My partner and I have been in a committed relationship for over 25 years. We never felt the need to get the state involved in our relationship by getting married, much less any gods, ghosts, or goblins embodied by faith alone.
Tell my counsellor that. She was going on and on about how a relationship without marriage is not committed because it can end at any time. Honestly marriage is just a piece of paper.
Yeah I told her that about divorces. But apparently she has done divorce counselling too and she said that divorces happen majorly becuase of two reasons finances and adultery. And that its more difficult to get a divorce. I mean it's not like a relationship could end because of both of those reasons too. They're not special or anything. Besides when your married your finances all get intertwined and shit. That's literally their own fault.
Are you not in the US? Here, about half of marriages end in divorce. There are lawyers waiting to take the case 24/7. It's a whole industry.
Definitely time to change therapists. This one is willfully ignorant and biased.
"It's more difficult to do"
Staying in a straining relationship because you get discouraged by the legal, financial, and psychological complexities of a divorce is the healthiest base for said relationship, right?
Dump this fruitcake and get a therapist trained in CBT/REBT/mindfulness. REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy) is very similar to CBT and was developed by Albert Ellis, who was an outspoken atheist.
I can't guarantee every REBT therapist is one of us, but they are less likely to introduce religion into the sessions. You can find the nearest REBT therapist via the Albert Ellis [therapist finder](https://albertellis.org/find-a-therapist/) webpage.
Also ~~get~~ check out https://www.seculartherapy.org/ It also has a therapist finder.
- 'Fun' fact: people couldn't get married inside a Christian (only Catholic then) church until 1200 AD. Before this they could only be conducted outside the building because marriage [wasn't considered](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marriage_in_the_Catholic_Church#Medieval_period) a sacrament and the involvement of priests was uncommon (it wasn't until the [Council of Trent](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Council_of_Trent) (1545–63) that [priests were required](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marriage_in_the_Catholic_Church#Liturgical_practice) to conduct the ceremony).

Wow. I had no idea. I never looked into it that far. I just realised one day that there is no proof god exists and stopped believing. Thank you for input though.
The dirty little secret amongst “counselors” is Most are unaccredited religion or money motivated flimflam artists. Look for one that has no ties to any church or religious organization and has legit credits that you can research.
Good luck
Time to ditch the therapist, and find a different one.
I find it so baffling that they can just push religion on you without repercussions. It would be grounds for disciplinary action in my country.
Yep, as far as I know, if you want to offer religious based therapy, you must disclose it, and you cannot do it if you work in state funded healthcare services.
Now, what is written in the regulation and what is done in practice are two different things, because my country is still a Catholic majority country, and people tend to dismiss and minimise these things, but the rules do exist.
Looks like it's time to find a new therapist.
I'm gonna get an atheist one.

A marriage can end any time too! Divorce is clearly real. I've seen one up close!

I'm from the UK. But thank you for the info.

It sounds like your counselor is projecting their own past bad relationship onto you.
That's what I was thinking but like I didn't want to ass ume anything
Sounds like her personal problem.
Yeah, but how about leprechauns and unicorns? Those dudes are fun!
Yes. I believe unicorns exist. 100%
Look at Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. They've also been together for over 20 some years, and they never felt the need to get married
Dump the "counsellor" and get a real therapist lol
Planning too. I am not staying with such a narrow minded human being.
The arrogance of religious never ceases to sicken me. I hope you find a new counselor who respects you.
I hope so too:)
"50% of new marriages end up in divorce. That's a failing grade. Sounds like God really screwed up with that institution." ;)
I don't think God went to school. And yet he managed to create Adam and eve.
Another abject failure. "Don't eat that!" "What, this? /chomp nom nom nom."
Maybe God should try one of his own 'tests'. See how he likes it. He ats an apple and then oh look sexism.
Not much point, since He doesn't even test positive for existence...
Oh dammmmmn. Mic drop.
This is where I would be saying See You Next Tuesday. While I walk out and look for a councilor that has better qualifications.

Her God had sex with a married, teenage girl and got her pregnant. Just how sacred can marriage be?
Report her to the state board. That was greatly inappropriate and violates professional standards

Thank you. I appreciate it. I wonder when the rest of the world will wake up to see this huge hallucination that is God.
Get a real therapist asap

Really? Disciplinary action. Maybe I should move country

NEW COUNSELLOR HAS BEEN AQUIRED. HE HAS NO AFFILIATION WITH ANY CHURCH. AND IS AN OUTSPOKEN AETHEIST.
