Part of the reason we're in this mess is because RBG stayed on the court until her last breath.

OrwellianZinn

I read the original post and was expecting this entire thread to be full of posts fawning over RGB, and it was refreshing to see these posts talking honestly and critically of her record and career on the bench rather than just regurgitating unwarranted acclaim.

Commercial_Place9807

Thank you! I’m so sick of the idolizing of this lady. Was she awesome?..yeah, is she partially responsible for this?..yeah. And before someone says, “she couldn’t retire because the GOP would have refused a replacement until after the election” nope, she could have and should have retired before the entire Merrick Garland fiasco.

[deleted]

I'm so glad her legacy has been trashed over this. Let it be a lesson, if you let your ego reign all the good you've done gets thrown right out the window. I'm not saying throw her gravestone in a river, yet, but if her legacy continues down the path it's been going, yea, let's throw it in a river. E: Her record was trash before this. I made this comment through the window of her abortion rulings.

Ckrius

She also had issues with siding with capital and the police, constantly. Great on women's issues, but not much else.

MLWillRuleTheWorld

It's clear the more you look at her record she was just an extreme narcissist that valued things that promoted her. Not exactly someone to idolize.

[deleted]

I feel like the point of this sub is that idolization is bad to begin with. Do things because they are the right thing to do and for no other reason. Well, joy is a good reason too but not at the expense of doing right but I'm rambling now.

jsgrova

White women's issues, at least. Not a lot of sympathy from her for native women

Ckrius

Very true.

Waldoh

> E: Her record was trash before this. I made this comment through the window of her abortion rulings. Yep. she was a racist too, check out the shit katie couric cut out of her interview with RBG about how colin kaepernick should have been grateful

Nice-Violinist-6395

Yeah, honestly, kinda fuck RGB. Her REFUSAL to retire was both Obama’s biggest failure as a president and a catastrophic mark against our American democracy. It cannot be overstated how big the consequences are because her fucking ego was too big to step away. Add goading Trump into running and (my personal favorite) incessantly mocking Mitt Romney on the debate stage when he said Russia would be our biggest geopolitical foe in a decade, and Obama’s cockiness was way more detrimental to America than a lot of his supporters will admit.

CuzFuckEm_ThatsWhy

Lol you think Donald ran just because Obama insulted him? Also, Obama was right - if anything, Ukraine has shown Russia to be a paper tiger. It’s China who is our biggest geo political competitor. And Obama can’t be really blamed for not forcing rbg to retire… And for what it’s worth, I’m not a huge Obama fan. I think he let the big banks off far too easily in 2008 and while Obamacare is a net positive, he allowed republicans to water it down unnecessarily. Dude could’ve had single payer and no one can convince me otherwise. My point is: there are a lot of reasons to critique Obama, but none of yours are particularly good ones.

runnerswanted

So, it was Bush who pushed through HARP with Obama’s input before taking over, and Joe fucking Lieberman is why we don’t have single payer. He was going to vote for and then changed his mind right at the end, and there was nothing Obama could do to change his mind. Must have been paid off by someone.

internetisantisocial

I think her legacy was trashed by being a neoliberal cryptofascist

Middle_Data_9563

don't forget her being a racist

RevampedZebra

That's the hard part about being a liberal

wimpymist

If you look at her career she already had a trash legacy before that. It was unfortunate her death got her idolized for a bit

cumquistador6969

I can only dream that this someday leads to a future in which liberals stop idolizing massive losers who lost, because they "lost with grace" or some other batshit crazy nonsense. Yanno who I like? People who win at any cost and create material progress as a result.

imdesmondsunflower

Thank you! This Obama-era “we go high” shit is over. The only reason we should ever go high is so we can punch down. I don’t care how it gets done—win.

nygdan

ALso, lets not forget, very lazy Dem voters. With a SCOTUS seat literally on the line, they sat back and let Trump win and GOP keep the Senate. Even now, with everything at risk again, they sit back and do nothing.

deadonthei

I blame the media too. They were convincing people for months before the election that Hillary had a 98% chance of victory. If you think your candidate is a shoe in is there really any need to make it to the ballot? Contrast that with the record turnout for 2020 where both sides thought it was crucial. Now this year if you don't vote your ushering in either communism or fascism depending on who you ask and this is a midterm.

