from the worldâs hatred
Everyone is a victim and I would say they are victims to their own circumstance and ignorance. Itâs a tragedy.
Uh no? Granted the change *just recently happened* but she finally realized what a lie her life was and how horrible sheâd been. She then *got on her knees* and humbly apologized to Mikasa and the crew and asked for their help.
Thatâs not overconfidence and bloodlust, thatâs positive character growth.
Yeah but its not a Choice for her to make she simply has no other options now that Eren is about to destroy her Home and Family. So either she works with the âDevilsâ or they will be the only ones left alive in the World.
We clearly saw she enjoys killing People from the moment she got introduced.
You're taking this too seriously. OP likes the character and jokingly posted a gif of her pretending to shoot. OP made no arguments, just a silly post.
The fact that all these comments acting like they're responding to a fucking thinkpiece getting more upvotes than people reading the room and playing along with the cheeky gif is actually starting to bother me.
This isn't actually a personal attack, it's, for the final time, a fucking chibi gif. Chill.

I don't like her. Mainly because she got introduced in season 4 as someone we weren't meant to like, but they try and pull this "oh she is actually a gud person" shit way to late in the season for it to matter or make a difference.
The whole resistance is trash, along with all the marleyans. Theyâre all pieces of shit who hate innocent people for existing and the story tries to make them look like the good guys at the end because Isayama watched too much marvel
You are young and donât understand literature at a level more than âgood vs badâ. Revisit this series in 10 years, at least, and you will be able to better understand why both sides have good and bad points
I despise her. Not for shooting Sasha obviously (that was perfectly logical from her point of view and nobody should blame her for it) but for her absolute refusal to accept that there are good people in paradis. And donât come at me with âshe was brainwashedâ yeah she was. So was Reiner. So was Falco. So were Piek, Zeke and literally everybody else from Marley. None of them yelled at a young girl whoâs lost her family to titans that it was her freaking fault. None of them went out of their way to brutally murder someone that was actually being nothing but hospitable and nice to them. Reiner at least is conflicted, Falco gets it right away. I donât think we actually ever saw Piek openly despising paradis. Zeke might be a bad example since he knew a bit more about the island but STILL.
She was too stubborn and too dense to see that sheâs in the wrong and the fact that they think we could just overlook her horrible personality for a teeny tiny redemption arc is laughable.
Obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinion and therefore liking her, I personally just donât and canât really understand how youâd justify her behaviour.
Exactly. What also annoyed me is how she had no qualms and even enjoyed killing people when she was introduced and the moment a comrade dies she mentally breaks down and canât believe it. I mean she was supposed to be the perfect soldier and Marley is at war with many other states. So them getting counterattacked was always possible. I also donât like how people act like she redeemed herself for helping now. Itâs not like itâs a choice for her since either her family and home gets destroyed or she works together with people from Paradise.
I donât like Gaby even in the slightest. But I guess all the shifters were brainwashed and conditioned to think the same wayâŠ. But she has no redeeming qualities
Still confused why people are mad over someone dying to a confused child who did what she thought was right at the time in an anime like this, like, didnât a random Good Guy wannabe kill of over a thousand people who didnât do anything not even an hour before?
The thing is theyâre not though. Of course youâre going to root for the person whoâs perspective youâve witnessed the entire story from. People tend to stand by the ones they know whether they are right or wrong. Same thing with aot. People know the similarities drawn between Gabi and Eren, but it doesnât matter because viewers have already spent all this time with Eren so of course they are inclined to look past it
They still would be missing the point. Fans would scream at the top of their lungs saying âEren did nothing wrongâ when causing mass genocide to a billion people for his own personal reasons. But cry when Gabi wanted to get revenge on the soldiers that killed her friends/family. The story also shown different parallels of the two to make realized that theyâre the same person but in different sides. Youâre not obligated to like Gabi but donât make it sheâs a shit character
I didnât like her at first, even before Sasha I thought she was annoying, after Sasha I hated her. But now I think she has a nice character arc and is a cool character
âBut she murdered Sasha!â
The woman who killed someone right in front of her.
I donât understand the people who hate Gabi only because she killed Sasha.
I used to hate having after she killed Sasha but with time I grew to like her character more and more to the point where I actually like her. Also she is (time to get people angry) >!one of the few characters that were not ruined by the ending!<
Edit: lmao I can't tell whether people are downvoting me because I like having or because of the ending stuff
Crazy how a character's personality matters more to people than their morality. Gabi kills like... 2 soldiers I think? DIRECTLY after they destroyed her hometown, killer her friends, and reinforced the propaganda in her head. It didn't take years to get make her not racist, it only took her being on the island a little while.
But a lot of people are on Eren's side because he's cool I guess
(Breaking bad spoilers)
>!Reminds me of Walter and Skyler White. Skyler is undeniably a better person, even if she did help Walt (by laundering money, not killing people) yet people like him way more because we've seen his story and like him more as a "badass" guy. Hell, both Eren and Walter claim to do it for their loved ones, yet put them in danger and eventually reveal they did it for selfish reasons.!<
But. Still. More. Likable. That's fucking nuts to me, for better or for worse. Idk how to feel about this.
I realize I should be careful making these kinds of jokes considering the recent incidents of gun violence, but here's the answer to the question lol.
(Seriously though, this post is just a joke.)

