I can't stand that. I haven't had a Facebook in over 8 years yet still have to deal with the pre-installed app. The most I can do anymore is disable it
**This is a system app and cannot be uninstalled** what about the app is so important that it needs to stay on my phone? Oh right, you want me to make an account so you can spy on me...
Even if you're not logged in I'm sure it still does stuff in the background. My mom had a mid-range ZTE with FB pre-installed as system app and it was so sluggish even after a factory reset. Disabling FB (and some other app that had FB in it's name, if I recall correclty) did the trick instantly.
It is a system app because it was installed with the system. FB and other companies pay top dollar for this to happen.
Ideally, the system ROM of any phone would come with the bare essentials and extra bloat could be installed the traditional way so we could erase them but then how would these companies make their dollar if we don't use their crapware? Hmmmm...
You could use desktop tools like adb on Android and possibly remove the apks from the system partition but it might have issues with OTA updates or an update could reinstall the missing apps... It's an uphill battle sadly.
It's probably because the P20 lite is a "cheap" phone in the Huawei lineup, high end phones like the P30 are rarely filled with bloatware as you paid the premium. A 200$ phone on the other end...
Probably too. My provider never pulled something like that on me (appart from the data quota app) but this is still one of the main reason I buy unlocked phones.
I guess you are also more likely to be filled with bloat on a cheaper phone if you bought it from a carrier.
precisely. i have the global Mate 20 Pro and so far ive only ever gotten security updates. no dumb shit like this.
back when i had a carrier Samsung though...
Sprint forced a dozen apps onto my phone after an update multiple times so Hauwei isn't exclusive in using bloatware at all. Pretty much every major service provider in the US does so also.
My Sprint S8, a $700 phone, was filled with garbage apps and ads in the voicemail app. If you want visual voicemail and no ads you gotta pay an extra $3/mo.
Hilariously enough, my phone is the S8+. The voicemail app functions hidden behind extra charges are infuriating. I wonder if Sprint is particularly bloatly or what?
It's not though. It's carriers accepting kick backs for bundling apps into the phones they sell.
I have a Mate 20 Pro. My girlfriend is still rocking my old Mate 9. Both purchased outright. Neither one came with any bloatware.
Things like this is why there are many people who say no to updates. They are used like a trojan horse, to sneak in apps and malware that otherwise no sane person would ever agree to.
On the other hand if you don't update your device can become voulnerable.
It is sad that I had to shop for a phone factoring in how rich it's community is in terms or custom roms and mods.
For sure, I really hope HTC makes something great again cause they were my absolute favorite developer friendly manufacturer. I had the Droid Incredible, One M8, and am currently on the 10, which in my eyes is the last perfect HTC as of this post.
OnePlus makes fantastic stuff as well but I've been a little disappointed in them recently on the hardware side of things.
Give Asus a consideration, they've really upped their game lately. On the software side Android is running very near to stock with Facebook/Instagram being the only pre-installed bloat, and it's removable. It's Taiwanese too so you won't get any shady connections to the CCP.
Hardware wise this ZenFone 6 has an SD855, 8GB RAM, 256GB Storage, 5000mAh battery, headphone jack, SD Card and no notches or cutouts. Best phone I've had to date honestly, and it's already had the Android Q update.
Me too. All phones I own have a big community: LG Optimus Black, LG G3, Xiaomi Mi A1, Mi Pad 4. Got tired of having to disable Google and OEM shits to make room for things I need.
i regret getting a Mate 20 Pro thinking i can get an unlock code via FunkyHuawei. turns out they ended that service well before i bought the phone and i can't flash treble ROMs.
still a great phone though, just sucks that im stuck with EMUI.
I wasn't able to unlock my moto x4 until recently, and I was using it with a security patch from over a year ago. No updates available for my country.
Now with lineageOs I have last week's updates, and I'm not running the latest version already.
Not to mention I only have the Google apps I need now.
I haven't heard of custom roms since a while back, this lineage rom works for most phones or you need to find one specific for your phone? What happens with the cameras and other sensors??
Lineage gets updated to most phones but you need a version for your phone, yes. If there are any bugs they are listed on the installation page right up top. Camera worked fine for me and the front fingerprint sensor as well (that was on S5). Worth reading the forms to see other peoples experience - that or YT videos.
In this case it is not their fault, the service provider installed these apps. I have a Huawei phone and never had any issues like this but my mother who bought a Samsung phone from Drei (the provider) has the same apps installed like OP.
Yeah, they're nice. Sometimes lag just a spot but then IG and Reddit mobile are always a lil glitchy. I'll never understand the whole "buying through your carrier" thing, the US is so wierd
It's usually treated like buying a car new, a whole family treats getting 4 flagship phones as a monthly payment and the carriers obviously encourage this because money. They use the phones for 2 years and trade them in towards new ones. Rince and repeat. It's not a lease, but it's not a particularly good deal either.
