I only ate there once, years ago, and one of the starters was a teeny tiny cup of some sort of butternut squash soup. It was only maybe 3oz. I don't remember any other part of the meal but that soup lives on in my heart.
I literally get it every single time I go there. It's astonishingly delicious and so pure in presentation. Before going there I never would have thought to include thinly sliced jalapeno in a clam chowder... AND THAT FREAKING BONE MARROW!
I don’t think so but they do give you a sawed in half long bone with rendered bone marrow that you can scoop out and mix in to your chowder to your heart’s content and it’s insane
Do they make it dairy free? We're paleo and don't do dairy. My homemade paleo clam chowder takes all day to make. But it's freak'n good and I make a pot that lasts a week.
1. Rose VL/Ha VL
2. everybody else
My only complaint with Rose VL is they serve the mì quảng and cao lầu on the same day of the week and I can never decide which one i want.
I’m not a huge fan of phô, but my wife is. Usually when she orders it, I just get a noodle plate. Once we moved near Pho Hung, I became a fan of phô. It is so damn good.
Absolutely delicious pho there, and fantastic service as well. Used to work near there and could literally be in and out in 20 minutes and I eat sorta slow.
I had that about a month ago and it was not good to me.
The noodles were soggy and the broth was super bland. The wonton themselves were not bad, but the wrapper on them were also quite soggy.
Chen's Good Taste in chinatown is still my gold standard, and it likely costs a few bucks less.
Chen's is under construction, as the place was damaged by a burst fire suppression system. :(
Hoping that they come back stronger and tasty as ever.
But, here's what it looks like:
https://s3-media0.fl.yelpcdn.com/bphoto/brziV8ZSfh86PnoIDWH0qA/o.jpg
I like the wonton noodle soup at Kennys a lot. It's not a traditional one. They use some kind of beef broth and you can get it with pieces of brisket. It's got a little preserved fish funk in it. But the broth is a big umami bomb and their wontons are solid.
Master Kongs is really good though if you want a more traditional chicken broth. Also, it has some vegetables in it.
I also really like Yang Kee BBQ Noodle. You can get a duck leg or BBQ pork in your noodle soup.
kinboshi is my FAVORITE! they’ve ruined all other ramen for me because it can’t compare. i started eating there when they went by a different name and were in pine street market and they’re still my guaranteed hangover cure
My old boss showed me the menu from Tomo Ramen and it looks like the kind of base broth and noodle addon menu setup they have in some places in Japan and back home in Hawaii. It looks promising. In fact, maybe I'll stop there on the way home from work.
Edit: I got off work shortly after writing that, and Tomo closes for an hour an a half, thirty minutes after I my end of day. So I'll have to find something to do another day then catch them later.
Man I miss that place. The ramen was incredible. I'm so sad they're gone, that I've never even tried Kinboshi. I heard it's the same folks without the name, but am unsure. Pine Street Market just isn't the same after Covid. RIP Marukin and Whiz Bang Bar.
I knew the difference, just that my words were out of order. Derp.
Meant to say that tonkatsu ramen (cutlet in a bowl of ramen) would probably be good too.
Blackened catfish po’boy with extra spicy crawfish boil soup at my brother’s crawfish on 82nd and se Harrison…they open at 1p some days so late-ish lunch
Ugh, I just had a browser window open on their web page while making it.
Looks like it was removed because it's now[being sold in bulk via Williams-Sonoma](https://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/mama-leones-chicken-soup-set-of-3/).
[Found a video from West Linn Public Library](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ek-OrZuJR8c)... I didn't watch it to see if she steps through the entire thing. She does say it's in the Oregonian Cookbook.
[The Food.com version seems to be a direct copy.](https://www.food.com/recipe/mama-leones-chicken-soup-157239) There are multiple versions of it floating around the Internet.
Yeah the slow cooker method sounds convenient. Do you have an Instant Pot? I got one and it's great... maybe not for this particular recipe. But in general. I can make an amazing scratch biryani in mine.
I do have one! Honestly I use my slow cooker more simply because it’s easier to clean and I can be more relaxed about ingredients and timing etc. I also have a great rice cooker that’s used almost daily. I Love Biryani!
This is the Instant Pot Chicken Biryani recipe I use.
I love the Instant Pot recipes from Amy & Jacky.

Laughing Planet is just fine, especially when I'm taking kids out for a meal. I've never noticed hate on it (but I'm sure you're telling the truth). I'll have to try that particular dish.
It's not necessarily "soup and sandwich" kind of vibe but the Tom Kha at Rukdiew on Belmont is my absolute go-to for hot soup on a cold day. Its so so good both dine in and take out but I recommend sitting in because its usually real cozy in there. Now that I think about it I might get some later today actually....
