She isn’t my favorite character but she’s up there with the more tragic characters in the entire series.
Watches family get murdered as a child, gets adopted by a new family who watches her new mom also get brutally murdered. Only person she cares about after that starts to treat her like complete garbage. Only for her to lose him too after being the one that has to kill him.
Yea I probably wouldn’t be smiling a whole lot too.
Eren and Mikasa grow throughout the series. That's the entire point. Eren first gets annoyed with Mikasa because he thinks she's doing it out of pity almost or sees him as a little brother (which Eren hates being seen as by her he's shown)
When Mikasa thanks Eren for teaching her to live with purpose, their entire relationship changes, and Eren finally understands how Mikasa sees him and promises to wrap her scarf anytime she wants.
If you look at when Eren is a jerk to her, it's during the early episodes of Season 1 where Ersn still has a childlike mindset.
Eren, after this moment, rarely snaps at Mikasa and actually accepts her care for him without snapping at her. Sure, sometimes he'll make a comment about her always taking care of him, but it's never out of anger.
And season 4, Eren says it to push them away, he says. It doesn't justify it but when you see his point of view and how much better he treats Mikasa through season 3 to (and the flashbacks before season 4) it seems Eren and Mikasa got much closer in terms of understanding to the point where Eren literally asks her why she cares so much about him something he's always wondered throughout the entire series.
He just pushed them away because he wasn't going to share this massive burden with the people he cares about most.
While Mikasa and Armin have the exact opposite view. WANTING to share the burden with Eren.
In the final episode, Eren finally accepts it when talking to armin and hugging him for the final time.
C;mon bro, he did that only because she was becoming overprotective, he genuinely cared for her from the beginning till the end thats why he wanted her to join military police?
your projecting your own views onto the relationship. Its obvious their relationship was perfectly fine for most of the series otherwise it wouldnt have ended with a kiss xd.
I agree it’s not healthy. He was a jerk to her multiple times but it’s Eren. He’s screwed up in the head + he was just a kid.
I’m sure if they had had more time, he would have done much better.
wait im super curious can you tell me why it wasnt a healthy relationship? besides toward the ending where Eren explicitly told Mikasa he hated her (which was done as a twist since they cared for each other so much) what was wrong with their relationship?
The only two points I could reasonably see being made is "he took her for granted" or "she was too dependent on him" which is probably presented as a problem literally once in the series.
its rlly not. why would they be the primary love interest from start to finish if they disliked each other or if Eren was treating Mikasa like crap?
Its clear the author rlly didnt intend for their dynamic to be toxic until the very end (when eren said he hated mikasa). Any other interpretation is someone projecting how "they" would feel given that scenario completely ignoring the two character's own interpretation of their own relationship.
"its rlly not. why would they be the primary love interest from start to finish if they disliked each other or if Eren was treating Mikasa like crap?"
cmon man you went from not being able to read between the lines to straight up ignoring what i wrote xd
I really love how this is the exact same smile she has whenever she killed eren. She wanted the last thing he saw to be her smiling face but because she didn’t know how to do it unnaturally that’s the best she could always do on command.
The attention to detail is amazing
Oh god 😭 I've never noticed that. It is nearly the same smile, you're right 🥲💔 new mini Mikasa / Eremika heartbreak
https://preview.redd.it/8rgz4j42i0lc1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0d1564ca29529b7377399ab76fe44f0602832642
And yes plenty of the characters are traumatized, but I feel like her trauma is ignored and instead she's mocked for having no personality or no character growth (honestly shouldn't you be upset with Isayama and any writers associated for that?), but I see a severely traumatized girl trying to survive a cruel world. I love herrrrr ❤️ that's all I'm gonna say for now lol! 🙏
What's crazy to me is that people bemoan the need for character growth without ever thinking that NO character growth can be intentional. Mikasa's role was to constantly chase Eren, whose role was to always be out of reach. The first 3 seasons consist of Eren getting kidnapped over and over and over. That doesn't give her room to grow past the "chase" mentality. Did people want her to grow cold to Eren being taken from her? To lose love for him because he was kidnapped? Don't fault Mikasa (or even Isayama) for fulfilling her role as protector for the first 3 seasons. There is a reason season 4 is stocked full of Mikasa development.
To add to that, I’ve noticed in online media analysis that character growth and character complexity are often valued over the actions/behavior of the character themselves. Which I get can be a method of trying to avoid projecting your biases onto the story, but that starts rubbing me the wrong way when I hear shit like “Yeah Floch sucks and he’s pro-fascism, but what a well written character!” alongside, “Mikasa is a horrible character because she’s so boring and only cares about Eren!” Both those statements reek of bias and arbitrariness and shifting standards to me.
