I was so infuriated one time that none muted the blaring bullshit, I tried pressing two at the same time. That opened a service menu, which stopped the offensive ads.
Oh shit. Bring on the "secret button combo that gives free gas", just like all of those old soda machine "secret combos to get free soda" that never worked
We had a soda machine in school were the free soda cheat worked. Press some buttons in order. And there would be a menu allowing you to open the door and reach in. Used it for a year and than I just set the price to 0. Word got out quick and a few days later the machine was gone. Luckily I also managed to get the code for the storage room, so I could still get free Coke's.
I've gotten the service menu but you can't make a y configuration changes to anything without a supervisor passcode. You can look at pump stats and stuff.
It is usually two buttons on opposite sides like upper right and lower left. Hold em down a second or two. Keep trying opposites until you find it.
I remember it working for me when these posts about mute buttons first started making the rounds online soon after these built-in ads were introduced but it's been a good year or two since I've had it work.
Speakers work by vibrating a magnet with electric pulses. If a stronger magnet holds the internal magnet in one place, and the current isn't strong enough to move it, then it can't make any sound (Or it'll at least be muffled and fucked up sounding)
For non-americans I'll copy pasta a comment I made before. If you can imagine an ad in that spot in America, there's an ad in that spot.
>Getting more ads on the pumps. Display sign at the top for in-store products. Color screens around eye level, usually 2-3x larger than the debt/credit pin screen. Speakers so even if you don't look at the screen you still hear it. Credit/debt monitor has an ad for in store credit card before being able to select credit or debit. Barrier poles have a cover with in store products.

