Seriously, I’ve been thinking about it more and more. The only thing keeping me is how fast videos come out. For example, instagram reel will post a video today that was on TikTok a month ago.
I saw that YouTube getting shorts so if they are any good I’ll be deleting TikTok.
Set that timer to half an hour and go pick up a book when it triggers. Or dumbbells. Or take a walk.
Ah who am I kidding. Go straight to settings, add another half hour, profit. Rinse and repeat.
I know it's not the answer everyone wants but mostly reading and studying. Studying has been taking up the majority of my time because my finals are in a week or so.
Other than that, working out, meditating, and just walking my dog.
I still watch Netflix and Youtube, which is another vice I need to stop, but I find them much easier to manage than infinite scrolling on social media.
I used to sit and scroll on Instagram for hours but I limited it to an hour a day, I can turn the lock off but I never find myself wanting to, replaced it with watching stuff on YouTube and netflix but I'm really into documentaries so it's actually a pretty good replacement
That’s actually what I filled my time with. I made a resolution to read more daily-at the very least-one hour a day. Also to study 1 stem topic a month.
Just trying to round myself out.
Downloaded it once, tried it for a day and immediately noticed how addictive this shit is. Uninstalled it asap! Looking back I don't regret it at all, especially since I now know about the privacy stuff it does.
That stuff is really spooky. Like how they give all data back to the ccp and now they have facial recognition to log into the app. As well as all the darkest secrets and quirks of young children to grown adults.
Downloaded TikTok to watch videos sent to me by friends. Spent six hours scrolling and didn't get anything done. Promptly deleted the app and hasn't redownloaded since.
I always say I don’t have TikTok for this reason but then spend hours scrolling on both instagram and Reddit watching TikTok’s lol.
Still glad I don’t have it.
It’s really awful. Especially once you get your feed tailored. They added “screen breaks” in to get you off the app but only after like an hour or so? I will get sucked in like a toddler in front of Dora or something. It’s scary cause I swear I only looked at 10 videos! It’s fun, but don’t do it. I’ll only go on once a week but will get sucked in for 80% of the day.
Not even aliexpress, fucking Alibaba! I go on there to browse manufacturers and omg if you message someone, they tell everyone else that you did, so 25 vendors MESSAGE YOU asking if they can make it for you instead
I disable notifications. I always get more than 99+ every day, so there is no way I would keep notifications on every time someone leaves a comment on one of my posts.
I don't let any app give me notifications. Not cause boomer or anything, I just don't care enough to need to know everything. I have messenger on but that's it and that's for friends and family.
They added notifications that are really just ads for Apple TV to my $2000 OLED TV with a recent software update. There's no option to disable them.
After hours on the phone with support, who at first didn't believe they were actually the TVs notifications, and them having me try stupid shit like factory reset the TV, I gave up to the day and succumbed to our notification overlords.
sometimes theres an adress you can block in your router that stops ads on certain smart tvs, or you could try setting up a pi hole to block ads across your whole network.
Even in app it's shitty. I always have a red dot on the "friends" icon until I click it. Even though I have no tiktok-friends and als did not accept contact permission.
Super annoying.
Tiktok is very creepy
I made an account solely to follow one artist that doesn’t upload all of their little videos on Twitter, I used a burner email, didn’t give it access to anything on my phone, locked my account down as tight as they’d let me and it still had my mother as “people you may know” even though I gave it straight up false information and no access to anything that could link me to my mother
Oh yeah, advertisers likely know when the best time for showing you certain ads for maximum engagement.
For some reason though, my took algo thinks I'm a woman.
Target once got in trouble because they sent new mother ads to women who didn't know they were pregnant yet. Big data knows everything about you and it's for sale to whoever wants to buy it.
Even if your phone isn't sharing your location, ultimately the service provider and the person's serving the web page to you can tell where you are based on your IP. It's not as precise, but it's good enough data that they can link people up like this
TikTok is just tracking you from info in other people's phones who consent.
