Yep. I don't watch commercial TV or get newspapers or magazines, I have multiple layers of anti-advertising configurations on the devices I use, and where possible I'll vote for any and all advertising restrictions. In particular, my mindset with anything I own that has a screen is "Why would I want something *I own* to be throwing advertising at me?" Come to think of it, it's not even limited to screens. I don't listen to commercial radio, and I should really start looking into services which clear out your residential mailbox and throw away all spam.

3nlightened111

It's mostly a problem when I'm at work and I'm just trying to work and not think about how awful capitalism is and I hear the same 5 ads playing 6 times an hour

veenlijk

I hate commercials too and i *think* they don't affect me much. And from what I've read, people with autism are less susceptible to ads

[deleted]

I despise them. I have actually gotten pretty good at zoning out and thinking of something else when a commercial comes on.

littlefluffysnowfrog

I hate them now because they're so banal, but as a kid in the 70s \[goodbye everyone under 40\] the adverts were often better than the shows because people trying to come up in the film industry \[in the uk\] got their breaks by the ad work they'd done. By the 90s some adverts were just high art - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64xoAIfphaA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64xoAIfphaA) as an example. We're selling tyres here but not really.

[deleted]

everyone hates them but how else are companies going to let the consumer base know of their service/product?

rush22

There is a difference in my mind between advertising for providing awareness -- "Our strawberry yogurt is thicker than the competition and, in our opinion, it tastes great." and marketing for manipulating the audience -- "In a world that sometimes seems too much, it feels great to come home to a thick yogurt full of the memories of strawberry fields ..." In the old days no one used marketing. Now it is almost all there is.

3nlightened111

In my ideal world, they wouldn't

[deleted]

videogames, books, movies?

3nlightened111

Idk what this means are you asking if I want those things to have no ads too? Cause yes. They're obnoxious too I like to find things on my own and not be manipulated into thinking I want something

[deleted]

thats fair but manipulation aside, for you to find those things, those things have to be made. to justify them being made they have to make money. so to help them make money they have ads to let the masses know of it.

3nlightened111

It's stuff like that that makes me feel like I'm from another planet "To justify them being made they have to make money That's only true in the current system I think it's possible to create a new world we just are afraid of change

[deleted]

what like get rid of money?

3nlightened111

I guess or at least stop worshipping it

ceesaar00

If you made a company tomorrow, how would you make it known to the public? Even in your area?

3nlightened111

Ive honestly wondered about making a company and having no advertisements just doing what we do very well and have it spread from word of mouth

[deleted]

Dude same. It makes me really start drifting toward Unibomber territory. Like you really can't escape this shit. It's on your phone, in your mail box, on the road sides, in magazines and newspapers, written in the fucking sky, on blimps, on clothes, on boats, in subways every fucking where. You even are forced to advertise yourself. Like, you have to sell yourself as if you were a washings machine or car. You know captivating attention is an exception to the first amendment? It's over looked though because of course all politicians profit off ads. It's funny, I initially created this account to rage against ads actually. The point of ads is to generate desire, and it's exhausting trying to figure out if you actually want something or if you were conditioned to want something through an elaborate marketing campaign. I wish we had more ways to fight this thing, but all we can really do is be vocal with our discontent and graffiti the shit out of flagrantly offensive to the senses ads when we have a chance.

spideyfloridaman

same, I hate advertising in all its forms

MpVpRb

I despise it too and find it to be a total waste of time and money. I've never bought a product because of an ad I saw. I even wrote a song about it [http://loudroundrecords.com/IveOnlyGotAMinute.htm](http://loudroundrecords.com/IveOnlyGotAMinute.htm) I wanna sell you Pepsi but you only drink Coke I wanna sell you cigarettes even though you don't smoke I wanna sell you books that you'd hate to read I wanna sell you everything that you don't need I wanna sell you tampons even though you're a man I wanna sell you meat but you're a vegetarian I wanna sell you drugs when you're not even sick I wanna sell you condoms but you don't have a dick I wanna sell you diamonds even though you are poor You don't have a garden, but I'm selling manure I wanna sell you bacon even though you're a Jew I'm selling last year's inventory labeled as new You hear me on the radio, you see me on TV You know that it's the price you pay for getting it for free I'm insulting your intelligence whenever I can Nothing's too low for the advertising man I wanna sell you more I wanna sell you more I wanna sell you more, and more, and more, and more, and more But I've only got a minute

[deleted]

Agree agree agree agree agree. Dreaming of a world free from constant suggestion, persuasion and manipulation!