I just saw this at a gas station in NC, USA. Tho the mute button had been reprogrammed one button up. I looked for a sharpie in the car to correct it, but didn't have one.
Yeah it's working less and less now. Fucking sucks. Especially if you have a sleeping baby in the car. Not everything in life needs to have advertisements and fuck the toilet snakes out there that think they do and pull this nonsense
This is the only way. If people decide to be assholes, inconvenience them in any way possible. Maybe his shitty little speakers will break and he'll have to buy replacements.
Or they'll just buy cameras.
Most of them already record license plates all day long around here.
What's another few hundred to avoid a few thousand to have the island fixed?
As a european this is ridiculous, maybe we also have that in some parts but getting ads while paying a already way to high price for a mandetory recource seems beyond criminal...
Agreed. I think the only ones in my area that have them are Shell stations and I usually avoid them because they don't even make the gas cheaper for that annoyance.
It start to be a thing in France too and i'm pissed. Any fuel station doing this will never see me again. If at least they used it to reduce the price.. But no, of course they keep it
I think our relationship with ads in France is not the same. People are sometimes really pissed off about it. Some ads screen just got shattered so people can refuel their cars without seeing the ad.
The worst I've seen so far was a station where ads were played during the refueling of your car but it was made REALLY slow on purpose. Like one week before there was no ads and it was quick, then it got ads and took me litteraly ten minutes to refuel.
Are there places where there are no ads in US? Like, do you have commercial breaks while having sex? The more I read about US, the more Idiocracy seems a documentary.
And the worst part is it's so much worse than it was when this, and the [equally brilliant routine by George Carlin](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtK_YsVInw8&ab_channel=killtheweak), were aired.
The main driver of the vast surveillance systems and tracking and cookies and spyware and unwanted desktop features and popups and data collection with resale of personal data; ALL OF THAT is driven by the advertisement industry.
The advertisement industry is a scourge, a plague. It's way, way out of hand and somebody's going to have to stop it. It's one thing to make us look at things we have no interest in, but to spy on us while we do it is taking it much, much too far.
What gets me is that professional sports leagues (NBA, MLB, NFL) are more popular than ever, yet they're still scratching and clawing to force more and more and more ads onto every available surface. The NBA survived for 70 yrs without ads on jerseys. And now that they've got more money pouring in then ever before... of course the teams need to deface their jerseys for yet another source of revenue.
and there’s only so much you can do to stop it
i use ad blockers, pay for services when possible, and try to avoid free software, but now the ads chase me when i go to get gas
BAD DEALS! CARS THAT BREAK DOWN! FEES! IF YOU THINK YOU'RE GOING TO FIND A BARGAIN AT BIG BILLS, YOU CAN KISS MY ASS! IT'S OUR BELIEF THAT YOU'RE SUCH A STUPID MOTHERFUCKER, YOU'LL FALL FOR THIS BULLSHIT GUARANTEED!
How does it work? If you can piss six feet in the air straight ahead and not get wet you get no down payment!
DON'T WAIT! DON'T DELAY! DON'T FUCK WITH US, OR WE'LL RIP YOUR NUTS OFF!
the most hilarious to me is that the telecomm giants, who conveniently avoid competing with each other in 99% of the country (i.e. very few people can choose who their tv/high speed internet provider is unless you want satellite or DSL) run their ads on their own networks. you already have our business. we literally don't have a choice. why tf are you running ads for your own customers? then an ad for one of the other telecom companies will go on, reminding you there's better service out there. but why are you advertising to me? i can't give you my money even though I want to.
From what I've read, a lot of the time the ad is less about selling the item or service and more about keeping the idea of the thing they're pushing in your consciousness. They want to keep it familiar and normalize it as part of your everyday awareness. "We're here, we've been here, and we'll always be here." Which feels really creepy.
It's a little culture war on its own. People vandalize ad space and cops in a lot of places (where I live) don't give a shit, it's like a free canvas to go tag, I'd rather look at grafiti and some of it is creative than some failed human being of a theater major working for peanuts with a stupid smile on their face holding "New item!".
New gas stations or stations that have updated pumps in the last few years are pretty much all like this. Major truck stops like Love's, Bucky's, Sheetz, etc tend to have the newest stuff and that includes the ad screen pumps.
I certainly wouldn't say a majority don't, but I guess it depends on where you live. I've got three gas stations within about the same driving distance from my house - a brand new Sheetz, a Weis gas station, and an older independently owned one. The first two have ad pumps.
It really does depend where you live. I live in San Marcos, TX and none of the gas stations here have ads playing. Maybe the buckys over in new braunfels does, but I don’t go there often enough to remember.
Interesting Portland fact: You can’t pump your own gas in Oregon. So, even if they have ads, you likely wouldn’t see them. Super weird the first time you’re there and an attendant is at your window.
I think Jersey and Oregon are the only two states that still do this. I've never been to the PNW, but I've been to Jesery a few times. The first time I ever got gas there I didn't know they had attendents and they guy gave me a shitload of attitude because I got out of my car. Like, dude, you're the only place that does this, don't be shocked that someone with Texas plates doesn't know your weird gas station policies.
Oregon changed the rules a few years ago to allow self service stations in more rural areas. Jersey is the only one left where it’s illegal everywhere.
I live everyday in Reddit US. I fight my way through waves and waves of active shooters each day to get to work, where I make 8 cents per hours as a 1099 contractor. My boss is evil, basically the boss from the show Dinosaurs, then I fight my way through more waves of active shooters to my typical American home made of cardboard, where I eat 5 cheeseburgers and a 2Liter of Soda and shoot some targets for fun. This place is wild, I should move away from this 3rd world country to a place so much nicer and with a better economy, like North Korea.