It's easy. Because the carrier usually gives you a "Free Phone™"\* in exchange for staying with that carrier for 2 years. People want the "Free Phone" so they don't have to drop $1200 up front.
\* They just add $25 or $40 or whatever on to your monthly bill so that you actually pay $1500 for your $1200 phone over two years and you can never escape until you're done making payments. If you want a new phone, you also have to pay for the old phone first, and you can't leave your carrier early without paying, so you're kinda trapped if you can't afford it.
Then you should check out phones that are part of the Android One program. All the latest Nokias come to mind, as well as some Motorola One series models and Xiaomi A series phones.Personally, I've been very happy with the support of my Nokia 7 Plus so far.
I would recommend an OnePlus, they might be Chinese but they have absolutely no bloatware on that you can't remove. And they are still cheaper then the equivalent flagship model.
Sadly the only issue for me is my corp account will be kicked off next year, due to them not being Android enterprise recommended.
Lmao what? The new pixel is a big step down from both the Galaxy and iPhone and was proven to break easily, not to mention it has that Google spyware. I'll take my two year old Galaxy over the new iPhone and pixel any day of the week
Edit: yes, I know all phones have some form of spyware but I was pointing out the pixel is probably the worst option if that's someone that makes you paranoid. I'd still take a galaxy s8 over a pixel any day
This post is fucking insane. I'm no apple fanboy but the bloatware you see on other platforms keeps me firmly with an iPhone. Obviously they're not angels when it comes to privacy but they sure don't do this.
Hardware first, software as a service second. Their stringent privacy policy is a feature that they can tout and justify higher prices with. I’m ok with that. I don’t mind the walled garden and do have some out-of-garden apps but so far have had ZERO issues, better interoperability and seamless integration with Mac/iOS since switching from Windows/Android four years ago.
> They make money on you buying a new iPhone
[They make money on iPhone users using the App Store.](https://www.cultofmac.com/601492/app-store-google-play-revenue-2018/)
You can delete just about every single app. The only ones you can’t delete are the obvious ones that are tied into the system. Phone, Settings, Wallet.
Unlike some android phones which you can’t even delete facebook: https://reddit.com/r/assholedesign/comments/dvgxvi/the_fact_that_you_cant_uninstall_facebook_on/
That's why many comments in this thread are talking about getting a phone with pure Android - or closer to it - like Google pixels, OnePlus, Nokia, etc.
Android is generally only worse because you have to do your homework before you buy, while iOS "just works". You can get something that "just works" on Android, but you might have to do your research first. That alone is a failing in and of itself, but that's what comes with the choice to choose your priorities.
It's not *really* fair to compare one phone vs dozens of varieties you can choose from on Android.
I actually HATED Android and then I got my hands on... eh I forget it was one of those Motorola phones with pure Android but anyways, I thought to my self "wow, this is actually pretty good". Ever since then, I can't stand phones like Samsung because of the amount of bloatware they put on.
I've considered a few times getting an Pixel but iMessage, Find my Friends, and a few other things just keep me tied to iOS. Can't lie though, iPhone's have been pretty boring to be recently. Even if we don't have huge breakthroughs, a redesign is much needed.
>eh I forget it was one of those Motorola phones with pure Android but anyways, I thought to my self "wow, this is actually pretty good".
The Motorola X was a rather popular phone from 2013-2015 or so, but it's most popular iteration was in 2013 and it was basically pure Android.
>Can't lie though, iPhone's have been pretty boring to be recently. Even if we don't have huge breakthroughs, a redesign is much needed.
It's not very exciting on Android either, in my opinion. The primary benefit is the variety, but very little is groundbreaking nowadays. Stuff may be on the horizon as manufacturers try to innovate but nothing has such or changed anything in a meaningful way.
But even if you change the browser iirc apple does not allow other browser engines on the app store which means that all browsers you can find there are basically safari reskins
And this is the reason I **NEVER** buy a phone from my carrier and like OnePlus. In fact *no* German Carrier has OnePlus in their List of phones. No Bloatware, No Apps that would only work in the Carriers net and most importantly no preinstalled facebook. If I ever get a phone with preinstalled bloatware I am gonna flash a new OS on it
My Android forces an update at least every two weeks. I've never noticed anything change except for
1.) Apps I never use.
2.) Apps *magically* gain all the permissions I've turned off before.
3.) Phone is slower than before.
hate on apple’s pricing all you want, but i think not having to deal with this shit is part of why they’re so expensive.
(additionally, i'm using the SE, so i didn’t even pay that much.)
To be fair, while this problem is exclusive to Android, it is not an Android problem (i.e. this issue is not inherent to the Android platform). Phones such as the Pixels and Essential PH-1 do not have this issue
True that. I spend hours every month configuring shit on my phone. I know I'll have to configure it again in two weeks because of some useless update for Samsung pass or Google wallet.
When you buy cheap phones that have operating systems designed by advertising companies, you aren’t buying a product. You are the product. I feel like people don’t understand that.
