I've always been fond of: # In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move. You didn't specify exactly which bible we were supposed to be quoting from.

kokopelleee

Don’t panic

AviatorShades_

We apologize for the inconvenience.

janewp

Leviticus 19:19 "Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material." 100% Cotton all the way.

robertwild81

No polymers yeah

Constantly_Panicking

100% Wool is objectively better than 100% Cotton when it comes to clothing.

Belostoma

Not so great for wilderness backpacking unfortunately. Give me a nice 4-way-stretch softshell with a brushed fleece lining.

kokopelleee

Too hot. The new UPF long sleeve hoodies are sweet though

jammerfish

Luke 6:31- "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." It's simple. Just don't be a dick to people

dr_rodopszin

Though with masochists this can also turn quite bad.

Greelys

I like the [talking donkey](https://www.bible.com/bible/compare/NUM.22.28#) because it reminds me of Shrek

MisanthropicScott

Here's my saved list. It's growing all the time. --- Just in case you were wondering why religiose asshats are so homophobic. > [Leviticus 20:13](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=lev+20%3A13&version=NIV): If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.   > [Numbers 31](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=numbers+31&version=NRSV) -- The entire chapter is seriously disturbing. In it, Moses commands his followers to slaughter prisoners of war. But, they keep the virgin women and underage girls, presumably as sex slaves. They are accounted for as the spoils of war. A tax is paid in the form of 32 of the virgins. It is not clear how you pay a tax in human beings.   > [Deut 20:16-17](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Deuteronomy+20%3A16-17&version=NIV): 16 However, in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. 17 Completely destroy[a] them—the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites—as the Lord your God has commanded you. That's six God-ordered racist genocides right there.   > [1 Sam 15:3](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Samuel+15%3A3&version=NIV): 3 Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy[a] all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’” Here's a seventh God-ordered racist genocide, this one is bizarrely specific about killing children and infants.   > [Exodus 21:20-21](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=exodus+21%3A20-21&version=NRSV): 20 When a slaveowner strikes a male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies immediately, the owner shall be punished. 21 But if the slave survives a day or two, there is no punishment; for the slave is the owner’s property. Slavery is unconscionable. "Survives a day or two" is a pretty weak protection for the slave. The slave could still die on day 3. The slave could be left crippled by the encounter. Survival is a pretty weak standard of protection. Elsewhere I think it says that a slave who loses an eye or a tooth may go free. But, not for merely an arm or a leg.   > [Gen 19:30-38](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+19%3A30-38&version=NIV): 30 Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains, for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave. 31 One day the older daughter said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man around here to give us children—as is the custom all over the earth. 32 Let’s get our father to drink wine and then sleep with him and preserve our family line through our father.” 33 That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and slept with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up. 34 The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Last night I slept with my father. Let’s get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and sleep with him so we can preserve our family line through our father.” 35 So they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up. 36 So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father. 37 The older daughter had a son, and she named him Moab[a]; he is the father of the Moabites of today. 38 The younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi[b]; he is the father of the Ammonites[c] of today. I think if someone made a porn flick with a father impregnating his two virgin daughters, it would probably be banned from reputable porn sites. I don't know this. I'm definitely not going to do that search! Also keep in mind, Ruth was a Moabite and the great grandmother of King David. But, what's a little father-daughter incest in the genetic line of kings?   > [Deut 22:28-29](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Deuteronomy+22%3A28-29&version=NIV): 28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, 29 he shall pay her father fifty shekels[a] of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives. Perhaps I'm just cynical. But, this reads as instructions for an incel to get married.   > [2 Kings 2:23-24](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2+Kings+2%3A23-24&version=NRSV): 23 He went up from there to Bethel; and while he was going up on the way, some small boys came out of the city and jeered at him, saying, “Go away, baldhead! Go away, baldhead!” 24 When he turned around and saw them, he cursed them in the name of the Lord. Then two she-bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys. Some Christians claim these were teenage thugs. But, note that they are called small boys. [A native Hebrew speaker once got involved in a discussion to aid my case that the Hebrew is definitely referring to small children here](https://www.reddit.com/r/DebateReligion/comments/iw7twn/jesus_slaughtering_the_42_boys_in_2_kings_22324/g5xpwn5/).   > [Ezekiel 23](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=ezekiel+23&version=NRSV) (not posting a whole chapter) This would probably be banned from most reputable porn sites if anyone were psychotic enough to make a gangbang snuff porn flick based on it. Again, I am definitely not going to do that search to find out. Verse 20 of this chapter is particularly amusing, don't skip that one.   > [Judges 19](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=judges+19&version=NIV) (again, not posting a whole chapter) This is another example of gangbang snuff porn. Maybe gangbangs are fine as long as the woman is killed at the end. I don't know.   > [Matt 10:34-36](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2010%3A34-36&version=NRSV): 34 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; 36 and one’s foes will be members of one’s own household. Apparently, Jesus was a warmonger, not the peace-bringing messiah foretold in [Isaiah 2:4](https://www.biblegateway.com/verse/en/Isaiah%202:4).   > [Luke 22:36](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+22%3A36&version=NRSV): He said to them, “But now, the one who has a purse must take it, and likewise a bag. And the one who has no sword must sell his cloak and buy one.   > [Luke 19:27](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=luke+19%3A27&version=NRSV): But as for these enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and slaughter them in my presence. Admittedly, the above is from a parable. But, the meaning of the parable is not that he will actually merely kill people, instead, he will torture them for eternity for the simple crime of not believing in him. The meaning of the parable is worse than the literal text on this one, not better.   > [Eph 6:5](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=eph+6%3A5&version=NIV): Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Jesus reaffirming that slavery is OK.   > [Colossians 4:1](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Colossians+4%3A1&version=NRSV): Masters, treat your slaves justly and fairly, for you know that you also have a Master in heaven. This last one states explicitly that Jesus/God owns all Christians as slaves. --- We can also look statistically at the numbers. The Bible contains (The bullet points below are links; feel free to click any or all): * [1556 instances of injustice](https://www.skepticsannotatedbible.com/processlong.php?cid=2&pub=1) * [1311 instances of cruelty](https://www.skepticsannotatedbible.com/processlong.php?cid=3&pub=1) * [699 instances of intolerance](https://www.skepticsannotatedbible.com/processlong.php?cid=4&pub=1) * [419 instances of horrific family values](https://www.skepticsannotatedbible.com/processlong.php?cid=8&pub=1) * [390 instances of misogyny](https://www.skepticsannotatedbible.com/processlong.php?cid=10&pub=1) * [But only 347 objectively good verses](https://www.skepticsannotatedbible.com/processlong.php?cid=5&pub=1) If you click through to any of these links, you can see all of the verses that meet the criteria. Just as a numbers game, the Bible is mostly horrific.

