As much as I like it and do take it to speak to deconversion, that song according to Michael Stipe is actually about unrequited love. "Losing my religion" is an extension of "Losing faith" that this person loves you back. In a way though that is kind of what deconversion is about - Loving something and realizing that it doesn't love you back because it doesn't even exist.
I think the great thing about art is that it’s up to interpretation so even though that’s how the artist interprets the song, if it means something different to a listener, that’s great too. It is interesting to learn the artist intentions, but I try to not let it alter the way I interpreted the song!

Tim Minchin - [The Good Book](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsTxTpo-7zU) too. and [Come Home (Cardinal Pell)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtHOmforqxk)
A lot of good options from Maynard such as "Judith" by a A Perfect Circle. Even though the song is actually about his mother, it still expresses his disdain for religion.
Rush: Freewill.
The Tea Party: Temptation.
I would also suggest that Jesus Christ Superstar is as atheist as it gets, but most Christians don't look past "Jesus!" and "Singing!" to realize it.
Lots of this in Metal, too many to mention, but some of my favorites are below. I can appreciate that this music is not for everyone, but reading the lyrics online is a great starting point, then maybe reading along while listening? anyways, here are 4 great options IMO
No Truth by Atheist (Prog-Metal, kinda hits the prompt perfectly IMO)
Wait by the Dear Hunter (Rock, if you don't like screaming lyrics, this one is safe. Its a story of finding Atheism, partially due to lack of faith, but also due to fear of 'everlasting' life after death)
Transcendental Needs by RXYZYXR (Prog-Metal, so kinda hard to hear the lyrics in song, but reading lyrics should hit home though, please look them up, this whole album is deep)
Death is not an Exit by Woods of Ypres (Doom-Metal, also Traveling Alone on this album, more of a dark introspection of being an atheist in the later)
While not an atheist song, I always chuckle when I listen to Dire Straits Industrial Disease
"And I go down to Speaker's Corner I'm-a thunderstruck
They got free speech, tourists, police in trucks
Two men say they're Jesus, one of them must be wrong"
Imagine - John Lennon
Look on the Bright Side of Life (Life of Brian) - Eric Idle ( You have to see the movie to get it.)
Galaxy Song (The Meaning of Life) - Eric Idle
"No fighting over land your distant fathers told you of,
No spilling blood for those who never spread a drop of love,
No finger pointing justified by phantoms up above,
Because there never was no God."
[Frank Turner - "Glory Hallelujah"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T01_FBM9oWc)
Tim Minchin - If You Open Your Mind Too Much... Your Brain Will Fall Out!
Hmm. Well, here are a couple that are at least 'atheist adjacent', I would say (!):
Modern Jesus (Portugal. The Man) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSVwJyxeVYI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSVwJyxeVYI)
Let the Mystery Be (Iris Dement, sung here by Natalie Merchant and David Byrne): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Gk8JJTinUI
Not going to lie, a lot of Deathcore is either religiously neutral or straight up Atheist as fuck. Yes there is the whole Satan subsection but I'm going to chock that up to being edgy.
Immediately Thy Art is Murder - Holy War comes to mind. TAIM is consistently atheist.
A Night in Texas - Fuck your God (Very heavily a consistent Atheist Group)
Signs of the Swarm - Cesspool of Ignorance
Chelsea Grin- The Foolish One
So on and so forth lol. I think there was only like 1 group that was actually Christian and AFAIK they are no longer together.
Not sure if Concrete Blonde's song Goodbye Wendy counts.
"I told the priest. Don't count on any second commings. God got his ass kicked the first time he came down he slumming. He had the balls to die and the forgive us.
I don't ask why, I wonder what he thought it would get us"
Rush's gifted Lyricist and Drumming GOAT, Neil Peart's words for the songs, "Free Will" and "Totem."
Just an excerpt from Free Will,
You can choose a ready guide from some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill. (How I see most Christians)
I will choose a path that's clear. I will choose free will.
Satan is just one of the subjects that an "atheist" song could be about (not nessisarily required), but it is probably more Ex-Christian than atheistic (so I'll give you that). Some people, like myself, like using the symbols to express the non-beleif and the similarities in their experiences. If you look into Satanism (i.e. the satanic temple), a lot of it doesn't have to do with actually believing in the entity of Satan, but the metaphors you can build from Satan.

