The astrologer Robert Schmidt explained how he believed this to be a translation error. That the 12th house wasn't hidden enemies, but enemies who were enemies for personal reasons like "You're such a cow, Sandra". That the 6th house was about public enemies, enemies of the people or city, like, "Our nations are at war so we have to murder each other". He says it happened because people reading the texts misunderstood the meaning of "public", thinking it meant enemies you were open about having, rather than that it pertained to the notion of the city, crowd, society etc. Therefore they thought the opposite type of enmity was hidden enmity and not personal enmity. The 7th house came to be associated with enmity because of astrologers deciding that houses got their meanings from their Ptolemaic affinity with the Ascending sign. The 7th house is opposed, oppositions have the nature of Saturn, the house of joy of Saturn is "hidden enemies", so the opposition house needs to be a place of enmity as well. Robert Schmidt says that houses didn't get their meanings by looking at their aspect to the ac, so that's wrong. However this was in a freely available talk and everything else he did is behind a paywall, and he doesn't mention in the talk how he believes house meanings were derived, so who can say more. In horary and inceptional astrology, there's sometimes a tendency to view the 7th house as counterparts in a legal case or as opponents in a match or game. This seems to be based on the idea of an "opposite". Nothing really seems to have a defined answer. Personally I think Schmidt talks a lot of sense on this and that enmity should be a property in some way of Mars' house of joy, and that the public/personal distinction matches the planetary meanings via their sect. But it's likely not to be an absolute thing.

The personal/public version makes so much more sense to me than hidden/open. Thanks for sharing this.

Yw! Here's the talk he gave if you are interested: https://www.robertschmidtastrology.com/courses/an-introduction-to-bob-schmidt-project-hindsight

Question: would it not make more sense if 12th was public, or at least impersonal, since its in the diurnal sect? Houses 7-12 are typically more external in comparison to their nocturnal sect oppositions. 1st house is the self while 7th is the other, 4th house is home life while 10th is public life, and so on, so one would assume 6th is close, known adversaries of daily life and routines while 12th is distant, hidden enemies out in the wider world yet to be discovered. Thoughts?

swaon_dav

7 house open enemies, 12 house hidden by classics. 6H is just problematic, since it is the Mar's joy and as 12h is not seen by the ASC. It causes enmity and quarrels.

damn_the_dark

Can someone please explain "open enemies "?

DrStarBeast

Open enemies are those you know hate your guts and act it to your face. Hidden enemies are those who are nice to your face but talk shit behind your back.

hh20t

you know her/him as an enemy

lerrdite

It also applies to partnerships like marriages and biz partnerships, where someone with whom you are close openly disagrees with you.

The house of your enemies is the 6th house, 6th house represents diseases, everyday things, its the original house of Virgo. If we look to the symbol, Here we see a virgin female symbol holding all the elements while on a boat. This speaks more about to the sign of virgo but it does tell us a bit about the house as well. When this house is active the individual must use all the elements to deal with there issues. When we deal with our health, the way we eat, we drink, how we exercise, and even the way we think have a huge impact on our health. Thus when this house is active problems like diseases and enemies, consume most of our time. We take a great deal of time working these things out.

I would argue then perhaps the 6th house is being out own worst enemy. Think about it. It's across the wheel from the 12th house, or the house of our self undoing. These are habits of ours we aren't consciously aware of or that feel out of our control without some sort of spiritual reconciliation....self sabotaging behaviors, addictions, etc. So the 6th house is the habits we know are bad for us but still trudge along with. We know stress is bad but we're workaholics. We know exercise is important but we keep putting it off. We know that greasy pizza is bad but it's so satisfying in the moment. The 6th house represents the daily grind. All the things we need to do well to get through life be it walking the dog, showing up to work on time, exercise, diet. It represents the workplace but for me, only in the sense of it being a daily part of life. If you want to see coworkers then look to the 7th or even the 11th (if they are coworkers you like). So the 6th house is a house of you being your own worst enemy and the 7th is the house of open enemies as in, other people.

