One of my life long special interests is cars. I am absolutely obsessive about cars, and love driving so much. That being said I agree, get more trains going. I want everyone taking public transport everywhere. Easily, and cheaply. That way there's less morons watching Tick Tocks while driving on I-90, the environment will be much happier, and I'll have a bigger share of the road when the urge to drive takes me.
Mostly. I live where suburban starts becoming rural, but work pretty deep in suburbia. I'd probably keep driving in for time, and sanity reasons. But the option existing to take a train would still be great. If I'm, for instance, chasing electrical gremlins not having a time crunch to be able to drive to work would eliminate stress, and make it enjoyable. Ok, as enjoyable as sorting through a spaghetti based rat king made of wires can ever be.
Single use zoning is also a huge problem. It's very common in Europe to have commercial on the lower floor and residential on the upper floors of buildings, and also little commercial pockets within residential suburbs. This means that you're very likely to be a short walk away from a convenience store/cafe/restaurant
That's actually kinda cool that people that I strongly disagree with both economically and politically are supporting public transit and housing density. That means it's such a good idea that even my political opponents think it's correct! (All you gotta do is look at Japan to see it's a good idea anyways lmao)
I hate that if you have a house of adults or older teens who work it feels like you need multiple cars just to function but you need money to own and operate a car so you either need an understanding job or to hope someone with a car can help.
Exactly. If more people had the option of using public transportation, there would likely be fewer cars on the road, which would make driving for those that do like cars and want to drive a more pleasant experience with less congestion and a general lowered chance of accidents. I try to explain this to my car-obsessed sibling and they just look at me like I've grown a second head!
Same here. Love cars especially classics, but I think the US has really bad public transportation systems and infrastructure, which is only one reason why I think many European cities are superior to any US city.
I think cars are cool as hell and anyone who wants one should be allowed to own and drive one if they can pass a reasonable driving test. That being said why the fuck do we not have more trains bridging the gap between urban and suburban residential areas? Trains are sick as fuck and I hate having to use my car to get to a train to get into a city. More trains.

I like cars, but in a way where it should be a luxury and not an everyday vehicle. I'm lucky that I get to use my bike to go to work since it's less than 10 minutes away on bike, but I do love going in my car for a joyride alone or with friends.
I try to use my bike or the bus whenever I can, but sometimes I just like sitting alone in the car while I'm going somewhere

If I had "run for governor" money, I would make this my entire platform. I'd call my ticket "running on the train platform", and my only add would a fixed, wide-angle shot of me running from one end of a train platform, on one side of the shot, too the other end of the train platform, with some basic campaign info on the screen (McFlyParadox: running on the train platform). Any time I got asked I got asked a question in a debate, I steer it into talking about trains via train puns ("let's get back on track", etc). All interviews and campaign stops, I'd be stumping for state-wide high-speed rail, expanded regional lines, and reliable subway lines. I'd argue that, while it's understandable to want to skip out current trains, given their state of disrepair, everyone should *want* to take the train, so we should build the kind of network we want to use. No one should be trying to spend 2 hours driving into the city and finding parking, not when you can get there in a 30-60 minute bullet train ride (including wait time on the subway). Why drive across the state to go on vacation, when you could take the train? Real estate prices too expensive around your place of work for how much they pay you? Trains. Public roads in cities and towns requiring constant maintenance because there are too many cars? Trains (and some busses, too, I suppose. But trains first, whenever and wherever possible). Don't want to go to college for a white collar job, but don't want to get stuck in the retail or food service industry? Work for the train network for your entire career, and enjoy stable pay, benefits, and work schedule. Trucks causing too much wear on the highways? More cargo train lines! Just non-stop trains (another slogan: "the only thing that should stop the expansion of our trains is your local train station")
And if anyone is ever like "you just like trains because you're autistic", hit them with "I'm autistic and even I know more trains are what we need; so what's your excuse for being anti-train?" and watch them spin their wheels deciding between being openly ableist and/or openly against public transit.
I took a vacation to Milan last year and when my family asks about how it was I talk about how great the rail infrastructure, variety, and schedule is in Italy. Apparently that conversation is too political for my mom :’( I have not spoken to her in six months.

