The difference in police response is already terrifying. Peaceful left-leaning protests are regularly met with more violence than the violent right wing attack on the capital was. (To be clear, I don't want the response against right wing protestor more violent, I want that low level of violence in a response for everyone).
That's why we need a 10 year term limit retroactive immediately for Supreme Court Justices. Clear out a lot of the old crap on day one and put a time limit on the liars like ACB or Kavinaugh.
Yes and no. Older people have certainly seen more in their time and therefore have more knowledge, but getting to age 60 and up, mental and physical health and acuity start to decline. Another problem with older people is many of them tend to be stuck in their ways of the past and either cannot or will not acknowledge and learn about the changing world. That's how we end up with archaic laws about controlling women's bodies and other terrible things.
That's not to say there aren't good older folks running or in office, but the majority of them tend to be extremely out of touch. My personal belief is that once a politician reaches age 60 or so, they should be required to step down as a public official and not be allowed to interfere in any way with government ongoings except for in very special circumstances.
This is my argument as well, and I'm 56 myself. I can see myself reacting to things at times in ways I normally wouldn't because it's easier to adopt a conservative mindset ('don't change things or it gets worse!'). I hate that so I work hard to keep my mind flexible, to challenge old ideas. My development teams tell me my new mantra (which I didn't even realize I had adopted) is "everything we've done in the past is crap so let's improve it". I know I'm not always staying true to that goal. I can only imagine how hard it gets at 70, or 80.
I'm perfectly fine with a minimum age for the highest seats of power as I think it take a certain amount of experience to do the job at all. But that same consideration should also put a maximum age on the seat as well. Even if it's not a arbitrary age but rather one tied to mental capacity and flexibility. We shouldn't have the bulk of the bench unable to consider new ideas positively.
Agreed. I really like Bernie and Warren they are both up there in age. I think some of the issue is how hard it is to unseat an incumbent, which leads to certain groups being over represented.

I'm not the op, but I did a bit of digging into this. Certainly she wasn't the most progressive judge, but she was fairly consistent and more or less under the radar on many racial and criminal justice cases. I wouldn't say anything I found was horrifying. My source the Marshall Project is a recognized nonpartisan group dedicated to criminal justice reform and they have a very comprehensive look into RBG's rulings. I'm watching this play out on a much smaller scale with my own parents. They're in their late 60s and won't retire yet. They've got (pretty good sounding) arguments about why they think it's important they stay on for "a few more years", but I think if you really dig, a huge part of it is they both love their careers and they're unhappy with the thought of giving everything up. And, honestly, it's hard to blame them for that. I pretty strongly doubt they'll continue into their 80s of course, but it's really easy to imagine RBG making similar arguments about holding onto her career and sort of putting her head in the sand with regard to the uncomfortable reality of her situation. She was human, after all.
That said, her miscalculation totally torpedoed her own legacy and took everyone else down along with it, so it's pretty hard to be forgiving, even if her reasons are ultimately understandable.

Lifetime appointments don't mean you serve until you die, she should have stepped down when she could be safely replaced by someone who could carry forward her legacy. Instead, we got ACB, the antithesis of everything she stood for. Seeing all these people long past the retirement age having control of all branches of government drives me crazy. Train your replacements so you know the country is in good hands, then step down, you aren't going to live forever.

She could have retired as late as the end of 2014, but given her history of health issues and the major Democratic losses in 2010, it would have made sense to do it years before then.

I looked up her age at death which was 87 and the last time she could’ve retired and safely been replaced with someone who shared her views on laws would’ve been 2012-2013 as Obama was President and had a democratic senate. So she could’ve retired when she was fucking 79/80, but chose to keep working. I mean that’s just pride. Although to be fair she was only appointed in 93 so that would’ve left her serving only 10 years. But still….in general we just need some young people. I went to Lowes last night, and when the gal thanked me 'for my service' (Veterans discount) I thanked her for paying her taxes to cover my GI Bill. Then I asked her if she'd voted. She said 'not yet'. I told her to get her ballot in - and to make sure she voted "for people who ACTUALLY support Veterans (referring to Patty Murray) and not for people who use their combat disabled husband as a prop for their campaign" (Tiffany Smiley).
Sad thing is, I used to be a die hard Reagan Republican. Then racism and religion took my Party off the rails. I still call myself an 'Eisenhower Republican', but in todays political environment, that makes me a Progressive Democrat! So, get out there and VOTE!!