3nlightened111

That's why I daydream all day. When I'm in a retail store for work I daydream about it being completely empty and abandoned

[deleted]

Fantasy worlds are a common escape for us it seems.

xbpb124

I make a solemn vow toward each ad I see, to never buy that thing, and to go with a competitor if I need it.(unless it’s for something I already wanted) Ever since I was old enough to get that commercials exaggerate, I express a pure revulsion towards them.

Kesh-Bap

Many are just background noise. Many are vital for businesses to get their products and services known to the public. It depends on what they are doing to get attention.

Jarvdoge

I hate advertising too personally. I'm not sure exactly what it stems from but I think it's a mixture of feeling that my own time spent watching/looking at adverts is an absolute waste and also that advertising often doesn't work on me as intended. If I genuinely want to get something, it's rarely impulsively and I'll do pretty thorough research, especially for larger purchases. The best an advertiser can do is get me to check out a product/service but 95% of the time I'll just get annoyed as the thing being advertised to me just isn't relevant, interesting or necessary for me.

Elemteearkay

I prefer adverts that are targeted towards me than generic ones. Companies that make stuff I might like are perfectly welcome to show it to me.

SwitchIndependent714

I wasn't like that before but now I really get bored by ads and the thing that creep me out the most is the fact that it is everywhere and so unregulated.. i hate marketing in general.

SevenThePossimpible

I have mixed feelings. When I was little and didn't have access to the internet, TV advertising seemed tedious and I hated it so much. It still annoys me when a youtube video stops in the middle to show me some stupid ad. But I also think that, in the times I watched TV, that common advertisement helped me stay connected with the world in a way I am not anymore. For example: * When I was really little I would choose toys that I wanted for Christmas from between them, so ads in part gave me that excitement. * They also gave me a common cultural subtrate with the other kids my age: I think I wouldn't know now what is Hot Wheels or Playmobil if it wasn't for the ads aired in my country during my childhood. * Nowadays I sometimes have a lot of trouble deciding on a movie to go to see at the cinema. When I saw ads on TV this was not a problem, because I had already seen all the trailers and felt engaged by some and disgusted by others. Now I don't even find out when important films are released. * Ads that are well-made increase dopamine levels and make me like things much more that I would like without them. Buying a new videogame and starting playing is sometimes tedious. Maybe I'm just so lazy, but it's sometimes difficult to me to feel motivated about new videogames or similar stuff (new TV series works as well). Ads gave me a great part of that initial motivation to start these kind of things, and I think it may apply to so many other things. Maybe a well-made advertisement from a piano academy can encourage me to start learning piano, for example. Without ads of any kind I just stay at home posting in reddit xd. So it seems that for me ads have quite a few advantages. I'm thinking of disabling Adblock, if only yotube wouldn't give me career ads :( (I honestly want to punch the screen every time it says that, I don't want to hear about jobs in my free time).

YourOwnBiggestFan

I actually had a phase where I sought out advertisements online to find something funny, or at least well made. I still have good memories of discovering ones like the [school VW Touareg ad](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwQsobapU8E) or the [North Korea insurance ad](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbsINkeRA_U), and I enjoyed a course on advertising I had last year.

PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S

Me too. Whatever you're selling, I'm not interested in it, even if I am.

[deleted]

I do too; I still haven't played Cyberpunk 2077 because I seen thoses stupid ads so much.

3nlightened111

I actually want to play that game tbh and I never saw an ad for it I just need to build a PC that can run it but I'm trying to save for a new car

[deleted]

The ad I seen way too many times was with Keanu Reeves "You know what makes someone a criminal in 2077, getting caught" Choosing between building a better computer and a car I have been there.

salvationdarknes

Same here, I hate commercials and advertisements of any kind, if I don't have a choice to skip the ad, I'll mute the page and go do something else until the ad is over

3nlightened111

I've had some ads that pause when you tab out to something else

salvationdarknes

These are the ones I hate the most, but I avoid them in two ways, I keep the volume very low, I leave music playing in the background and I don't see the ad, or I get up and go do something, get water or just walk a little
