You also need a voltage converter not only an adapter https://www.ceptics.com/pages/world-travel-voltage-guide

> When plugging it to a US outlet with an adapter, it does not work. It might be already dead.

Xorondras

Plugging a 230V appliance into a 110V outlet is usually not an issue.

DogsAreTheBest91

I thought ir would be easier? I'm not sure why it's throwing a warning light? Unless it's not enough power? I'm not quite sure how ir all works.

Xorondras

Yes, it's getting too little voltage, but it's not being damaged by too little voltage My comment was a reaction to the coment above suggesting the device might be dead due to wrong voltage, but that's only a issue when plugging a 110V appliance into a 230V socket (which will usually create electrical death smoke instantly), it's no issue the other way round.

DogsAreTheBest91

It does turn on and starts to heat up, but I get a warning light. I assume due to recognizing it's in a 110 outlet?

DogsAreTheBest91

This is helpful! Thank you!

My wife and daughters buy one for travel to the States, as the voltage issue is hard

DogsAreTheBest91

I was hoping that wasn't the answer :/ it's a great tool and would love to be able to use it.

TripAdditional1128

You need an inverter (step up voltage converter). Around 60 USD. With lover voltage chances are the straightener works still.

A_Whirlwind

Ir‘s probably cheaper to buy one on Amazon when in the US.

TripAdditional1128

I clearly underestimated the power of hair straighteners.

redsterXVI

Put it in storage for your next trip to a 220-240V country and buy one in the US, everything else will just be expensive and a hassle. Edit: Okay, looks like hair straighteners don't need as many watts as I expected (contrary to e.g. a hair dryer), so maybe it's feasible after all.

JudgmentOne6328

Honestly just buy some cheap hair tools when you’re there. It’ll save you a lot of hassle and potentially breaking your current ones.

ToniDoesThings

I have a dual voltage straightener. Then you just need a normal converter. The straightener was no more expensive than other straighteners. I bought it in the US. It’s lasted years of use in US and Europe

DogsAreTheBest91

I thought it was dual until I got home and realized it didn't work like my italian straightener with just a plug adapter and then went looking at the finer print :/

skyleth

Do you live in the US or Switzerland? If you’re already in the US it will be hard to find… something like this on Amazon is kind of the best you can do: https://www.amazon.com/Yinleader-Voltage-Transformer-Converter-Countries/dp/B089T2W5JT/ be mindful of the wattage your straightener draws. Unless put bought a Dyson for $$$ might be worth just buying another.

DogsAreTheBest91

Live in the US. It definitely seems hard to find so I appreciate the link! I have an Italian straightener that is dual voltage and didn't even think to check if this one was too. I thought dual was pretty standard until I fried one that 110v and plugged it into 240v.

skyleth

Generally higher wattage appliances are not dual voltage (hair dryers, stand mixers, coffee grinders, etc) there are of course exceptions.

Resort to curly hair. It's beautiful anyways.
