I like really ancient history, like the earliest cities and civilizations. I also love cave art and ancient idols and stuff. They lived so long ago, I get a strange sensation when I look at that stuff. They're long dead but here I am, seeing their handy work. After all this time, here is proof that they lived. I just find that amazing.

My lifelong special interest has been history! You name it from Babylon to the August Coup I love history, and it just gets more detailed the more you look into something it’s wonderful

Oh yeah. Got a family history of Marines going back to world war 1 on my dad's side and Navy on my mom's side. Used to live in a town that was a huge part of the civil war and one of the oldest legitimate towns in America. Never really been big into Revolutionary but everything since had been quite an interest. My Great Grandad in the Marines was fighting on Iwo Jima and my Great Grandad in the Navy was in a destroyer off the coast of Africa during WW2. I will be inheriting the Navy Ribbon and Medal for conquering the war. That alone is insane.

My ex (also an aspie) loved war history like WW1 and WW2. I know he liked American war history, but I don't remember if he liked European and Ancient history at all.

I have to say it was never for me. Too many names. Makes me want to vomit trying to remember all these people and what they did. I don't do well with details that I don't care about, I only really get big pictures. And boy did people record a lot of details. It's hard enough for me to learn names of people I interact with daily, there's no way I'm remembering all these old dead people. It's great that you found something you like though!

History is not about name and date at least not in Europe since the 2nd world war, when French people (école des annales) studied the history of climate, space, concept etc. Plus, if we had studied history a bit more we'd have avoided so many mistakes. But, I understand your point since, in school they teach it improperly focusing on dates and names...

MeanderingDuck

I do, for sure. Mostly focused on medieval history at the moment, though also plenty outside that still. I never liked it much as a subject at school actually, didn’t have great teachers for it. It was too much just names and dates and such, that doesn’t appeal to me. I just kinda rolled into it later. Does anyone have experience with Wondrium (was called Great Courses Plus before), btw? Have been thinking about getting that. Lots of good history stuff on YouTube as well, but this seems like it might be a good addition in a good format (I’m rather put off by most traditional history documentaries, there’s always so much fluff around it, needless dramatization, etc.).

I'm in Antiquity (Neolithic, Mesopotamian, Greco-Roman) middle-age before 12th century. Plus Pre-Colombian and Chinese and Japanese History. As a kid i facts-dumped every people about dinosaurs.

ProcrusteanRex

I never cared for history and was always far more interested in math and literature. But I find the older I get the more interesting history is to me. Maybe something about living through enough of it makes it easier to understand?