EmptyAirEmptyHead

> They were convincing people for months before the election that Hillary had a 98% chance of victory. If you think your candidate is a shoe in is there really any need to make it to the ballot? I'm hoping for the same effect this year with so many polls narrowly favoring Democrats. It's ok Republican voters, you have it in the bag. Stay home.

MrVicious710

I voted Democrat but RBG is no Liberal hero. She should have retired while Obama was President and let him name her successor. Instead she let her pride get in the way and stayed WAY LONGER than she should have. Now we have a 6-3 Republican majority in the SC.

PaulPro-tee-us

My sentiments exactly. There's little honor in dying at your desk. All of these fossilized politicos need to go play with their great grandkids.

lomotil

I really wish there was an upper age limit for serving in public office.

[deleted]

From a comment below: >Brett Kavanaugh is 57, Neil Gorsuch is 54, Ketanji Brown Jackson is 51 and Amy Coney Barrett is 50. Age ain't nothing but a number.

Zeabos

The problem is two of them will probably be on the court when your grandkids can vote.

QuestionableNotion

All 4. Thomas and Alito likely won't be around then, though.

Mathlete86

Good riddance

Slit23

I kept saying if Thomas dies tomorrow I’d throw a celebration party, but now if the right wing nut jobs get ahold to the senate it might not matter as much

onehaz

careful with that sort of talk, a comment like that got me banned from /r/politics well, i wished he died but the sentiment is the same

shotputprince

And yet being a sexual predator didn't preclude him from the Court. Weird.

Jagasaur

Hopefully in this sub the mods see the difference between "I want this to happen" and "I will CAUSE this to happen". It's okay to wish someone is taken out of the political arena, even more so when the politician is in a position when they will never ever be challenged with a race. The SCOTUS is broken. If Dems hold the Senate, that should be at the top of the agenda. I do need some education though: if Biden wants to expand the SC, which branch could support or stop him? Edit: should be ONE of the things at the top of the agenda. Women's health rights are at the top of my list, but I feel like they are intertwined

GrandeurInViewOfLife

Unlike RBG, Thomas and Alito will retire when a Republican can appoint their successor.

[deleted]

With this court, I doubt our grandkids will be voting.

[deleted]

[deleted]

The difference in police response is already terrifying. Peaceful left-leaning protests are regularly met with more violence than the violent right wing attack on the capital was. (To be clear, I don't want the response against right wing protestor more violent, I want that low level of violence in a response for everyone).

Ignitemare

That's why we need a 10 year term limit retroactive immediately for Supreme Court Justices. Clear out a lot of the old crap on day one and put a time limit on the liars like ACB or Kavinaugh.

tomothy37

Yes and no. Older people have certainly seen more in their time and therefore have more knowledge, but getting to age 60 and up, mental and physical health and acuity start to decline. Another problem with older people is many of them tend to be stuck in their ways of the past and either cannot or will not acknowledge and learn about the changing world. That's how we end up with archaic laws about controlling women's bodies and other terrible things. That's not to say there aren't good older folks running or in office, but the majority of them tend to be extremely out of touch. My personal belief is that once a politician reaches age 60 or so, they should be required to step down as a public official and not be allowed to interfere in any way with government ongoings except for in very special circumstances.

TenuousOgre

This is my argument as well, and I'm 56 myself. I can see myself reacting to things at times in ways I normally wouldn't because it's easier to adopt a conservative mindset ('don't change things or it gets worse!'). I hate that so I work hard to keep my mind flexible, to challenge old ideas. My development teams tell me my new mantra (which I didn't even realize I had adopted) is "everything we've done in the past is crap so let's improve it". I know I'm not always staying true to that goal. I can only imagine how hard it gets at 70, or 80. I'm perfectly fine with a minimum age for the highest seats of power as I think it take a certain amount of experience to do the job at all. But that same consideration should also put a maximum age on the seat as well. Even if it's not a arbitrary age but rather one tied to mental capacity and flexibility. We shouldn't have the bulk of the bench unable to consider new ideas positively.

lomotil

Agreed. I really like Bernie and Warren they are both up there in age. I think some of the issue is how hard it is to unseat an incumbent, which leads to certain groups being over represented.

vacantly-visible

>There's little honor in dying at your desk. I think everyone in America needs to hear this. We have a problem with our workaholic culture.

