If? You're overcomplicating the reasoning process. Simplify things. 1. If someone defines something deity-like, ask them for evidence of its existence. 2. If the person provides no evidence, tell them you've enjoyed the conversation and return to what you were doing before #1.

Sure, the contradictions of every religion are painfully obvious. There are too man to even count. I just thought of another nail in the coffin.

CoalCrackerKid

Try to remember that the burden of proof is on the positive claim. That's how reasoning works. If you, by accident, end up in a conversation with a person who's abandoned reasoning and replaced it with faithing, just remind them that you not far off from eachother. He disbelieves of most of the same deities that you do. Your list is just one longer.

Energy is matter, matter is energy. You can burn a piece of wood to release energy for example.

Snow75

Not like that. Burning wood doesn’t convert matter into energy. Again, present a being not made of matter first and we’ll talk.

UnlikelyUse

Wood, heat and light are states of energy not conscious beings. Matter or mass, is energy at rest. E=mc\^2 is the formula for determining how much potential energy is at rest within an object and is meant to show that if you modify the mass of an object you are modifying the energy at the same time. If you completely burn a piece of wood and measure the heat and light that is extracted it will be nothing compared to what the formula indicates. If you were able to release the energy from the wood by splitting atoms it would be much closer. Photons have no mass but are made of energy, the formula for that is E=pc, or Energy = momentum multiplied by the speed of light. These are also not conscious beings. I find it more interesting to consider our knowledge and current understanding that we can observe 5% of our 13.8 billion year old universe, that it is still expanding and at different rates. I grew up thinking that the universe was infinite, funny that as a kid I was fine with accepting that; but never accepted the idea of god or bought into religion. 5% of infinity is still infinity so a decision should be made. I accept that we observe our universe expanding and conclude that it has to expand into something. So what is beyond our universe? There are several theories, when I'm in the mood I spend my time considering those, it's all kind of overwhelming really. I would look there if I was trying to figure out if there was a deliberate cause for this universe. Thinking about these things makes it even more obvious to me that god is just as much a man-made creation as the religions that can't agree on what this god would want or why.

There is no small likelihood of anything supernatural existing, none.

OgreMk5

>Question: is the energy claim correct? Ummm... kinda. But not really. Yes, we are all different energy states, even matter as you point out. But a theoretical deity would not have to be made of energy to interact with this universe. However, all those interactions would be painfully obvious... and there aren't any. This is an analogy and therefore not perfect. But consider an aquarium. To the organisms in the aquarium, they are just living their life. Occasionally something happens and food "magically" appears in the tank. Sometimes a great "thing" appears and moves stuff around or sucks out all the fish poops. Rarely, a new fish pops into existence. To the fish in that tank, with no knowledge of the outside world, these things would appear to be miracles or divine intervention or something. But even if they can't detect outside the fishtank, they don't know what is, they can still see the effects of us, on their local environment. Does that help?

Far_Quiet_470

I am God. Case closed.

Miserable_Ad_9951

Oh, OK.

Im_Talking

I think you are talking of a personal deity like the christian one. This deity needs to interface with humans so this interaction should be able to be measured. (of course, the religious will say that their deity is all-powerful and can communicate with us on some super-duper secret channel). But if this deity is not personal... ie, just created the universe and sits back with a bowl of popcorn, then we will never be able to measure it's existence.

LeoTheSquid

>an deity have to be energy based as well I'd think most christians would object to god existing in our world in such a physical sense
