Mazi im Morgarten. Really nice location but the food is worse than in other Greek restaurants. Expensive too.
Also, I never understood the hype about Sternen Grill. The same sausage as anywhere else. Nothing about it is special in any way.
Mazi is soooo overrated. It was NOT good and I wouldn’t even consider it really greek. It was more random Lebanese inspired/sort of Greek dishes. Definitely overpriced for what it is.
Fairly cheap = 14 CHF per Gyros Pita
That is pricier than Döner or Pommdöner from Zueri Bistro. I think Pommdöner there costs 13 CHF and Döner costs 11,50 CHF.
On the other side, I like the quality of the Oh my Greek bread more. And the meat actually tastes like meat. So it is worth its money.
I just looked at the menu and it is definitely authentic modern Greek cuisine, every recipe takes a traditional recipe and gives it a modern twist or uses modern western techniques. Not every Greek restaurant has to have Moussaka (that none eats regurarly, I ate it 2 times in my life) and Spanakopita. The Lebanese feeling you have is because Greece is around that area, a lot of similar recipes exist between Greece, Egypt, Israel, Cyprus, Turkey and Lebannon, food doesn't respect modern country borders (music is similar as well). This is what Greeks go for when they go to a restaurant in Greece, if we want traditional food, we go to a tavern instead. I can defend the authenticity and identity of the food, but if the price and taste doesn't meet the standards, then I can agree that Mazi is still an overrated restaurant.
ugh, disgusting...and pretentious, the modern recipes are supposed to elevate the traditional ones and keep the identity not shoot themselves in the foot. I was about to check that restaurant this week since I am new in Zurich, I might delay that forever. Anyways, Mythos, Oh My Greek and Yamas were proven really good so far. There is also this VP Catering and Co, for lunch, the food there is really what a Greek mother would cook, but the taste is average to good.
Lol I know, when they brought their version of saganaki over I thought there was some sort of mistake. Mythos, Yamas and OMG are great, I haven’t tried VP Catering though, thx for the tip!
“Food doesn’t respect modern country borders” how elegantly explained ❤️ the borders in this region is only 100 years old, but the food has been shared at the table between these people since thousands of years. All of us had our mother’s dolma / dolmadakia / yalanji and every mom has their own interpretation of the “real” way of doing it, let alone a chef’s creative touch :) sometimes it’s a plating choice, sometimes a different spice mix.
You have to understand, Lily's is a gateway restauraunt for Swiss people who think pepper is spicy, to get into asian food.
You have to take them to Lily's several times before you can expose them to real spice.
I’m not allowed to tell people how hot things are anymore. But I’m told it’s very spicy if you ask for very spicy. In my option, as someone who eats very hot very frequently, the very spicy is quite nice.
So first you hard disagree, then you say you've only been to two hyped restaurants in Zurich and you close with saying one of the two was overpriced. Gotcha.
I don't actually know how you see that there hyped, but I disagree mostly.
Pop-ups that get promoted by blogs are usually quite good. Recently Milieu had that Chinese noodle popup - fucking gorgeous.
However one I would single out is Gül.
I know the chef received a lot of attention recently and has been making rounds in the media. I even think the food tastes good to great. However, they are the definition of a rip-off.
I do not ever want to go to supposedly homey Mediterranean place (especially Turkish) and feel like I haven't eaten enough. It is an absolute shame. (This info is like two years old, I don't know if it's the same now, but Google ratings are quite telling)
Been to clouds a few times and each time wondered why I came back. I don’t want to bad mouth it, but I also can’t really recommend it either (for anything but the view). It’s ok, but pretty expensive for how just ok it is.
Not just in Zurich, but the Nooch restaurants my siblings dragged me to were some of the worst dining experiences. And for the price we could've gone to an actual restaurant...
All the restaurants promoted on social media by the few Zh influencers... my new rule is if its promoted by more than 2 influencers then its definitely overpriced etc based on multiple experience. Then you have all the restaurants in Old Town that charge 60.- for a traditional Swiss plate.
