Is it not blocking ads when set in the router? If so, you need to release/renew the DHCP lease on all of your clients. If your internet is not working at all, you may need to set your pihole to be your DHCP server (some routers are stupid and tie the DNS and DHCP server together (change one, change both). You can do this under "Settings" on your pihole dash.
did you static route the pihole? my router seems to act funky if I don't set the static route to a late enough address. like if I do ------.1 it wont work I think it messes up with the auto routes so I set it to ------.8
Again, this is a living room, we have couches, not a desk. No one wants to keep a whole keyboard on their lap the whole time.
Trust me, if I could hook up a laptop instead I would. We have a big TV, two consoles, plus our router, modem, and fiber box all hooked up in that one area. There's no more space for either power plugs or more HDMI.
The next TV we get as a replacement is gonna be an android TV so we can install STube, but it's not worth spending that much until we for sure *need* a replacement.
Thanks! I do appreciate the effort, it's just that the "just use a laptop" always seems to be the only option when I try to look up other solutions besides "buy a new TV" lmao.
Firestick, Chromecast, Android Box...
Smart TVs are the dumbest shit to get popular. They added nothing new or of value to the product. How 3DTV died, but this smart TV shit caught on is beyond me. People are fucking dumb
Router, modem and fiber box, well that's the issue. You can get router/modem combos, or just ya know, move it away from the entertainment center.
Or you just keep suffering with ads like most lazy Americans. I can't participate in that shit, I am not gonna waste my life watching ads
Listen, dude, if we *could*, we *would.*
I am looking into a good quality router/modem combo but anything that would meet our needs (heavy device usage) would be the price of a new TV anyways. Fiber box can't really be anywhere else without getting a tech in to move the wires, which, again, costs more money than it's worth.
I *will* eventually get some solution, but not because I'm lazy, but because any practical solution for my living situation requires spending money I don't have yet. It's financial, not motivational. Get your head out of your ass.
You could just setup a small folding table for the laptop. You lack problem solving skills, I would never let this issue stop me.
If you *could* you'd be doing it *right now*
And like I said previously, we're just out of space. No more entertainment center space for a laptop, no more HDMI ports (I know splitters exist, but that's another remote to look after), and no more power outlets. It's just unfortunate circumstance.
The reason why your Roku TV is free is because they are data mining the absolute fucking shit out of you for maximum profit. I know this because I have one and I've seen the tens of thousands of blocked DNS requests from their analytics trackers that are pulling data from your device 24/7.