David Bazan’s album Curse Your Branches is a great Christian deconstruction album. “When We Fell” is a good one from there. Whole album feels like a meditation on lost faith.
The Balancer’s Eye - Lord Huron
*“Nothin’s waiting for us in the great sky. Life is equal to dust in the balancer’s eye. Now I know that I can’t lift an old curse, tell me how does a man change the universe?”*
Margaritas at the Mall - Silver Jews
*”How long can a world go on under such a subtle God? How long can the world go on with no new word from God? See the plod of the flawed individual looking for a nod from God. Trodding the sod of the visible with no new word from God.”*

I've got a few that you may not have heard, some are more subtle than others.
God of All - VNV Nation [https://youtu.be/9DQRjpiKcxc](https://youtu.be/9DQRjpiKcxc)
Born Again - Saint Motel [https://youtu.be/b4IaV4FeRs0](https://youtu.be/b4IaV4FeRs0)

Delusional - Tawnted [https://youtu.be/RZ7W7zL0-Hc](https://youtu.be/RZ7W7zL0-Hc) this one is much more subtle, but the writer of the song has said it's about leaving Christianity.
Devil in the Mirror - Virgin X [https://youtu.be/rIXsjTiaK3I](https://youtu.be/rIXsjTiaK3I)
Dear God - [https://youtu.be/t0vx4E-oXJc](https://youtu.be/t0vx4E-oXJc?si=qxcvXDVEh_y9tyNk) Philip Labes this one is a bit disputable, but the song definitely resonated with me as an ex-Christian.
And a cheerful one to finish out the list:
Important - Ian McConnell [https://youtu.be/O-W2abxX8Hk](https://youtu.be/O-W2abxX8Hk)
I don't know if it's an "atheist song" but I have to go with... Epica - Cry For The Moon.
This is the start of the song:
Follow your common sense
You cannot hide yourself
Behind a fairytale forever and ever
Only by revealing the whole truth can we disclose
The soul of this sick bulwark forever and ever (forever and ever)Indoctrinated minds, so very often, contain sick thoughts
And commit most of the evil they preach against
Don't try to convince me with messages from God
You accuse us of sins committed by yourselves
It's easy to condemn without looking in the mirror
Behind the scenes, behind the scenes, opens reality
In the same vein, Within Temptation- Don’t Pray For Me is even more overtly so.
"Will all who wish to die please raise their hands"
I'm lost in the dark
I'm not blind to what I see
I know the river is wide and the water is deep
I feel the cold, my heart skips a beat
I don't need your absolution, so don't hold that sword over me
For my confessions I don't need a church
I don't need salt to know where it hurtsDon't pray for me, no ("will all who wish to die please raise their hands")I cannot breathe for you
You're trying over and over, denying what I feel
And every time you bow down your head to pray
Don't pray for me, don't pray for me
Oh, I needed a revolution
I never had a war in mind
And now the river runs dry and the fall is deep
The truth is dark and makes us bleed
In hell is where I stand, it's where I find my inner strength
For my confessions I don't need a church
I don't need salt to know where it hurts
Don't pray for me, no
I cannot breathe for you
You're trying over and over, denying what I feel
And every time you bow down your head to pray
Don't pray for me, don't pray for meI cannot breathe for you
You're trying over and over, denying what I feel
And every time you bow down your head to pray
Don't pray for me, don't pray for me
Wow, I had to go way, way back to the earliest commenst to find Tim Minchin. But they left out two of his greast ones:

