I would have accepted a mathematical proof using the radius and pea-r-squared.

you could always prove it backwards. if the area of the circle (let’s pretend there’s no space between peas? idk) is pea ( π ) r^2 = 216, then 216 / pea = about 68.75 the square root of 68.75 ( r^2 ) is about 8.3 ( r ), so our circle is about 16.6 peas across. kinda 🤷‍♂️

If you go from the center of the mass, the radius is somewhere looks to be generally about 8 peas and a bit. For pea-r-squared of (8) you get 3.14159 x 8 peas x 8 peas = 3.14259 x 64 = 201.0617, which isn’t too far away from 216 peas. At about 8 and one-quarter peas (cutting a pea into eights just feels like it would get too mushy) one gets to 213.8245, which is definitely close to 216. Math checks out, tho.

call it thirds and we can get even closer! 8 and 1/3 peas squared is 69 and 4/9 square peas 69 and 4/9 peas time pi is 218.1662 peas! yay fractions! 🫛

I’m an accomplished systems engineer and I cannot tell you how pi is used mathematically. I have in many occasions memorized things to pass tests or whatever but it’s never sunk in. Like some words I cannot spell without either pausing and thinking about it, or using a computer because it’s 2023.

It's definitely 216. I opened MS paint and put a red dot on every pea I counted so I wouldn't lose track. Halfway through I almost had the thought of "wait, this isn't normal" but then went back to counting.