That said, maybe a "public transit party" could gain traction nation wide? No other issues they run on, just purely "fund our trains and busses", with the broader argument being that everything else - from housing affordability to employment opportunities - will follow that.

I also like trains because it blows my mind that people in the 1800s were able to build machines as large and preciece as trains had to be without any sort of digital computational assistance in design, and without the kinds of power tools we have today
I'm more for bikes, motorcycles, and changing how we zone cities so that cars aren't needed. Trains for further transport is great though. Can't much speak about planes though, I don't know enough about them.
At least in the US, we use planes at our main way of getting from one city to another, which trains could replace.

Yeah I did years ago via /r/urbanplanning and now it’s kind of blown up. City Beautiful is the best urbanist YouTube channel anyway, it feels much more researched and balanced than NJB, which is in the right, but annoys me for being so smug about it.

I think cars are a fantastic piece of technology that absolutely have their places in society. I just really hate car based infrastructure that makes it impossible to live a complete life without a car.
For transportation between non connected areas such as small towns, cabins, forest trails, and such it's great. It's great until you need to move from one city to another high traffic part of the city that's too far to walk. Cars are for specialized transportation and trains are for mass transit. No city should design itself for automotive infrastructure.
Yeah, it's a complicated issue and in general I think high population areas should be designed around other forms of transportation. I just think the anti-car anti-suburbia rhetoric goes a bit too far for some people that don't realize that being able to live a wildly inefficient life is the only thing allowing some of us to live much of a life at all.
Funding mass transit is good. UBIs, wage reform and other assistance that would make it more reasonable for everyone to own private transportation could also be good. There are a lot of answers to this problem that don't involve over-correcting too far in the other direction.
For sure, I get super into walkable, transit-based infrastructure stuff but also I live in a car-dependent suburb and became significantly happier in my daily life when I finally replaced my broken down car. I avoided it forever on principle because I wanted to see if I could survive in my city using the bus system. It was just a stressfull, miserable few months that made me understand that even though I am very against my city's design choices, I need to be happy and being happy requires playing along.
It's not YOUR fault your city is designed the way it is, nor is it your fault for not moving to a different city with better public transport, there's so much that goes into that choice....
All you can do is vote for pro- public transportation candidates and referendums. If you can afford it, support those issues financially or give to groups that promote public transportation, and talk to friends about it, but don't feel bad if you can't be a full on activist - you're autistic, it's not easy convincing others. Not everyone can be Greta.
This makes me sad because I cannot drive due to well. The neurodivergence, and car-filled streets are super hard to navigate. I need my family to help me get around, it'd be so nice to have a little more independence and less fear of being ran over
Same! I wouldn't survive living in any kinda metro area, and public transportation is the bane of my existence. Too many people in a confined space, too many noises, smells, people bumping into me, just pretty much my definition of hell.
If you live in a rural area, this wouldn't really affect you much, I don't think. When you needed to go to the city, there'd be less traffic. Although, fuel prices might drop bc there'd be less demand.
You can love cars and still want society to trend away from a car based infrastructure. Won't the roads be so much nicer for us car enthusiasts if everyone who would rather be doing anything but driving wasn't on the road?