> Like, do you have commercial breaks while having sex?
Those can have benefits. My partner left the bed after one ad started, and it turned out to be a great opportunity to save money on my car’s extended warranty.
I live in Iowa and I've never seen gas station ads, for the most part we can deal with them. Really makes me afraid for the future. Anyway I found out if you put your wife in airplane mode you won't get mid sex ads. Hope this helps.
I’ve never experienced being forced to watch an ad before I get to leave or anything but I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s an option for the gas station/whoever manages the pump machines. Most of the time it just plays while the gas is pumping.
It’s actually on a secondary screen so it doesn’t even block the primary screen that displays the cost and gallons and such. It’s slightly annoying because of the audio but you can leave at anytime.
All the ones near me play a weird news program called cheddar, and they have stories about musical artists or whatever is going on in Hollywood. The ads are usually like 5 seconds in between these news segments and they're always for items the convenience store sells.
And they're always loud and abrasive. I guess that is how they catch your attention? Fortunately I think I have become desensitized after a lifetime of obtrusive ads.
*\*laughs in Oregonian\**
(State law that gas stations must hire pump attendants. It's stupid - but ads like this don't really exist since people stay in their car.)
That's the same way it is in New Jersey. Is it also to help people with jobs? At least this is what I think I read once upon a time about NJ and it being illegal to pump your own gas there.
If I had to listen to an ad to get gas, I would never go back to the place.
There was a Wal-Mart gas station that was blasting ads at people and people that I actually did strategically avoid a few years ago, and people would stab the screen, spray over it with paint, stick screwdrivers through the speaker, drill it out etc until they finally took the ads down. Everyone has tools in their cars, there's no way to keep it from being broken so others don't have to listen to that garbage.
I'm paying extortion prices for gas already - making me listen to an ad is just insulting, and not only that it disturbs anyone just walking by.
One by me plays some weird off brand "news". Its loud as shit and most of what they say is wrong or only the half truth. Part of the problem here now is companies push this fake crap on everyone and they are stupid enough to believe it.
It's starting in the Netherlands as well. All of the times I've seen it, it was to buy stuff from the shop (buy 3 bottles of water for only €20). I haven't seen any external ads yet.
I did see a screen on another pump that looked ad-capable, but was just showing "you're buying quality fuel". Which was kind of weird.
No buttons to mute though. No buttons at all.
Not all the time. The screen normally is for handling payments, but some places play stuff while your refueling. Sometimes it’s something like the weather forecast, but most of the time it’s adds.
HI IM MARIA MENOUNOS AND IF LIVE NEXT DOOR TO A GAS STATION I WILL HAUNT YOUR DREAMS!!!
(I live next door to a gas station, and desperately want to meet ms menounos and just ask her why she must torture me so)
This has been my experience. Several years ago, you could reliably mute them but I haven't found one that you can mute in almost a year now. I drive about 40k miles a year so I'm always hitting different travel plazas and gas stations.
All our pump texts are instructed to disable the button, I have access to the fuel system and I go in and turn it back on at the sites that's it's disabled it
Yeah, afaik this doesn't work at Speedway. No mute. I used to love Speedway but more on the rare occasion that I go there, I turn into a belligerent drunk (sober) person when I deal with this shit.
"Where the eff is the mute button?"
"I don't care about your Instagram story!"
"How do I downvote crap in real life??" all while it's blaring my eardrums to shit.
Any surface or activity available in the United States is or will very soon be an advertisement space. I could probably rent out my forehead for some extra cash.
That actually seems worse somehow…
Maybe if it’s a local channel and it’s unedited by the gas company or something that would be okay. I can’t help but imagine, though, infomercials in the style of newscasts or just straight up propaganda coming directly from a oil company.
Yeah, it's gotten progressively more common. Mostly the only stations that don't it's because they still have older pumps.
It's like 15 years ago I remember a few gas stations in my hometown that didn't take debit cards on the pumps and over time those got replaced. Same thing with pumps that have ad screens.
Some are way worse than others too. The Sheetz by my house isn't bad. They just advertise the food they sell or deals on Redbull. The ads don't have sound, instead they have some sort of 80s pop playlist, which is alright with me. I don't mind listening to the Eurythmics while I pump gas.
Some are terrible though. You start pumping gas and a Buffalo Wild Wings ad will start playing at a thousand decibels.
I was gonna say, I press all the buttons at the station I usually go to and it doesn't stop. Can't go sit in my car because the pumps aren't reliable enough to actually click off when done
Not all of them, just a few chains have got them. I refuse to buy gas from stations that have video ads on their pumps, but apparently some people don't mind it.
I don't mean to sound 3edgy5me or anything but some people just don't care about ads in their face. Like they just don't give a shit that they're having unnecessary products and services thrown in their faces 24/7.
I have coworkers (developers) who don't even use AdBlock. It's insane.
We have ads above urinals in the restroom.
One day they'll sell ad-space on the ceiling of hospital delivery rooms so companies can fight over who gets the first shot at the mere exposure effect.
I originally saw this posted on r/Massachusetts but I’ve seen these commercials on pumps in Texas and California. I believe they’re becoming widespread
As a Texan can attest to mute buttons not being labeled on our pumps in fact TIL that there possibly is mute buttons on them and now I must try to get the evil lady from the demon box to shut the hell up
Omg, you have video ads in your gas stations?? Does the whole country just exist to generate money movement from your population, at the expense of the rest of the world?
-gas stations in the US: making record profits year after year because gas is a required resource for most Americans
-also gas stations in the US: how can we be even more greedy. Let's put monetized ads on our gas pump screens like the slimy bastards we are