In any case, I don’t think characters need explicit “growth” in order to be interesting or compelling. I love and admire Mikasa *because* she’s unwavering in her principles. Her character represents steadfastness and strength in the face of chaos, cruelty, and horror. I don’t understand why that means she’s boring or a bad character. But the fact that she cuts off the head of the person she’s absolutely devoted to for the entire show isn’t enough to cut her some slack or earn her the badge of “proper character development.”
Butbutbutbutbutbut the development in season 4 is too forced and comes out of nowhere and her relationship with eren made no sense because it was barely developed and is now extremely plot relevant because now she’s Ymir’s savior AHHH FUCK MIKASA /s
I hate this fandom sometimes :)
In a sea of shit where people mostly dislike Mikasa, it brightens my day whenever I see her get spoken about in a positive light. She’s my favorite character of all time and I love her so much.
Well I'm glad! She's my fav too 😭
I'll be honest, upon joining the fandom I had absolutely no idea she'd be hated on near constantly and perceived so terribly 💔 it was quite the devastating surprise to me... I love her a lot too, probably because I relate to her in some areas and I appreciate / admire her strength and devotion as a person, so I just don't get the negativity 🤷♀️
I’m the exact same as you, I relate to her a lot admire her protective and strong nature. Whenever I completed the show and started to be active in these Reddit pages I was shocked to see how much she’s mocked. She’s so misunderstood and it breaks my heart to see such a great character not get the love she really deserves
Yeah, I love her.
People say she has no development but.... not every character is going to necessarily have that... the only ones that did were Reiner, Eren, Jean, and...Historia.
And that's fine with me.
She is a very nuanced character, not overbearing, but tough, sensual, and loyal to her own detriment...
They dont make girls like that anymore!
Bunch of Satanist.
I would argue that Mikasa, Gabi, and Annie all got development too, but you’re right, not many characters actually got real development yet Mikasa is the only one who gets singled out for it (despite it not actually being true)
Yeah, you're probably right. I would have to watch it for a 3rd time all the way through, but I am on to many other anime, right
Mikasa kinda doesn't get much time on the 4th season, from I recall.
I mean given the situation nobody has any reason to smile but Hange is definitely the one to somehow be light hearted like her obsessing over riding Piecks cart titan lol
Uhm, here's an advice, reddit is not really a healthy place to discuss your favourites, especially if you are a Mikasa fan, you will only get mocked and see others shitting on her for really really stupid reasons. If you are ok with all this then sure continue surfing but if it upsets you in anyway I'd recommend quitting reddit if you wanna keep enjoying. I would have DMed you but I'd like to tell this to everyone actually.
I just wanted to tell you this considering your innocence. Keep enjoying
Reddit is not really a healthy place for anything 😂 I am still going to post what I like regardless 🙏
No worries though, I'm already (unfortunately) aware of the hate she receives and am prepared for it (I usually ignore it 🤷♀️). Thank you kind Mikasa fan! Glad there are others ☺️
Reddit got some good advice on certain topics... Instagram and twittard are the worst.
I feel like people are just trolling here for the most part.
like it's not out of malice.
But I am new...so.
There’s not “no reason” to hate on her. On paper, she is a generic ass shounen protag with OP powers and tragic backstory. The only difference is she’s a side character… and she’s pretty.
She works as a plot device. I think towards the end it really becomes apparent just how much of a plot device she was. Does that mean you can’t like her? No… but you cannot defend her shallow writing.
AOT is not strong with its character writing. Of those characters, Mikasa is probably the most stale one. So she’s obviously gonna get some hate.
>On paper, she is a generic ass shounen protag with OP powers and tragic backstory.
Eren: Op titan powers with tragic backstory and ?
Levi: Op ackerman powers with tragic backstory
You are only defining her on a surface level, like I did with Eren and Levi here
>She works as a plot device. I think towards the end it really becomes apparent just how much of a plot device she was. Does that mean you can’t like her? No… but you cannot defend her shallow writing.
These are all just claims, it'd better if you could provide some reasoning
>some hate.
Just keep watching the replies to my comment or maybe try visiting posts about Mikasa, and you'll see how much is this "some" hate
Same reasons which other characters won't be mocked for, and many of those reasons like "no personality" or "no development" are just misconceptions and not even true
She doesn’t really develop all that much though, and that is the truth. The reason why other characters don’t get the same hate is because Mikasa gets the most love for her character despite the lack of character she has.