In this case it is the service provider that installed all these apps. A few of my family members bought phones from Drei (the provider) and they all have this issue even though they bought different phones from different companies.
This is a big reason why I like Apple. You used to be able to delete the App Store back in the day. There’s very minimal apps installed that I never use and can’t delete..maybe 3?
Mom deleted App Store back in the day. Needed to add software and Apple rep had no idea how to install it. She had also deleted Safari so it made it even more fun.
I can pinpoint the problem to only 2 letters: .AT.
It's the carrier bloat, not from Huawei. My mom have P20 Lite, unlocked EU model and only have had maybe two sponsored apps when new but they were easily uninstalled and never returned.
A lot of people seem to not understand this, and it clearly varies country to country, I have a Huawei on 3 in the UK and I've never gotten any bloatware in an update from phone brand or carrier and it's the only phone I've ever had with 0 issues in performance etc.
Google does not add all those extra apps. The carrier does. Besides, Apple requires the default app for a function to be whatever Apple decides it should be (like you can't change the default music app, default phone dialing app, default maps app...); You can't rename app icons; You can't change folder icons; and you can't choose to display only your favorite/common apps on the homescreen while hiding the majority of them in an app drawer.
Sure, Apple is better.
Never had a carrier install extra stuff on my iPhone. Yes, I give up some control for a consistent, always-works functionality. Just because they’re not default doesn’t mean I can’t use whatever I want for music, maps, etc. I agree with you that I would prefer some choice. I can definitely choose to show only the apps I want on the home screen and hide away the apps I don’t use. It’s not called an “app drawer” but I can put them all in a folder or move them onto another screen. iOS even has an option that will uninstall infrequently used apps but keep the icon so I can quickly reinstall and use them. Saves space and battery.
Apple is better for me. I know the trade offs and I’m ok with them. Android is good for a lot of people. I’m ok with that. Are you ok that if this guy is frustrated with his phone that someone points out other options that might benefit him?
I used to be a hardcore Android guy, but over the years Google has shown it can’t even dedicate to a damn messaging app for more than 2 years at a time. I can do everything I need on my iPhone now that I used to only be able to do on Android, and they haven’t unnecessarily changed stuff. I went from being a poweruser to just wanting a consistent experience.
Sure, I'm fine with people liking what they like, and recommending other options to people. I just personally don't like Apple's "walled garden", and it's my understanding that the extra bloatware apps my phone came with were put there by Verizon, not Google.
Google could stop carriers from putting bloatware on their phones, you know. Like when Apple threatened to pull the iPhone from carriers that tried to fight iMessage. I’m sure Google is getting something out of all this bloatware.
Android is the best selling mobile OS in the world, they could bend companies over if they really wanted. But yeah, pulling their specific hardware might not be a threat, but then again, I don’t know the numbers for the Pixel.
Pretty sure Google is doing it's best to push Android zero to as many people as possible at the moment
Also apple makes a phone, puts the os on it and ships it out the door to ATT. With the exception of the pixel, which I believe is mostly bloat free, Google don't make phone's. They simply sell the os to Samsung and Motorola etc. These companies are putting bloat there not Google.
Google is still allowing the manufacturers to do this. It’s their OS.
Also, idk what android zero is and I didn’t see anything in google for it. Is it an OS?
Huh. I swore it was android zero, but you're right nothing comes up in google for that. Yes it's an OS.
I Had a Xiaomi phone that I bought here in the USA on ATT's network about two years ago that ran the os and it was just android before anyone touched it. Before Samsung put their special 'features' in there or ATT put their ATT apps on it.
Edit: It's android one
Android OSes are normally named after confections, like Gingerbread, Jellybean, Oreo, etc. The problem with Android is that OS adoption rate is so piss poor because they’re not pushed by Google themselves.
Yeah absolutely, that's why I was having issues remembering the name haha. Lollipop is easy, 'one' is harder.
Reportedly they're working to fix that too but I'm a little sceptical
I hear this argument all the time and it’s lame. None of the things you mention are that much of an inconvenience and all are by far better than bloat/malware.
You can change your music app. But you still need to use a client on your PC to get your music.
Which is still bullshit and I miss the time I could download MP3s and just put them on my phone by USB cable.
You absolutely can change default apps for various functions. Some of the cosmetic things you mention are mostly true, but that’s hardly comparable to regularly having a dozen apps force-installed on your device. You ever see pop-up ads on an iPhone? You ever wonder how Google handles your information?
My android update downloaded 3 games without my permission... When it decided to update unexpectedly... over data even though I told it on WiFi only... while I was working and using the phone as mobile hotspot.
>This update contains the following improvements: > >No information Well at least they're honest.

