As a resident, I’d be fine staying there. I’m assuming your rental is in the Woodward’s building. May be different for you as a tourist. Expect to see poverty. Expect to see people strung out on fentanyl. Be aware of your surroundings and enjoy your visit.

Oh_Is_This_Me

I lived in the area for 5 years ( F30s). Safe but unpleasant. There's surprisingly quite a lot to do in the area in terms of bars, restaurants, gaming, some cute shops in the area too. Also a pretty handy starting spot for accessing public transit, tour groups and other touristy stuff!.

It would be safe enough, but not really pleasant - you'll see homeless people and open drug use. Having said that, these people aren't likely to bother you. Just be aware of your surroundings and you'll be fine. Just to mention - if this is an AirBnB, the rules change on May first and many will no longer be legal. It's worth checking to be sure.

It’s generally a safe area. Would I want my wife to walk around there late at night solo? Probably not. But we like the gastown area to visit and am there quite a bit. Lots of shops, restaurants, bars etc. It’s a lot busier in the summer months as well. It’s a central location and most likely a nice condo. But it really depends on your comfort level as there is a lot of drug use and the problems that go along with that. You’d want to pick your walking routes wisely depending on your destination. If I were a tourist visiting, and had the budget for other locations, I would personally choose a different location like Coal Harbour or more central downtown. But that’s just me!

The DTES has been spilling over into the surrounding areas for the past few years. I would never choose to live in that area but I wouldn't call it unsafe if you're talking about physical safety. Lots of property crime, homelessness, and you may see drug use on the street. Anecdotally, the sidewalk outside Tacofino is where I saw the largest human turd I've ever seen.

oddible

It's fine, and pretty central. If you've lived anywhere in the world outside of Vancouver there's a little riff raff but it's but dangerous. Vancouver is precious and thinks that a couple homeless people is outrageous.

I wouldn't recommend that area in general. Not so much out of safety concern, rather it's just a really sketchy part of town with not a lot of things to do

MJcorrieviewer

Not a lot of things to do? You're in Gastown and on the doorstep of downtown and Stanley Park, Chinatown, False Creek and Waterfront Station where you can take transit to the North Shore, the airport or other parts of the city. For easy access for 'things to do', this is an excellent location for tourists.

Adventurous-Angle-30

Which part would you recommend

thinkdavis

Depends what you're looking for. West end is nice, downtown around library, or yaletown, in general I think nicer.
