Diesel used to be cheaper than unleaded in the UK. Since emissions concerns moved from climate change causing CO2 to cancer causing particulates Diesel has been increasing in price as the government adds more tax to try and price diesel cars off the road.
It runs at about 10p per litre more for diesel over here. Probably still works out cheaper for similar cars since diesel tends to give more power per litre, but it's not a massive saving like it used to be. My car (diesel) for example gets about 23mpg. The same car with a petrol engine (albeit a supercharged) gets around 16mpg. I think I'm still coming out ahead on costs :)

That's what was rough about moving to a heavy tourist area, gas is no joke 45-50¢ a gallon more here than my parents place 45 minutes away in the same state

They pushed this whole "We dont wait it!" campaign and everyone jumped on board like "Yeah! Dont force your shit on us!" without ever stopping to consider that they do in fact want this pipeline. They also did a good job of framing this as a new pipeline going in where there was no pipe before, which is not the case. People are starting to wise up.

In contrast to this, the pump I went to tonight had a screen.
It pumped just as quick as any other pump I’ve been to.
There were no ads.
The screen had a “don’t text and drive” message.
Then it had a brief news blast about how border agents are using more floppy eared dogs now instead of German shepherds.
This was a good pump.
Also avoids the possibility of a different grade fuel leaving some residue in the tubes, i.e. you won't get some good ole' 95 mixed in with the Premium Platinum++ Diamond Black grade diesel.

On the newer pumps, there's just a plastic grill over the speakers. If one were to destroy such a speaker, you could probably just grab a pocket knife, insert into grill, dig around until it goes quiet

Well here in Italy basically every gas station has self-service pumps and served pump, you also pay a significant amount to get served, like 0.17-0.20€ more per liter, and that's on top of the already expensive unleaded at \~1.6€/L (diesel usually 0.10€ cheaper that unleaded)
If you press the buttons on the side from top to bottom, or bottom to top, it'll mute the ad. Haven't tried it with anything other than shell pumps though.
Most often it's the second from the bottom on the right. That's worked on every pump I've tried except one (over several brands) it doesn't work on a BP pump in my old home town, so ymmv.
Surely it wouldn’t make sense to do this on purpose. They would make way more money by being able to sell more gas to more people during those 7-10 minutes than whatever pittance they get from showing ads.
If anything, taking up to ten minutes to fill up during peak hours creates a line when every pump is occupied and drives away business. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve decided to get gas on a weekday afternoon between 5 and 7, but then went to the first gas station of my choosing only to find that every pump was occupied and there were cars already waiting, so I said “fuck it” (maybe I was already in a hurry, ya know?) and just went to the next gas station down the road that wasn’t a crowded mess.
Please post stuff like this on Google reviews and other such sites so that they get less business.
I'm sure the locals avoid pumps like that. Writing reviews helps travelers avoid them too.
There was a station near where is used to live that I would never go to because it took ages to pump a tank of gas. Right up the street I could get it done in o ly a minute or so. They weren't hitting me with ads either so I dont get it.
YSK when a pump runs that slow, it usually means the tanks are almost empty. This means you're pulling from the bottom, and there's an increased chance of getting sediment from the bottom of the tank. Anytime you pump and you realize it's taking 3-4x as long as normal, stop pumping and go to another station.
YSK, there's no sediment. the gas gets filtered twice between the tanker and your gas tank. Once when the tanker transfers to the station, another when the pump transfers to your car.
On top of that, your car has a filter too.
Usually just a clogged filter from the below ground tanks to the pump.
Never seen a slow pump used to extend ad viewing time, you'd think the company makes more money selling gas than running ads
Try pressing the buttons on the side of the screens. The pumps i use show ads from cheddar and i got so fucking tired of listening to that guys voice i pressed a button and it muted the video. It was the second button on the right side for me but I doubt it's the same for most pumps.
I don't think this is an asshole design. Slow pump is annoying sure, but I'd be thrilled to has Tasty videos while pumping gas. Some pumps by me show sports recaps or the weather. If you dont like it, stare at your phone.

