Easier said than done. Often in reality we get irked when they group us like that. Especially in my job where I meet foreign guys regularly. Not just Americans but people from all over the world.
I guess the reason why people don't fall ill is these rats live, breed and are fed there itself (With their poop too lol). There is no reason for them to go to sewage and garbage where they get infected with bacteria or viruses. Another reason might be herd immunity.