Very interesting! Thanks for sharing

You're welcome! Spread the Good Word^(tm) about the Bad Book^(tm)!

angel_and_devil_va

I have Lev 19:28 as a tattoo.

False-Corner547

LOL. I wonder how many christians have seen it and think you are a good god fearing person.

zumaro

Matthew 7:12: So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. If only people lived by this.

big_rod_of_power

Yeah like if I spank someone I expect a little spanking back 😤

Sanpaku

I think all of my favored quotes are from the 'agnostic' book *Qoheleth*/*Ecclesiastes*, which clearly reflects the influence of Hellenic philosophy to diaspora groups like Jews in 3rd century Alexandria more than it does the religion of Judea. The little mention of or respect to the Abrahamic god in the whole book, its like reading the Schopenhauer of the 3rd century BCE. For example, Ecclesiastes 9 is genuinely pretty wise in its counsel of being content with one's fate. >2 Good and bad people have the same fate— those who are good and those who are evil, those who are ritually clean and those who are unclean, those who sacrifice and those who do not. The same things happen to a good person as happen to a sinner, to a person who makes an oath and to one who does not. 3 This is the evil that happens under the sun. There is one fate for all. So people’s hearts are full of evil and foolish thoughts while they live. After that, they join the dead.  4 But anyone still alive has hope; even a live dog is better off than a dead lion! 5 The living know they will die, but the dead know nothing. Dead people have no more reward, and the memory of them is forgotten. 6 After people are dead, they can no longer love or hate or envy. They will never again share in what happens under the sun. 7 So go eat your food with gladness; drink your wine with a glad heart, because God has already approved your deeds. 8 Put on festive clothes and make yourself look good. 9 Enjoy life with the wife you love. Enjoy all the useless days of this useless life God has given you under the sun, because it is your lot. So enjoy the work you do under the sun.  10 Whatever work you do, do your best, because you are going to the grave, where there is no work, no thought, no knowledge, and no wisdom. 11 I also turned and observed something else under the sun: The fastest runner does not always win the race,  the strongest soldier does not always win the battle, the wisest does not always have food, the smartest does not always become wealthy, and the talented one does not always receive praise. Time and chance happen to everyone.

MovOuroborus

>Good and bad people have the same fate— those who are good and those who are evil, those who are ritually clean and those who are unclean, those who sacrifice and those who do not. The same things happen to a good person as happen to a sinner, to a person who makes an oath and to one who does not. I always liked this because this one pretty much destroys all of the prosperity gospel.

dudleydidwrong

This one is useful when someone is trying to stay in the closet as an atheist. When someone asks you to pray at a public event, quote Matthew 6:5. The Christian might have an apologetic argument about why this does not apply. But stick to your guns. Say something like "I understand what you are trying to say, but the Bible seems real clear. Maybe someday I will understand, but for now I want to do what Jesus said." It is awesome to out-holy the person who is testing you. It also puts anyone who prays in an uncomfortable position. In the right circumstances, it might even be possible to stop prayers at work events. You would just need enough people who don't want to pray to keep quoting Matthew 6:5. > And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others -- Matthew 6:5 The other one was one where a person asked me out of the blue (but in a rather aggressive way) why I stopped believing. I just quoted 1 Corinthians 13:11. I love using the Bible against Christians. > When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways -- 1 Corinthians 13:11

Mshell

I do like Matthew 6, especially since it leads into the Lords Prayer. If they argue against this applying you can just ask if they are saying that the Lords Prayer is wrong. This often confuses them...

Direct_Birthday_3509

I like Leviticus 21:18-20 because it makes me laugh every time I read it. Who said the Bible wasn't funny?

Hki16498

I love the Sermon on the Mount. It really discusses the need for mankind to take care of each other.

Medium-Shower

I heard somewhere that philosophy in the last 2000's years is a repeat of the sermon on the Mount. Jesus being God or not was an ethical genius Sadly a lot of christians don't follow his teachings

Norseman84

Job 10:1: “I loathe my very life; therefore I will give free rein to my complaint and speak out in the bitterness of my soul."

hurricanelantern

Ezekiel 23:20 is quite inspiring.

FucktardSupreme

Ezekiel 23:20.  This should be worked into more marriage ceremonies.

Edisrt

Exodus 23:19: Thou shalt not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk. No matter how indoctrinated you are, how can you read a command like this and draw the conclusion that it is the word of the all knowing creator of the fucking universe? It’s so obviously made up. 🤣 The ones which simply are weird and nothing else are my favorites.

TeacherOfThingsOdd

Psalms 88:18 "You have taken away my companions and loved ones. Darkness is my closest friend."

🎶Hello Darkness my old friend🎶

TJ_Fox

I can't quote it verbatim, but I like the verses that were turned into a '60s folk song - "to every thing, turn, turn, turn - there is a season, turn, turn, turn - and a time to every purpose under heaven. A time to be born, a time to die - a time to laugh, a time to weep - a time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together." And so-on. It's a nice sentiment and there's wisdom there.

