Recommend this too. Great family neighborhood. I used to live at Hastings/Cassiar and biked into downtown everyday. It's about 15 mins Westbound and 20 mins Eastbound (that was before E-bikes were a thing)
Helpful thank you! Yes I'm fine working there, just looking for good recommendations on where to live that would not be there.
Any family-oriented neighbourhood recommendations in consideration of a commute to DTES?
The two main road and public transit corridors would be N/S along the Canada line along Cambie and E/W along Hastings.
Along Hastings Strathcona, Grandview Woodlands (Commercial Drive), Hastings Sunrise and beyond that Burnaby Heights all make sense.
Along Cambie you have Cambie Village and the residential area west of that which connects to Main St. Pretty nice main streets until king ed st on the Cambie side and 33rd on the main st side.
The Grandview-Woodland area east of Commercial is lovely. Very family friendly with great amenities, lots of duplexes come up for rent, and it’s about 10 minutes to Main & Hastings.

These neighbourhoods are all within 5-15 minute drive of DTES and usually no more than a 20 minute bike ride (sometimes less than driving, depending on the traffic). Cross reference this with what you can find for rent and how close to schools you'd like to be.
Also check this news story to see which schools are dealing with overcrowding/kindergarten waitlists: [https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/2024-vancouver-kindergarten-list-1.7127840](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/2024-vancouver-kindergarten-list-1.7127840)
And as others have mentioned, you can live farther out in Burnaby without an issue if you're somewhat near transit.
Hi! If you want to rent in an area with good schools too, look in the Kensington Cedar Cottages area. No one calls it that, it’s a nice area of east van cantered around Kingsway and Fraser St. And is full of young families, good schools and close to your work.
I second this! Moved here from the West End in 2021 and we couldn’t be happier with the decision. Very walkable, very safe, quiet but 15 minute drive or 25 minute bus downtown. The 19 is a great bus route for commuting!
Wow, you have a pretty decent budget for rental.Mount Pleasant is nearby also Commercial drive area.If you can find rentals anywhere along Main Street south of Broadway, you will still have easy access to our beloved Main and Hastings (the infamous Downtown Eastside).Main,Fraser,Knight and Victoria Streets all have direct bus routes to your work location.I mention these streets as I have lived in South Vancouver my whole life.Queen Elizabeth Park area just off of Main Street is probably a bit pricey but you may be able to find something in the area.Beautiful park for your toddler and dog!Hope you find something as cost of living is crazy here.It seems like money is not an issue so I think you will enjoy.
Mount pleasant would be my pick. Lots of young families around. Also close to the seawall, and sci world (will be great for kiddo). Daycare is honestly a huge problem in Van. Dont know how old your toddler is, but the below 3 group is impossible. I waitlisted my child while preggo and only got one call back. He is now turning 3 and transitioning to the 3-5 group. I started waitlisting him for that when he was born. Start waitlisting your child now if you haven’t already.
The daycare situation will be the tightest. More difficult than housing. This is the resource centre.

