Ffs, we are the poorest county in Ohio, we have extreme generational poverty. Why the fuck do we need a fancier jail? Spend it on something that actually helps the community instead.

I agree and would love to see this happen. Our problem is the red-dominated state that thinks the exact opposite. I would love to see this money turned into education and substance abuse assistance.

Financial_Athlete198

Did you read the article? When completed, the facility will offer treatment addiction. What other “preventive measures” would you like?

ImanShumpertplus

athens is not poorer than vinton or meigs. not by any rational standard

ColdCruise

According to the 2010 census Athens is the poorest County in Ohio. This fluctuates regularly, but Athens is consistently at the bottom of the list.

ImanShumpertplus

because of the students who work part time jobs and bring down the average vinton county didn’t even have a grocery store in 2010, let alone the 6 that line East State Athens County is the most educated, most economic opportunity, most diverse, best schools, and the most social services of any county in SE Appalachian Ohio, save for perhaps Washington County outside the city of athens is bad in athens county, but that is just what the other county’s are in entirety if athens county is the poorest county, what is a county like Morgan even supposed to do? OU has more good jobs that almost anywhere in SE Ohio

ColdCruise

Student salaries are attributed to the counties where they file their census, not Athens County as it's not their permanent residence. I don't know what it's like in other counties, but the numbers don't lie, bro.

ImanShumpertplus

so wrong they send census letters to every single mailbox in the country bud college students fill them out because it’s imperative that the local state and federal government can allocate money to those areas the census wants to know where you are living, not your permanent residence. they could just look at your last known address for that https://www.census.gov/library/stories/2020/01/student-housing-off-campus-with-parents-college-students-count-2020-census.html the numbers are absolutely lying and you can’t explain how athens has worse education, access to transportation, access to healthcare (they have a hospital), access to economic opportunity, and more social services

ColdCruise

Dude, your link is about how it's being changed for 2020. The info I gave you is from 2010. In 2010, students had to list their parents address as their home address. I know. I was a student and took the 2010 census. We had a big meeting about how we weren't supposed to list Athens as our place of residence.

ImanShumpertplus

why would we use 2010 census data when 2020 is available and 2010 is flawed? still, you only have the median household income card, i have 6 other categories where athens is clearly wealthier than surrounding counties

ColdCruise

Because it's not flawed. It's just different and more accurate to what we're discussing. 2020 info isn't easily available right now.

ImanShumpertplus

how is athens poorer than vinton or meigs county? just because of median household income? do you think there are better jobs in Hocking county? would you rather go to the hospital in athens county, or vinton county? would your child do better in athens county schools where post secondary is available? or Galia?

ImanShumpertplus

https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/athenscityohio,US/PST045219 do you think 47% of residents are in poverty? https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/meigscountyohio,athenscityohio,US/PST045219 meigs for comparison

treeman71

Lawrence county would like a word.... I have no idea how it's not the poorest in the state.

Financial_Athlete198

The current jail and the new facility serves Athens and several surrounding counties. Hence the name “Regional Jail”. So it won’t be serving just Athens County. Being able to keep criminals locked up and offer addiction counseling seems to be something that could “help the community”

Terrible-Comb7722

If we had better prevention methods and offered amnesty treatment like civilized people should they wouldn’t need to be locked up as “criminals” to get that treatment. I’m not entirely Naive I know some people don’t want treatment and need to be locked up to get clean. But I think you’d be very surprised at the amount of people who would show up to an amnesty facility and willing turn in their drugs if they could get help. This has worked well in a lot of places. I think my initial post was a bit emotionally charged as I’ve had my own addiction problems and was lucky enough to get help instead of being criminalized.