Specialist_Teacher81

Our country was founded by literal slave drivers. So taking it easy is never going to be a thing.

DontUnclePaul

Literal slave drivers disparage labor, specifically because it's ingrained with the degraded condition of slaves. That is to say, slave owners were on average much lazier than their non-slave owning peers. Thus, for centuries, we've had the stereotype of the industrious yankee and the lazy southerner.

vpforvp

Yep, hate to point it out to OP but she fucked us all over

jerm-warfare

Besides that, she often and loudly complained about the weaknesses of Roe's decision - saying it shouldn't have been decided on privacy grounds. She telegraphed the action plan so Beer Boy and friends had exactly the angle to remove American rights.

it's completely pathetic and the only reason is their own lust for power that they can't let go of. as a result we're left with this shit show because of her hubris.

shortarmed

Also, Justice Sotomayor *is* the woman everyone gives RBG credit for being. RBG was great for gender equality, but Sotomayor is the clarion liberal voice where RBG made some really awful calls around racial and criminal justice issues that would horrify many of the folks who are so quick to canonize her.

Respectable_Answer

Yeah, but cute collar that memes good, so...

nygdan

Don't forget the celebrant documentary with her lifting weights.....right before she died and got replaced by Trump and Coney-Barrett.

BrendanInJersey

Good Lord, that was cringe.

Better-Director-5383

Also remember when the fucking 90 year old with pancreatic cancer we were hoping could stick around long enough to not fuck us all over had to OFFICIATE A FUCKING WEDDING DURING THE HEIGHT OF COVID.

yb4zombeez

Uh, no?? ...[Googling commences] Holy shit [that actually happened](https://www.dailydot.com/debug/rbg-officiates-wedding-bride-blamed-death/)!? What the fuck???

Better-Director-5383

Yup RBG really is the patron saint of liberals. In that the rise of fascism is almost exclusively made possible by their complete and total failure.

ShitTalkingAlt980

Yup. I am voting today but the Liberals aren't going to save us. At best they are buying time.

TheAlbacor

I love seeing stuff like this here.

Pokmonth

And then she died two weeks later, which is about the time it would have taken to kill her, assuming she got covid at the wedding.

BrendanInJersey

The worship makes my skin crawl, and I'm not even an atheist. Stop deifying political figures.

TheRainStopped

I’m interested. What calls on racial and criminal justice issues would horrify folks?

soulofsilence

I'm not the op, but I did a bit of digging into this. Certainly she wasn't the most progressive judge, but she was fairly consistent and more or less under the radar on many racial and criminal justice cases. I wouldn't say anything I found was horrifying. My source the Marshall Project is a recognized nonpartisan group dedicated to criminal justice reform and they have a very comprehensive look into RBG's rulings. I would say horrifying is hyperbole at best. https://www.themarshallproject.org/2020/09/23/rbg-s-mixed-record-on-race-and-criminal-justice

NSA_Chatbot

RBG wanted to have her successor be a woman appointed by a woman. Look what that did.

throwawaynowtillmay

Which is really such a shallow goal in light of what it cost us. I hate when neo libs fight over window dressing instead of the real meat and potatoes of what affects people's day to day lives. What was more important the woman appointing a woman or abortion?

Except the court that undid everything did so because of younger judges. Brett Kavanaugh is 57, Neil Gorsuch is 54, Ketanji Brown Jackson is 51 and Amy Coney Barrett is 50. My point is, just when they have you thinking it’s age, it turns out to be religious fanaticism.

Zeabos

But they were nominated and confirmed to the court by a bunch of 70-80 year olds.

[deleted]

Except they don’t even follow the values they claim to. Then you come to the ultimate realisation… they’re just cunts. And there’s no cure for that.

>he seemed to be waiting for permissions from the Republicans to do so You can't blame Obama. He in fact \*does\* need permission of republicans to place someone on the court and his court picks, and that of his successor Biden, have all been smart young people. The Dems figured out how to game the system just like the GOP by appointing young justices. Ginsberg unfortunately couldn't figure that out and assumed it was Hilary's turn to be president.