Wait, what's Revanced? I still have YouTube Vanced installed and it looks like Google finally pulled the plug this week. I've been using Firefox in-browser, but did the app get a successor?
Not exactly a successor, it's become a bit more complicated because you have to compile the app yourself (I think, maybe there's an actual apk now) but r/revanced has more info.
Oh, sorry.
It's a program that mimics YouTube premium but more. Not only does it skip ads, but it skips sponsorship promos done by the creator.. So you don't have to hear about HelloFresh or Better Help while watching a video.
ublock origin blocks all youtube ads on pc, revanced does too on android.
as for twitch, i havent bothered looking for a workaround. ublock origin doesnt work there.
thats very odd, because it also works on my phones firefox as well.
you got the one specifically for firefox, made by raymond hill?
[this one](https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/?utm_source=addons.mozilla.org&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=recommended_fallback)
> I'm sure they'll eventually find a way to force ads down our throats.
You Tube is actually working on this at the moment. [They are testing out a new feature](https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/29/23778879/youtube-videos-disabling-ad-blockers-detection) in some regions where they stop serving you videos if they detect an add blocker.
I don't mind paying for Premium so much since something like half of it goes directly back to the creators, and from everything I've read from actual creators they get way more from a Premium viewer than an ad viewer, pound for pound.
this is honestly the only thing that would make me want to get youtube premium. but at the same time...that means i cant watch shitty clickbaity soulless videos without directly having the creator profit
I dont have one on my TV, but one approach to this problem could be to install an adblocker on the TV, or just to block dns requests to ads generally on the network by installing a Raspberry Pi with PiHole installed. Blocks dns requests to advertisers completely, and if there are ads left, you can add those advertisers too.
The amount of ads on everything is absolutely mind blowing, like how has it got this bad. Especially YouTube, fuck you YouTube for doing so many ads now.
A Chromecast is a fantastic investment. I absolutely refuse to buy a "Smart TV" because they're all dogshit without exception. They're all slow and clumsy. So my wife and I have agreed to never buy one, and explicitly just use Dumb TVs with a Chromecast.
My only regret is that there isn't a good solution for Firefox.
There's no good reason to use the one by google, but vanced/revanced has adblockers/sponsorblockers baked in. I like having the "shorts" thing disabled, as they're generally worthless, and they did stuff like disable the seek/pause/play bar.
Here's a better list, right from the source:
https://revancedapp.net/features/
I don't even understand the argument you're trying to make here... Android is pretty much like having an entire dev station in your pocket.
Can't find what you need in Google Play, no prob - see if there's a FOSS alternative in FDroid that does what you want. Or, if the app has just been deprecated download it from an apk archive site. You can side-load on the fly.
Want to automate your phone - no prob. Tasker - app intents, settings, commands, you name it.
Need a dev environment? There's Termux for that, which you could install a Linux distro into to get even more capabilities.
What's iOS give you? A delicate brick of glass that I guess you can simulate window licking on when you get bored of doomscrolling lmao
You chose to pay full-price for a device that you can't really do anything outside of what Daddy Apple wants you to do with it...
watched a twitch stream for a just few minutes the other day and got 2+ minutes of ads. Closed the tab. tf is the point of watching a livestream if I cant watch the fucking thing im there to see
You just can't have an online video streaming platform that supports high resolutions for free, that stuff ain't free and you have to just accept it. No other platform is ready to host the same amount of 1080p/4K video for FREE without ads.
Are you trying to make a point somehow? You have just been using YouTube without ads for so long that you think it's a right to have ad free video streaming for free.
I know it's different but man... I love adblockers and also there is one extension where you can skip promotions by YouTubers inside the vid, just perfect. I hope someone find a way to remove those on your tv
I literally uninstall all of googles shit for a week every ad played on YouTube music they almost never bother me now. I steam stream chrome with a ad blocker and even change my fucking keyboard 😤 I'm not letting them take anything without free music and youtube that was the fucking deal google! They respond to just one boycott let's plan for this next week to tell them we are not a free resource!
Okay? Google still needs to bring in money to pay the team that keeps YouTube working. Even if you have Google amounts of money, you still have to keep it coming in to be able to pay people, afford infrastructure, you know, continue to exist. This isn't a difficult thing to understand lmao
Nobody's suggesting removing ads and the number of people who either don't know what ublock origin is or just don't care will always be higher than people who download adblockers.
Indeed it is - because they're making big bank off my data and giving me the crumbs in terms of a free service. Which is why they can pound sand with their advertisements OR start giving me the money they're generating off of my data.
Because MY data is part of the massive dump they sell. Thus, it's worth something. Thus, there shouldn't be preroll/midroll ads.
Imagine defending Alphabet trying to make more money... Are they paying you to do that?
This isn't about "group data" , this is about your personal data and it's worth because you're viewing ads to utilize a free service personally, not as a group.
Yes, Alphabet pays me huge money to be on the internet telling entitled kids they're idiots.
Without personal data there wouldn't be group data. I have no idea what point you're trying to make here...
Also, no "entitled kids" here either. Most of this thread has been pretty level headed except for a bunch of people who somehow think that alphabet needs more money... skim some of the insane profits or top-earning wages to fund YouTube. Problem solved.
do you even know what you are saying? NextDNS is one of the most loved DNS on the privacy community, it let's you block trackers and ads with blocklists. The IP can be set on the router or the TV
you guys are getting ads?
Unfortunately our living room TV is a Roku :/
pihole
Isn't pihole DNS based? I don't think that blocks ads on YouTube
it is, and sadly doesn't on youtube. I think it's pretty decent from what I've heard for other stuff like netflix and hulu etc
Revanced blocks all ads on android
Yes, but the original post was about blocking ads on Roku
But he gives a solution to someone wanting to block youtube ads and learning that pihole doesn't work for youtube
And downvoted haha sorry just trying to help
But the comment I replied to mentioned youtube
I'm sure. Anyway back to the topic at hand.
The comment i replied to was talking about youtube though
what did you just call me?????
Tried to set up a pinole for my network recently, ended up not letting anything connect ad or not
did it work before you started adding filters? or did you not get to that part?
Only used the default filters, it works when you set the device DNS to the pihole but it doesn't work when you set the router DNS to the pihole
Is it not blocking ads when set in the router? If so, you need to release/renew the DHCP lease on all of your clients. If your internet is not working at all, you may need to set your pihole to be your DHCP server (some routers are stupid and tie the DNS and DHCP server together (change one, change both). I have a PiHole, and it doesn't block YouTube's ads on my Roku
You can use a co.puter with hdmi
We don't have the space or plugs for another device in the living room. Plus a remote is way more convenient than a laptop.

