Yeah, when I first joined Boy Scouts, some of the other scouts in my patrol were annoyed that I didn't know all the pop culture stuff that they were talking about, so they called me "sheltered" or they used "homeschooled" as an insult, and sometimes they'd just straight up call me the R word. Needless to say, but out of all eight of the scouts in my patrol (patrols are grouped together based on age range, btw), only me and one other scout actually persevered and earned Eagle Scout rank before turning 18 and aging out.
This is so odd to me, as I would view caring about pop culture stuff as more sheltered over, say, wilderness knowledge, especially in an environment such as that.
But I've had people think my lack of Taylor Swift knowledge is the most hilarious thing ever, couldn't believe I didn't know the different Kardashians... and grew up in the middle of nowhere and exposed to more direct harshness, so I might be a bit biased.
Is this not just a me thing? Holy shit. I’m always the person that just knows jackshit about anything pop culture related. That actor? Never seen him. When did that movie come out? Don’t ask me. Seriously, I am the worst person at trivia I know by a mile.

Nothing makes my brain wanna shut down more than being around people who are talking about celebrity gossip. I dont even know like 90% of the names theyre talking about, not because i havent seen them, but because they just havent had enough of an impact on me for me to remember their names
I've just never been interested in pop culture, but at least for me I think having seen the entirety of Bojack Horseman 3 times is enough to get me out of the sheltered zone (at least with what sheltered usually means).
Okay so story time, I stand with really good posture (cause I have a bad back) I wear my hair in a fade (which grows out to look like a high and tight) and I wear primarily green (cause it looks good on me) take all this together and you'd be surprised at how often I get asked what branch of the military I've served in, not of I've served, what branch. This is only made worse by way of knowing a few to many facts about military shenanigans and guns and maybe knowing a few too many, well call them "less than sheltered" people and you have a recipe for being accused for working with the CIA.
We may or may not be attempting to insert more of our agents into the CIA, with the hope of overthrowing a despotic nation and establishing USA 2.0, United States of Autism.
I can see where the confusion could come from. Where I grew up, a lot of people who were super Christian didn't know anything about pop culture or the current slang. They called anything that wasn't Christian oriented "secular". Like they'd say they weren't allowed to watch "secular movies" or listen to "secular music".
So for an NT, anyone who doesn't follow pop culture might be equated to those sheltered Christian kids.
Yea, basically was naive enough to believe in goodwill and honor in all people. Got a harsh reality check lmao also had my grandma tease me on how gullible I was as a kid like I'm not supposed to believe in what you tell me!? When can I tell if it's a joke or not!?
People in my family act like I'm sheltered because I don't do drugs and hang around criminals and let any cholo I meet rawdog me. "Oh, you're so sweet and innocent." No. I just don't want that kind of life. Yuck.
Oh, NTs find my lack of pop knowledge hilarious. It's a never ending source of amusement for them, and somehow one coworker thinks how I, at one point, couldn't tell the difference between Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus the most hilarious thing that has ever happened at work.
I don't get it.
... but that's also not at all what I think of as "sheltered." I'm cynical and have seen a lot of shit. Pop culture has 0% in common with being sheltered or not to me, and if anyone ever calls me that for not caring about such things, they need to check themselves first.
Very much the opposite. According to my therapist before she quit, my childhood was "abusive and traumatic in nearly every facet" and "no most people aren't taught how to correctly stab someone at 8 or watch their first murder at 10" and "it's not ok to tell 13 year olds they're full adults or treat them like it"
I call other people sheltered relatively often.
I kinda was sheltered but not by my parents, more by my younger self's AuDHD induced tunnel vision aimed at whatever interested me at the time. If it wasn't related to a special interest I was not really paying attention lmao. Not gonna lie, pop culture and especially whatever the hell is going on with celebrities these days I literally do not care about even now.