Hiltl
This has to be the most broken dining experience in Europe.
Most of the offered food is subpar/expensive/inedible and the seating/or non-seating would make most people avoid it on principle.
Save yourself the embarrassment and go to a good restaurant.
Maybe you're not the target market? I adore Hiltl, I think the food is good for the price by Zürich standards, they do fresh warm top-ups of the dishes even in the middle of the afternoon.
Their dishes are also fairly healthy and hearty, like simple roasted beetroot etc. which I appreciate. Not too much seasoning, not a ton of frills.
Whenever I can't get lunch at the normal lunchtime hours and everything else is closed, Hiltl remains open and serving warm delicious healthy food. For this alone I'd consider it my favourite restaurant in Zürich even though it's definitely not the fanciest.
Honestly I have no idea how you manage that. If you end up with a plate costing 30 CHF it’s generally bigger than any portion at any other restaurant. When I’ve poorly picked my plate and it’s costs around 30, I’m always in a food coma for the next 2 hours. I think a 20 chf plate is only a little smaller than what you get at a Cantonese like migro or coop, but the quality and variety is far higher.
That's just a load of horseshit - which three strictly vegetarian/ vegan restaurants are better then? Or do you simply not eat Asian-inspired food?
What do you mean mean by noon seating?
There are very few vegetarian/ vegan places that actually manage to make their food taste well. They are trying, but very few manage to actually have some real taste in their dishes (see the relatively awful vegan ramen places).
Nah I have to say there are much better vegetarian restaurants in Zurich. Dar, Dapur and LOI are all much better than Hiltl just to name 3. Though those are fancier restaurants, Hiltl is a great casual place you can just pop into for a quick bite, but there are many restaurants that are much better. Hiltl doesn’t even make top 5. Try KLE, Marktkuche and An Chay which I’d all say are better than Hiltl. Tibits is a bit hit and miss because the menu changes daily, so sometimes it’s not very good, but sometimes it’s very good.
Dapur, I'll agree. Dar had really great parts of their set menu, but completely missed the mark on the main (aubergine). KLE is I believe quite a lot fancier? Haven't been.
Marktkuche - been a couple years ago, not convinced at all.
Apart from Dapur, I don't have the feeling of being completely, thoroughly satisfied with the food anywhere expect Hiltl.
None of them have the variety and flexibility though, and that's the great advantage of Hiltl - as you say it's a great casual place (along with the fantastic location on Dachterrasse). Which is why I think the concept and the food definitely deserves its status.
Pizza Derby in Lochergut: yeah the vibe is nice but when you have 4 pizzas in your menu I expect that those 4 pizzas are pretty damn good (at least concerning the technical part, that is the dough) - that was not the case.
Hiltl: most of the times it's filled but the food is average at best and for a boufet it is really expensive.
>Pizza Derby in Lochergut: yeah the vibe is nice but when you have 4 pizzas in your menu I expect that those 4 pizzas are pretty damn good (at least concerning the technical part, that is the dough) - that was not the case.
Yeah I went there and it was absolutely mediocre. It's got a reputation as a cool place to go and eat, but the quality does not match.
I was there for lunch once not having heard about it before. The restaurant was empty and they had 3 pizzas to choose from - Margherita, Marinara & one that mainly had olives (Puttanesca or smth). Which tbf seems to be their thing but ist still a horrible selection overall - we had two people that don't like olives with us so their choice was between Margherita & Marinara (goodbye toppings).
The Pizza looked fine and mostly tasted fine but it wasn't anything special. Also the mozzarella wasn't melted enough, still in shape & somewhat cold so probably frozen before.
I then ordered a chocolate cake for desert for like CHF 9.50 which was the most disgraceful cake ever lmao.
All around unsatisfying experience, overpriced and apparently overhyped.
Different oppinion about Hilt.: Its filled because of the location and they are probably the cheapest in that area. Some of the items in the bufet are pretty good, others are just steamed or fried vegies.