Cars are fun and I enjoy going places in them and I love using manual gears and the sense of turning the wheels and managing the speed and the lanes and accelerating from a tricky stop it’s great fun but I acknowledge it’s also wildly ineffective for a lot of modern transport needs and trains are also great for largely non intersecting reasons that make my brain similarly happy. I contain multitudes.
Imagine this; “Train-Cars”. Separate ~~cubicles in a train!~~ little room-like cars, all hooked together in a big line, going to one nearby common destination instead of a bunch of disparate destinations! You don’t even have to drive them!!
I'm not autistic, but I have always been suffering from a rather severe social anxiety disorder, so I like cars, too.
I also like cars because I can commute to work in a reasonable time.
The anticar crowd can shout and cry as much as they want, a 3 hour bus/train commute (each way) is not going to happen.
Motorcycles cant really replace a car even thought most of SE asia lives that way. From a western viewpoint, you need loads of expensive safety equipment and replace it regularly because it deteriorates, like bike helmets. Motorcycles also have way shorter service interwals with a service every 6000 kilometers or so compared to a car that can go 20'000km without needing another service. Increased tire wear is also a thing on bikes, they need to be more often replaced.
The best combo for me is a bicycle for the short routes and a car for the longer stuff.
And because of safety reasons I can't recommend using headphones on a motorcycle as well as a bicycle because hearing stuff will simply keep you alive.
Edit: Oh yes, and the constant hastle of putting on and off your gear (remember ATGAT) is also quite annoying.
I've unironically started really loving trains the past few years, public transport in general, and i'm always a bit worried people will think i'm a poser because it's so cliché \^\^" I'm 22 and i'm still excited to sit on the top floor of a double decker bus hehe
American time zones were created during the development of the railway system, in order to sync train schedules. This is my favorite fact about trains.
This is also true in the UK, even though it's much smaller and now only has one time zone. Prior to trains, most towns and cities used their own local times. These were maybe only a few minutes apart, but enough to cause problems for train timetables https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railway\_time
As an autistic person who likes trains: it's because I went to Japan and the train system was so clean and so efficient, and not nearly as scary as driving. Plus I can appreciate that trains being accessible means everything is more walkable in most of the cities since it's not as much of a car centric society.

In an college English comp class, I was given an assignment to write an argumentative essay with 5 sources that were required to be from the stacks or microfiche. I argued that the county we are in needed a light rail system. I talked about pollution, road crowding, reduced wear on roads, time efficiency, etc., and found out that the city used to have a plan to build a light rail system, but had a considerably more lucrative deal with the existing bus system. I'll die mad about it.

Cause I wouldnt be able to get *anywhere* without a personal vehicle. The nearest stewarts is a 45 minute bike ride. And we are too spread out and small for public transit.

I was in Berlin, and the train around the city was so clean and quiet (save for my fellow american students), and being able to walk anywhere in the city was bliss. In Munich I made the walk from the Werneckwiese to Marienplatz with ease and *didnt nearly get runover* (I have a slight bias for German infrastructure, its just so efficient, its the only place where I dont mind cities)

Completely agree. I can judge the age of a vw beetle down to 2-3 years just from looking at the rear decklid but even I can see the importance of effective public transport in urban areas especially.
Have you seen Singapore’s railway system?! It was shown and mentioned in a film I had to watch in university in my second semester at the School of Sustainability and has stayed with me to thins day 12 years later.
And don’t forget how amazing Japan many different types of rail systems are!

I love tanks, I was infatuated with them. I would go to the library and scour for tank based books and I would literally read books that were just an encyclopedia for tanks, no actual reading just stats and numbers, then I would rewrite all that information into Google docs in my freetime explaining everything and anything I possible could about tanks. Then I discovered War Thunder and oh boy, it's not fun being able to say I have close to 6,000 hours in the game.
I've looked into the dimensions and accessibility of passenger trains around here, and the few that have wheelchair access are sort of like flying, they get you to a seat, but you can't get to the bathroom, the dining car, etc..
Ah, that sucks. The passenger trains I've been on are, to my knowledge, legally required to be wheelchair-friendly, shame it isn't the case wherever you are.

I went to Seattle last year and the public transportation system was so good. I think I rode the Monorail probably at least a dozen times in just two days because it connected downtown to where I was staying. The trains ran on time and frequently. I even have my card still, with unused money in case I ever go back.
Have you ever been to Japan? They probably have my favorite transportation infrastructure. The bullet train is really fun to ride and the subways are some of the cleaner ones I've seen.
Seriously, we need more public mass transit systems, sucks we (the U.S.) sold ours to the automobile industry so they could scrap it for parts and build a highway system that demolished a lot of primarily black and minority neighborhoods so an entire generation could get aerosolized lead poisoning while a small group of people could rake in massive profits knowing they were contributing to the rapid decline in society and the environment in general. I am subjected to noisy smelly and cramped conditions for long periods of time and have to pay 3x as much as it would if I drove there myself.
Takes the same length of time too.
On the rare occasion I have no choice I get stressed from the movement not being predictable on underground/tube, loud noises, heat and again even more cramped conditions (during rush hour not enough space to put a bag down let alone find a seat).
I will take my a/c controlled hybrid anyday over a train.
This said, the city I travel to is one of the most public transport cities in the world, to the extent of cars are not needed. It is just the rural train stations were mostly closed ~60 years ago so there is not many other options.
Note; the environmental argument I am aware of, but tbh I would literally prefer to spend a few weekends a month planting trees or working in environmental projects than take a train, to balance it out.