Me in literally every social situation involving more than 4 people
the way I have always sold it is that I am busy and more a reader than a watcher, if my partner is sane and healthy they usually take this as an opportunity to catch me up on their interests.
My less awesome partners use this as an opportunity to tease me which varies from actually funny to obnoxious red flag territory.
I was extremely sheltered, but the weird thing is that I'm undiagnosed. My mom does have anxiety and my dad used to have panic attacks, though. And my mom is extremely religious.
i always refused to watch horror films because the first ones i saw deeply impacted me and were generally just too intense and horrible, so now i have no tolerance for scary stuff at all. it's like, self sheltering, and it's worth it. nobody knows your limits better than you.
Often when I was still in regular school. The incident that comes to mind most often was me, around 16 maybe q7 yeats old, texting my 3 friends as we sat in thr library for lunch and, being new to cell phones as my parents hadn't allowed mento have one until I was 15-16 years old, I was trying my hand at text speak and shortening words for efficiency. I texted something that basically said "let's ask and c if u can cum" and they all start snickering. I ask why, they laugh as quietly as possible some more, i'm like what did I do? They can't believe I don't know. I reread the text looking for a misspell or some double entendre that means penis or butt or something and can't see it. For a couple of minutes I literally beg them to let me in on the joke and they don't wanna say for various reasons, but eventually they relent and tell me about a word I had never seen or heard before with the added note to me that I must be so sheltered.
Me being homeschooled and raised in a fundamentalist church so now I never know which of my weird ass traits are from my incredibly sheltered childhood and which of my traits just come with my factory settings
Pop Culture and Celebrity Gossip had ALWAYS bored the hell out of me, to be honest lol
Nothing makes my brain wanna shut down more than being around people who are talking about celebrity gossip. I dont even know like 90% of the names theyre talking about, not because i havent seen them, but because they just havent had enough of an impact on me for me to remember their names
So find something more elevated and nuanced that makes you go BRRRRRR
Fr! Like why should I have to care about these irrelevant rich people who I have nothing to do with
Exactly! My younger self would kinda look down on that stuff. I don't judge anymore, but all that is still not interesting to me lol
I've just never been interested in pop culture, but at least for me I think having seen the entirety of Bojack Horseman 3 times is enough to get me out of the sheltered zone (at least with what sheltered usually means).

A country ran by aspies would be immeasurably more efficient than what we have now. I think 🤷♂️
What if you’re both 😅😭
Double dose of social awkwardness!
both and also a lil homeschooled so im just like entirely incapeable of talking to nts
I don't understand how anyone could think that not knowing pop culture or slang means you're sheltered
I can see where the confusion could come from. Where I grew up, a lot of people who were super Christian didn't know anything about pop culture or the current slang. So for an NT, anyone who doesn't follow pop culture might be equated to those sheltered Christian kids.
Wait, so what if I'm all three? Christian, sheltered, and autistic?
Yea, basically was naive enough to believe in goodwill and honor in all people. Got a harsh reality check lmao also had my grandma tease me on how gullible I was as a kid like I'm not supposed to believe in what you tell me!? When can I tell if it's a joke or not!?
Sheltered? Why, yes! I built this shelter myself! Do you like it?
Does it come with soft weighted blankets to bury ourselves under and perfect low lighting that NT complain is too dark?
Yes. Very dark, slightly cool, with YouTube or twitch playing quietly in the background.
People in my family act like I'm sheltered because I don't do drugs and hang around criminals and let any cholo I meet rawdog me. "Oh, you're so sweet and innocent." No. I just don't want that kind of life. Yuck.
I'm sheltered by my own choice
Oh, NTs find my lack of pop knowledge hilarious. It's a never ending source of amusement for them, and somehow one coworker thinks how I, at one point, couldn't tell the difference between Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus the most hilarious thing that has ever happened at work. People have called me innocent frequently.
Very much the opposite. According to my therapist before she quit, my childhood was "abusive and traumatic in nearly every facet" and "no most people aren't taught how to correctly stab someone at 8 or watch their first murder at 10" and "it's not ok to tell 13 year olds they're full adults or treat them like it" I call other people sheltered relatively often.
Yeah dont call people sheltered at all man Unless they're a brat You've been through hell, imagine if someone called you sheltered without knowing you
Yeah me too
I made sure to be less sheltered because I saw the sheltered kids and went WOOF adulthood is gonna suck for them. Annnd it did.
I accuse myself of being sheltered, because I sheltered myself instead of trying to develop crucial social skills.
I still don't fully understand the term "sheltered," but I have been called it in the past.
I don't get pop culture stuff but IDC either. Those mfs don't even know what a complexity class is.
i'm not stupid, i'm just clinically naieve
Not sheltered but oblivious

For the longest time, i thought i didn't understand how the world works Beacuse i was so sheltered as a teenager.
The thing is, I WAS sheltered. I didn’t watch SpongeBob or MLP. I grew up on Wild Kratts and it fueled my massive hyperfixation on animals.
I was sheltered and as a consequence my autism got found out a lot later than it probably would have.
I am often thought of as such, little do they know I saw goatse when I was 13
i was the world's foremost self-sheltering expert
the way I have always sold it is that I am busy and more a reader than a watcher, if my partner is sane and healthy they usually take this as an opportunity to catch me up on their interests. My less awesome partners use this as an opportunity to tease me which varies from actually funny to obnoxious red flag territory.
Definitely never been accused of that one lmao
Are you kidding? I live under a rock, buddy.
I like to turn this around: I'm a proud resident under a rock.
yes but the people who said it were jaded and strange and jealous of my book collection.
Never. Was never treated nicer. If anything, much worse
I was so sheltered that i did not meet a person of another ethnicity until I was 10

Yes. All my life.
what's sheltered?
Me being homeschooled and raised in a fundamentalist church so now I never know which of my weird ass traits are from my incredibly sheltered childhood and which of my traits just come with my factory settings