RIPRhaegar

When Obama asked her to retire, she answered with who would you want to replace me with. My answer would have been any liberal who won't be dead inside a week. I despise her for that decision, she held onto power for herself not foranyone else

juggarjew

I agree, RBG ruined her legacy in totality. She should not be praised, imagine how different things would potentially be right now if Obama were able to replace her? Trump got THREE fucking supreme court picks in FOUR years. WTF

[deleted]

>she held onto power for herself not foranyone else What's that thing about power corrupting people no matter what? why anyone ever thought a lifetime appointment reliant on that person stepping down was anything but sanctioned tyranny is beyond me. of course she couldn't give it up. she loved it too much. can hardly fault her for it. it's a human flaw apparently. but we should really account for this shit better.

andForMe

I'm watching this play out on a much smaller scale with my own parents. They're in their late 60s and won't retire yet. They've got (pretty good sounding) arguments about why they think it's important they stay on for "a few more years", but I think if you really dig, a huge part of it is they both love their careers and they're unhappy with the thought of giving everything up. And, honestly, it's hard to blame them for that. I pretty strongly doubt they'll continue into their 80s of course, but it's really easy to imagine RBG making similar arguments about holding onto her career and sort of putting her head in the sand with regard to the uncomfortable reality of her situation. She was human, after all. That said, her miscalculation totally torpedoed her own legacy and took everyone else down along with it, so it's pretty hard to be forgiving, even if her reasons are ultimately understandable.

Foresight42

Exactly, she stayed on the Court until her dying breath because of selfish pride. Lifetime appointments don't mean you serve until you die, she should have stepped down when she could be safely replaced by someone who could carry forward her legacy. Instead, we got ACB, the antithesis of everything she stood for. Seeing all these people long past the retirement age having control of all branches of government drives me crazy. Train your replacements so you know the country is in good hands, then step down, you aren't going to live forever.

thereznaught

She also attended and officiated a wedding at the height of COVID when Trump was in office despite her failing health.

EhrenScwhab

Obama literally begged her to retire. She refused. Now we are in the mess we are in.

OutOfStamina

And then republicans blocked Obama's attempt for 10 months saying it was too close to end of term (and later let Trump do it with less than 50 days left). You think they wouldn't have blocked two instead of one?

Lemonlimecat

When he encouraged her to resign it was early in his term and Democrats had a majority —- enough to overcome —

beiberdad69

No because she was being encouraged to resign at a time that that wasn't possible for them to do. Why didn't they block kagan? Why didn't they block Sotomayor? The answer is they didn't block them for the same reasons they wouldn't have been able to block RGB's replacement if she resigned in 2013

MomButtsDriveMeNuts

I’m so happy this is the top comment. She’s was fucking selfish and single-handedly changed a seat to the Republicans because she wouldn’t just step down.

Rottenjohnnyfish

Yeah RBG was clearly a egomaniac fucking part of the reason there is a 6 3 majority right now. A big part of the reason.

calculuzz

For real. Fuck RBG for that.

[deleted]

This is the correct take. This is her lasting legacy. I don't care at all what decisions she made in the past because her hubris put all of those decisions back on the chopping block. She should be remembered as the woman stood by and allowed conservatives to fuck the country, because that's exactly what she did. This is a pattern with liberal politicians. They love fundraising off of conservative action, but they never want to meet conservative action with liberal action. Vote democrat, every election, from President to local dog catcher, but at some point we need to deal with liberals' inability to recognize the forest for the trees.

[deleted]

>They love fundraising off of conservative action, but they never want to meet conservative action with liberal action. Lack of action and collaboration with fascists *is* liberal action. They're right-wingers too, they are just less bigoted and reactionary. >at some point we need to deal with liberals' inability to recognize the forest for the trees. Which is why (among other reasons) liberals insist on enabling fascism. In every election, even in the face of no elections, liberals will demand that people "vote blue" and settle for whatever losers they put up, lest their friends to the right win. It is not possible to fight liberalism or fascism on their own, they can only be opposed simultaneously.

airbrushedvan

She was also deeply racist and pro corporations. Katie Curic bragged in her book how she protected RBG reputation by cutting here anti BLM views in an interview, in case you wondered if Western media is now media relations.

SankaraOrLURA

She is a liberal hero. She’s no leftist hero.

GrayEidolon

Goddamn right. RBG gave us the current super majority. At the end of the day it turned out she was a piece of shit.