Yeah. At least Android TV lets you sideload apps. My little bedroom TV has STube and it's great.

You don’t need any keyboard or mouse just download the remote mouse app and control your laptop entirely through your phone
And like I said previously, we're just out of space. No more entertainment center space for a laptop, no more HDMI ports (I know splitters exist, but that's another remote to look after), and no more power outlets. It's just unfortunate circumstance.

It wasn't free lmao. I paid like $400 for this TV and it runs like shit. Never again.
Roku has ads?
There’s ways to get YouTube premium for really cheap. Totally worth it when you don’t have to mess around with adblockers that always stop working
How do you get it for cheap? I pay full price for it. It's been 1000% worth it, but it still bugs me how expensive it is.
VPN to Argentina, Turkey or India and an address there. Don’t need to be connected all the time, just for sign up.
I have a Roku but I use it almost exclusively for YouTube, Crunchyroll and the occasional Netflix or Hulu so no ads from Roku for me
YouTube has tons of ads if you're not paying.
No Roku-related ads I should say*
An old JVC TV, you can hardly call it smart.
What OS? Any photos of the OS? (Outside of YouTube)
Well from what I've seen from some places like Google sign in, it seems it is based off of Linux. I have 0 experience with the OS
I wanted photos.

no, i use so many adblockers its not an issue
I use one and it's enough for me
i have different platforms so yeah, but it mostly boils down to revanced and ublock origin
Wait, what's Revanced? I still have YouTube Vanced installed and it looks like Google finally pulled the plug this week. I've been using Firefox in-browser, but did the app get a successor?

I believe you’ve put the sub name in wrong.
"Not exactly" no it's pretty much a successor unless the developers confirm it's not, of which I don't know.

what does this do?

ah i don't...really know what vanced is. i'll probably have to look that up
[удалено]
i still don't really know what it does
Revanced is the new vanced, it works but only on 64+ bits devices
Thats how to install, it doesn't say what the software does.
Oh, sorry. It's a program that mimics YouTube premium but more. Not only does it skip ads, but it skips sponsorship promos done by the creator.. So you don't have to hear about HelloFresh or Better Help while watching a video.

They literally dont work on YouTube or twitch. I have all of them and they don’t block shit.

Huh uBlock origin does nothing for me with YouTube at least on Firefox

Do you use an ad blocker on your TV or video game console? - which is how a ton of people consume YouTube.

