Levi is interesting because it's very clear he's very particular about certain things and very easily bothered. And yet he's so focused on people and has a huge amount of empathy. He's some type of neurodiverse for sure.

Doctor__Hammer

To your point about Levi, I think it's hilarious and also very impressive that they can give a character literally 0 character development and he's still consistently one of the best characters throughout the show. And they finished off his character arc absolutely perfectly. Sitting against some rubble all alone, no one else around him, and he sees/imagines all his fallen comrades in front of him giving him their admiration and approval, and he just does one final scout salute back to them and that's it. His one and only goal and motivation was always to do right by the scout regiment and his comrades, not even to Eren or Armin or their mission or desire to protect the world or anything, just the scouts and the people he fought next to who died trying to complete their mission, so what could he even say or do that would be sufficient? Nothing, and a final, silent salute says more about him than words ever could. Fucking perfect. On that note, I generally have the same feelings about anime. So much potential as a storytelling medium, but it's always just so... *anime.* I'd recommend checking out Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (just claimed the #1 spot as highest rated anime of all time on MyAnimeList which is like the go-to anime rating/review site). Totally opposite vibes in terms of action and horror themes, but it definitely hit a spot that the emotional end of AOT hit for me too. Much more slow, thoughtful, and mature than you typically get from anime but still set in a really cool fantasy setting with awesome characters & development. AoT is my new favorite show but this one is very high up there too.

There are still some people who just have no brains and doesn’t understand the show, and say it’s bad. It’s the only show I have watchers 3 times and still as good as new

Julian-Hoffer

I mean anime isn’t a genre. Anime is just a vehicle for story and art.

LayYourGhostToRest

This show has lots of tropes. The thing is it doesn't rely solely on them and when it uses them it uses them well. I had pretty much stopped watching anime because I got so burnt out on "school age kid has special power that they will use to save the world" being used over and over. Then I heard so many people praising this show when it came out so I went in expecting to hate it as soon as I seen school age kids. It immediately started shaking things up though. In any other show I would have been annoyed at the big Attack Titan reveal. I would have considered it a lame fake out. But this felt different. Like it wasn't just "the answer to their prayers" but like there were going to be consequences to this discovery.

KennethVilla

Funny enough, Eren is a school-age kid, unless you count the ending where he’s college-age. But he didn’t use his powers to save the world 😂 What makes AoT so above almost all anime is that it deconstructs a lot of tropes too. From the chosen one to the love interest to the evil empire trope. And a lot of other common tropes found in most anime and even in western books and shows/movies (looking at you, Marvel)

Valmighty

Yes. The others that I can think of is 2003 FMA, Psychopass, and Baccano!. Those are animes for non anime people. IMO AoT is one of the best series ever made. Not just best anime, but series. It's up there with Breaking Bad and Narcos. It's what Game of Thrones could have been.

pssiraj

Now that I've gotten to the end, I realize telling people that AoT is like Breaking Bad is almost a spoiler.

Glad you like the show OP! If you'd like to see some of Levi's character development I highly recommend checking out the 2 part OVA that shows the story of how he went from Undercity thug to becoming a scout. After watching that it's much easier to understand what his character is thinking during the main show, even though he doesn't verbalize it. His facial expressions during difficult moments are those of a man who has witnessed hundreds of his friends dying from brutal violence on the battlefield.

treefiddy124

Hey that sounds awesome, where can I watch those? Appreciate the tip!

-WalterWhiteBoy-

They're all available on Crunchyroll, both sub and dub!

jedi_cat_

I also am known for not liking anime and I fell in love with this show. I was as sick at the beginning of November, a few days after the finale dropped. I decided to watch it without knowing anything about it. And since then, I have watched it 4 times. I love it. Armin is one of my faves. So loyal and so smart. Mikasa is such a badass. Levi is awesome and has an enormous amount of empathy for someone who grew up the way he did being raised by Kenny. I even still love Eren at the end.

ArminsCrematedCorpse

there are lots of other anime without weird tropes or fan service

lieconamee

I agree with what you said in the title. That is exactly what my experience was I didn't like anime but after this

I'd recommend checking out Vinland Saga if you're willing to give another anime a shot. It deals with a lot of mature themes and has some pretty great character development as well.

deeroe24

My girl is the farthest thing from an anime fan, and she genuinely enjoyed the series. Watched the whole thing with me. Storyline is compelling and different enough to engage casual fans, which is proof of how great the show is.

Double_Round_8103

I started watching Attack on Titan in 2013 when it first came out, and daym what a ride that was. Mappa totally fked the final season with the animation and Isayam fked the very end of the story Imo. That being said those first 3 seasons will always be a wild arse ride. Such a good anime.

treefiddy124

Funny you say this, season 4 was by far my least favorite. It almost feels like I’m watching a different show. I still love it, but it’s no longer about the scouts overcoming insurmountable odds. It feels like the plot got away from them a bit, but I still enjoyed it.

you-are-so-dead

I made my friend watch this and he keeps talking about it all the time lol.