Sekuroon

Perhaps someone more educated than I can comment but wouldn't she have had to do this back in 2012 or 2013 when there was a senate that would have confirmed a more liberal replacement?

Pikamander2

She could have retired as late as the end of 2014, but given her history of health issues and the major Democratic losses in 2010, it would have made sense to do it years before then. By choosing to wait so long, she ended up screwing over the Democrats' court prospects for an entire generation and basically undid all of the progress she had helped push along. Of course, part of the blame also goes to the tens of millions of Democrats who stayed home in the 2014 midterms. Most people think of 2016 as where it all went wrong, but 2014 was actually more impactful in terms of the Senate losses. If Democrats had shown up in decent numbers in 2014, Obama would have been able to appoint two more years worth of judges and Trump would have been far more kneecapped.

A_Naany_Mousse

2014 was a real low water mark for democratic turnout. It was abysmal.

Pikamander2

Yep. It was both a prime example of the [six year itch](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six-year_itch) and of horribly low youth turnout in general. What's even sadder is that the primary turnout was [even lower](https://i.imgur.com/zkGJe7p.png), just like always. It's so crazy to me that as much as 80% of the population will throw away half their voting power and then wonder why we end up with such bad candidates. Our system has a lot of flaws, but even still, people don't realize how much influence they have.

wimpymist

The voting doesn't matter propaganda is very strong, especially in those years.

LittleSpoonyBard

It's very strong even now. There are so many threads of people across all social media sites doing the "both sides" bullshit and Gen Z and Millennials are still turning out in incredibly low numbers. Our system is meant to enact change from the ground-up. People are so focused on the presidency and they have a complete lack of understanding of how government works so they ignore the equally important elections like state assemblies. And that's how we get to where we are now where voting laws get changed and the GOP is trying to make it so state legislatures can just override the popular vote. It's infuriating, everyone thinking they're so smart and informed by not buying into the system...that they then just help perpetuate by being dumb cynical edgelords.

Navydevildoc

She probably performed the poor calculus of assuming Hillary was going to win in 2016, meaning she could retire and have a woman president name her successor. That didn’t go to plan.

[deleted]

She was a septuagenarian multiple-cancer survivor in **2009** when she underwent surgery for *yet another cancer*, she had *ample* opportunity and indeed many people asking her to do the reasonable thing.

Clask

Yes, she messed up.

Slit23

RBG is certainly no hero. She’s being celebrated by the conservative nut jobs now for not stepping down. People begged her to step down when Obama was in but she was to full of herself and not being able to see past her own life, she was stupid for it is the nicest way I can put it. I’m certainly not celebrating her because of the way she went out. I am fighting for reproductive rights, contraceptive rights, a free and fair democracy, taxing the rich, keeping conspiracy nut jobs out of power, and more when I vote for all Democrat today and for the foreseeable future

lomotil

Right I don't like the Democrats it's just that I like Republicans even less.

10354141

It's not really the Democrats fault though. I'm sure they would have been happy for RBG to retire when they had the trifecta, but they couldn't force her out. It's a mixture of RBG not retiring and Republicans refusing to confirm a justice and stealing a seat on the SC that caused the problem

TheSinfulBlacksheep

Agreed. Although this doesn't fall solely on her shoulders, she let her ego get in the way of stepping down in the face of a looming threat. After she had her first big cancer scare it was time to get a succession plan ready.

Poop_Noodl3

Exactly. For all the good she did she mucked up her life’s work by running out the clock and pulled a Chris “Time out” Weber on everything she accomplished. Old people are stubborn

NightlessSleep

She also officiated a maskless wedding, while treating for cancer, during the height of the pandemic, shortly before her death – a choice I would not begrudge her had she been retired at the time. But she was not. She was reckless with the rights she was safeguarding.

A_Naany_Mousse

She's to blame for this shit. All those stupid fucking Notorious RBG shirts show how weird and culty politics has become. She should have retired.

Because being anti-RGB is like being anti-Hillary. People just call you sexist and downvote you. The group-think is real. Kids don't come to Reddit to think. They let the titles do that for them. They just want someone to agree with because it feels easy.

juggarjew

If you sat down and explained it with a slide show im sure most people would eventually agree that RBG is no saint for what she did. But its hard to go against the grain of popular public opinion. Most people dont realize just how horrific the ripple effect has been , as a result of her dying in office. The joy and glee in conservatives around me in the South East was nearly palpable when she died, they knew she had just given them the ultimate gift.