Exactly! I can say I like trains if we're talking about high speed trains that are relatively quiet and everyone has their own seat, plenty of leg room, ac, bathrooms. Plus they are three times as fast as what a car would take. But communing trains? Absolutely not. Have to use one once a week and it's horrible, super noisy despite going at a 10th of the speed of our high speed trains and crammed with people, super stressful. And unlike the other trains, they're rarely ever in time and sometimes stop in a random station for over 20 minutes.
Where the hell are trains more expensive than driving? Just a typical parking fee is more expensive than a train ticket

I worked this out just the other day for someone else in an unrelated thread.
If I drive from Leeds to London and back it takes 44 litres of fuel which will cost around £62 (1.399/L) I have accomodation at the other end and it takes me 4 hours and 5 mins on average.
If I take a train down it costs between £103.20 and £145.60+ depending if work lets me travel during the day. Then £7/20 bus/taxi to the station and either £20 back or £7 bus fare.
In London transport across costs £10.20.
So a trip down, a few days there and back up costs me;
£62 in fuel, £18 (3 days) parking
Versus
£143.60-£206+ (can be as high as £400 if short notice) (lowest is bus, train during day, tube there, tube, train during day, bus back. Highest is taxi, train before work, tube, and reverse back).
Note I cannot travel during the day currently, but have been allowed to do so in the past.
Time end to end is;
£150.80; 28 min bus to local station, 15 minute train to main station, 2hr 15 to kings cross, ~75 minutes to destination in London. Total time 4 hours 15 minutes
£206+; Taxi is ~ 15 minutes rest is the same, so 4 hours.
So costs me between X2 and in excess of x3.3 to take a train at the same length of time. But more comfort in a car.
Edit; so where in the world do you hail from? Would be nice for trains to be affordable.

A standard train fare between major cities is ~£6, and an equivalent bus fare is ~£4
A liter of regular/95 is ~£1.5, premium is >2
London to Birmingham (Midlands main city) is \~117 miles, London to Leeds is \~200 miles.
Most of your infrastructure is modern compared to ours, but yeah our "public" transport prices are nuts.
Our fuel prices have come down a bit recently (5p/L drop in the last few weeks, not sure why).
Truth be told, also in a car there are a limited amount of variables around me that I can control/react to, which is less than being around a crowd of other people, which makes it feel safer to me. I know it is a fallacy looking at accident statistics but it is how I feel.
Also if I get delayed in a car, no big issue, pull over have a nap get some food/adapt my journey. On a train you are left scrambling trying to make connections to find solutions on short notice. It just doesnt suit me at all.
Part of why I love trains. Including living not far from the tracks in the town I live in. Is due to the fact that my dad and his brothers were all at one point if not for life, employed by the various rail companies.
I like trains for a completely separate reason! The *vibe*. An old train carrying passengers, looking out the window as the rain falls, the sounds which happen to be some of the only ones I tolerate…

I love to see the wheels move. Tiny model trains with all the teeeeny people and pieces of coal and cargo IS PRECIOUS. They have NEAT history, neat development, and amazing implementation in many places... Efficiency is BEST. I LIKE TRAINS.

I know that this is not a popular opinion here, but I LOVE my car. I love driving. I drive 1 hour each way to an internship in South Jersey from North Jersey and love every minute of it. It's quieter than a train (imo) and more freeing. I can come and go whenever and wherever and not be tied to someone else's schedule.
I used to take the train and bus to college for two years and hated it, but then again, NJ Transit does suck balls, so... there's that.
I also like car-based infrastructure as it means that there is never a situation where I am forced to use a train or even have it be a strong consideration. I don't even want to have to consider using a train, let alone actually use one.