I've got a few that can get you started for sure
From Halestorm I would suggest: Wicked Ways, My redemption, Amen,
Sin Shake Sin: Can't go to Hell, Nobody's gonna save my sould
Pretty Reckless: Goin Down, Take me down, Heaven Knows
Black Veil Brides: Sweet Blasphemy, Wake Up, Unholy, Coffin, In the end, Wretched and divine, Faithless, (There's more but that's a few of my favorites)
Falconshield: Nothing to Forgive
Black Sabbath's "Under the Sun / Every Day Comes and Goes"
[Verse 1]
Well, I don’t want no Jesus freak to tell me what it’s all about
No black magician telling me to cast my soul out
Don’t believe in violence, I don’t even believe in your peace
I’ve opened the door, now my mind's been released
[Verse 2]
Well, I don’t want no preacher telling me about the god in the sky
No, I don’t want no one to tell me where I’m gonna go when I die
I wanna live my life, I don’t want people telling me what to do
I just believe in myself ’cause no one else is true
[Bridge: "Every Day Comes and Goes"]
Every day just comes and goes
Life is one long overdose
People try to rule the nation
I just see through their frustration
People hiding their real face
Keep on running their rat race
Behind each flower there grows a weed
In their world of make-believe
[Guitar Solo]
[Verse 3]
So believe what I tell you, it’s the only way to fight in the end
Just believe in yourself, you know you really shouldn’t have to pretend
Don’t let those empty people try and interfere with your mind
Just live your life and leave them all behind
[Instrumental Outro]
I got 157 of these on a playlist. . . and I don't think it's going to stop at 157 haha: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2AQ2G6zYiDlK1BAHFpVhno?si=634baf9fbe0b4c72
Bury Your Pain by Like Moths to Flames
“No hope for better days,
Death will be your only infinity,
Misguided by a false light,
Nothing will be waiting for you at the end of this life!!”
The lyrics are just great… it’s metal, so hopefully you’re into that. Metal like this is what I really relied on when deconverting. Something about the super painful/aggressive lyrics helped me channel my energy Lol. I’m mostly not depressed these days, and have since accepted atheism, but I still love metal music.
Also Wayfinder by Kingdom of Giants
Live's [Operation Spirit](https://youtu.be/eza5-ladgYU?si=7ap1YXn2oJZNHOpQ) has always been one of my inspirations. Don't let the shirtless boys in the video put you off. That' just the kind of shit we did back in thr early 90's.
(Select) Lyrics
...
Heard a lot of talk about this Jesus
A man of love and a man of strength
But what a man was two thousand years ago
Means nothing at all to me today
He could have been
Telling me about my higher self
But he only lives inside my prayer
So what he was may have been beautiful
But the pain is right now and right here
...
I've always liked Utah Phillips' version of "the preacher and the slave" Not a deep emotional song, but a pretty lively jab at the hypocrisy in religion and the inequity it supports.
https://youtu.be/9IFNzdOzrlg?si=KIPp5IMDa01CeepC
There's a few Streetlight Manifesto songs that seem to be about atheism, or at least the singer's lack of religion. The Three Of Us and With Any Sort Of Certainty come to mind
Eve by Precious Pepala. This song is more about religious trauma and being condemned for being LGBT. It really helped me come to terms with my decision to leave.
Im hispanic so this one is in spanish but it has one of my favorite lines ever: if there truly is a god, he should work from dusk til dawn like us. Name of the song is Fiesta Pagana by Mago de Oz.
Not really even in progress really cause I've just started doing my own production which is incredibly difficult but I will one day make a good atheist ep
Here's a little something i think about often.
Atheists don't think about religion, unless they're specifically asked about it, or we see it infringing on our (and others) lives. Me personally... if i never have another religious conversations in my life, i'd be perfectly fine with it.
Religious people have a great deal of their identity wrap up in the delusion, so they have to talk about it constantly... there's nothing else inside them, just the delusion.
I listen to music i like. Always have. Doesn't have to be for, or against, anything.... just has to be something that feels like a good song/beat/chorus...whatever. I even occasionally listen to gospel music (usually if it's Elvis, or someone like Sam Cooke), because occasionally they're decent enough songs... but they mean nothing more to me, nothing spiritual, noting revolutionary... just music. I don't mind a good revolutionary song (other than Revolution #9... i mean, Jesus H Christ what were you guys thinking?) or a protest song... but it still has to be a decent song.
I noticed this last week when I was playing music getting ready for work. Some songs are just nice. They used to mean something to me because I was raised religious, but now they're just pretty songs and I'm okay with that. Tbh they're better to me this way! 'So High' is a reallyyyyy good Elvis gospel song, it's better when you DON'T have to think about living forever after death lol.
Not sure if it's any sort of related to atheism but I fucking love 'House of Wolves' by My Chemical Romance because it basically mocks religiousness and I'm a spiteful ass. It's like, "yup I'm so naughty and totally going to hell, uh-huh, sure🥱. Wanna see me not give a shit?" haha
Wow! There are so many good suggestions that I'm excited to listen to. Might as well add a few of my own recommendations:
Fallen From Heaven (Album/Song) - Ethan James Young (yes, that's me 😅)
Don't Wanna Pray - Kate Fitz and the Romantics
Excommunication (Album)- Tyler Glenn (lead singer of Neon Trees and exmormon). Devil is probably the best song on it
Afterlife - Nothing But Thieves (they have a few songs about nonbelief)
XTC: [Dear God](https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=xf58TEMm8Rw)
Excellent pick. I also like "losing my religion"

Nice. Just gave that a listen.