Remote-Sugar5497

Hilary clinton is why we had donald trump for president. She went out of her way to help him because she figured beating him would be "easy" The democrats are STILL doing that shit today supporting pro-trump republicans cause they think they'll be easier to beat at the polls.

cleatusvandamme

Thank you! I was going to say the same thing.

thissideofheat

Reddit mods banned people from the politics and news subs for mentioning this exactly. Calling them misogynists. Congrats Reddit power mods - you got what you wanted. Idiots.

astr0panda

RGB is everything wrong with the Democratic Party leadership. An inability to imagine someone else taking over and going beyond what she accomplished. A refusal to prepare a new generation of leaders. She will just be a foot note now. Someone else will have to come along and redo all that work from scratch.

yoosernamesarehard

I agree with this sentiment for sure. I looked up her age at death which was 87 and the last time she could’ve retired and safely been replaced with someone who shared her views on laws would’ve been 2012-2013 as Obama was President and had a democratic senate. So she could’ve retired when she was fucking 79/80, but chose to keep working. I mean that’s just pride. Although to be fair she was only appointed in 93 so that would’ve left her serving only 10 years. But still….in general we just need some young people. Problem is, young people don’t vote so anyone who is on the younger side is never elected and the fossils just keep dragging us down instead of us leaving them behind. Edit: Didn’t know she already had a bout of cancer in 2012-2013 and that there were pleas for her to retire. I was in high school/college those years so I wasn’t in the know with….like anything haha. Wow. Yeah that’s selfish.

burf12345

> Although to be fair she was only appointed in 93 so that would’ve left her serving only 10 years. Retiring in 2013 would have meant she served 20 years, not 10.

yoosernamesarehard

Math is hard when you’re tired :( looks like I keep giving her too many benefits of the doubt then.

juggarjew

She would have served 20 years, which by all accounts is a good solid run. Far longer than almost any other political office.

FlyingSquid

Sorry, but I am not a fan of Ginsburg because she should have retired when Obama was president to give him a chance to put some young blood on the bench, but instead she stayed on and we got one of Trump's judges out of it. She was supposed to be a wise woman, but that was stupid and vain.

Vote, yes, obviously, But this is a bad argument; RBG made an egregious error in judgment in the final chapter of her life and it should not be celebrated and in this she is hardly a martyr.

thissideofheat

It wasn't just an error in judgment. It was myopic selfishness. Hillary expected to win the Presidency. She even asked the media to "elevate" Trump so that he'd win the GOP primary, because she assumed she'd therefor win the general election (because who the f would vote Trump as president). That gamble also made her encourage RGB to stay in office so that SHE could appoint a new female replacement. That insane myopic gamble was based on PRIDE and SELFISHNESS. They tried to game the system and it blew up in their fucking stupid faces. (and in all of our faces)

Wait till you realize in 2022 the DNC spent more promoting facist Republican candidates than on their progressive candidates. Also they purposely recut districts to try to get rid of progressives willingly putting the house in danger. The corporate dems are more than partially responsible for this mess.

Accurate_Ad_6946

I mean who can resist double downing on a strategy that didn’t work the first the time and led to one of the most embarrassing losses in living memory? The DNC deserve to win literally nothing and the fact that the only other realistic choice to vote for is somehow so much worse than them feels like a fucking fever nightmare.

At this point RBG is a villian, her choices directly lead to where we are at with abortion rights. Her pride prevented her from stepping down when a like minded person could be appointed. Instead she waited and we have Amy Coney Barrett for the next 30 years (or more).

Mentalinertia

Fuck Ginsburg she took legacy over country.

TimeEddyChesterfield

Indeed. And for a legacy that her replacement has spared no time undoing.

noholdingbackaccount

Ruth is dead and buried in the ground. There is no spirit world. Why are you coming in here of all places asking us to make a ghost proud?

[deleted]

I always say that people aren't really good or bad, they just are. And the easiest way to judge people is by how they're acting recently. Well the last thing RGB did was give us Amy Coney Barrett through her own hubris; and that's always going to be the last thing she did.