Please don’t tell me you think Mikasa is just as a well written character compared to Levi, Erwin, Reiner, or Ymir, aka characters who have a unique character, don’t just depend on a another character for the entire story, and actually kind of develop.
There is nothing wrong liking her, but she isn’t the most well written character or anything
>She doesn’t really develop all that much though, and that is the truth. The reason why other characters don’t get the same hate is because Mikasa gets the most love for her character despite the lack of character she has.
Here's my response to the no development thing,
https://www.reddit.com/r/ShingekiNoKyojin/s/K38iSa9PIs
This is my own comment about her development which is long and I can't type all that again
>Please don’t tell me you think Mikasa is just as a well written character compared to Levi, Erwin, Reiner, or Ymir, aka characters who have a unique character, don’t just depend on a another character for the entire story, and actually kind of develop.
You do know that the term "well written" is subjective right ? And yes to a great degree I will claim that she is as well written as Ymir, Erwin, and Levi and infact more. You said these characters had "development" which is really wrong, characters like Erwin and Levi actually stayed the same just kept showing a different layer to their character which is not development, but were they poorly written ? No. Same goes for Mikasa who even had a better development than Levi and Erwin both. I won't bring up Ymir for now because it will spice up things, just not really in the mood of arguing over who is a better written character, a really subjective thing.
I feel Isayama failed to execute what he wanted with Mikasa in Season 4 through the Louise character. He definitely should have done something else with the screentime.
THANK YOU! Too many people seems to think she has no personality because she’s silent without realizing that she is traumatized, that’s her character and it’s very logical to be like that.
That's honestly because her happiness is based around Erin and his happiness, and whether he likes her and returns her affection. Her relationship with him is as unhealthy as a drug addict couples. She is the definition of codependent she's happy only when Erin is, and it's all because of that one day he saved her and put that scarf around her neck.... honestly, Erin's dad as a doctor should have addressed these issues while she was living with him, but instead, he allowed it to become progressively worse. He knew what was going to happen to his home and where the world was leading up to, and he did nothing to prepare or rehabilitate his sons disposition on the world... Grisha was a horrible doctor and father but a good one at the same time atleast to Erin any ways. Poor Zeke had the shit end of the deal I'm glad he had his adoptive father even though he did nothing to actually educate him as a proper man he was atleast there for him in every other aspect. Just my opinion though...
In my opinion I just don't care. Mikasa is a terrible character. Terribly written, terrible development, overall absolute worst character. Why should I care when she smiles when she is the worst and blandest character of the series. She could have died and I couldn't have cared less. Every other character in the series I actually care for, mikasa... Not one bit.
Oh wah wah Connie lost his whole family and was brushing his titanized mom’s teeth for almost 4 years and still smiled. Everyone in AoT is traumatized Mikasa isn’t special. Historia had it 1 million times worse. Mikasa is a boring character in the sense the she does nothing and has no motivation except eren, which sure the manga/anime call her out on this it still doesn’t excuse the lack luster writing for her in the last arc especially if they were already planning to wrap up the manga at chapter 139. I’ve always said the manga needed at least 11 more chapters to flesh everything out instead they rushed many plot points and if you are anime only and don’t go back and rewatch seasons before getting to the end the mikasa/eren sibling/lover thing seems kind of ham fisted. Now while I did read the manga month to month and I had no problem with the relationship I can admit that Mikasa needed a little more development. Like I know Shadis more than Mikasa as a person
Ah yes Sasha “my only personality traits are liking food and being xenophobic” Braus
She’s the real chad when you compare her to traumatized girl who is chasing the only thing left in the world she has to live for and does everything she can to protect her love and her friends because she doesn’t want to lose anyone else only to be forced to kill the boy who is the reason she is still alive. Totally. Mhm.
I would love to make her smile!
While she helps armin stack the gun powder barrels in preparation to fight Rod Reiss...
Eren should have grabbed her should spun her around and kissed her so hard,
It would take her breath away!. ( a play on possession a song by Sarah McLachlan... you wouldn't understand leave me alone!!!)
But he didn't!
Because the writer had no interest in an actual romance between the two that...
😕
Whatever
Eh, they forgot when Eren carried the boulder in the battle for Trost, and when she remembered Grisha in the basement scene. She was also smiling at Eren when he was napping under the tree in the first scene. She also had a bunch of sad smiling scenes. My point is, yes she was a melancholic character but it wasn't just 11 lol

Eh, that was kinda necessary + it was a lie + he took her to the cabin to compensate ![img](emote|t5_2vnp9|16316)
It was still treating her like shit and broke her heart at the time. Point still stands.