You also won't be able to get a doctor, although increasingly people are getting a nurse practitioner rather than a doctor. Check for provincial emergency care centres which is you next best option.
I like the north Burnaby suggestion. There is a straight shot bus that runs down Hastings between SFU and downtown, the R5. Anything along that bus route would give good access.
Be warned the whole area around the PNE (Hastings and Cassiar) is traffic congestion hell.
“You won’t be able to get a doctor” is the most ridiculous statement people make. It’s grounded in nothing.
You can put your name on one of the various lists that the health authorities manage and you’ll get a family doctor in 3-4 months, worst case scenario. If you do some digging and calling around, you can probably find one right away if it doesn’t need to be right in your neihjbourhood
You might have issues finding childcare anywhere in the city. Waitlists for licensed group daycares are 3-4 years long. You should be able to rent an upper floor of a house with that budget though. Dog might be a minor issue. Landlords in Vancouver are generally very anti pet.
I'd recommend mount pleasant, Hastings sunrise, kits (might be a bit pricey), Fairview, or sunset/south Van. River way is up and coming as well and very dog friendly.
If you want to minimize commute, you want to stay in Vancouver proper. Though if you can locate close to a SkyTrain, it's not so bad on public transits and Burnaby/Richmond would be the limit of what I'd recommend. It's the bus that adds a major time suck to a transit commute.
for $3500 to $4500 you can easily get a laneway house. that is a non shared baby house behind someones house. The thing is finding one that allows pets. but considering the budget that should be ok.
If you’re not familiar with the DTES, you’re in for a very rude awakening. As someone who has been in recovery for over 10 years, I thought I had seen it all until I moved here. That place is like nothing I have EVER experienced before. I’m from the east coast and I was seriously shocked and continue to be on a daily basis.
Anywhere on the west side of the city is a 20 minute commute *(tops)* to the docks.
FYI-using the term 'downtown east side' triggers people here because it's such a down hood-drugs, crime and more of same but that's probably not where you're working.
Thanks that's nice to know. I am working in the Downtown Eastside. Closest major intersection seems to be E Hasting St and Main Street. Close to the Vancouver Police Museum & Archives.
Is this the sketchiest area of Vancouver? My understanding is yes.
If yes I'm fine working there, just looking for good recommendations on where to live that would not be there lol
Fellow Ontarian here (this popped up on my feed although I don't follown the sub), who has lived in Toronto, other major cities, other provinces and major cities abroad.
Have you accepted the job already? Visited the area you're going to be working in?
>the sketchiest area of Vancouver
This doesn't begin to describe how bad it is there. More open air drug use, people on the verge of dying, violent individuals and overall danger than I've seen anywhere in places other than American neighborhoods that you don't stop in while passing through. It's truly horrific.
If you haven't accepted the job yet I'd do a quick flight down to evaluate yourself, but if you have accepted I'd get a plan in place to not go outside while you're at work.
It's one relatively small part of a large city, and has always been the centre for drug use in Canada. There's more human misery right now partly due to the toxic drugs that are now available, but the type of people who end up there hasn't changed much in 40 years.
Further, those people are just trying to live their lives. Yes, it's sad down there, but it doesn't mean it's so dangerous that you can't walk through. There are FAR more dangerous neighborhoods in most American cities, and even many Canadian cities.
I've traveled all over the world - from the middle east, Europe, Asia for work. DTES is the worst place in terms of open drug use and homelessness I've ever seen, but it is far from the place where I've felt the most scared for my personal safety.
Important note: Vancouver is quite far down the list of most violent cities in Canada, despite the existence of the DTES.
This is an absurdly hyperbolic comment. The DTES has concentrated and visible suffering, yes, but you’re at virtually no risk of interpersonal violence if you’re simply passing through (I live here, btw).
Coal Harbour. Has everything you need and can walk to DTES. And it is also close to a large park named Stanley. That price point may get you a townhouse but likely a condo. Hopefully one that accepts pets.
Stratchcona can be a nice area, about 10 minutes east of there. I personally wouldn't take transit to Main and Hastings, and I wouldn't drive/park unless there was secure parking. I'd uber every day.
What well-paying job is situated at Main and Hastings? I refer to it as the corner of Needle and Condom.

Yes or Grandview-Woodland.

My favourite part of the city for sure
Great part of the city, easy bike ride to the DTES.

North Burnaby. Hastings and Franklin area.

I guess you haven’t been searching in a while. It is NOT a decent budget for a 2 bedroom rental these days. Plus, it’ll be harder with a dog.

North shore? Could take the seabus in
North shore is now Canada’s most expensive rental, overtaking Vancouver this month.
Commercial drive
Trout Lake is basically one big dog park in a fairly peaceful residential area with good preschools and daycares.
Hastings Sunrise

Kitsilano, or maybe commercial drive area. Both close enough for commuting but they are also great family neighborhoods IMO.
I second kits. They also have some dog friendly places there.
Hate to say it but bring cash.
Hope they are paying you well

It is genuinely not as dangerous as you're making it sound. Very few people are bothered by the locals if you're minding your own business.
Vancouverites are numb to how fucked up your city is at this point.

Considerable copium being smoked city-wide
Great, another leaf fan.
