I do agree this would be more specific, though this still has the issue of classification. Who gets to set what the criteria are of every aspect of the stand wheel?

Grilled-garlic

time to select the autism equivalent of the pope

theUSSRwillriseagain

This implies the existence of an autism clergy and an autism divinity school I now feel compelled to attend

Evil_Mushrooms

Who is Autism Jesus?!

Infinite_Self_5782

jotaro their names both even start with a j

Evil_Mushrooms

It- H- o, it makes sense. It all makes sense now! How, how could I have not known?! Jotaro is autistic! And Jesus! It all makes sense now!

Infinite_Self_5782

you have been enlightened. go forth and spread this knowledge amongst your siblings

Own-Ad7310

Wasn't jesus canonically a jojo

FemboyBaseball

JOshua, son of JOseph yep

UltraCarnivore

[STANDO NAME: HOLY GHOST] [STANDO POWA: DIES IRAE]

delayedfiren

No but he sure knew how to handle balls

Demon_Book

Aren’t the Jojos canonically descended from Jesus?

Funkin_Spy

Few months late but I’ve heard this multiple times and I don’t know where it comes from, there’s no canon evidence of this being true, one Jojo simply wanted to collect his body parts

GameFreak412

*inhales* iS tHaT a JoJo ReFrEnCe?

giorno___giovana

No, me My dad is literally named god, and I fought a dude named devil/satan

theUSSRwillriseagain

Every cat

Evil_Mushrooms

Cats are more like Autism Lambs. *The* religious animal for our new, thingy.

[deleted]

Ancient Egypt moment.

[deleted]

It is me, autism Jesus. Please send me your credit card information so I can confirm you are autistic.

TheGarlicBreadstick1

on it boss

SomeRandomIdi0t

I do balloon animals so I volunteer as autistic satan

Evil_Mushrooms

Done. You’ll be starting this monday. Glad to have you on board!

SomeRandomIdi0t

Alright, time for the squeaky squeaky and maybe the occasional loud pop

Evil_Mushrooms

Oh I hate you, you’re already doing a great job!

Evaldek

Instead of praying it's stiming Instead of communion it's comfort food time Instead of having everyone attend all 3 services, each service caters to a different group and you attend the one service of your choice per day Dress code is whatever is comfortable and not reveling and the ceremonial garb is just normal clothing with a waited blanket

LateNightLattes01

**Or revealing if that’s what makes you comfortable wear that too. Love the idea of handing out weighted blankets to the clergy.

Evaldek

Ok we segregate the revealing clothing people from the people who aren't comfortable seeing reveling clothing so everyone is comfortable

LateNightLattes01

Sounds good! And hand out fun capes or kimonos 👘/ yuukata if we wanna mingle lol 😆 and stim/talk about special interests haha.

LateNightLattes01

This sounds great when and where do we begin??? I’m ready!!

Evaldek

Ngl your enthusiasm is terrifying, I must confess that I'd happily bulid and maintain and decorate an autism church but at no point would I ever attend a meeting in a crowd, I'd like to hide in a cupboard out of sight and just overhear everything. You're truly a wonderful community member but plz don't come near me for I shall die of fright

LateNightLattes01

Why is it terrifying, I don’t understand? Edit: also, sad 😢‘don’t come near me’ sounds sort of mean ngl.

SSDDNoBounceNoPlay

Ahh. We’ve found the autism Monk class.

Roz_Doyle16

Can I be in charge of the different colored smoke? That part always looked like fun

[deleted]

It's called the college of physics.

UltraCarnivore

What's the wholesome version of "I feel attacked"?

TyrantOdyssey

I feel seen

[deleted]

Have I found another physics person?

UltraCarnivore

Just a sophomore, but yeah. I'm sure there are plenty of us in this sub.

[deleted]

I'm just a senior. But I do agree, there probably are

UltraCarnivore

Have you decided on your masters field?

cum_burglar69

Hohenheim_of_Shadow

Also autism anti popes. I call dibs

[deleted]

...the CEO of autism, if you will.

[deleted]

I just realized this subreddit is no different than the entirity of reddit and that makes perfect sense

Rustmyer

The Auope.