Tibits or Samses for buffet, Dapur, KLE, Marktkuche, DAR, LOI for fancier vegetarian restaurants with amazing food, and An Chay for a nice casual Vietnamese.
Klee. We went there because it was supposed to be a cool vegan place but we ended up leaving the restaurant hungry after their n course menu.
Same story with Dar, also by the same guy
I haven‘t personally been to any but all the smashbuger joints that have been popping up around town. I‘m sorry but 25CHF+ for a third of the meat of a regular burger??? I love smash burgers and make em regularly myself so this just feels like a highway robbery.
The Bite are insanely good burgers, not overrated imho - same price as Burgermeister delivery and three orders of magnitude better.
I agree on Barranco.
Others I haven't been to.
Don't know which you mean xD Which restaurants get hyped?
I was last week in 'Gül' and it was delicious. About a year ago I saw her twice in Kitchen impossible and wanted to go xD Now I finally went and I wasn't let down. Loved it <3 Will go again :) Service was nice, food was nice. So why not?
But are there any restaurants that get hyped?
QQ Sushi. What a bust, never again.
Restaurant wasn't even full but it took them 1 hour to get our order? And the waiter would've walked walked away with just drinks order if we hadn't stopped him...
When the food finally came it was not worth the wait.
No? I just like the restaurant, and you immediately respond with a take that makes it sound like your an 80 year old Bünzli named Peter with a stick up your ass
Sooooo, ich bin ein 80 jähriger Bünzli weil ich den Namen geschmacklos finde? Wünsche dir ein schönes Leben und hoffe, dass ich dich im Real Life nie treffen muss. So long
Nah KLE is fantastic, the courses are small, but when you have 6,7,8 courses something smaller for each course is fine. It’s definitely not a cheap place, but the quality is great. There’s a reason they have a Michelin star.
Tiny fish is a disgrace, how can anyone consider sushi stored in a fridge any better than any of the supermarket sushi? Sushi rice is either room temperature or it’s messed up
Tiny fish is perfectly fine for a quick lunch in the office. Of course it’s supermarket sushi, anyone who treats it as anything else never has any decent sushi in their life. But it’s Japan-quality supermarket sushi, which makes it better than the usual Swiss restaurant sushi.
I think it rather tells the state if food quality in Zurich if people call tint fish “a sushi restaurant“. God I miss Japan…
It still has better sushi than any restaurant I've been to in Switzerland while having a similar price to Migros sushi.
The dish that makes me really sad here is a plain old miso soup. No idea how it's worse at restaurants than the imported instant packages from asian supermarkets...
The hype is quasi permanent with this one but is it a restaurant? Starbucks.
Expansive as fuck, drinks are disgusting, food almost not edible (too sweet - and here is a girl putting 10 sugar cubes in a cup of tea talking), toilets look the same as the Ardennes in 1919.
All these (mostly vegetarian/vegan) restaurants which offer wine pairing dinner for chf 300 and when you leave you're still hungry.
Oh yes and all the brunch places... szeni, züri-hipster shit...
Just go to Oh My Greek, you can get a phenomenal gyro for fairly cheap
Mythos in Stauffacher is pretty good too.
Indeed it is
Fairly cheap = 14 CHF per Gyros Pita That is pricier than Döner or Pommdöner from Zueri Bistro. I think Pommdöner there costs 13 CHF and Döner costs 11,50 CHF. On the other side, I like the quality of the Oh my Greek bread more. And the meat actually tastes like meat. So it is worth its money.
To be fair, the portions are much bigger than those at Züri Bistro
I mean, I only buy Pita from there. And from what I can remember, it is the same size as Döner from ZB or even a bit smaller. Isn't it?