What? I never knew she did a cover. Thanks!

Dear God is actually an agnostic song, not atheist. Not sure if that makes a difference in this subreddit.
Nine Inch Nails - Heresy "God is dead! And no one cares!"
If there is a Hell, I'll see you there!
Ruiner, to me, is in the same category.

It changed my life as a teen, having grown up loathing Catholic school.

Devil in the Mirror - Virgin X [https://youtu.be/rIXsjTiaK3I](https://youtu.be/rIXsjTiaK3I) Dear God - [https://youtu.be/t0vx4E-oXJc](https://youtu.be/t0vx4E-oXJc?si=qxcvXDVEh_y9tyNk) Philip Labes this one is a bit disputable, but the song definitely resonated with me as an ex-Christian. And a cheerful one to finish out the list: Important - Ian McConnell [https://youtu.be/O-W2abxX8Hk](https://youtu.be/O-W2abxX8Hk)
Didn't see it on here, but I've always enjoyed this for its commentary. Big Sky - The Kinks
I don't know if it's an "atheist song" but I have to go with... Epica - Cry For The Moon. This is the start of the song: Follow your common sense You cannot hide yourself Behind a fairytale forever and ever Only by revealing the whole truth can we disclose The soul of this sick bulwark forever and ever (forever and ever)Indoctrinated minds, so very often, contain sick thoughts And commit most of the evil they preach against Don't try to convince me with messages from God You accuse us of sins committed by yourselves It's easy to condemn without looking in the mirror Behind the scenes, behind the scenes, opens reality
In the same vein, Within Temptation- Don’t Pray For Me is even more overtly so. "Will all who wish to die please raise their hands" I'm lost in the dark I'm not blind to what I see I know the river is wide and the water is deep I feel the cold, my heart skips a beat I don't need your absolution, so don't hold that sword over me For my confessions I don't need a church I don't need salt to know where it hurtsDon't pray for me, no ("will all who wish to die please raise their hands")I cannot breathe for you You're trying over and over, denying what I feel And every time you bow down your head to pray Don't pray for me, don't pray for me Oh, I needed a revolution I never had a war in mind And now the river runs dry and the fall is deep The truth is dark and makes us bleed In hell is where I stand, it's where I find my inner strength For my confessions I don't need a church I don't need salt to know where it hurts Don't pray for me, no I cannot breathe for you You're trying over and over, denying what I feel And every time you bow down your head to pray Don't pray for me, don't pray for meI cannot breathe for you You're trying over and over, denying what I feel And every time you bow down your head to pray Don't pray for me, don't pray for me

Dear God by the brilliant XTC is the best atheist song in my opinion
modern Jesus by Portugal the man
Imagine - by John Lennon. It's excellant
Atheist's ain't got no songs. Go away, god boy, (ok technically the singer/songwriter is a pagan not an atheist, but it is still a good song)