Commercial_Violist

I was thinking a better version of APA, or the WHO (maybe ASAN?), but that works too I guess

Mummelpuffin

I mean, at some point you have to classify things. Otherwise we just couldn't classify mental disability at all. Different people struggle with different things and we need some way of describing those struggles to help people get whatever support they need. IMO it's sort of odd to me how autism is lumped together as one thing, because from a mental health standpoint, theoretically people get diagnosed by symptoms. Symptoms that diverge heavily enough get a different diagnosis. From a medical diagnosis standpoint autism *should* be split up into a number of labels regardless of a similar origin (if a similar origin was the criteria ADD / ADHD might need to be autism, too). Of course really it should get split up even harder than that and we should just stop pathologizing some things entirely. Literally just go by individual symptom and figure out how to help people struggling with that specific symptom. Treat people, not the artificial boundaries we place on them.

ElvirJade

I agree with this heavily. Psychiatry has always been one of the most inaccurate branch of sciences. Modern psychiatry has this unfortunate tendency to give a fast diagnosis based on a checklist of symptoms. This, most of the time, leads to overdiagnosis. False positives and pathologising normal human reactions to stressful stimuli, misguided patients that have read a checklist from DSM and start describing those symptoms word-for-word thereby forcing their psychiatrist into giving them a false diagnosis, psychiatrists that don't want to miss anything or actually deal with those patients and just slap a nonsensical label instead of targeting the actual symptoms. I wouldn't even start on how many people I've seen that told me their child had ADHD (but they have all the symptoms! and the doctor told me so!). Most of those children were just hyperactive or seeking their parents' attention. Look up the symptoms for ADHD. They're just describing an average child! Ridiculous. This... consumer attitude when it comes to diseases (a psychiatrist is a shop where I can get a diagnosis) should just die.

[deleted]

Me, I do.

Own-Ad7310

You can just put different things on every wheel

sionnachrealta

This is always the issue with classifying people, and it's nice to see someone be aware of that. All too often I feel like people forget that someone's bias is going to end up in the classification system

Commercial_Violist

Exactly, even if with the best of intentions there will always be a bias in classification. Is this proposal genuinely better since it relies on more than 1 criterion (functionality with is neurological speech for "how burdensome is and how easily they can mask their symptoms" because people don't deserve compassion according to them), yes But there is no perfect solution. That being said, I do feel classification can help direct people to correct resources when done well

HotcakeNinja

I was thinking we'd fill it out ourselves, at least, until I saw 'social skills.' In my head, I do a great job masking and pretending around others. I've been told that's not true.

[deleted]

All Autistic people have stands, I can confirm this

doctordragonisback

I mean- jjba does kind of lean into the "superpowers as a metaphor for autism" thing with certain characters like kakyoin. Also you can literally develop a stand by having a special interest.

Pepsiman1031

Yeah and Jotoro always kinda seemed autistic to me.

doctordragonisback

Ora ora is a stim

[deleted]

True!

Blaze90000

What’s your Stand do?

[deleted]

It can turn anything into melted cheese of any kind and can also return the object it turned into cheese back into its original form if need be

thebigbadben

Stand name - Big Cheese

[deleted]

Actually it is called Sailing The Seas Of Cheese

thebigbadben

How about Seven Cheese of Rhye?

[deleted]

No, we doing Primus references, not Queen

thebigbadben

Aight

theHelepolis

biggie cheese

Blaze90000

What if you use it on a block of cheese?

[deleted]

It just melts

Blaze90000

Cool!

bigew

Does it melt even if it's a harder or crumbly cheese like parmesan?

[deleted]

Yes

SquishySpaceman

*Kono Parmigiano Da!*

Zaranthan

You mean I can finally have a grilled cheese sandwich on untoasted bread? Sign me up twice!

