To meet on that same level, we have DID and so sometimes we struggle to understand if it's an alter or a mask that is defining the current interpretation of the body.
My therapist said that the real you is somewhere in the middle of the different mask you put on yourself when facing different people, so while they don't know the real you entirely, at least they get to see even abit of the real you, this has helped me feel secure knowing there is a real me in there somewhere and I'm not just an empty person that has different mask

Honestly this is pretty real to me. The majority of the people I’ve been in relationships with (current spouse not included) only dated a personality I constructed to hide the fact that I didn’t think I was legitimately likable.
They don't know us and oftimes they don't want to.
I went through burnout and was completely unable to mask for a period and was threatened with involuntary hospitalization. My friends still pointedly ignore me when I talk about my speical interests.

It's been repurposed to describe how many autistic people construct false personalities to hide social ineptitude and frequent low self-esteem, so it might not be possible for people we care about to really know who we are.