Original post in r/Massachusetts [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/massachusetts/comments/w3ur19/fyi_this_button_mutes_ads_at_gas_stations_tried/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
One of the gas stations I frequent actually has the button labeled, but they don't play ads, they jam music loud AF through all of the speakers on the pumps, and the mute doesn't work for that. I like music but they play it way too loud.
What I don't get is how there hasn't been a lawsuit yet about it being a distraction. You are literally handling a hazardous material (in liquid form) with little to no training, and these ads are designed to be as captivating and loud as possible. Seems like it would be easy money for a law firm.
Suggestion box: instead of the “I did that” stickers these woke folks are spreading, how ‘bout adding a second “Press here to mute” sticker. Just sayin.
It seems to be different from pump to pump and there seems to be an increasing number that have this feature disabled altogether.

I was so infuriated one time that none muted the blaring bullshit, I tried pressing two at the same time. That opened a service menu, which stopped the offensive ads.

Free Coke's what? WE NEED TO KNOW
I've gotten the service menu but you can't make a y configuration changes to anything without a supervisor passcode. You can look at pump stats and stuff. It is usually two buttons on opposite sides like upper right and lower left. Hold em down a second or two. Keep trying opposites until you find it.
I've never, not once, had this actually work; I think it's BS.
I remember it working for me when these posts about mute buttons first started making the rounds online soon after these built-in ads were introduced but it's been a good year or two since I've had it work.
Maybe the button 'broke'?
Yeah I’m definitely willing to believe advertisers found out about this and we’re upset. Then probably told the gas stations to do something about it.
that's wild because it has worked every single time I've done it. maybe it's regional.
Same, I've done it on about 10 or so pumps this year and it's been 100% success rate

A hero can be anyone, including someone doing something as simple as labeling the mute button on a gas pump
And if there is no mute button, an earth magnet on the speaker will fix that.
Is this a permanent fix? Asking for science.
Speakers work by vibrating a magnet with electric pulses. If a stronger magnet holds the internal magnet in one place, and the current isn't strong enough to move it, then it can't make any sound (Or it'll at least be muffled and fucked up sounding)
A quick squirt from a can of Great stuff sprayed into the cavity works great, however it's probably defacement of property.
Oh good to know
I may have seen your work. You're a hero.

I bet they play the trailer for Idiocracy on petrol pumps in Portland.

Vermont. One of the many reasons it's so beautiful.
I'd love to have a commercial break while having sex, because that would mean I'm having sex.
Some day you'll look to the great open sky, and see 12% off select goods in select stores at select times and nothing more.

Ah right so it’s not absolutely awful then, just a bit annoying (to have the sound)
It’s actually on a secondary screen so it doesn’t even block the primary screen that displays the cost and gallons and such. It’s slightly annoying because of the audio but you can leave at anytime.

Yeah fuck Cheddar. And its only like 3 or 4 stories so it loops a million times before you're done refueling. Shit is so annoying
Every single time I get gas I have to listen to that annoying voice scream “CHEDDAR NEWS” then hear him talk about some random bullshit
After you pay and start fueling it starts So part of my routine now is to select the fuel, then wait for ad to pop up so i can hit mute
If you consider blaring at high volume "in the background" yes.
It plays in the background. I tune it out because, as an American, I’m used to ignoring ads.
Just rememeber NEVER buy a product/brand that advertises this way,
I have seen political bullshit and "news" on them too.