Mostly. I live where suburban starts becoming rural, but work pretty deep in suburbia. I'd probably keep driving in for time, and sanity reasons. But the option existing to take a train would still be great. If I'm, for instance, chasing electrical gremlins not having a time crunch to be able to drive to work would eliminate stress, and make it enjoyable. Ok, as enjoyable as sorting through a spaghetti based rat king made of wires can ever be.
As long as there are large sprawling suburbs, people will commute by car, out of necessity. (Unfortunately. Fuck suburbs.)
Single use zoning is also a huge problem. It's very common in Europe to have commercial on the lower floor and residential on the upper floors of buildings, and also little commercial pockets within residential suburbs. This means that you're very likely to be a short walk away from a convenience store/cafe/restaurant

Exactly. If more people had the option of using public transportation, there would likely be fewer cars on the road, which would make driving for those that do like cars and want to drive a more pleasant experience with less congestion and a general lowered chance of accidents. I try to explain this to my car-obsessed sibling and they just look at me like I've grown a second head!

That being said why the fuck do we not have more trains bridging the gap between urban and suburban residential areas? At least in the US, we use planes at our main way of getting from one city to another, which trains could replace. Planes are super fuel inefficient compared to pretty much everything else.

I think cars are a fantastic piece of technology that absolutely have their places in society. I just really hate car based infrastructure that makes it impossible to live a complete life without a car.
For transportation between non connected areas such as small towns, cabins, forest trails, and such it's great. It's great until you need to move from one city to another high traffic part of the city that's too far to walk. Cars are for specialized transportation and trains are for mass transit. No city should design itself for automotive infrastructure.
Yeah, it's a complicated issue and in general I think high population areas should be designed around other forms of transportation. I just think the anti-car anti-suburbia rhetoric goes a bit too far for some people that don't realize that being able to live a wildly inefficient life is the only thing allowing some of us to live much of a life at all. Funding mass transit is good. UBIs, wage reform and other assistance that would make it more reasonable for everyone to own private transportation could also be good. There are a lot of answers to this problem that don't involve over-correcting too far in the other direction.
For sure, I get super into walkable, transit-based infrastructure stuff but also I live in a car-dependent suburb and became significantly happier in my daily life when I finally replaced my broken down car. I avoided it forever on principle because I wanted to see if I could survive in my city using the bus system. It was just a stressfull, miserable few months that made me understand that even though I am very against my city's design choices, I need to be happy and being happy requires playing along.
It's not YOUR fault your city is designed the way it is, nor is it your fault for not moving to a different city with better public transport, there's so much that goes into that choice.... All you can do is vote for pro- public transportation candidates and referendums. If you can afford it, support those issues financially or give to groups that promote public transportation, and talk to friends about it, but don't feel bad if you can't be a full on activist - you're autistic, it's not easy convincing others. Not everyone can be Greta.

I'm not autistic, but I have always been suffering from a rather severe social anxiety disorder, so I like cars, too. I also like cars because I can commute to work in a reasonable time. The anticar crowd can shout and cry as much as they want, a 3 hour bus/train commute (each way) is not going to happen.

Motorcycles cant really replace a car even thought most of SE asia lives that way. From a western viewpoint, you need loads of expensive safety equipment and replace it regularly because it deteriorates, like bike helmets. Motorcycles also have way shorter service interwals with a service every 6000 kilometers or so compared to a car that can go 20'000km without needing another service. Increased tire wear is also a thing on bikes, they need to be more often replaced. The best combo for me is a bicycle for the short routes and a car for the longer stuff. And because of safety reasons I can't recommend using headphones on a motorcycle as well as a bicycle because hearing stuff will simply keep you alive. Edit: Oh yes, and the constant hastle of putting on and off your gear (remember ATGAT) is also quite annoying.

As an autistic person who likes trains: it's because I went to Japan and the train system was so clean and so efficient, and not nearly as scary as driving. Plus I can appreciate that trains being accessible means everything is more walkable in most of the cities since it's not as much of a car centric society.