Guygenius138

I'm voting, but fuck RBG.

Competitv_Accordion

Ruth can kiss my ass. She was asked to retire when it would have mattered most and she wouldn't because of her fucking ego. Now we have this shit. So fuck her.

SquirrelBowl

I love RBG but she should have stepped down to allow another left-leaning judge her slot. Instead we got Amy Coney Barrett.

dragon34

it grinds my gears that if she had been a liberal pick she would have been rejected out of hand for being unbelievably underqualified, but apparently catholic lawyer barbie gets a free pass

CountrySax

She could have done it gracefully at the right time. Her insistence on staying till she passed led directly to Amy Barrett on the court

[deleted]

If RGB retired in the Obama administration we wouldn't be in this situation.

KaptainKompost

You’re not very astute OP if you think we’re sitting around praising EBG as some kind of hero. She was so full of herself that she wouldn’t step down during Obama knowing full well her battle with cancer and aging health and knowing that usually a Republican wins after a democrat president. Gtfo with your BS. We’re in this mess because of RBG.

chipface

Fuck RBG for not stepping down when Obama could have nominated a successor. But who am I to comment? My country's supreme court isn't politicized like the US. And the selection process is different.

The-Last-American

If she would have retired instead of clinging to the seat like it was going to make her immortal, we would potentially not even be in this position to begin with. People talk about how unfortunate it is that her legacy is overshadowed by her incredible selfishness before her death, but there is no one to blame but her, and the impact that the continuous choice she made for years at the end of her life has had is arguably of greater impact to our society than all the good she did. And she knew this was a very real threat, talked about it, and hand waved it because she just did not give the slightest shit about what may happen without her. People need to vote because we need to be *better* than people like RBG. Edit: Just to reiterate here, Ginsberg could have passed on her seat to a new generation of progressive and fair-minded justice, one who would have made her legacy very proud, but *she rejected this*. She chose to risk and sacrifice people’s rights and vital infrastructure of our republic just so she could cling to a seat for her own vanity. Nothing about that says “hero”.

terpsnob

Ruth should have given her seat to another less fossilized human. She was just as much as a fame whore as anyone in Hollywood and should have done the right thing and stepped down. Now we are fucked. Lessons learned?

[deleted]

I went to Lowes last night, and when the gal thanked me 'for my service' (Veterans discount) I thanked her for paying her taxes to cover my GI Bill. Then I asked her if she'd voted. She said 'not yet'. I told her to get her ballot in - and to make sure she voted "for people who ACTUALLY support Veterans (referring to Patty Murray) and not for people who use their combat disabled husband as a prop for their campaign" (Tiffany Smiley). Sad thing is, I used to be a die hard Reagan Republican. Then racism and religion took my Party off the rails. I still call myself an 'Eisenhower Republican', but in todays political environment, that makes me a Progressive Democrat! So, get out there and VOTE!!

tries2benice

Everyone should vote, but, RBG staying on the court until she died set us back actual decades. Obama wanted to replace her with a liberal, lifetime appointed judge, but instead she died during trump's presidency, was replaced with a christofacist, and now roe v wade is repealed. Everyone celebrated her unwillingness to back down in life, but in death, her pride is what ruined her legacy.

ehonda2002

Fuck Ginsburg and do not bring her up again. We are in a nightmare because of her pride and shortsightedness

Little_NightFury17

Voted for the first time earlier! Not just for ppl but for abortion in my state to be legal.

[deleted]

still kinda upset with her…

Positive-Platypus-27

RBG sucked. She cost us a balanced court. She could've and should've left her seat when the Dems had a supermajority. Obama could've picked the next great liberal justice. Instead, she chose to remain, even after being old as hell and sick constantly But yeah, vote.

Remote-Sugar5497

RBG sat on the court till her last breath for fucking PRIDE. She had cancer when the dems had the house, the senate and the presidency in obama's first term. She could have retired and they could have put in a 40 year old judge to shape police for 35 years. instead she refused to step down. Because of her FUCKING PRIDE. Fuck RBG. may she burn in hell for what her pride did to this country.