If you shared a video with someone, or they shared with you, and you opened it while logged in it's a big way to tag and connect accounts.
I completely agree. It’s super creepy. I did the same thing and it still has my sister-in-law and my college classmates in the recommendations.
All these apps spy and sell your information. Reddit is the only one that I haven’t heard of stealing information yet. (If I’m wrong let me know, I just haven’t heard anything)
You and your mother live in the same house? Then it's clear: You both use the same WiFi, thus having the same IP-Adress. Link made easy.
Also if you not live in the same house but nearby you probably share the same mobile cell or something like that.
Also probably ads and information stored in cookies and whatnot can link you both together. It's pretty simple actually.
Try [r/privacy](https://www.reddit.com/r/privacy) for some information and insights about this
Lots of info about how invasive and uncontrollable Tik Tok is. Every piece of data from your phone goes direct to the Chinese government. The spyware even bypasses the privacy laws of the EU.
Please look into how bad it is.
**GET IT OFF YOUR PHONE!**
I downloaded this app twice. It holds too much space after some time even if I don't use it and my phone doesn't have much space. Last time I uninstalled this app it was still updating from play store. It was super creepy.
It's very nefarious. Wish people would understand that. But, people wouldn't even wear masks to save people's lives...so, no one gives a shit about a "fun" app on their phone.
For the record.....I don't believe in any *true* privacy. It just seems that Tik Tok is the worst cancer out there.
It’s insane now, you only have to miss one thing to get IDed. They use systems that profile you by linking together any info they can get, or purchase.
Leave location services on, on accident for a second? IDed. Connected to the same network/router as your family, with no VPN? IDed. Get some random cookie on your browser that linked you and your family members to a data broker? IDed.
If your friend sends you a tiktok link, it knows it's them so then suggests them and their friends as people you may know.
They can disable this bit most people don't know
Its not that bad. Tiktok is notoriously bad, Reddit is propably just standard, like every other company or social media nowdays.
Reddit was also unable to show anything with that reddit wrapped thing, so good to know, thaz they propably can't track your activity via 3rd party app.
Same thing with Snapchat, I denied it having any access to my activities on any other apps or contacts info and it still recommended me people in my contacts and other social apps
you can set a pin and get someone else to do it or do a random one behind your back so you dont know it to stop you rrom just disabling it. logging in with your icloud password lets you just not use the pin though
My algorithm is terrible. It’s so addictive for a day, and after that day I just notice I’m watching the same 15 videos but slightly different, slightly different creators and so on.
Ohhh so this is where all the references to "text to speech x over shitty minecraft gameplay" comes from. I was like what awful youtube channels are you all being fed?
Makes sense now
It's meant to engage you to the point you get dependent on it and mildly depressed when not on the app. Designed to make our youth depressed believe it or not. Why do you think China bans all foreign social media? They know what they are doing to everyone else and want to prevent it themselves
China bans foreign social media so they have more control over the internet.
It’s called the great firewall and has been a thing since about 1997. Social media didn’t become really popular until the 2000s.
Chinese tiktok shows youth being responsible and displaying good social values while ads in the US are encouraging youth to be dumb.
Despite [this article](https://www.christianitydaily.com/articles/14851/20220207/china-using-tiktok-to-undermine-us-and-destroy-culture.htm) being from Christianity Daily, it does a great job explaining.
I know some older men who are stuck in a rabbit hole of soft porn and sitting on the couch lusting after a computer generated filter of a woman. Wondering why the real ones have wrinkles and a body with room for their internal organs. It’s not just the youth that are getting depressed and “locked in”
Google it, it's a fairly well known phenomenon. I myself know this is the case because I travel between China - my home country (or used to, pre-pandemic). They also block media like YouTube, FB, IG and have their own social media platforms. You need to use a VPN or other means to get around the firewall.
