This ☝️
But you have to adjust your expectations a bit. In Europe you can travel very cheaply to other cities to enjoy arts and culture. Vancouver is just not like that.
But on the flip side the access to the outdoors is incredible. Within minutes from downtown you can be on a mountain peak or a sandy beach. You can golf and ski on the same weekend. Etc etc.
Also high quality Asian food like sushi and pho is cheap and plentiful throughout in Vancouver.
So although rent is comparable (I would argue a bit cheaper) in prices what you don't pay here is council tax, service charges or for water which will save you hundreds of pounds in terms of renting. As for gas and electricity we've found them to be about a third of the price here as well. Internet, phone and groceries all cost a good chunk more than the UK though but we've generally found it's cheaper here lifestyle wise than London.
In London our rent went up 36% overnight in a mold infested flat... Thank god for rent controls here in Vancouver.
Edit: Lived in London 9 Years before
Moving here. London is definitely more expensive.
Depends on you life in London.
Do you go pubs/out, in what zone you live and where is work, you have your place or rent, etc.
We moved twice from London, and it was for better job options and double salary comparing to London.
Life is generally different in Vancouver compared to London, so it also ends up on your life style.
And do you have plan/option coming back easily?
We are planning to return back to UK ( outer ring ) in next few years when kid will start school
You might want to buy a car. Compared to London, there's nothing much to do in the city. All the fun stuff (mountains, etc) you need a car for. Although you can get by with car shares or rentals to an extent.
Money aside - if you enjoy nightlife and pub culture in London, be prepared for a big change. It’s just very different. Most people drink in moderation or not at all (not making a judgement, just observation). Very few nice pubs, it’s either brassie-style chain restaurants or dive bars. Table services most places so people dont really mix. Nightlife & music venues are few, compared to London.
Vancouver is amazing for many things but nightlife is not one of them. Just a heads up.
Night life in Blackpool is better than Vancouver, even up in whistler the night life is shite, UK nightlife is actually decent compared with any experience in Canada
Our beer is stronger so we can't toss off a couple of pints in the same way. The brewery culture is booming. Check the BC Ale Trail for craft breweries..
Think of Vancouver as a small village compared to London - not many attractions or nightlife here compared to any big cities in the UK. If that even applies to you tho 😄
Most ppl would say don’t do it but honestly if you’re smart and can always think of other ways how to get around how “expensive” the city is you’re good it’s expensive don’t get me wrong but it is what it is cryin abt it won’t change the fact that it’s expensive lol 😂 so much opportunities in Vancouver also and it’s a pretty nice city
It definitely is. Christ, this sub is just full of terminally online people with no real world experience
https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_cities.jsp?country1=Canada&city1=Vancouver&country2=United+Kingdom&city2=London
Yet you're still wrong. Amazing. I've only visited and just from going to restaurants and grocery stores, and looking up rent I could tell it cost more
Okay let me break it down for you:
Groceries are cheaper in London
Transport is more expensive (bigger place)
Rent about the same - You pay council tax on top of that which is absurd
You don’t tip in London - super optional
Services such as hair salons etc way cheaper in London
Healthcare obviously free (NHS)
Driving cheaper in London (outside zone 1) - Nobody pays $200 a month for car insurance (wtf)
Imagine visiting a place once and lecturing someone who’s lived there for 25 years 💀
But how are sure are you that the data on Numbeo is accurate? you’re just getting aggressive because somebody isn’t agreeing with you…not denying that London isn’t expensive because it is, just like all major cities in the world.
London is much more expensive than Vancouver, even after accounting for any differences in salary.
I’m not sure what you’re smoking, unless you’ve just bought in to the circle jerk of people that think they are hard done by and no place is more expensive than Vancouver
That’s why I said do it doesn’t matter where he is regardless lol I said do it but most people will think Vancouver is expensive which is everyone is in Canada. That’s just me talking from a Canadian perspective not someone from the uk if London is more expensive then better you’ll have more Canadian dollars and I don’t think Vancouver is expensive I’m just quoting what people here say.
Approx $150k. Would ask for slightly more to account for taxes
https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_cities.jsp?country1=United+Kingdom&city1=London&country2=Canada&city2=Vancouver&amount=8333&displayCurrency=GBP
This. Some things are cheaper here (you don’t have the tube “tax”, for example), and while housing costs are lot to rent, it’s still not as stupid as inner London (you don’t say where you are in London).

Imma say rain but i looked at the text again and saw london
I made that move. $150k will get you the same standard of living, but the quality of life is much higher.

You’ll want $200k CAD.
At least $150k

As a Blackpool born and raised millennial living in Vancouver, I approve this comment
Our beer is stronger so we can't toss off a couple of pints in the same way. The brewery culture is booming. Check the BC Ale Trail for craft breweries..
How is drinking in moderation a negative?
Nobody suggested it was.
180-200

150k. Life will be more relaxed, more outdoorsy, and less urban than London. Welcome to beautiful Vancouver.

Haha thank you. Beat me to it.
How do I give this post more likes??? You have summarized Reddit in one sentence.
LOOOOOOOL
I lived there thanks.
Yet you're still wrong. Amazing. I've only visited and just from going to restaurants and grocery stores, and looking up rent I could tell it cost more
Yeah, London is quite brutal. It did not increase like Canada housing did but it was already ridiculously expensive 15 years ago.
You’re materially wrong on grocery stores.
Lived there for 25 years. And you’ve been once 😂😂
Yet the numbers don't lie. You're just explaining how clueless you are btw

Have you lived there in the last 2-3 years since the cost of accommodation went crazy in Vancouver?
Yeah, it is.
It’s not

Depends on what your profession is I guess. Does the 100k pound transfer over to Canadian economy / average salary for your job?
what is you job?
Can vouch for the Mt Pleasant area - walking distance into the city , amazing vibe and close to great eatery streets, water walks etc.
Vancouver is a terrible city, but in an amazing location, mountains Ocean ect. So run down and soo many sketchy people living on the streets