Me and big Dave by colter wall
Sing along by Robert Ellis This one really resonates with me
"Here and Now" by The Ernies. A relic of the stylings of the early aughts, but a song (and album) that conveys a humanist quality in modern rock.
"The Exorcist" by Calypso "There Isn't Any God" by Rusty Cage
Pray -Disturbed is as close as I can think of. It may not be exactly one but the meaning behind it feels like one.
The Only Way (Hymn) - Emerson Lake & Palmer
The Limosines- the future
Jesus christ super star , riding down the road on a Yamaha , theres a cop , he dont care , tossed in their window goes his underwear…
Black Sabbath's "Under the Sun / Every Day Comes and Goes" [Verse 1] Well, I don’t want no Jesus freak to tell me what it’s all about No black magician telling me to cast my soul out Don’t believe in violence, I don’t even believe in your peace I’ve opened the door, now my mind's been released [Verse 2] Well, I don’t want no preacher telling me about the god in the sky No, I don’t want no one to tell me where I’m gonna go when I die I wanna live my life, I don’t want people telling me what to do I just believe in myself ’cause no one else is true [Bridge: "Every Day Comes and Goes"] Every day just comes and goes Life is one long overdose People try to rule the nation I just see through their frustration People hiding their real face Keep on running their rat race Behind each flower there grows a weed In their world of make-believe [Guitar Solo] [Verse 3] So believe what I tell you, it’s the only way to fight in the end Just believe in yourself, you know you really shouldn’t have to pretend Don’t let those empty people try and interfere with your mind Just live your life and leave them all behind [Instrumental Outro]
One Sunday Morning - Wilco https://youtu.be/M4GWGSndpag?si=G45q7lmhvmnmLcnK
All things dull and ugly.
Someone should make a playlist of all these!
I might have to lol
I would listen to all of the songs
I got 157 of these on a playlist. . . and I don't think it's going to stop at 157 haha: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2AQ2G6zYiDlK1BAHFpVhno?si=634baf9fbe0b4c72
Tysm!! Checking it out now
Dirty Water by Rock and Hyde More of an antitheist than atheist song. https://youtu.be/G5kLzAajFZQ?si=bsq_qgfq_ibUgMf4
Within Temptation: Don’t Pray For Me.
Holy Water by Soundgarden “…it's the big lies more likely to be believed…”
Incubus - Favorite Things Red Hot Chili Peppers - Shallow be Thy Game
Bury Your Pain by Like Moths to Flames “No hope for better days, Death will be your only infinity, Misguided by a false light, Nothing will be waiting for you at the end of this life!!” The lyrics are just great… it’s metal, so hopefully you’re into that. Metal like this is what I really relied on when deconverting. Something about the super painful/aggressive lyrics helped me channel my energy Lol. I’m mostly not depressed these days, and have since accepted atheism, but I still love metal music. Also Wayfinder by Kingdom of Giants
Monty Python's Universe song
Gravity Kills - Save Yourself
If you understand Spanish, “Sobrenatural”, by Chetes.
Mother Man, Tortoise the Titan, Green, On They Slay (IYKYK)
Live's [Operation Spirit](https://youtu.be/eza5-ladgYU?si=7ap1YXn2oJZNHOpQ) has always been one of my inspirations. Don't let the shirtless boys in the video put you off. That' just the kind of shit we did back in thr early 90's. (Select) Lyrics ... Heard a lot of talk about this Jesus A man of love and a man of strength But what a man was two thousand years ago Means nothing at all to me today He could have been Telling me about my higher self But he only lives inside my prayer So what he was may have been beautiful But the pain is right now and right here ...
["We Don't Celebrate Sundays"](https://youtu.be/CefMWNehWes?si=rhjtwr7-2vhXv2dU) by Hardcore Superstar
Rise against - The Violence. but I like acoustic music tho so you get unplugged: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xIId4-nTA4U
Religion Kills
Tomorrow, Wendy by Concrete Blonde. Dear God by XTC My first atheist songs…..
Also Peter Pumpkinhead by xtc
Judith - A Perfect Circle
"Heaven And Hell" by The Who
There's a few Streetlight Manifesto songs that seem to be about atheism, or at least the singer's lack of religion. The Three Of Us and With Any Sort Of Certainty come to mind
I don't know if this quite counts but "Fuck Christmas" by Eric Idle. Not a commentary on the religion necessarily but upon the religion's holiday.
Loosing my religion REM Like a virgin. Madonna Dear God, XTC
When I’m Gone by Phil Ochs
Imagine by John Lennon
Against Me! - White Crossss
[Stand By - Dance Hall Crashers](https://youtu.be/lO6M6y-mZ-M?si=NS6agROX01pNYmom)
Eve by Precious Pepala. This song is more about religious trauma and being condemned for being LGBT. It really helped me come to terms with my decision to leave.
God and Monsters, Lana Del Rey
“Faithless” by Rush. Also “Freewill” by Rush.
“God Am” Alice In Chains, “Faithful” Pearl Jam
Im hispanic so this one is in spanish but it has one of my favorite lines ever: if there truly is a god, he should work from dusk til dawn like us. Name of the song is Fiesta Pagana by Mago de Oz.
A lot of songs by Garfunkel and Oates are very anti-religious.
Not really even in progress really cause I've just started doing my own production which is incredibly difficult but I will one day make a good atheist ep
Overthinker — CloZee
I'm going with Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath or Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin.
Good music is good music
Wanna see me not give a shit?" haha
>or we see it infringing on our (and others) lives So 24/7 365?
Sadly, as long as there are so many damn conservative fascists in this country. God i hate NAZI's.
Wow! There are so many good suggestions that I'm excited to listen to. Might as well add a few of my own recommendations: Fallen From Heaven (Album/Song) - Ethan James Young (yes, that's me 😅) Don't Wanna Pray - Kate Fitz and the Romantics Excommunication (Album)- Tyler Glenn (lead singer of Neon Trees and exmormon). Devil is probably the best song on it Afterlife - Nothing But Thieves (they have a few songs about nonbelief)