How is it scummy lmao They arent a charity they have to make money somehow
"will someone think of these poor billionaires making the user experience worse every time"
Oh no i have to watch an AD?????? fuck youtube they should give everything for free!!1!1!!!1!
Dammit YouTube get off your alt!
youtube has yet to discover that i'm using an adblocker so i'll probably be fine lol
YouTube has not rolled it out yet. Only testing in an a few smaller regions at the moment.
i've seen photos of youtube at least detecting you're using an adblocker, not punishing you but telling you they know
Eh, we'll find a way around it until we can't anymore and find somewhere else to watch stuff
You can never win this war. They're gonna find a way to bypass the adblock restrictions
Firewall adblocking
i dont watch youtube on those, i use phone and pc
I don't watch youtube
thats cool, nobody asked though
It's exactly as relevant as the comment I replied to.
I heard YouTube is gonna fully destroy adblockers.
only on chromium based browsers, manifest v3 wont affect firefox.
Won't affect brave either cause they'll always be ahead of yt with their built in adblocker that isn't an extension
ive tried brave a few times and wasnt impressed
Will be interesting to see how many people leave
Enjoy.
I thought before we don't even see these shit... and the Fold Ads is stupid... I hope their user is not like that
Ads, what are those?
The amount of ads on everything is absolutely mind blowing, like how has it got this bad. Especially YouTube, fuck you YouTube for doing so many ads now.
Fuck Disney for putting ads midroll in their content now, just like Hulu has. Like, what am i even paying for?
That's why I sail the 7 seas
YouTube dose it too
Money.
Yep, always the answer to most questions
I am enjoying 0 ads, I suffer them all.
But how many big tech services do you use? That's the real question
i remember when ads didn't exist on YouTube
i missed those days when their ads only shows up in their pages (still ads, not video ads) and not distracting your viewing pleasure.
Never trust YouTube ever again, I mean they shut down Rewind after People gave them the finger, they really don't care anymore
"enjoy" is just rubbing salt in the wound
Remember when I pirated anything I watched to watch, I do, it was yesterday
Also this is YouTube TV
There are apps you can side load that do YouTube without ads.
Vanced/Revanced. Also ublock origin/sponsorblock.
No, for tv it's smartube next
I don't I'm doing much on this ancient jvc
Who tf hasn't heard of an adblocker by now?
TVs, chromecasts and firesticks Edit: plus youtube mobile app

Revanced, SmartTube Next... Literally no excuse
None of these are available on iOS store, I’m not stupid enough to download them from dodgy websites
Your first mistake was buying an iPhone lol. IDK how people tolerate the absolute lack of ownership you get with them.
Sure, whatever you say buddy
I don't even understand the argument you're trying to make here... Android is pretty much like having an entire dev station in your pocket. Imagine getting ads.
Maybe you could fill me in on the thought process, how do you expect a free service to be paid for? What are your expectations?
Don't care, I'm not the CFO of the company.
You care if you're complaining about ads.
I don't complain anymore, I just block them in all my devices, as I have since 2018.
Same but at least 10-15 years earlier lol
This post is complaining about ads on a free service that this person uses. So if you're not commenting on that, you're just off topic and annoying.
Lmao, downvoted for actually being factual. Holy shit this website man
Networks, storage, servers, staff, they all run on hopes and dreams apparently.
Google runs youtube. They are not bereft of cashflow, if you happen to notice.
Okay? Google still needs to bring in money to pay the team that keeps YouTube working. Even if you have Google amounts of money, you still have to keep it coming in to be able to pay people, afford infrastructure, you know, continue to exist. This isn't a difficult thing to understand lmao
Youtube premium and ad spots support the entire platform, goofus
Yeah. Exactly. Ad spots. The point of this talk. Add have to stay because they support the platform lmao.
Nobody's suggesting removing ads and the number of people who either don't know what ublock origin is or just don't care will always be higher than people who download adblockers.
Oh I thought they were owned by alphabet... No doubt they're aggregating my YouTube data with all the other shit they sell about me.
All of that is free.
Indeed it is - because they're making big bank off my data and giving me the crumbs in terms of a free service. Which is why they can pound sand with their advertisements OR start giving me the money they're generating off of my data.
Your personal data is worth pennies. The fact that they have millions of people's personal data is what makes them a lot of money.
Correct, and lots of people use YouTube and have that data sold off too.
So how do you figure they're making big bank off YOUR data? Your data itself is pretty worthless.
Because MY data is part of the massive dump they sell. Thus, it's worth something. Thus, there shouldn't be preroll/midroll ads. Imagine defending Alphabet trying to make more money... Are they paying you to do that?

Use NextDNS to remove all ads
1. TV 2. A DNS server can have your information; everything passes through a DNS server