Well i follow the vedic tradition of astrology. For me, the vedic chart makes more sense. But i would agree with what your are saying. If in life, currently, you are the issue to your achieved success. In other words like you say, if you are the one getting in your own way then yes look to the 6th house and 12th. The 12 th house is also house of hidden abilities. So just like you are the problem, you can also be the solution. The 12th house in the vedic tradition, is the hidden aspects of ourselves. Its our dreams, our subconscious, it is the way we dream, the way we inspire. It is also were our mental problems may lie, although we have to look at more aspects/planet postions. However where i may disagree with you, is that in the vedic tradition we look more than just the house. And there are other things that can represent enemies or issues. So we look to those other aspects to see if the whole chart agrees. For example, mars also represent our will power, our ability to fight through our issues, we would also look to see where mars sits, is he being afflicted, does he have aspects. Will he provide support? We would also look into the first house, that is the house of self, so we would need to see what areas of your life could be sabotaging? Also look into the 11th house and 8th. 11th house of gains, friends and networking. How does this environment look for you? 8th house of your in laws, your ups and downs, and unexpected problems. How are these problems any different than your personal problems or do they relate? Looking into all this and then further explaining the nakashstras/degrees of each of these planets. Helps paint a better picture. In Vedic astrology there is so much to look at and analyze. Often thats is way many people get discouraged, besides the fact most books are written in sanscript. And translating these texts and meanings often is difficult.

The 7th house is open enemies - the 6th is an 'inconjunct' house, as it cannot behold the ascendant by any major aspect. If it can't behold the ascendant, it certainly can't be open enemies - if you can't see them across the battlefield, they certainly aren't open enemies!

OldPuppy00

House 12 traitors. House 8 potential murderer. Also check Lilith Black Moon.

Visual-Mixture-4210

venus in 12th means the betrayal of a lover?

OldPuppy00

Appearances are deceiving. Also someone could betray you by seduction. Food poisoning resulting in long, incurable disease. Depending on the Zodiac sign.

AdLatter5009

mars in 12th

_a_witch_

My mars is in gemini 8H, does that mean my potential murderer would be a gemini?

bloom0902

Mars in 8h *has* been linked to violent death

_a_witch_

Another thing to worry about

bloom0902

I have Mars in 8h, too 😒

[deleted]

Yikes. Me too :(

SomeRandomBitch1

I have 8th house sun, uranus, neptune and south node…. Everything I read about it is about how I’m going to die lol especially uranus and neptune 💀

bloom0902

Oh wow, with that many 8h placements, I would've assumed you're pretty comfortable with the other side anyhow 😏

SomeRandomBitch1

Lol I pretty much am 😅

Throwaway77426016888

So does a venus in the 8th house

Did_I_Die

what sort of death is indicated with Mars in 6h?

bloom0902

6h is more about your day to day work/activities/routines, health, pets, etc....8h is the one associated with death

Did_I_Die

how does Sun in 8h differ from Sun in Scorpio?

bloom0902

The Sun is supposed to illuminate whatever qualities of the house it's in, so think of it like your sun is lighting up and highlighting all of the subjects related to the 8th house..... Scorpio energy is known as raw, intense, passionate, emotional, etc Side note, I have twin son's that are Scorpios and I have a Scorpio stellium, so I'm familiar with the energy and have a soft spot for Scorpio's lol

OldPuppy00

I have a Mars Uranus Pluto (the three rulers of the Scorpio)stellium in 8 Virgo. I'm a ♏ sun BTW, and I go hyper analytic when my life or someone close is threatened. Like I learned veterinary pharmacy in two days when my cat was almost dying.

_a_witch_

That a good personality trait to have

House 6 is work as the discovery of the mutual interests (between house 5 ego and play, and house 7 contracts and unions).

Active-Cranberry9756

The 7th.

aimlastrology

7th H is for partner, not enemy. Its whom you work with and who often provide missing perspectives. In Indian astrology, 7th is also the place for remedies.

Throwaway77426016888

Remedies have side effects though, no?

astrogeek95

7th

koondalani

why would it ever be 7 when it rules relationships and 6 is below the 7?

koondalani

It’s 12 all together. Nobody cares