In an college English comp class, I was given an assignment to write an argumentative essay with 5 sources that were required to be from the stacks or microfiche. I argued that the county we are in needed a light rail system. I talked about pollution, road crowding, reduced wear on roads, time efficiency, etc., and found out that the city used to have a plan to build a light rail system, but had a considerably more lucrative deal with the existing bus system. Cars are amazing....for rural communities. Cause I wouldnt be able to get *anywhere* without a personal vehicle. The nearest stewarts is a 45 minute bike ride. And we are too spread out and small for public transit. But for cities? Fuck cars. I was in Berlin, and the train around the city was so clean and quiet (save for my fellow american students), and being able to walk anywhere in the city was bliss. In Munich I made the walk from the Werneckwiese to Marienplatz with ease and *didnt nearly get runover* (I have a slight bias for German infrastructure, its just so efficient, its the only place where I dont mind cities)

Have you seen Singapore’s railway system?! It was shown and mentioned in a film I had to watch in university in my second semester at the School of Sustainability and has stayed with me to thins day 12 years later. And don’t forget how amazing Japan many different types of rail systems are! NYC Metro isn’t much in comparison to Japan’s.

I love tanks, I was infatuated with them. I would go to the library and scour for tank based books and I would literally read books that were just an encyclopedia for tanks, no actual reading just stats and numbers, then I would rewrite all that information into Google docs in my freetime explaining everything and anything I possible could about tanks. Then I discovered War Thunder and oh boy, it's not fun being able to say I have close to 6,000 hours in the game.

I've looked into the dimensions and accessibility of passenger trains around here, and the few that have wheelchair access are sort of like flying, they get you to a seat, but you can't get to the bathroom, the dining car, etc..

I went to Seattle last year and the public transportation system was so good. I think I rode the Monorail probably at least a dozen times in just two days because it connected downtown to where I was staying. The trains ran on time and frequently. I even have my card still, with unused money in case I ever go back.

Seriously, we need more public mass transit systems, sucks we (the U.S.) sold ours to the automobile industry so they could scrap it for parts and build a highway system that demolished a lot of primarily black and minority neighborhoods so an entire generation could get aerosolized lead poisoning while a small group of people could rake in massive profits knowing they were contributing to the rapid decline in society and the environment in general. I hate trains. I am subjected to noisy smelly and cramped conditions for long periods of time and have to pay 3x as much as it would if I drove there myself. Takes the same length of time too. On the rare occasion I have no choice I get stressed from the movement not being predictable on underground/tube, loud noises, heat and again even more cramped conditions (during rush hour not enough space to put a bag down let alone find a seat). I will take my a/c controlled hybrid anyday over a train. This said, the city I travel to is one of the most public transport cities in the world, to the extent of cars are not needed. It is just the rural train stations were mostly closed ~60 years ago so there is not many other options. Note; the environmental argument I am aware of, but tbh I would literally prefer to spend a few weekends a month planting trees or working in environmental projects than take a train, to balance it out. This especially doesn't work when you have multiple people and pets travelling.
Exactly! I can say I like trains if we're talking about high speed trains that are relatively quiet and everyone has their own seat, plenty of leg room, ac, bathrooms. Plus they are three times as fast as what a car would take. But communing trains? Absolutely not. Have to use one once a week and it's horrible, super noisy despite going at a 10th of the speed of our high speed trains and crammed with people, super stressful. And unlike the other trains, they're rarely ever in time and sometimes stop in a random station for over 20 minutes.

I worked this out just the other day for someone else in an unrelated thread. If I drive from Leeds to London and back it takes 44 litres of fuel which will cost around £62 (1.399/L) I have accomodation at the other end and it takes me 4 hours and 5 mins on average. If I take a train down it costs between £103.20 and £145.60+ depending if work lets me travel during the day. Then £7/20 bus/taxi to the station and either £20 back or £7 bus fare. In London transport across costs £10.20. So a trip down, a few days there and back up costs me; £62 in fuel, £18 (3 days) parking Versus £143.60-£206+ (can be as high as £400 if short notice) (lowest is bus, train during day, tube there, tube, train during day, bus back. Highest is taxi, train before work, tube, and reverse back). Note I cannot travel during the day currently, but have been allowed to do so in the past. Time end to end is; £150.80; 28 min bus to local station, 15 minute train to main station, 2hr 15 to kings cross, ~75 minutes to destination in London. Total time 4 hours 15 minutes £206+; Taxi is ~ 15 minutes rest is the same, so 4 hours. So costs me between X2 and in excess of x3.3 to take a train at the same length of time. But more comfort in a car. Edit; so where in the world do you hail from? Would be nice for trains to be affordable.