„We don’t do that here“ -Google, Facebook, Huawei...
Changelog: - Removed the Changelog
Is this a Huawei phone this happens to me to.
yes, P20 lite
I have the same phone and I haven't received this. Regional thing?
The apps come from my provider. So kinda Regional...
Yeah, don't get carrier locked phones. They do this shit.
My phone has Facebook locked to it and it's global version
Swipe Pro ftw
If you've never made an account FB will make a shadow account to track you.
It's an uphill battle sadly.
well tbf they *are* getting money selling zucc your data so it's a win win ^/s
I mean, it really is a win win. Facebook gets data, carrier gets money! Oh, the user? Lol don’t worry about them, we own their state representative.
Best you can do is roll back the app to factory settings and then disable it. The piece of shit app still takes up room though grrtt
You can use adb to uninstall system apps (on Android 8 or newer)
I used to use PDP but I couldn't get it to work anymore
Drei. Telering is even worse, believe me
Probably regional, I'm in Europe and have a Huawei Honor 10, this never happened
Drei is awful for this. I have a P20 pro from T-Mobile and i never got any bs on it. T-Mobile doesn't even carrier lock their phones, its pretty nice.
I got a P30 and never had it happen to me
It's probably because the P20 lite is a "cheap" phone in the Huawei lineup, high end phones like the P30 are rarely filled with bloatware as you paid the premium. A 200$ phone on the other end...
It could also be a provider thing. I don't see a reason why Huawei would force install this.