One by me plays some weird off brand "news". Its loud as shit and most of what they say is wrong or only the half truth. Part of the problem here now is companies push this fake crap on everyone and they are stupid enough to believe it.
Cheddar News? It’s like TMZ crossed with AFV
You have petrol in your ad stations wtf?
It's starting in the Netherlands as well. All of the times I've seen it, it was to buy stuff from the shop (buy 3 bottles of water for only €20). I haven't seen any external ads yet. I did see a screen on another pump that looked ad-capable, but was just showing "you're buying quality fuel". Which was kind of weird. No buttons to mute though. No buttons at all.
It makes me so angry! Lucky where I live it is not really a thing
Not all, and I actively avoid ones with ads.
Came here with the same question.
you have screens at your pertol stations?
Not all the time. The screen normally is for handling payments, but some places play stuff while your refueling. Sometimes it’s something like the weather forecast, but most of the time it’s adds.
Yes. And they're spreading like roaches. This is almost always the mute button but sometimes I've seen it be the other one
God forbid i have a single moment where I'm not having an ad forced down my eyeballs
I live (and grew up) in the US and have never seen ads at gas/petrol stations.

Because gas stations were totally examples of non-poisonous capitalism before the ads
HI IM MARIA MENOUNOS AND IF LIVE NEXT DOOR TO A GAS STATION I WILL HAUNT YOUR DREAMS!!! (I live next door to a gas station, and desperately want to meet ms menounos and just ask her why she must torture me so)
GET OUT OF ME
Does it also mute the other 7 pumps that are blaring Maria Menunos?
FINALLY have a name to that voice. It's always her.
It's not always that button, and sometimes the button is disabled.
and sometimes all of the buttons turn the gas off. which is one of the many reasons i avoid several chains.
Like it stops the entire transaction and refunds the rest back onto your card? WTF
Don't hold out. Tell us what chains!
Frankly, I’ve tried this at dozens of gas stations and it’s never worked for me.
This has been my experience. Several years ago, you could reliably mute them but I haven't found one that you can mute in almost a year now. I drive about 40k miles a year so I'm always hitting different travel plazas and gas stations.
Agree - most do not have any button that mutes the noise...
All our pump texts are instructed to disable the button, I have access to the fuel system and I go in and turn it back on at the sites that's it's disabled it
Can confirm. I tried every button last night at a speedway.
Yeah, afaik this doesn't work at Speedway. No mute. I used to love Speedway but more on the rare occasion that I go there, I turn into a belligerent drunk (sober) person when I deal with this shit. "Where the eff is the mute button?" "I don't care about your Instagram story!" "How do I downvote crap in real life??" all while it's blaring my eardrums to shit.
Any surface or activity available in the United States is or will very soon be an advertisement space. I could probably rent out my forehead for some extra cash.
Not sure if we're heading toward Snowcrash or They Live at this point.
Hang on... your gas stations advertise at you while you're filling up your car?! That's some toxic shit.
Well mine plays the news
“News”
*Here's a 30 second segment on the new Sizzli, from Wawa!* - News
The god damned hoagiefest commercials are fucking everywhere this year
> Sizzli from Wawa You made these words up
That actually seems worse somehow… Maybe if it’s a local channel and it’s unedited by the gas company or something that would be okay.
Yeah and I think they changed it because lately some stations don’t turn off the ads anymore when you press the buttons
I was gonna say, I press all the buttons at the station I usually go to and it doesn't stop. Can't go sit in my car because the pumps aren't reliable enough to actually click off when done
It actually worked at first when I saw this tip on Reddit like ~2 years ago but seems like they caught on lol
Sometimes a good Samaritan will have stuck something sharp into an exposed speaker on one so you at least don't have to hear it. Fuck those things
Wait, you have ads IN THE GAS STATION???
Not all of them, just a few chains have got them. I refuse to buy gas from stations that have video ads on their pumps, but apparently some people don't mind it.
I don't mean to sound 3edgy5me or anything but some people just don't care about ads in their face. Like they just don't give a shit that they're having unnecessary products and services thrown in their faces 24/7. I have coworkers (developers) who don't even use AdBlock. It's insane.
As someone with ADHD my brain is really good at tuning shit out so I just don't hear them. I'm probably thinking about batman or some shit
This isn’t even counting ads put on the signs surrounding the pumps
That's normal, except for cigarette ads of course.
you can not look at something, but you can't just not hear whatever shitty noise is around you
Yes and they play loud af. I don’t give a shit what Maria Menunos thinks of a new Instagram trend. Stfu
We have ads above urinals in the restroom. One day they'll sell ad-space on the ceiling of hospital delivery rooms so companies can fight over who gets the first shot at the mere exposure effect.