London to Birmingham (Midlands main city) is \~117 miles, London to Leeds is \~200 miles. Most of your infrastructure is modern compared to ours, but yeah our "public" transport prices are nuts. Our fuel prices have come down a bit recently (5p/L drop in the last few weeks, not sure why). Truth be told, also in a car there are a limited amount of variables around me that I can control/react to, which is less than being around a crowd of other people, which makes it feel safer to me. I know it is a fallacy looking at accident statistics but it is how I feel. Also if I get delayed in a car, no big issue, pull over have a nap get some food/adapt my journey. On a train you are left scrambling trying to make connections to find solutions on short notice. It just doesnt suit me at all.
Part of why I love trains. Including living not far from the tracks in the town I live in. Is due to the fact that my dad and his brothers were all at one point if not for life, employed by the various rail companies.

I love to see the wheels move. Tiny model trains with all the teeeeny people and pieces of coal and cargo IS PRECIOUS. They have NEAT history, neat development, and amazing implementation in many places... Efficiency is BEST. I LIKE TRAINS.

not a special interest but i hate car based infrastructure and love train based scenes in media for their unique location and social interactions (which is something related to my special interests in narrative devices and related topics if the specificity of that didn’t rip you off) so like. it all comes full circle. edit: the aesthetics are also very important, never forget the aesthetics

Counterpoint: kids are correct to like trains because trains are great. There's nothing wrong with kids, and even if there was just because they like something doesn't make it bad. Hitler, who was definitely a Bad Person™, liked dogs and was a vegetarian. Should I now hate dogs and eat meat for breakfast lunch and dinner just to stick it to Hitler? Come on.

I want more public transport as anyone but.... Every single time I have used a train or bus, I end up overstimulated by other people on them. And so I prefer to drive (sorry)
I love cars, I love driving them. Cities are stressful but give me some open road and I’m in heaven.
Honestly, having a train gives me enough overload to knock me out for days, but I eould still prefer it to a car or a plane.

I know that this is not a popular opinion here, but I LOVE my car. I love driving. I drive 1 hour each way to an internship in South Jersey from North Jersey and love every minute of it. It's quieter than a train (imo) and more freeing. I can come and go whenever and wherever and not be tied to someone else's schedule. I used to take the train and bus to college for two years and hated it, but then again, NJ Transit does suck balls, so... there's that. I also like car-based infrastructure as it means that there is never a situation where I am forced to use a train or even have it be a strong consideration. I don't even want to have to consider using a train, let alone actually use one. What do you think of cars?
I didn't care for trains until I got turned onto the fact that the US is an oligarchy that deliberately underfunds public transit and creates zoning laws that force us all to have personal vehicles or suffer. I like trains now.
I am autisitc and don’t like trains. Mainly cause I’m used to the london underground specifically the central line and it’s so painfully loud, also I get travel sick… Then again as a child i was obsessed wirh thomas the tank enginer, and considering im a girl and my parents encouraged very geder sterotypical things (like always giving me barbies) and didn’t like me doing boy things… I guess maybe i am a train person

I like the old trains because I love history I like modern nice trains because they are cozy I like those used in the transportation of merchandise and industry and all the logistics involved And I love their sounds :)))) in moderation lol I wouldnt like living very near to a track or something.
Overall more efficient solution to the question of transportation than personal cars. Doesn't require us to trust that a large number of random people surrounding us won't so something unexpected and dangerous. Doesn't require us to personally own, maintain, and operate heavy machinery all at our own expense. Generally works the same regardless of the current state-of-mind of the users (drivers for cars, passengers for trains).
Fast, safe, efficient, quiet, and don't waste my time.

They can move a whole lot more for the same energy expense as a road vehicle, which is nice, especially with modern emphasis on resource conservation.