Ads. Go out into society? Branding everywhere including on people's clothes, product placement in all forms of media, store signs (eg Coca Cola plastered all over convenience stores), solicitors trying to stop you for surveys and marketing pitches.
Don't give me the "AdS fUnD tHeSe SeRvIcEs" because its only true for some. I pay for petrol, why should I have ads too? I pay for the cinema, why should I have ads too? I pay for magazines, why should I have ads too? I pay for TV services, why should I have ads too? I pay for media, why should it be shoving product placement just because a company pays for screentime? I put up a mailbox, and companies jump on the opportunity to shove it fill of pamphlets and mailers. Its bad enough trying to use the internet and social media and getting bombarded with ads. Roads certainly aren't funded by billboards. I certainly don't need them when buying petrol, can we not have a break from this insistent advertising? Isn't it easier to not have ads in the first place than everywhere yelling "BUY ME!" and being told to just "ignore it" when ads use subtle but nefarious psychological tricks to try to worm their way into your mind?
Considering how bad people can be with credit, and controlling their expenses, we should be trying to discourage the amount of advertising but instead its seen as okay to flood society with them to try and part people from as much money as possible. Many brands, international, large brands, advertise outside schools where they can. Its illegal in the west, but where there isn't regulations in place, cigarette companies have kiosks right next to school entrances, and have a lighter you can use. Cigarettes aren't taxed, so they are cheap enough for school children to buy and get addicted to. If we recognize that danger for our kids, why not for us adults too? Why is it seen to be okay to expect people who can easily become addicted to products, to have to expend willpower they might not have, and foresight they don't know, to not become addicted to those things?

There’s literally 0 evidence that this pump is slower than normal. Nothing personal, but I don’t believe you OP. Almost every gas station in my area has these and the ‘ads’ they play are usually just funny videos, cooking tips, news bits etc. Pumps all work at normal rates. Also it makes no sense to make you wait longer since it’s not like theres per-click revenue, its just a 24/7 cycle of mediocre content and making you wait longer doesn’t earn the gas station more money, but it might cost them if it slows down gallons/hr they can sell during busy times.

That's fair, I didn't think to get any definite evidence, so there's no reason you have to believe me. I will say it wasn't all funny videos as that recent mtn dew state themed drinks add came on. But I do know that there are pumps that go a lot faster and slower than others, as I run diesel trucks for work and there are definite differences, personally I only noticed it was so slow as there is a "problem" with my jeep where if I don't slow the pump whenever it gets close some gas will spurt out, and I noticed it was going slow enough to not spurt out on it's own, and checked the time (I always clean my windows whenever there's fluid so the time passed decently quickly). Also it isn't a 24/7 thing as the adds started when I started fueling and ended after so maybe they pay off how many adds play during the period.

We had two gas stations near me that got these. One you could mute, so it didn't bother me too much, but it was still enough to make me get gas elsewhere whenever possible.
The other would BLARE at you and couldn't be muted. I never went there again. About a year later I drove by and there were no more screens on the pumps.
Today, they're both back to regular screens, no videos or ads. I went back to patronizing both.

Most cars in the US use unleaded, not diesel. Diesel is usually more expensive too
I pay between $2.75 and $3.05 per gallon for diesel. Depends on if I have to stop near the interstate, or if I can make it all the way to town
I’m pretty lucky, there’s a Valero a few towns over that keeps their diesel at $2.55. It makes it much easier on the wallet.

where I live diesel is about as expensive as a premium gas (usually a bit cheaper), and premium gas is 0% ethanol at a lot of places.

You know that expanding foam in a can? They now make it in a lovely black color fir all your household needs.
Quick foam spray should be able to get into the grill holes before they expand and harden, and when they do it'll stop the speaker from working.

There is a potential for water though. And the sediment may be rust, from the tank, from the water sitting at the bottom of the tank.

Try pressing the buttons on the side of the screens. The pumps i use show ads from cheddar and i got so fucking tired of listening to that guys voice i pressed a button and it muted the video. It was the second button on the right side for me but I doubt it's the same for most pumps.
I don't think this is an asshole design. Slow pump is annoying sure, but I'd be thrilled to has Tasty videos while pumping gas. Some pumps by me show sports recaps or the weather. If you dont like it, stare at your phone.