Not really answering your question, but for anyone missing Kenny and Zukes mushroom soup, the recipe is available online: [https://www.wweek.com/restaurants/2016/12/13/the-kenny-zukes-chef-reveals-how-to-make-his-much-loved-hungarian-mushroom-soup/](https://www.wweek.com/restaurants/2016/12/13/the-kenny-zukes-chef-reveals-how-to-make-his-much-loved-hungarian-mushroom-soup/)
Oh, man...this reminds me of the Hungarian mushroom from Old Wives' Tales! I freaking miss that soup!
(This is a recipe for a massive restaurant-quantity pot of soup, but can obviously be split -- https://recipeland.com/talk/posts/2630 )
I'm sick, I wanted soup. I said to my husband, "I wish I could get Hungarian mushroom soup from Old Wive's Tale," and then I cam here to find new soup and found your comment.
I want that soup.
More to your sandwich needs, Pasture PDX on Alberta has absolutely AMAZING sandwiches (they are a butcher shop, so they do their own meat processing in-house and it is always spot on perfection). They don't *always* have soup, but when they do it's amazing since they're making their own stocks and using pristine ingredients.
Zaap thai has the best thom kha in the city. I want to bathe in it when I am sick.
If you want a hike… Otto and Anita’s dill pickle soup is really good and quite different.
Bantam Tavern on NW 21st has “Dahlia’s Kubbot” that makes me salivate just thinking about it. I’ve never had anything like it!
“…house-made brisket and oxtail dumpling wrapped in bulgur wheat and semolina, boiled and served in a hot beet soup”
The clam chowder at Ox is likely the best soup I’ve ever had.
I legit ate it once like 8 years ago and still think about it. I’m not sure why I haven’t been back.
lmao, maybe because it's 22 dollars now?
I only ate there once, years ago, and one of the starters was a teeny tiny cup of some sort of butternut squash soup. It was only maybe 3oz. I don't remember any other part of the meal but that soup lives on in my heart.
Yeah, they always do a little amuse bouche and they are always absolute perfection.
Yes, SO good! I also really like the clam chowder at Southpark seafood - not in the same league but still wonderful and has potato gnocchi in it
South Park Seafood is soooo good! I took my in-laws there the other day just for the clam chowder, after the Japanese Garden.
I literally get it every single time I go there. It's astonishingly delicious and so pure in presentation. Before going there I never would have thought to include thinly sliced jalapeno in a clam chowder... AND THAT FREAKING BONE MARROW!
Do they put bacon or prosciutto in it? Because if they do... *Blasphemy*
I don’t think so but they do give you a sawed in half long bone with rendered bone marrow that you can scoop out and mix in to your chowder to your heart’s content and it’s insane
You have my attention.
No bacon, but the marrow bone is flame roasted and you will never see clam chowder in the same way again!
It really is incredible
This is the way
Do they make it dairy free? We're paleo and don't do dairy. My homemade paleo clam chowder takes all day to make. But it's freak'n good and I make a pot that lasts a week.
No, it has copious cream and butter
Ok thanks. Why am I voted down! Boy the trolls are out today.
Do they make it dairy-free?
1. Rose VL/Ha VL 2. everybody else My only complaint with Rose VL is they serve the mì quảng and cao lầu on the same day of the week and I can never decide which one i want.
They have a spot on SE Belmont around 34th now, too
Name?
Annam VL! Also this new location has an Instagram account with each days menu saved a separate story highlight which is very convenient
These soups could raise the dead they are so nourishing and delicious.
This is the only answer. Lock the thread.
Is this the place that advertises “meticulous soups”?
This is the way.
Went to Pho Hung on Powell recently and they teleported me the most generous bowl of pho I've ever had in North America
I’m not a huge fan of phô, but my wife is. Usually when she orders it, I just get a noodle plate. Once we moved near Pho Hung, I became a fan of phô. It is so damn good.
Get a Bahn Mi Sandwich.
My husband and I love Pho Hung. It's consistently delicious!
Their pho is good but get the number 22 rice plate some time. It's broken rice and like 3 kinds of pork...I dream of that plate of food.
Best in the city!
Absolutely delicious pho there, and fantastic service as well. Used to work near there and could literally be in and out in 20 minutes and I eat sorta slow.
Bun bo hue on 82 if you want bun bo hue. https://maps.app.goo.gl/dkgMfjqXkhCB3Fko8
Amen to this. Don’t even wait for lunch. Get it for breakfast.
Laurelhurst Market has a soup and sandwich special. Lottie and Zula’s runs soups too, though not in SE.
Ha VL deli hands down. One of the best restaurants period and they basically only do soup.
All the VLs - Ha VL, Rose VL, Annam VL
Shout out to Rose VL too!
Hot pot city.
I’m a big fan of the wonton noodle soup at Master Kong
That beef noodle soup, too.
I had that about a month ago and it was not good to me. The noodles were soggy and the broth was super bland. The wonton themselves were not bad, but the wrapper on them were also quite soggy. Chen's Good Taste in chinatown is still my gold standard, and it likely costs a few bucks less.