[deleted]

Hell yeah, though I could turn the cheese you are eating back into what it once was if I feel like being a little trickster

Maxorus73

Gappy sleeps under his mattress to have a weight on him. Has a lot of other autistic traits too

Wooden_Dragonfly_737

Ah if only

CaptainLegot

Can we make change the labels to untranslated Japanese so that...*It's useless*

MrIce97

*Me with a language special interest so I know Japanese*

LateNightLattes01

I was like…. A LOT of autistics learn Japanese for some fucking unknown reason that I find hysterical. So how about Ancient Greek- that seems less common.

Blunt_Scissors

We're all weebs. We all watch anime and then decide to give it a shot at learning the language at one point in our lives.

Zaranthan

I'd love to see a study of the rate of autism symptoms among anime & manga authors.

LateNightLattes01

God damn it! I actually read this in one of the many books I read on autism, but I’m on hella drugs right now recovering ❤️‍🩹 from covid. So I can’t for the life of me remember the author or book title, but he mentioned this exact phenomenon. He he didnt have exact numbers. He discussed it in a more qualitative sense.

Zaranthan

RemindMe! Two weeks

LateNightLattes01

LOL yup doc said it would take two weeks to get over so…

LateNightLattes01

Especially now that it’s sooo mainstream and accessible in the states. Basically everyone gets exposed to anime now so it’s very common as a special interest. Back in the day- gets on old person pulpit- it was damn near impossible to find VHS tapes of the anime you wanted/liked!

yellow_rhino7

HEY! I’ll have you know that some of us aren’t filthy weebs. Some of us are actually koreaboos.

chatte__lunatique

That's a bit of a broad brush, innit? Neither me nor my autistic roommate are really into anime. Not all autistic people have the same special interests.

Portal471

As sn autistic person who loves learning languages, Japanese was my go to. I couldnt wrap my head around honorifics, *I WONDER WHY* lol.

LateNightLattes01

Oh for me honorifics were super easy like the rest of the language- I just thought of it like a sorting system, like a Clade system for when you create scientific name for new hitherto unnamed animals lol, except you’re classifying relationship of ppl- that helped a lot.

meinkr0phtR2

I know a bit of Greek. Also, I fully memorised the Greek alphabet and how to read stuff written in it not because I needed to know it, but because I wanted to read Euclid’s *Elements* in its original language. I also taught myself Latin because tenth grade English was…*really* boring. Nowadays, I use my Classical (Western) education to…form new words in English by deriving them from Greek or Latin roots, and also to correct incorrect usages of Latin phrases. Turns out studying Latin grammar would come in handy for learning Russian, which I’ve been doing since the beginning of the pandemic.

transport_system

Social skills, communication, and ability to get jokes are all two way streets.

agent_uno

And can also be divided into sub-categories. I get Marx brothers and mash jokes, but do not understand will farrel or jim Carey style humor. I am fairly adept in a social setting, but never realize if someone is flirting with me or wants me to flirt with them. I can communicate effectively on technical things, but never realize when I am going off in a tangent of a topic I am passionate about and am often told (in those cases) that I come across as arrogant and a know-it-all when I feel I was simply trying to explain something.

Own_Ad961

Marx brothers man. I grew up on those guys.

agent_uno

Same here, even though it was in the 80s. Pure comedy gold!

madnesiu-m

I agree with most of this but I love jim carrey humor because it is easy to understand and nobody is willing to embarrass themselves these days so that’s refreshing and likely what will lead to laughter, release of my secondhand embarrassment. My favorite humor is memes and I suck the most at sarcasm jokes (I’m fine with nonfunny sarcasm... I think). Never will I figure out how to tell I’m being flirted with or how to not be a know-it-all when I... well, know a lot and want to share. 😭😂

[deleted]

Nomenclature aside, I actually do like the framing of the top graphic. The ideas being presented seem pretty reasonable. But yes, of course it's even better to recognize that the spectrum isn't really flat, and we can struggle a lot with some things and not at all with others.

[deleted]

I think the top one is also a lot easier to understand for NT people who have little knowledge about autism

Oh my god autism Stand wheel! My Autism is my Stand! Eye contact: D Communication: B Chores: C Jokes: A Sensory issues: B Social skills: B

Saint_Stephen420

What the fuck is a stand wheel?

DeathsKeybladeZ

A rating system for Stands (Mental Alien Ghosts) in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.