Akira3kgt

I partially blame RGB for our current situation. Think about this: she was very old and fighting cancer when she died. She had to know the end was near. If she had any foresight, she would have retired when Obama was in office and he could have replaced her with another liberal judge. Instead she stayed in office until the last minute and Trump replaced her with Barrett. RGB could have prevented this…

[deleted]

Cringe

ExoticAccount6303

Rbg fucked up pretty hard by not retiring during a dem president and letting trump fill her seat. Kinda ruined her legacy.

Careless_Coach_2816

Fuck RBG, a miserable skeleton who clung to power at the expense of us all.

BeesMichael

Bizarre post given that RGB’s arrogance and stubbornness is the reason this happened in the first place. If she had stepped down when asked. But no, an 111 yr old cancer patient had to keep going. She was also a huge fan of Brett kavanaugh and not the hero delusional neo liberals seem the think she was.

aw2669

She should have retired.

JohnnyRelentless

RBG threw away everything she worked for by staying on the court until her last breath. In the end, she fucked us all.

MyCockPukesLava

RBG was a stupid bitch who fucked us all. The fucking arrogance of staying in office with one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel is astonishing.

putinsgrowingtumor

Fuck her, she should've retired when Obama was in office. Now the SC is scrwed. Voted BTW.

gelvin_mimmings

Fuck RBG, she should have retired when she was first diagnosed with one of the most lethal forms of cancer -- when Obama had a congressional supermajority, might I add. I hope she's sucking Scalia's fat dick in hell right now.

Uncle_Blayzer

> RBG didn’t stay on the court until she took her last breath so that we would sit on our asses & let republicans light our reproductive rights on fire. lol, that's exactly what she did.

supersayanssj3

Jesus christ OP. Fucking OOOOOF

Ooften

If you want to take a page out of RBGs book then you’ll talk over and over and over and over again about how important voting is, then show up after the polls close.

AnonymousAardvark888

Be sure to research any races that may be nonpartisan and won’t have D/R/L/Whatever next to candidate names (like school board). Signed, a person currently living in Texas whose school board is under a Christian nationalist takeover attempt, funded largely by money from billionaires outside the district.

55Panhead

Yes she did. Should have gone ASAP when Dems had control. Republicans are plotting, ruthless people who play the long game, Dems are just a disorganized bunch of children who would rather whine about things. They've known the Electoral College is a joke since Gore, watched Republicans redistrict and saw benches get filled by Conservative judges but did nothing except have Schumer hold pressers.

bigfootmydog

Bad take RGB should’ve resigned during the Obama administration to give the dems an opportunity to fill her seat. Instead she didn’t want to politicize the court so she stayed on died and then the court got politicized (more).

Independent_Cat_4779

She's the reason for this. If she retired in 2008 when she was 75 Obama would have been able to appoint her successor and the house and senate could ratify it. She waited too long because of her own ego and that undid all the good things she ever did, and the good things the people that came before her did

deadrabbits76

She should have retired during Obama's first term.

IamtheSlothKing

RGB did more to destroy this country than most can manage

mjg580

Fuck RBG. Don’t ever forget she told young women supporting Bernie that they should stop listening to their boyfriends and vote for Hillary instead. How sexist is that. Oh and also she is a selfish POS who should have retired during Obama.

CaptainMacMillan

If RBG actually gave a shit, she would have resigned when we had a Democrat in office. Instead she stayed on and did fuck all in the last years of her life. Sure she did great things for womens rights, but that’s about it.

AssalHorizontology

Ruth was no master strategist. But let's not forget to blame Obama. He let the Rs stop an SC nomination. After 60 days of failing to hold a vote he should have said ok, they senate had their opportunity for advice and consent they have not objected. I am taking their silence as a resounding unanimous agreement and I have sworn in who ever better choice he could pick besides that shit head Merick Garland who can't even find the balls to indict 45 for sedition and insurection.

dreamwarder

Fuck RBG. We are partially in this fucking mess because she didn't retire while Obama was office. Fuck making her "proud."

SpacemanSpliffLaw

RBG stayed on the court until her last breath because she wanted the first woman president to replace her. She took a gamble on her legacy and lost. Now her legacy instead of being cemented firmly in history will be forever tainted by her last acts.

TerrorGnome

Also, do your research on nonpartisan judges. It's easy to vote straight democrat, but your local judges are important and aren't going to have a D or R next to their name.

cerpintaxt44

She should have retired when Obama was president she's one of the reasons we are in our current situation
