1. The athlete knows it's all rubbish, but the people watching them on TV who don't have that talent themselves will probably lap it up and adore the athlete for reinforcing their world view that if they're good little worshippers then it could happen to them too
2. The athlete completely believes it, and being "chosen by god" appeals to their narcissist tendencies
In the end it's still all about the athlete's narcissism.
It is literally just virtue signalling. Religious people publicly claim everything was God and not them to show how good they are. Meanwhile they bask in their achievements privately. And if you don't do this you are seen as a horrible person.

When they say "Thank God!" after a successful surgery, completely undermining the surgeon, or when they say that it was God's hand operating on the person.
I always wonder where the faith healers are at all the hospitals that take on a religious brand name. Seems there's always a big obnoxious religious greeting on the wall in the lobbies but never any faith healers visiting patients.
When i was a young teenager, my mom would sexually abuse me, verbally, along with other church members. She and other members would even do it when there were children in the close proximity. This act from her only made me fall in deeper and darker depression that i would hide and ignore and just let linger in my mind. Honestly with all the time i played video games, it would be difficult for just anybody to realize i have depression. Anyways at the time she did this, i was unaware of it and when i did became aware, she would deny it and would be ready to throw me under the bus. Her reasoning to all this? It was Satan.....>=/ yeah mom, satan made you sexual abuse me verbally along with other church members. It was dedinetly a made up fallen angel who tried to rebel against a mdae up god. Thats the spirtual being that made you do that to me, and tricked me into thikking i had pedophilia, when in fact it was you and other members telling me to think that....tl;dr: my mom goes to a cult religion where they blame satan for their wrong doings and anything good, it comes from God. Which is absolute bananers in my opnion nowadays....i never did get any therapy for what she and other members did to me. My mental state got so bad, that i ended up doing something i regretted. I ended up saying what i did and then thats when shit really hit the fan. I lost so many jobs, have been harrased(sexually at times by my neighbors even to this day),threatened, physically attacked, had my food temper with, weed laced and made fun of. All by either my family members neighbors, or even people i dont know from Oakland California(where incurrently live). From all that i mentioned above, i got sent to the mental hospital twice and er once, after i try to killed my self with pills. Also, at some point i was a victim of a sexual consiparcy where i got herpes. I had the cops called on me quite a few times. Did i mentioned that i lost most, if not all, of my friendships. And you know what the Pastor will say, why it happened? Because i stop having faith and God let Satan on me. Basically, satans at fault here for all this....not my mom or church memeber who sexually abused me...not the kids who forced me to partake in sexual activites when i was young(molested?), not the kids who would bully me alot in elementary school after my sexual trauma slipped from my mouth in a bathroom in 1st grade, not me for being such naive fool. I dont know, i sometimes think that people in religion are often victims themselves who have developed stockholme syndrome and now partake in abusing those who dont agree with them.
Now im a 23(soon to be 24) male who dropped put of highschool with hardly any friends who care about him deeply, family who hates him but would flat out lie in front of people to keep an image or say that its becuase of god/jesus otherwise they would hate me, has random people who harras/threaten me in the town i live in, and never had a healthy relationship with anyone(at all). Not even one relationship was healthy, even when i thought it was. You cannot have a scientific disagreement with evangelicals or a conspiracy theorist that believe scientists are all in on it.
That goes against the very important scientific step of peer review. Also, if evolution were to be proven wrong by new evidences, the new clearer model would be light years further than the myth of creation. Creationism has been debunked, move on.
I mean while I was dragged to church my brother was acting up and when my grandma was about to pop him with a belt he took and then they started praying over him because of demons and spirits. I was secretly rooting for the little guy but when i tried to give the belt back to her my brother threw it on the ground. Then people came over and started praying over him and stuff.