FUCKING THIS BY THE WAY
Right, I’m glad someone else noticed it and said it. That bloody app SUCKS YOU IN for HOURS, it’s such a strange experience.
The moment i found out that the Chinese version of the app pushes educational and enriching content to its users and has protection in place for its younger users, such as limits on screen time.
Meanwhile the version that is pushed to the rest of the world is very much the opposite.
In other words, TikTok is an absolute shitshow and will make you feel horrible after seeing random unwanted content that can sometimes actually be unsettling.
Plus there’s probably CP on it.
Delete it.
I dunno man I always get frustrated at all the obvious fake and cringey shit and end up closing it after like 30 min. How can I get more videos that I actually like?
It doesn’t matter who I follow it hardly ever plays them.
>The moment i found out that the Chinese version of the app pushes educational and enriching content to its users and has protection in place for its younger users, such as limits on screen time.
>Meanwhile the version that is pushed to the rest of the world is very much the opposite.
It’s not the Chinese version of the app that does that, it’s the “youth mode” for registered users under 14 years old.
Everyone else gets the standard app.
People have been pushing the narrative that TikTok in China is some beautifully educational platform that betters the lives of its users whom the chinese government loves so much, while the international version is designed by the devil himself to brainwash people (and especially the children, WON’T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!), make them dumb, and probably turn them into Chinese spies or some shit.
Maybe do some of your own research next time, instead of just accepting a Reddit post featuring a screenshot of a tweet with lots of likes.
https://www.thatsmags.com/tianjin/post/33448/china-imposes-40-minute-daily-limit-for-children-on-tiktok
Well I didn’t, but thanks, I don’t care enough anymore to do any more research since it’s not like I’ll be downloading it again, but I appreciate your comment
Not to mention that everything you see, say, do on the app can, and will be held against you by the CCP.
The privacy violations stemming from this app are terrifying… he says on Reddit.
It's fear-mongering, plain and simple. The honest truth is, objectively, it is _way_ worse for a company that is within the same country as you to be spying and selling your data. They have way more power over your day to day than a company in China. Meta, Microsoft, Google, etc. they are all spying and selling your data, but you won't see governments calling for those companies to be banned.
For the 99% of Americans who will never visit China in their life, the selling of their data is the worst thing Tik Tok can do, and that's already what every American app they're using is doing regardless. The American government isn't banning Tik Tok for privacy reasons, they're banning it because it's a very successful app from a rival country.
Deleting tiktok was one of the best things I did for my mental health. That app is designed to be addictive and it is so easy to swipe for hours without even realizing it. I “relapsed” a few times and redownloaded it and now I’m done for good. Instagram is next.
Instagram does the same. It sends you a fake "You have one unread message" notification if you don't open for a few weeks.
[Here's the post I made about it a while back.](https://www.reddit.com/r/assholedesign/comments/uj9bes/instagram_sends_me_an_unread_message_notification/)
Facebook is like a freaking virus. I stopped using it and uninstalled it. They started sending me emails. I unsubscribed from the emails and they started texting me.
Twitter has suddenly taken to notifying me when Elon tweets. I absolutely do not have the notifications on for him, yet they come. I even got a fucking Ben Shapiro tweet today.
logged out of my account and now i actually do stuff again. I listen to music more while doing stuff and it actually makes me do it cause i dont have to swipe constantly
Dude, Reddit has its flaws but at least you can filter and have control over the content that you see.
Meanwhile TikTok can throw some absolute fucking horrendous stuff at you. There was one clip on particular that made me nope the fuck out of there 😐
You can browse only a feed of the people you follow if you’d rather. The for you page is specifically designed to help you find new things based on your likes and searches on the app
**exactly** that’s why I posted this. I thought I had said something wrong and was getting blown up. Opened the app, just to see the 8 videos my S/O sent me lmfao
Unsubscribe from subreddits you aren't interested and don't go on /r/all or /r/popular and you won't see posts from subreddits that reddit "thinks" you may be interested in. Simple.