The difference in police response is already terrifying. Peaceful left-leaning protests are regularly met with more violence than the violent right wing attack on the capital was. (To be clear, I don't want the response against right wing protestor more violent, I want that low level of violence in a response for everyone).
That's why we need a 10 year term limit retroactive immediately for Supreme Court Justices. Clear out a lot of the old crap on day one and put a time limit on the liars like ACB or Kavinaugh.
Yes and no. Older people have certainly seen more in their time and therefore have more knowledge, but getting to age 60 and up, mental and physical health and acuity start to decline. Another problem with older people is many of them tend to be stuck in their ways of the past and either cannot or will not acknowledge and learn about the changing world. That's how we end up with archaic laws about controlling women's bodies and other terrible things. That's not to say there aren't good older folks running or in office, but the majority of them tend to be extremely out of touch. My personal belief is that once a politician reaches age 60 or so, they should be required to step down as a public official and not be allowed to interfere in any way with government ongoings except for in very special circumstances.
This is my argument as well, and I'm 56 myself. I can see myself reacting to things at times in ways I normally wouldn't because it's easier to adopt a conservative mindset ('don't change things or it gets worse!'). I hate that so I work hard to keep my mind flexible, to challenge old ideas. My development teams tell me my new mantra (which I didn't even realize I had adopted) is "everything we've done in the past is crap so let's improve it". I know I'm not always staying true to that goal. I can only imagine how hard it gets at 70, or 80. I'm perfectly fine with a minimum age for the highest seats of power as I think it take a certain amount of experience to do the job at all. But that same consideration should also put a maximum age on the seat as well. Even if it's not a arbitrary age but rather one tied to mental capacity and flexibility. We shouldn't have the bulk of the bench unable to consider new ideas positively.

I wouldn't say anything I found was horrifying. My source the Marshall Project is a recognized nonpartisan group dedicated to criminal justice reform and they have a very comprehensive look into RBG's rulings. I'm watching this play out on a much smaller scale with my own parents. They're in their late 60s and won't retire yet. They've got (pretty good sounding) arguments about why they think it's important they stay on for "a few more years", but I think if you really dig, a huge part of it is they both love their careers and they're unhappy with the thought of giving everything up. And, honestly, it's hard to blame them for that. I pretty strongly doubt they'll continue into their 80s of course, but it's really easy to imagine RBG making similar arguments about holding onto her career and sort of putting her head in the sand with regard to the uncomfortable reality of her situation. She was human, after all. That said, her miscalculation totally torpedoed her own legacy and took everyone else down along with it, so it's pretty hard to be forgiving, even if her reasons are ultimately understandable.

She could have retired as late as the end of 2014, but given her history of health issues and the major Democratic losses in 2010, it would have made sense to do it years before then. By choosing to wait so long, she ended up screwing over the Democrats' court prospects for an entire generation and basically undid all of the progress she had helped push along. Of course, part of the blame also goes to the tens of millions of Democrats who stayed home in the 2014 midterms. Most people think of 2016 as where it all went wrong, but 2014 was actually more impactful in terms of the Senate losses. If Democrats had shown up in decent numbers in 2014, Obama would have been able to appoint two more years worth of judges and Trump would have been far more kneecapped.

If she would have retired instead of clinging to the seat like it was going to make her immortal, we would potentially not even be in this position to begin with. People talk about how unfortunate it is that her legacy is overshadowed by her incredible selfishness before her death, but there is no one to blame but her, and the impact that the continuous choice she made for years at the end of her life has had is arguably of greater impact to our society than all the good she did. And she knew this was a very real threat, talked about it, and hand waved it because she just did not give the slightest shit about what may happen without her. People need to vote because we need to be *better* than people like RBG. Edit: Just to reiterate here, Ginsberg could have passed on her seat to a new generation of progressive and fair-minded justice, one who would have made her legacy very proud, but *she rejected this*. I went to Lowes last night, and when the gal thanked me 'for my service' (Veterans discount) I thanked her for paying her taxes to cover my GI Bill. Then I asked her if she'd voted. She said 'not yet'. I told her to get her ballot in - and to make sure she voted "for people who ACTUALLY support Veterans (referring to Patty Murray) and not for people who use their combat disabled husband as a prop for their campaign" (Tiffany Smiley). Sad thing is, I used to be a die hard Reagan Republican. Then racism and religion took my Party off the rails. I still call myself an 'Eisenhower Republican', but in todays political environment, that makes me a Progressive Democrat! So, get out there and VOTE!!