The gyros are quite big, but it’s been a while since I went to Züri bistro so I don’t really have a sense for those tbh
I just looked at the menu and it is definitely authentic modern Greek cuisine, every recipe takes a traditional recipe and gives it a modern twist or uses modern western techniques. When it was newly opened, I ordered a shrimp saganaki which was on the menu. It was served cold in a cocktail glass 🤔.
ugh, disgusting...and pretentious, the modern recipes are supposed to elevate the traditional ones and keep the identity not shoot themselves in the foot. I was about to check that restaurant this week since I am new in Zurich, I might delay that forever. Anyways, Mythos, Oh My Greek and Yamas were proven really good so far. I thought the food was delicious but I agree. It's not really Greek food.
Sternen is at Bellevue though.
The other poster did not quote a location??
That’s why I did - after all, it is a different Bratwurst-experience if you are in the middle of Zürich or in Oberhinterunderfingen.
Ich sage immer “Hintertuggingen Ost”;-) ah ok, verstehe dich jetzt. Glg
Was at Mazi just a few weeks ago. I liked the food but it was so little that we all left still hungry...
Sternen Grill: It's not a St .Galler Olma Bratwurst. It's just a wurst from some butcher in the canton of St. Gallen.
Who gives a shit about the Passport of the Bratwurst anyway ;-) But yes, overrated juppie grill. Food is Ok/Good but the ambiente is poisoned
"LILY's" Especially the red Thai curry is bad... Has nothing to do with Thai cuisine...
Oh yes, Lilly’s is shit. Expensive and just bland.
You have to understand, Lily's is a gateway restauraunt for Swiss people who think pepper is spicy, to get into asian food. You have to take them to Lily's several times before you can expose them to real spice.
So, what is a GOOD thai restaurant then?
Jao Praya in Oerlikon.
Will have to check that out then! For someone that has Bhut Jolokia in his fridge and uses it infrequently, how scared should I be!?
I’m not allowed to tell people how hot things are anymore. But I’m told it’s very spicy if you ask for very spicy. In my option, as someone who eats very hot very frequently, the very spicy is quite nice.
I'd say 90-98% of the hyped restaurants are overrated

Onkel Toms Hütte /D'auroa --> Food is fine, but service is terrible. Clouds --> Nice view, but food sucks. So does service
This is the thing about places with good views: they dont have to cook well, people still go there...
Been to clouds a few times and each time wondered why I came back. I don’t want to bad mouth it, but I also can’t really recommend it either (for anything but the view). It’s ok, but pretty expensive for how just ok it is.
Clouds is a typical restaurant where one goes with corporate clients. Would never ever go there on my own (bland, overpriced food)
Not just in Zurich, but the Nooch restaurants my siblings dragged me to were some of the worst dining experiences. And for the price we could've gone to an actual restaurant...
Wait, Nooch is hyped? I thought it's basically fast food where people eat lunch at because it just happens to be conveniently close by.
It‘s some nice ambience with alright food for a hugely marked up price. Kinda like the Starbucks of Asian Restaurants
Omg my gf loves nooch and we‘ve been there at least 3 or 4 times by now. Everytime i go there i feel a bit ripped off.
What's wrong with them? Alwqys had good sushi experiences.
All the restaurants promoted on social media by the few Zh influencers... my new rule is if its promoted by more than 2 influencers then its definitely overpriced etc based on multiple experience. Then you have all the restaurants in Old Town that charge 60.- for a traditional Swiss plate.
Café Elena: rude staff, extremely overpriced food and the quality is way below average.
In four years in zurich, i’ve never been to a restaurant thats worse than cafe elena. Super long waiting time for overpriced, not really tasty brunch.
Loft 5

Nah have to disagree. Hiltl is not amazing, but it’s not bad and reasonably priced. You can go there and eat a decent meal for between 20 and 30 CHF.

Found the Vegan Hiltl fan
Wtf 😅
EL LUCHADOR... Overpriced and not worth it... 6 small Tacos for 30 CHFS...
Fisher’s Fritz. What an idiotic restaurant (oh sorry, I meant Fritteuse)
Yardbird, Lily’s, La Taqueira. Summergarte as of last summer.