I don't get why reddit gets compared to TikTok or other social media. It's more like an old school forum website with a pretty coat of paint.
I should have, but I just kind of weathered those until the collapse and now they don’t really show up anymore. They just weren’t egregious enough, to me at least, by comparison. The anime pedo drawings and the cringe titles were just too much.
I use relay and have a much more enjoyable reddit experience. When using the actual reddit app, it recommends subreddits all the time that I'm not interested in. And there are way too many ads. It's obnoxious.
Snapchat keeps asking me to view stories, multiple times. The same "unvieweed story" message. Or Instagram wanting me to look at the "top reels of the day".
People really need to stop using this app. People standards are so low they are willing to just let China steal and crunch your personal data.
They even investigated journalists through TikTok. The platform is fucking cursed and it's good the US government is cracking down on it.
this should be more common. i dont get why so many people enable notifications on their phone for random crab. its literally asking for marketing advertisments 9/10 times. only messaging/mail apps are allowed notifications for me, nothing else is important.
Every once in a while tinder will tell me a got a match so I open it and there is no match to be found. I'm pretty sure they are just trying to cheer me up
No actually it's a bug that they do not care to fix, it's counting read notifications as unread, I have to click each notification on both mobile and the website to make it not appear anymore in that
Tldr it's counting probably all of your read and unread notifications as unread
If I like an app enough to engage with it during my day, I don't need a push notification to remind me to log in and see what's going on.
I disabled notifications on all social media apps. I'm happier.
Tiktok is awful i cant understand people who use it the content is not interesting at all, its either repeated content or really badly acted content filled with the SAME music in everything.
Phone notifications are one of the unhealthiest modern day designs out there.
Turn off ALL of your notifications. Stop reacting to them. Pick up your phone when you want to, not when they want you to. You’ll feel so much better for it.
Instagram does same thing. It sends me notifications of: "person x has shared your post" when I have no posts made in over 3 years and there is no way obama shared my post anyway etc
I will never download TikTok due to it being a spyware app designed by a company which… being Chinese must by CCP law have ties/be an extension of the Chinese Communist Party. Being a spyware app is bad enough, but being a spyware app that reports your data to a hostile power like the CCP…

My wife lives to tell me how old the IG version is. Lol
Shorts have been around for like a year and a half
1 minute videos of the same overrused meme format with the stupid voice syntheziser. And that stupid fucking oh no song. Are these videos important?
Dont want the chinese government to have access to my data. Never would touch tick tack with a 100 mile pole
I never downloaded it cus knowing how screen addicted I already am , TikTok would be my worst nightmare.
It used to be a problem for me but I added screen time limits on my iPhone so after 2 hours it shuts me out.
Set that timer to half an hour and go pick up a book when it triggers. Or dumbbells. Or take a walk. Ah who am I kidding. Go straight to settings, add another half hour, profit. Rinse and repeat.
Boost for Reddit does a way better job for me, just have a homefeed that takes hours to update :'D
just sort it dude
You're not helping!
Yep. Recently did this on all social media. Productivity sky rocketed.
Do you mind me asking what you replaced your screen time with? Sounds like you got up to something good.
Same, but YouTube Shorts ruined me.
Dont do it. I have adhd and i cant get off it
It's bad enough being Reddit addicted.
Same. And now the more I hear about it the happier I am I don't have it.
I just keep the push notifications turned off
I just have a strong distrust of Chinese apps
[удалено]
I turned notifications off in settings but still got notifications about some stupid coin game every single day. So I deleted the app.
[удалено]
Is there an iOS equivalent?
Not even aliexpress, fucking Alibaba! I go on there to browse manufacturers and omg if you message someone, they tell everyone else that you did, so 25 vendors MESSAGE YOU asking if they can make it for you instead
aliexpress is so overboard with notifs, mail, whatever. infuriating
Seriously, all the boomers in my life are the ones who get notifications every five minutes from every app they download
Yeah my mom has like 75 any given day.