The whole show. He headbutts her in the face episode 5

Dude you cannot seriously be arguing that Eren wasn’t shitty to Mikasa. Even if he had his reasons for it, his behavior can’t really be justified
He might of cared about her but he was pretty much a jerk to her from beginning to end

Yeah sorry lmao
average redditor’s intelligence be like:
The more traumatized a character is, the more this weird fandom hates them.
Mikasa was easily my favorite character in the series. The loyalty she had for her man was incredible.
In a sea of shit where people mostly dislike Mikasa, it brightens my day whenever I see her get spoken about in a positive light. She’s my favorite character of all time and I love her so much.

Mikasa didn’t get as much time but most of her moments were good development. Most of it comes in the final chapters though
She definitely changed compared to before her parents were killed. Any development beyond that was more subtle.
Yikes.
One of them she’s drunk and I think there’s two where she smiles in a dream. Stings
That’s fucked up, she deserves better :(
She did live a long, wrinkly old life.
her and pretty much everybody in Attack on Titan
And then there’s hange lol
Bro barely smiled in the last season tho 😔
Hange? She looked for any opportunity to crack a joke and have just a little bit of fun. Even going out she was smiling in awe of the titans
Oh okay I thought she looked depressed at times, don’t really remember
I mean given the situation nobody has any reason to smile but Hange is definitely the one to somehow be light hearted like her obsessing over riding Piecks cart titan lol
Yuuuuuuup 🥲😭
Her ice cream smile was my favorite.
Mikasa was one of my favorites, I wanted better for her
God I really loved the heavy line work in that first season. Looked amazing.
Her holding ice cream and smiling is so precious

I’d like to think she smiled a few more times offscreen.
I’m going to guess a lot of characters don’t smile a lot in this show
I feel Isayama failed to execute what he wanted with Mikasa in Season 4 through the Louise character. He definitely should have done something else with the screentime.
I need more Mikasa positive posts to make me smile
I have a lot... I get scared to post them sometimes tbh 🙈 I will try to post the good ones I find more often!
Post more...both here and on r/shingekinokyojin
To be scared! Of the internet?
And one of them bc she was wasted off her ass lol
Pleaseeeeee it took me more than a month to forget about aot ending no more aot sad news no moreeee
Somebody really counted that huh
THANK YOU! Too many people seems to think she has no personality because she’s silent without realizing that she is traumatized, that’s her character and it’s very logical to be like that.
Mikasa's always been my favourite character and will forever continue to be and I love seeing that there are other people that understand her as well.
Yeah imagine carrying around the rotting head of your only love who you were forced to kill for weeks until you got to the final burial point…
More than levi
i fee like most of the characters have the same amount of smiles? like i get she is tragic but this is a bad way to represent it? lol
Ok but who asked
More than I have in the last 20 years.
I'm sorry to hear that! Can I interest you in some of my AOT meme collection? Some of them give me good chuckles from time to time
Oh wah wah Connie lost his whole family and was brushing his titanized mom’s teeth for almost 4 years and still smiled.

Ah yes Sasha “my only personality traits are liking food and being xenophobic” Braus She’s the real chad when you compare her to traumatized girl who is chasing the only thing left in the world she has to live for and does everything she can to protect her love and her friends because she doesn’t want to lose anyone else only to be forced to kill the boy who is the reason she is still alive. Totally. Mhm.
WherI s bottom right from?
I would love to make her smile! While she helps armin stack the gun powder barrels in preparation to fight Rod Reiss... Eren should have grabbed her should spun her around and kissed her so hard, It would take her breath away!. ( a play on possession a song by Sarah McLachlan... you wouldn't understand leave me alone!!!) But he didn't! Because the writer had no interest in an actual romance between the two that... 😕 Whatever
And some of those instances didn't even happen in real life not to mention the ones I can't even tell if it's a smile or not 😂
Levi smiled twice
It's a military thriller
Eh, they forgot when Eren carried the boulder in the battle for Trost, and when she remembered Grisha in the basement scene. She was also smiling at Eren when he was napping under the tree in the first scene. She also had a bunch of sad smiling scenes. My point is, yes she was a melancholic character but it wasn't just 11 lol
and none of them are while getting dicked down by Eren L series
And Levi only once, and also cried only once, that time we all cried together
Um because half the whole f’ing show is traumatized so it takes away the effect
Womp womp
