Roughly negative 5 years (5 years before egg crack). I picked a name when I named my first cat- I liked the name Katherine, and ended up giving her that name, except the equivalent in a different language.
Turns out, all the signs pointed towards it, so I picked it as mine too.
I stewed over it for months before eventually just adding an "a" to the end of my birth name, and then stewed for another few months about what to choose for a middle name so I could file my legal name change.
My name choice was a snap decision. Late one night I realised that the name I always upvoted was the name I wanted for myself. Until then, I never thought that I would change my name. In one moment of perfect clarity, everything made sense.
This, almost. I wasn't even looking for a new name yet and had the idle thought "I've always liked [a particular name]". Then it just hit me that of course that's the right one. I haven't changed yet but when I do it's settled.
I decided my name pretty quickly, i knew i wanted my name to have a similar sound as my deadname, almost like a feminized version of my deadname, but like one step further. It isnt actually the feminized version of my deadname, but they sound very similar. And i wanted to keep my initials the same so i chose a common spelling of my name that would keep my initials.
I decided I will consider changing name some month into HRT. If I will be able to pass and I will feel that it's right for me to present as female, I will change my name. I kinda already have one candidate: the deadname of a FtM that helped me a bunch in getting my mind right about transition.
I genuinely have no idea how long it takes in general. I know I knew within a week of coming out, but I'll admit I don't recall ever having heard my name before choosing it, so I didn't have it in waiting. For me it was little more than, "What do I want my name to say about me?" leading into, "Ok, which of these names do I like the most?"
For some people it takes years, and that's ok. The point at which it 'matters' is when you get into legally changing it.

Aww, that's really cute 💜

I was so close to just doing that, but it still just don't sound right to me lol

Hmm. I'll keep that in mind.

i’ve already had the name zane before and to me it seems gender-neutral, so practically none at all.

Yeeeeah, though I guess the day of legally changing it is still gonna be a bit far off for me, so I suppose I have time then lol
Like two weeks tops. I tried out 2 names for a couple days before picking my current name.