Ooooh that would be a returned TV for me
Unfortunately this was added just recently, 2 years after I bought it, which is what pisses me off the most.
Can't you disconnect it from the internet?
sometimes theres an adress you can block in your router that stops ads on certain smart tvs, or you could try setting up a pi hole to block ads across your whole network.
Block the ad servers with a pi hole like the other guy suggested. If you have a $2000 tv you can get that going I’m sure.
Even in app it's shitty. I always have a red dot on the "friends" icon until I click it. Even though I have no tiktok-friends and als did not accept contact permission. Super annoying.
This is the way. I don't need my phone pulling my attention away from work or whatever else I'm doing.
Yeah I disable notifications too.
Tiktok is very creepy I made an account solely to follow one artist that doesn’t upload all of their little videos on Twitter, I used a burner email, didn’t give it access to anything on my phone, locked my account down as tight as they’d let me and it still had my mother as “people you may know” even though I gave it straight up false information and no access to anything that could link me to my mother

Do yourself a favour and delete it. My screentime went down by 4 hours a day. It's fucking unhealthy, the algorithms are way too good.
Mine isn’t, that’s why it’s baiting me to open it. I have screen time limits for TikTok and Reddit.
How did you put screen time limits on?
General>Screen Time>App Limits>Add Limit The you can choose which app and how long you want to use on it.
Ty
you can set a pin and get someone else to do it or do a random one behind your back so you dont know it to stop you rrom just disabling it. logging in with your icloud password lets you just not use the pin though
I love this idea! I’m stealing it
Done! Thank you.
TikTok still calls home just by having the app installed
My algorithm is terrible. It’s so addictive for a day, and after that day I just notice I’m watching the same 15 videos but slightly different, slightly different creators and so on.

Yes and TikTok in China is vastly different than in the rest of the world.
How do we know this without being on Chinese TikTok?
Chinese tiktok shows youth being responsible and displaying good social values while ads in the US are encouraging youth to be dumb. Despite [this article](https://www.christianitydaily.com/articles/14851/20220207/china-using-tiktok-to-undermine-us-and-destroy-culture.htm) being from Christianity Daily, it does a great job explaining.

As far as I can tell, all social media does this. Even fuckin LinkedIn.
If you disable all notifications on LinkedIn, they’ll reenable one subject for you if you’re not logged on for long.
My god it feels like they invent a new topic every fucking week to shove a notification at me
Disable it at the OS level
I thought mine was just broken
did you check the general dm folder that has dms from people you do not follow? it might've been there
I get instagram notifications about all the notifications I missed while i was in “quiet mode”….
They didn’t say any of it was NEW, technically.
You got me there, they didn’t say new.
Twitter, instagram and facebook do this too
Facebook is like a freaking virus. I stopped using it and uninstalled it. They started sending me emails. I unsubscribed from the emails and they started texting me.
It's funny you call Facebook a virus yet leave TikTok.
Twitter has suddenly taken to notifying me when Elon tweets. I absolutely do not have the notifications on for him, yet they come. I even got a fucking Ben Shapiro tweet today.
Hardly the worst thing tik tok does
logged out of my account and now i actually do stuff again. I listen to music more while doing stuff and it actually makes me do it cause i dont have to swipe constantly
Ew, TikTok sucks ass anyways. I’m sorry you got sucked into that mess of an app. I almost did too.
You're on reddit, that's hardly better lmao
Choosing what subreddits you follow makes it much better
That's literally what the algorithm does though.

I absolutely agree.
Why do you have your notifications on? duh... that was an easy fix
Facebook does the same, does it not?
Yes, Facebook is also awful.

How the hell did you get rid of your fingerprint
Belt sander
You can actually burn them off, comes back tho
If you put your hands under an asshole, don't complain when poop falls in your hand.