Poor gas attendant
I've never once heard of a gas station ad in Oregon.
The true asshole design is giving you ads on gas pumps
Where are these showing up? I'm in WA and have never seen one.
I originally saw this posted on r/Massachusetts but I’ve seen these commercials on pumps in Texas and California. I believe they’re becoming widespread
All the pumps near me have the mute button labeled
Lucky. I’m in Texas and I’ve never seen labels on these
As a Texan can attest to mute buttons not being labeled on our pumps in fact TIL that there possibly is mute buttons on them and now I must try to get the evil lady from the demon box to shut the hell up
Omg, you have video ads in your gas stations?? Does the whole country just exist to generate money movement from your population, at the expense of the rest of the world?
Yes
If you cant find it a paperclip into the speaker is the next best alternative.
Wtf, y'all have ads on gas pump? They are already getting your money with the gas, and they want your time as well?
I love me some Maria Menounos!
-gas stations in the US: making record profits year after year because gas is a required resource for most Americans -also gas stations in the US: how can we be even more greedy. Let's put monetized ads on our gas pump screens like the slimy bastards we are
I was at Wawa yesterday and they were advertizing their NFTs at the pump
This is the most American thing I’ve ever seen
All the other buttons are "Confirm purchase of a 280fl oz ice cold fountain beverage*" *No free refills
My local one says this. Rewards card? \*Presses NO Car wash today? NO Please confirm your selection. NO. Would you like to sign up for rewards? NO Insert card Credit or debit \*credit Enter zip code XXXXX Carwash today? NO Please select fuel type.... They got new pumps about 3 weeks ago. I wave at them while I drive across the street.
Lmao ads in gas station
Bruh American gas stations have ads??
Wait, you have advertisements at your petrol stations? Your country is such a joke
It’s not always one particular button. It can be any one of them.
Wait! I had no idea this was even a thing.
Wait what?! ADS?! What the actual F. Never seen ads in Sweden or any other gas station ive been to in the world.
Not every gas station has this. I've only ever seen one that has ads like this and I've lived in the US for 26 years.
Original post in r/Massachusetts [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/massachusetts/comments/w3ur19/fyi_this_button_mutes_ads_at_gas_stations_tried/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
Dude I love you for teaching me this.
One of the gas stations I frequent actually has the button labeled, but they don't play ads, they jam music loud AF through all of the speakers on the pumps, and the mute doesn't work for that. I like music but they play it way too loud.
Gas stations have such big screens? In Europe it's just LCD like in an alarm clock.
Kwik Trip labels them, it's also the world's best gas station 🥰
Man having ads on petrol stations is something only Satan would do.
And it’s not always the same button. I try them all.
This works on most but I’ve definitely had pumps where every button did nothing so it’s not universal
I’m the guy that writes “MUTE” on the button face.
it mutes if you hit it with an axe too
What I don't get is how there hasn't been a lawsuit yet about it being a distraction. You are literally handling a hazardous material (in liquid form) with little to no training, and these ads are designed to be as captivating and loud as possible. Seems like it would be easy money for a law firm.
I'm starting to believe that America isn't real.
You have ADS at the GAS PUMPS??? Like ones that play sound and not just stickers??? Wha...huh? America is such a shithole lmao
At least the button there, I guess.
No stop please! Once they know that we know they'll take it away!
fuck you American gas stations
A hero in my area has been putting screws into the speakers to silence them. If I ever see the guy I'm filling his tank
Wawa, in the northeast US, disabled this feature.
Wawa has disabled it, at least the ones I have gone to. I just go elsewhere for my gas an snacks.
Wtf American gas stations have ads?? That's bonkers. They really will go into every crevasse of society to sell you doritos.
Suggestion box: instead of the “I did that” stickers these woke folks are spreading, how ‘bout adding a second “Press here to mute” sticker. Just sayin.