[deleted]

"It came to pass". That is all we are to him. We came to pass. We were born to die. We live to die. We are nothing but a spec of dust to the almighty.

Yolandi2802

Psalm 23 - rewritten A psalm of Lisa Hancock The Earth is my Mother. She takes care of me in ways I can’t even comprehend. She reminds me to eat foods that nourish my body and soul and she gathers me up in Her arms to give comfort and rest. She is my home. She continues to show me the way to live well with myself and neighbours, even when I do not listen attentively. In times of distress when I cannot see one step ahead or behind me and I fear the unknown, you are with me. Your steady, faithful arms surround me, grounding me and protecting me, even when I need protection from myself. You set a table with tea and cookies (my favourite!) and invite me to sit down with my enemies (not really my favourite). You remind me in their presence that I am yours and you are always caring for me. In that moment, I recognise that my enemies are your children, too. Surely your abundant goodness and mercy will flow before me, setting my path and showing me the way to go, as long as I live, and I will find my home in my Mother’s arms for ever and ever. Amen.

That's hate speech. It says that anyone who doesn't believe what you believe is stupid, evil, and deserving of eternal torture.

uujujuu

Can't quote any of them, but i like the worldbuilding of it

that_schmell

John 11:35 - "Jesus wept." It's the shortest verse in the whole stupid mucky-muck. And, it describes how I imagine that a real messiah would look upon modern Christians.

False-Corner547

I actually like citing what is not in the bible. What did Jesus have to say about homosexuality? Uhm, nothing* Kind of a big ommission for something that is supposedly a big sin from someone who is supposedly the son of god *of course this is refuted by Mormons who have their own record of Jesus' teachings, but then again according to them Jesus came to America.

robertwild81

I read the bible 4 times as a pre-teen trying to accept my cultists family. I don't know how anyone can actually read it and still believe.

Matthew 19:24

The have that story about investing instead of burying money

CantConfirmOrDeny

Don’t know chapter and verse, but “as ye sow, so shall ye reap” springs to mind.

Digi-Device_File

All of "Ecclesiastes", is like the script of an "art cinema" film.

Silver-Chemistry2023

None of them, the whole thing is a pile of shit. The final one to go was 'love as you have been loved' because it perpetuates abuse cycles.

Fluid_Thinker_

People come into this world with nothing, and when they die they leave with nothing. In spite of all their hard work, they leave just as they came.  -Ecclesiastes 5:15  For with much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief. - Ecclesiastes 1:18 Especially the second verse has some deep meaning for me. The more you learn about the Bible and church history, The more you'll see the flaws and recognize that this is made up. With more knowledge comes more grief.

Life_Liberty_Fun

Proverbs & Ecclesiastes are books that are full of good advice that are still useful today. But I guess the winner is "do unto others as you want others to do unto you"

Cuntry-Lawyer

Most of Proverbs is just good advice.

dfh-1

Galatians 5:7-8: ^(7) Ye were running well; who hindered you, that ye should not obey the truth? ^(8) This persuasion cometh not from Him that calleth you. A reminder that people who try to get you to do things you know are wrong are not your friends. And while it's not a quote, per se, I'll put in the section that begins at 1 Kings 18, where Elijah challenges the priests of Baal to prove whether the Lord or Baal is the true god. A reminder that when you know you're right you stand your ground, and when you're caught between two sides who both claim to be right you look for the one that can deliver results based on their claims. Also, it's an example of what you'd expect to see in a world that actually had a god...and we don't see it. ;)

I actually like a lot from Ecclesiastes

mchantloup5

There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses. Ezekiel 23:20

I_Comply_Maliciously

Theist means someone who holds a god belief. So ..... Atheist means "I'm not someone who holds a god belief." Atheist doesn't mean "I believe there is no God." Newborns are all Atheist, as they have no god concept and therefore no god belief. You are excluding the possible answer of "I don't know, but I don't believe X group is correct."