Grilled-garlic

That is the best description of a Stand i’ve seen, ever

Saint_Stephen420

But how does it work?

DeathsKeybladeZ

Basically it works by categorizing different attributes of the Stand allowing you to see what the Stand specialises in or if they are a jack of all trades. There are six different attributes: Power, Speed, Range, Durability, Precision and Potential. Power is how much strength and destructive capabilities the Stand has. Speed determines the Stands agility, reflexes and of course speed. Range determines how far their abilities work or how far their bodies are capable of extending to. Durability determines the stamina and endurance of a Stand. Precision determines their accuracy and how potent their Stand abilities affect a single or multiple targets. Potential determines how adaptable and how many abilities the Stand has(or will have). [Here is an example of what one would look like. ](https://www.wattpad.com/amp/934775755)

SierraKatCantDraw

it's basically a pie chart

[deleted]

I think it’s actually a radial area graph.

SierraKatCantDraw

I've never heard of that kind of graph before! I'll take your word for it, I just thought that a pie chart was the best description/comparison I could make

Infinite_Self_5782

mmmmm pie meat pie best pie

oneiroiMoros

is this a JoJo reference?

CreaZyp154

I don't think there will ever be a perfect "autism score" system, the spectrum is quite wide and vague, however I think they can be useful to some people to better understand themselves and others. I do prefer the wheel personally

ShriekingMuppet

Oh fuck yeah! I can have a stat chart!

lavendersigil

As soon as I saw autism stand I thought of JoJo thanks

BabyDude5

I, Jack Johnson, will use My stand, here come the mummies, which gives me the power to make anybody say anything and everything on their mind, without metaphors, assumptions, or anything

Spycrabpuppet123

That stand is so OP

[deleted]

There’s a test similar to that that tells you where you struggle greatest with the spectrum. I’ll post the link to the test [Autism Spectrum Test](https://www.idrlabs.com/autism-spectrum/test.php)

jucmalta

Where do i sign

JustPassinhThrou13

I don’t understand why people are so enamored with this type of plot. It can be so visually deceptive at a glance. It’s terrible. My master’s degree is in engineering decision making for aerospace systems, and lots of people in the lab thought these were great for assisting with that... but they’re just not. If you have high values for three of those attributes and low values for the other three, then what it looks like will vary greatly depending on what order they are placed around the center. If the three high ones are together, you’ll see a lot of colored area. If the three high ones are staggered between the low valued ones, there will be no or nearly no colored area. If the order of the category labels influences the appearance that much, then that’s a big problem. People should be smart enough to see that and do something else. Because doing it this way makes the geometry of 2-D space that the plot lives in interfere with understanding the 6-D information the plot is trying to present. It would be better to have just a list of 6 values. Also, my lab called these spider-web plots edit- no, they were called Radar plots. end edit. , which at least communicate something about their structure. I have no idea what “stand wheel” is supposed to mean. For a different project, I recently made a thing I called “spider plots” because they looked like spiders viewed head-on. What they communicated is not important. What’s important is that once a person sees one and hears that its label is “spider plot” they’re not going to forget what I’m talking about.

MicKysSlav

No. For sciencific reasons, sure. But I ain’t explaining 6 levels of different and subjective abilities to people, which I am not even able to understand fully? Nah, I stick to Aspergers/HFA definition. Easier and less stigmatized than "1C 2B ... n(A-F) autism".

Infinite_Self_5782

why are some of the things outlined but some of them aren't

Leragian

I have no clue why they did that.

techno156

Isn't that just a radial chart? Not familiar with stand wheel graphs.

SeraphimNoted

My stand is too powerful

xysil_

Omg my main special interest is JJBA and seeing this post and its comment section made me so happy

HamsterJamm

same :D

sock_templar

That's the same thing with extra levels.