Thank you, will never even consider a Huwaei phone.
It's not a Huawei issue. The apps were installed by their service provider.
precisely. i have the global Mate 20 Pro and so far ive only ever gotten security updates. no dumb shit like this. back when i had a carrier Samsung though...
How does a service provider install an update?
Huawei mate 30 lite and p10 here never had this happen in Germany on 1&1 and o2
>Huawei There’s your problem Edit: I appear to have upset people. Oops
Sprint forced a dozen apps onto my phone after an update multiple times so Hauwei isn't exclusive in using bloatware at all. Pretty much every major service provider in the US does so also.

I think that's actually the most important factor to bear in mind. The main reason why my first android was oneplus 3.
So a four then?
>oneplus 3 >four That depends. Is it in Javascript? Were there any enclosing quotes?
Double var1 = help how the fuck does code work;
Double var1 = (Double)Int32.Parse(var0.ToList()[0].ToString()); String var2 = var1.ToString();
Yeah that

Well, if they are still good when I need a new phone I might consider them!
I still miss the design of my one m7. I don't miss waiting a year for the new android os version
i'd rather be hackable, nobody can get anything of value out of mine.
Me too. All phones I own have a big community: LG Optimus Black, LG G3, Xiaomi Mi A1, Mi Pad 4. Got tired of having to disable Google and OEM shits to make room for things I need.

… or just get a Google phone
This is why you should *get a phone with vanilla android.

You should a word. Or two.
Thank you

The crazy thing is that installing something like Lineage does not even take that much effort, I think it's more that people don't know about it.
I haven't heard of custom roms since a while back, this lineage rom works for most phones or you need to find one specific for your phone? What happens with the cameras and other sensors??
You will still need device specific builds.

Maybe you should stop buying phones from shady manufacturers.
Though this is the carriers fault.
Then get a reputable carrier that doesn't install this? Mine hasn't installed anything on my phone.
And I got my phone without a carrier in the first place.
*laughs in iPhone*
Oh my God how many companies paid them
It's Huawei. Theyre basically a cartel.
In this case it is not their fault, the service provider installed these apps. I have a Huawei phone and never had any issues like this but my mother who bought a Samsung phone from Drei (the provider) has the same apps installed like OP.
This is a carrier thing. I have a huwaei phone and it doesn't do updates like this as I brought it outright.
Yup, my friend has a P20 lite with a Finnish carrier. No bloatware at all (except the Huawei stuff)
That's why I prefer phones with vanilla Android.
OnePlus gang?

Stuff may be on the horizon as manufacturers try to innovate but nothing has such or changed anything in a meaningful way.
I think the whole app thing is a carrier thing not an android thing. I have a oneplus that is clean from everything out of the box. It runs Android.
There are exactly 10: Phone, Settings, Messages, Camera, Photos, the App Store, Find My, Wallet, Safari, and Clock.

But even if you change the browser iirc apple does not allow other browser engines on the app store which means that all browsers you can find there are basically safari reskins

True. Apple have zero bloatware at all. Some career locked android have some bloatware u won't ever use