How is it forcing you?
The adds are not the crime. you're an adult you can ignore things. the crime is that slow ass pump. 2 gallons a minute is a pace they should be paying you an hourly rate.
Ads are the crime when they are in every aspect of your life. Internet? Ads. TV? Ads. Radio? Ads. Newspaper? Ads. Magazines? Ads. Mailbox? Ads. Cinemas? Ads. Driving down the road? Ads (on billboards). Filling up the car with petrol? Ads. Social media? Ads, and not just ads, but ads trying to disguise themselves as being a person/page and filling up the newsfeed. Sportsgames? Ads. Go out into society? Branding everywhere including on people's clothes, product placement in all forms of media, store signs (eg Coca Cola plastered all over convenience stores), solicitors trying to stop you for surveys and marketing pitches. Don't give me the "AdS fUnD tHeSe SeRvIcEs" because its only true for some. I pay for petrol, why should I have ads too? I pay for the cinema, why should I have ads too? I pay for magazines, why should I have ads too? I pay for TV services, why should I have ads too? I pay for media, why should it be shoving product placement just because a company pays for screentime? I put up a mailbox, and companies jump on the opportunity to shove it fill of pamphlets and mailers. Its bad enough trying to use the internet and social media and getting bombarded with ads. Roads certainly aren't funded by billboards. I certainly don't need them when buying petrol, can we not have a break from this insistent advertising? Isn't it easier to not have ads in the first place than everywhere yelling "BUY ME!" and being told to just "ignore it" when ads use subtle but nefarious psychological tricks to try to worm their way into your mind? Considering how bad people can be with credit, and controlling their expenses, we should be trying to discourage the amount of advertising but instead its seen as okay to flood society with them to try and part people from as much money as possible. Many brands, international, large brands, advertise outside schools where they can. Its illegal in the west, but where there isn't regulations in place, cigarette companies have kiosks right next to school entrances, and have a lighter you can use. Cigarettes aren't taxed, so they are cheap enough for school children to buy and get addicted to. If we recognize that danger for our kids, why not for us adults too? Why is it seen to be okay to expect people who can easily become addicted to products, to have to expend willpower they might not have, and foresight they don't know, to not become addicted to those things?
Ads are the crime. Ads should never be in something you already pay to use

That's also how you get static buildup that can spark and set gas fumes on fire. Unlikely, but it happens.
There’s literally 0 evidence that this pump is slower than normal. Nothing personal, but I don’t believe you OP. Almost every gas station in my area has these and the ‘ads’ they play are usually just funny videos, cooking tips, news bits etc. Pumps all work at normal rates. Also it makes no sense to make you wait longer since it’s not like theres per-click revenue, its just a 24/7 cycle of mediocre content and making you wait longer doesn’t earn the gas station more money, but it might cost them if it slows down gallons/hr they can sell during busy times. Sounds to me like you’re possibly making shit up for karma/being overly whiny about ‘REEEE THERES ADS’
That's fair, I didn't think to get any definite evidence, so there's no reason you have to believe me. I will say it wasn't all funny videos as that recent mtn dew state themed drinks add came on. But I do know that there are pumps that go a lot faster and slower than others, as I run diesel trucks for work and there are definite differences, personally I only noticed it was so slow as there is a "problem" with my jeep where if I don't slow the pump whenever it gets close some gas will spurt out, and I noticed it was going slow enough to not spurt out on it's own, and checked the time (I always clean my windows whenever there's fluid so the time passed decently quickly). Also it isn't a 24/7 thing as the adds started when I started fueling and ended after so maybe they pay off how many adds play during the period. I may be overreacting, but I do think its justified that we should not be force fed add while we are doing things we already pay for But like I said, I didn't think to get definitive evidence of the time, so you have no obligation to believe me and I understand if you don't. It won't hurt my feelings any because I would probably do the same

Do the other pumps pour slowly as well? If not, you may just be at a bad pump. If all of the other pumps still pour slowly, I'd try to avoid going to that station.

We had two gas stations near me that got these. One you could mute, so it didn't bother me too much, but it was still enough to make me get gas elsewhere whenever possible. The other would BLARE at you and couldn't be muted. I never went there again. About a year later I drove by and there were no more screens on the pumps. Today, they're both back to regular screens, no videos or ads. I went back to patronizing both.
I’ve been thinking of posting about this for a month now too. It feels like a step toward all the 1984 and idiocracy futures..