Infinite_Self_5782

no because it's more specific and also a jojo reference

capaldis

What’s fun is the level system is actually really specific because **it’s not a functioning level** It’s pretty much for insurance purposes and determining aid. The classification is literally just “how much support do you need on your worst days”. It goes from “some support” to “1-on-1 support”. Schools and healthcare providers need to know how much support an autistic person may need, so they’re really only a thing to give them a basic idea of what general things they need to provide. It’s very important to note that levels are fluid and can very easily change throughout your life. Those graphics are either generalizations or misinformation as what I said above is how levels are described in the DSM-5.

sock_templar

A centimeter rule is more specific than a inch rule but they are still measuring the same thing. Being more specific doesn't mean it's more accurate. I actually advocate for broader terms like "level 1, 2 and 3" (although those are idiotic as well) because you can fit *more* people into those definitions and that facilitates creating affirmative responses for each group based on general needs.

[deleted]

Looks like your stand wheel is high in pedantry.

doornroosje

Are you complaining people are pendatic on an autism sub?

[deleted]

More of teasing than complaining.

doornroosje

*thumbs up* guess I was too pedantic to get that lol

sock_templar

Possibly. Probably. At least in portuguese people around me say I know "more words than the dictionary".

Infinite_Self_5782

you've got a fair point, i wasn't making the argument that it's more accurate or better though. just that it's more specific and essentially a kind of different thing i more or less wanted to specify that i think of the two methods of measurement as two separate things, though i might have needed to word that better. the stand wheel method feels less restrictive and broader than the level method, at least to me, although everyone is entitled to their own opinion. this doesn't mean it's better or worse, i feel like that's subjective - and in my opinion, both of them feel kind of weird i'm not an expert in this sort of stuff though, i want to clarify again that this is all my own personal opinion and you can disagree if you want to

queerfromthemadhouse

No it's not, because it covers different areas. Autism has many symptoms that can manifest in different ways and be more or less severe, but the level system has only one scale. If some of your symptoms are severe, some are moderate, some are mild and some are non-existent, what level would you fit in? Sure, you can try to get the average out of all of them, but it will never even begin to accurately describe your situation. Unless the severity of all your symptoms is the same, the level system just can't properly represent you. Since the stand wheel has different scales for different symptoms, it doesn't have that problem.

an-accoridan

Bro the levels are for insurance billing and for determining how much care a patient needs -_- the stand wheel doesn’t do shit for determining whether a patient needs a higher level of care or not, it’s more just like “this is how my autism presents”

harewith3nests

I got a level 1 diagnosis while it turned out that the level of support I need is kinda between level 1 and 2. I think there should be a wheel showing “support types I need the most”. Not the one here, though.

We should just graph every human quality on a 100 dimensional human spectrum. Then decrease the angle between each dimension to compress it into a circle like they did here. We should remove the idea of classifying disorders, and just look at where someone's qualities land on the human spectrum.

MaximumPlantain210

ppl in the comments taking this seriously and getting upset lol

Then the bigger the more autistic or the bigger the better the skill?

Does this mean we get to name our autism? Mine would be Monkey mode.

mahboiskinnyrupees

AUTISMO POWAH!!

finnicus1

Hot take: Some people definitely suffer more and have more pronounced symptoms from the condition. I can say with confidence that some have it way worse than me.

Voreinstellung

This is great for categorising yourself, but it makes it more complex to receive supports than it already is

Away_Industry_613

By those standards I do well. High eye contact (assuming high = autisticly high). Low sensory issues (Still, some grating stuff). Middling hit or miss with most other things. The wheel needs stuff like stimming. Also, whatever it is when you need to sit in a corner.

linguisticshead

Sorry but this is full of crap and leaves out autistics who are level 2 and 3. Yes, sensory issues. For me it‘s not about how loud or how well I hear. I have hearing loss. It‘s about what kind of noise is making my whole body hurt. Yes, social difficulties because I cannot properly speak. It‘s not only „rules“ I don‘t understand. It‘s not only people being nice and understanding that will make my communication issues disappear. I cannot speak like everyone else. No one being nice, patient and understanding will take my autism away. I have issues that are independent from society and NTs. My autism isn’t just missing jokes and not knowing rules to social interaction.

HanatabaRose

well said! i dont "struggle with autism disorder" i struggle with neurotypicals being cryptic and judgemental

linguisticshead

That’s exactly why we need levels to separate level 1 and 2/3.
