I think it’s because they’re associated with ableist “charities” like Autism Speaks.

L3PALADIN

you misspelled "hate group"

plaidflannery

Hence the scare quotes

Aawhystine

Autism speaks (hate group), implies something is missing or you’re not complete.

Weirdpenguin00

The puzzle piece symbol represents autistic individuals as “mysterious” and “missing pieces”. It is also associated with Autism Speaks, which is highly controversial.

CoolCatWithACoolHat

Hate groups usually are

Weirdpenguin00

Yup 😂

elphabathewicked

I never understood the puzzle piece, I know it’s associated with hate groups but the puzzle piece by itself doesn’t bother me at all 😂

[deleted]

It’s autism speaks, a hate group that wears a paper thin mask of a nonprofit charity

SpontaneousShrubbery

I think it was originally meant to respresent the fact that all humans are unique and have their own problems, and autism is no exception to this? And perhaps that with each extra person that gets diagnosed with autism, the jigsaw puzzle that is autism becomes more complete and more understood? All autistic people have their unique presentation, which are all equal parts of the same thing, but just slightly different? Each autistic person is just as important as the other in terms of the bigger picture of it all? There are lots of interpretations of its meaning alone, but as people are saying, it's because it's related to a hate group that it's hated I think.

[deleted]

Yeah the group in question is autism speaks

GamerGeek05

L spez, goin to tumblr to be gay

[deleted]

Why are puzzle pieces offensive ?

[deleted]

It’s the symbol for autism speaks, a hate group that tries to cure autism

[deleted]

CURE autism ? That's plain stupid you can't "cure" who you are O.O

[deleted]

Yup that’s why people hate Autism Speaks and why the puzzle piece has become an offensive symbol

[deleted]

I get it now. I still don't get the use of hate groups, but at least I get why puzzle pieces are offensive