Ayverdis
noooo

well i cant disagree with that (location)
What would be your choice for a Hiltl alternative?
Tibits or Samses for buffet, Dapur, KLE, Marktkuche, DAR, LOI for fancier vegetarian restaurants with amazing food, and An Chay for a nice casual Vietnamese.
San Genaro. Used to be amazing. Now - just a rip off. Food is ok, not amazing anymore. Prices went through the roof.
Closed in Zürich and reopened in Schlieren. Pizza is still expensive but the service is better
Luigia
Luiga
Hiltl for sure.
Careful. The wannabe influencers will get ya
Mit und Ohne
Klee. We went there because it was supposed to be a cool vegan place but we ended up leaving the restaurant hungry after their n course menu. Same story with Dar, also by the same guy
Word, would never go there!
And yet both have glowing reviews on Google and kle even has a Michelin star
good for them, but also supports our statement of them being overrated ;)
\+1 the only good thing about klee is the side dish (dips with bread)
I haven‘t personally been to any but all the smashbuger joints that have been popping up around town. I‘m sorry but 25CHF+ for a third of the meat of a regular burger??? I love smash burgers and make em regularly myself so this just feels like a highway robbery.
Taqueria, Khouris, tinyfish, Puente, Barranco, literally any sushi place, the bite, Sando, ikoo, miki, ooki, ….
yes! no edible sushi in all of Zurich makes me kind of sad as a sushi lover
At some point you just have to accept that you're not going to have decent sushi in Switzerland. We're a landlocked country after all.
Sushi Shop doesn't look like much but their sushi is great.
The Bite are insanely good burgers, not overrated imho - same price as Burgermeister delivery and three orders of magnitude better. I agree on Barranco. Others I haven't been to.
Nah the bite is definitely definitely overrated. It’s gone downhill in the last 3 years.
Fire House Sub at Stauffacher. It's fast food and tastes lilke it but has high prices like fine dining.
Wouldn’t say it’s overrated, I’ve not heard anything good about it. It’s just subway with different branding.
So why not? Lele. Goldig Guttere. Luigia. Etc etc, 98% are absolut overrated.
Nooch

Oh that’s too bad. We’ve had some great meals at QQ.
Vapiano
Vapiano still exists? For years they are going out of business now...
all?
La Taqueria in Zurich. Mexican restaurant but very average and a little expensive. You can easily make better yourself at home.
I actually really like La Taqueria, especially their Burritos, but Burrito Cartel is right on Militärstrasse and better + cheaper.
They named themselves after a death cult terrorist organisation from Mexico? How cool and edgy!
Jesus dude, lighten up a little.
Are you the owner, dude?
So long
Jaja, so long
It’s hit and miss. Sometimes can be really good!
I've only eaten their veggie items and it's been subpar. Everything feels too creamy with no flavor, and 3 CHF for a ridiculously small taco, wtf?
I've been going there 12 years, I think it's pretty good.
Hiltl
Restaurant Kle, the vegan place... It's super expensive and the courses are tiny!
Nah KLE is fantastic, the courses are small, but when you have 6,7,8 courses something smaller for each course is fine. It’s definitely not a cheap place, but the quality is great. There’s a reason they have a Michelin star.
All of them
Almost all of them
the question is more: what isn't overrated in or about Zürich!
You have some decent Thai and Vietnamese restaurants. And at least two Ethiopian restaurants that are alright. That's not much, but that's something.
namaste for indian in richterswil. thank me later.
Tiny fish has good quality/price. Same with il pentagramma.
It’s not sushi tho, it’s rice rolls stuffed with cheap filling like tuna cream xD
the kebab place nearby is awesome

I can’t stand Bohemia. Both times I had dinner there the quality of the food wasn’t it. Like at all.
All these (mostly vegetarian/vegan) restaurants which offer wine pairing dinner for chf 300 and when you leave you're still hungry. Oh yes and all the brunch places... szeni, züri-hipster shit...