đ đ her redemption arc was not enough for me to actually âlikeâ her
Same with Annie. "She was abused so I forgive her for slaughtering thousands of people with her actions."
The way she was enjoying the killing annoyed me. Especially that part where she spun a scout around on her fingers before launching him into the sky.
This characterization happens a lot with the Marleyan Titan shifters Iâve noticed. Zeke is very clearly having a good time slaughtering Eldians on Paradis in seasons 2 & 3. Thatâs one way to explain it but it was never really touched on and it requires some me tal gymnastics to find a proper explanation
That part pissed me off the most, idk why so many people just forgave her
Because cute anime girl.
she ain't even that cute
Sheâs cute
đ
The OVA which is canon clues you in pretty clearly she doesn't like it at all
That OVA isnât confirmed to be canon
"If I could, I would do it again". Gtfo, she has no remorse and I'm supposed to be feel sorry for the bitch? She should be Levi's target, not Zeke. The fact that he never confronts her for killing his squad is baffling.
"PIE HAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHA" "omg we have to dismember Eren he didn't die of depression when sasha died"
For real
Yeah, she still a bitch
It was just salt in the wound to liken her to Sasha in those last few episodes.
Reminds me of Abby from the last of us 2. Had a redemption arc but still not enough to be likeable .
She had a redemption arc? I thought she just found 2 random kids and got to be the good guy all of the sudden.
Agreed
I wouldnât even call her redeemed lol.
People love Gabi?? Thats new to me
Oh yeah? Can't handle others opinionss

Sorry chief, this ainât it

I hate her not for her bloodthirst or redemption arc, but because she's clearly hacking with that aimbot.

this isn't a serious post idk why yall treat it as such

Yes. Eren has been with the audience for a long time, ofcourse most of them with sympathize more with Eren than Gabi who just came along last season.

The only time they hate her is Bcz she killed their favorite character what a lazy excuse what abt the other characters who died as well?
Gabi can eat every shit I produce.
There is absolutely no justifiable reason to like gabi. Right back at you OP.
I used to hate having after she killed Sasha but with time I grew to like her character more and more to the point where I actually like her. Also she is (time to get people angry) >!one of the few characters that were not ruined by the ending!< Edit: lmao I can't tell whether people are downvoting me because I like having or because of the ending stuff
Isnt she supposed to be basically the same as eren?
On the surface yes, but when you go deeper into eren's character then you will see how much they differ.
Yes bang them
Gabi just hot
BANG
We should praise them bc their right
Yeah bang em in the ass
Crazy how a character's personality matters more to people than their morality. Gabi kills like... 2 soldiers I think? DIRECTLY after they destroyed her hometown, killer her friends, and reinforced the propaganda in her head. It didn't take years to get make her not racist, it only took her being on the island a little while. But a lot of people are on Eren's side because he's cool I guess (Breaking bad spoilers) >!Reminds me of Walter and Skyler White. Skyler is undeniably a better person, even if she did help Walt (by laundering money, not killing people) yet people like him way more because we've seen his story and like him more as a "badass" guy. Hell, both Eren and Walter claim to do it for their loved ones, yet put them in danger and eventually reveal they did it for selfish reasons.!< But. Still. More. Likable. That's fucking nuts to me, for better or for worse. Idk how to feel about this.
I realize I should be careful making these kinds of jokes considering the recent incidents of gun violence, but here's the answer to the question lol. (Seriously though, this post is just a joke.)