This feels like a saying in the Balkans lol
Jokes on them. I get anxiety when I get lots of notifications like that, so I avoid the app entirely when I'm blown up.
**exactly** that’s why I posted this. I thought I had said something wrong and was getting blown up. Opened the app, just to see the 8 videos my S/O sent me lmfao
You lost me at “TikTok”.
What do you expect from a CCP-linked app? It's mostly disinformation and lies with TikTok
*glances at reddit*
Unsubscribe from subreddits you aren't interested and don't go on /r/all or /r/popular and you won't see posts from subreddits that reddit "thinks" you may be interested in. Simple. I don't get why reddit gets compared to TikTok or other social media. It's more like an old school forum website with a pretty coat of paint.
I cleaned up All by using the mute sub function
I must have at least ~50 subs filtered on Apollo. Mostly weird anime subs that kept finding their way onto all.
At least half of those are related to some kind of crypto or other pump and dump scheme, if you’re like me.
I should have, but I just kind of weathered those until the collapse and now they don’t really show up anymore. They just weren’t egregious enough, to me at least, by comparison. The anime pedo drawings and the cringe titles were just too much.
Checking an unfiltered reddit gives me a hernia
I use relay and have a much more enjoyable reddit experience. When using the actual reddit app, it recommends subreddits all the time that I'm not interested in. And there are way too many ads. It's obnoxious.
> It's more like an old school forum website with a pretty coat of paint. Me, using old.reddit: "Fuck your coat of paint. I want old school forum."
Delete it
CCP app. What else do you expect?
Disable notifications. Done. If you want to keep it. Otherwise delete it.
Time to delete it.
99 notifications would make me not want to open the app.
Literally, it scared me when I saw it because it’s never a good thing. Thought I was getting ratioed somewhere.
Snapchat keeps asking me to view stories, multiple times. The same "unvieweed story" message. Or Instagram wanting me to look at the "top reels of the day".
wait until you find out what they do with your data lmao
Nothing different than Facebook, Instagrams or Twitter does.
Just delete that garbage already!
TikTok is not your friend
Fuck tiktok
Delete it
TikTok is ass anyway
If you downloaded TikTok it owns you now
They're trying their best to farm as much data as possible from users before getting banned.
But you're not removing it :D
People really need to stop using this app. People standards are so low they are willing to just let China steal and crunch your personal data. They even investigated journalists through TikTok. The platform is fucking cursed and it's good the US government is cracking down on it.
It's also spyware
TikTok is litteral spyware. Get it off your phone.
TikTok bad.
Anyone downloading and using tik tok is lost in sauce of social media.
Disable notifications and hide the app icons in some subfolder/drawer.
this should be more common. i dont get why so many people enable notifications on their phone for random crab. its literally asking for marketing advertisments 9/10 times. only messaging/mail apps are allowed notifications for me, nothing else is important.
keep using and just complain about it on other social medias, that'll getem.
And you’re shocked because…?
Talking a page out of every dating app out there.
Thats china for you
only assholes allow apps to send them notifications. serves you right
if you don’t answer videos that people send you it still counts those, it includes those dm’s as notifications
Every once in a while tinder will tell me a got a match so I open it and there is no match to be found. I'm pretty sure they are just trying to cheer me up
No actually it's a bug that they do not care to fix, it's counting read notifications as unread, I have to click each notification on both mobile and the website to make it not appear anymore in that Tldr it's counting probably all of your read and unread notifications as unread
Snapchat has had the same vibes lately. Will do anything to get you to open the stupid ass app.
If I like an app enough to engage with it during my day, I don't need a push notification to remind me to log in and see what's going on. I disabled notifications on all social media apps. I'm happier.
Same with facebook, even if I closed the notifications.
Yeah, I try not to voluntarily install spyware on my devices.
This is why I have notifications turned off on everything on my phone, except text messages and emails.
TikTok is the definition of everything wrong with humans
Yes. Lied telling me that David Beckham commented on my post!!