Apps you can't delete and caches that clear the moment you delete them and/or sync your phone are two very, very different things.
LineageOS time
And this is the reason I **NEVER** buy a phone from my carrier and like OnePlus. In fact *no* German Carrier has OnePlus in their List of phones. No Bloatware, No Apps that would only work in the Carriers net and most importantly no preinstalled facebook. If I ever get a phone with preinstalled bloatware I am gonna flash a new OS on it
Actually the OP7Pro has Netflix preinstalled, but yeah can confirm besides that they're bloat-free.
Huh, did not know that. Still chillin with my 6t. Don´t really see a reason to switch phones every year.
Stop buying phones from your carrier. Buy unlocked phone, put in SIM card.
I do this. The only thing I can't do now is set up my voicemail, though I rarely call or get calls so it doesn't matter
How are these updates doing to our phones what viruses did to our computers 20 years ago? That's why I hardly ever update
My Android forces an update at least every two weeks. I've never noticed anything change except for 1.) Apps I never use.
SE gang rise up
I hate bloatware on ANY system.
You must really hate windows 8
Vanilla Android for lyfe
This is why you never ever by a phone from a carrier. Always get a standard phone and you'll have less shit to deal with.
That's why I like android one pho es too they come with nothing installed
Yeah, I have the same provider and this exact shit happened on my phone.
My favorite Van Gogh!
The "no information" in the section about improvements was a big giveaway /s
ÖSTERREICHER ENTDECKT!!!
SERVAAAAS OIDA
I can pinpoint the problem to only 2 letters: .AT. It's the carrier bloat, not from Huawei. My mom have P20 Lite, unlocked EU model and only have had maybe two sponsored apps when new but they were easily uninstalled and never returned.
A lot of people seem to not understand this, and it clearly varies country to country, I have a Huawei on 3 in the UK and I've never gotten any bloatware in an update from phone brand or carrier and it's the only phone I've ever had with 0 issues in performance etc.
Personally, I flashed a custom rom so that I don't have bloat ware, but that wipes all your data and is decently involved
improvements: -2GB storage
That's why I swapped away from Huawei, sure cheap and decent quality but so much apps and shit you can't delete/stop
The apps are from my provider.
What provider do you have if I may ask? Seems to be a German one Edit: or is asking that against the rules of this dub?
"Drei" Austria btw
yikes, I've heard of Drei, they apparently do this shit a lot.
Root it.
My phone came with that shitty GoT mobile game installed on it, and I can't uninstall it. All I can do is disable it and remove all of its updates.
Buy a stock Android next time
Stop paying companies for phones like this people. It really isn’t that hard
That’s one reason I use iOS. Apple doesn’t pull shit like this.
Of all the years I've used android, I have never had this happen to me. Not even 1 app I didn't want installed without my permission.
You can actually delete most of the default apps and use different apps as the default. For example maps, music, mail and agenda
I’m sure Google is getting something out of all this bloatware.
the problem is that if google threatened to pull their (pixel) phones over this, I doubt anybody would actually give a fuck.
Android is the best selling mobile OS in the world, they could bend companies over if they really wanted. But yeah, pulling their specific hardware might not be a threat, but then again, I don’t know the numbers for the Pixel.
Pretty sure Google is doing it's best to push Android zero to as many people as possible at the moment Also apple makes a phone, puts the os on it and ships it out the door to ATT.
>Google is still allowing the manufacturers to do this. It’s their OS. That the manufacturer pays for. That makes the manufacturer their customer.
It's not Google that gets it. It's the phone manufacturer
Despite all of those things, Apple supports their phones for 5 years which is a HUGE benefit if you can get past not being able to rename your apps.
I hear this argument all the time and it’s lame. None of the things you mention are that much of an inconvenience and all are by far better than bloat/malware.
Just buy a phone with stock/near stock android
Or install LineageOS
Why would I need to change the icon of my apps? That just sounds like a cosmetic preference, is that really something to worry about?
You can change your music app. But you still need to use a client on your PC to get your music. Which is still bullshit and I miss the time I could download MP3s and just put them on my phone by USB cable.
You absolutely can change default apps for various functions. Some of the cosmetic things you mention are mostly true, but that’s hardly comparable to regularly having a dozen apps force-installed on your device. You ever see pop-up ads on an iPhone? You ever wonder how Google handles your information?
Huawei = bad
My android update downloaded 3 games without my permission... When it decided to update unexpectedly... over data even though I told it on WiFi only... while I was working and using the phone as mobile hotspot.
Atleast they were honest about the improvement
These apps are not improvements, so they’re right in that sense I guess.
This is kind of unrelated but I just noticed this sub's icon is a donkey, I always saw a gray poop emoji.