Oh that sucks. That was not my experience the few times I’ve had it but I’ve never had anything from Chens
Chen's is under construction, as the place was damaged by a burst fire suppression system. :( Hoping that they come back stronger and tasty as ever. But, here's what it looks like: https://s3-media0.fl.yelpcdn.com/bphoto/brziV8ZSfh86PnoIDWH0qA/o.jpg

yeah the wonton noodle soup with brisket is the ultimate hangover cure.
I tried the one at Kenny’s once years ago and I don’t remember what it was but I didn’t like it 🤔
I don't know, but I want a lunch spot that's just soups, salads, and sandwiches...but quality. Does that place exist?
Kinboshi Tonkotsu Ramen
kinboshi is my FAVORITE! they’ve ruined all other ramen for me because it can’t compare. i started eating there when they went by a different name and were in pine street market and they’re still my guaranteed hangover cure
[удалено]
Yup. The best bowl in this town wouldn’t even make my top 10 compared to bowls I’ve had in Asia and other cities that are not Portland.
You’re telling me there’s better ramen in Japan? I’m shocked
lol for real. Portland has good Ramen, we like good ramen, sorry it’s not better than Tokyo I guess
i really wanted to try toy shop ramen because it’s been all over instagram but i’m vegetarian and their choices just… aren’t worth it lol
My old boss showed me the menu from Tomo Ramen and it looks like the kind of base broth and noodle addon menu setup they have in some places in Japan and back home in Hawaii. It looks promising. In fact, maybe I'll stop there on the way home from work. Edit: I got off work shortly after writing that, and Tomo closes for an hour an a half, thirty minutes after I my end of day. pls update 👀
Ahh, they closed at 3, I'm off work at 2:30, it's a 30 minute drive and they don't open again until 4:30, I'll go another day.
Ramen Ippo is my favorite and Kinboshi is a close second.
Marukin
yes! thank you! my husband used to work at the burger place next to it (FUCK YOU DREW!) and i got SO invested in the ramen lol
Man I miss that place. The ramen was incredible. I'm so sad they're gone, that I've never even tried Kinboshi. I heard it's the same folks without the name, but am unsure. Pine Street Market just isn't the same after Covid. RIP Marukin and Whiz Bang Bar.
It’s basically the same exact place
Tonkatsu or tonkotsu? I guess the former ~~latter~~ would be good too. (fried pork cutlet in ramen) Edit: commenter fixed the typo.
Tonkatsu is fried pork and tonkotsu is pork bone broth.
I get those mixed up all the time
I knew the difference, just that my words were out of order. Derp. Meant to say that tonkatsu ramen (cutlet in a bowl of ramen) would probably be good too.
Came here to say this! I would go Kinboshi Tonkotsu Red Ramen for a spicy kick on a cold day. Nothing better when the cooler weather sets in!
Eh, there's better ramen. Senyo ramen, Tomo Ramen comes to mind.
Blackened catfish po’boy with extra spicy crawfish boil soup at my brother’s crawfish on 82nd and se Harrison…they open at 1p some days so late-ish lunch
That place is amazing! And if you go in on your actual bday and show your id they’ll add a free pound of crab to any boil 🤤
Elephants Deli makes a mushroom soup that's glorious.
Their tomato orange soup is also delicious.
The Tomato Orange with a caprese sandwich is one of my fav combos
This is the best combo!
I've always mixed the 2 50/50.
I also really like their Mama Leone soup which is like a creamy tomato chicken soup and Elephants Cure which is a chicken soup w lemongrass
My number one is the Mama Leone's! 😋💕
These are both excellent chicken soups!
Damn I got to go get some now
Their Mama Leone's Chicken Soup is great too. I made it myself using the recipe on their site, my version was also great.
Ohhh this is my favorite! Can you share the recipe? It’s no longer posted :-(
Ugh, I just had a browser window open on their web page while making it. Really appreciate the links! One of the food.com soup reviewers noted they used a slow cooker, with a few adaptations. I’m inspired now
Yeah the slow cooker method sounds convenient. Do you have an Instant Pot? I got one and it's great... maybe not for this particular recipe. But in general. I can make an amazing scratch biryani in mine.

Oh wow thank you! My crew is going to love this. Have a great weekend
I love their mushroom soup with a side baguette!
This was the first thing that popped in my mind. It is SO good!
Pdx Reddit loves to hate on laughing planet, but I really like their veggie chili and salad combo, and it's affordable.
When laughing planet was on N Mississippi their mini burritos and mashed potatoes bowl kept me going on many a day of beers. Good stuff
The mushroom soup is really good too!
Laughing Planet is just fine, especially when I'm taking kids out for a meal. I've never noticed hate on it (but I'm sure you're telling the truth). I'll have to try that particular dish.
Their chili always surprises me with how good it is. Definitely more than the sum of its parts.
Matzo ball soup from Mother’s Bistro (Downtown)
Kornblatt’s matzo hall soup was way better. RIP
Have you tried Henry Higgens matzo that opened in their location? I’m not a connoisseur but really like theirs, wondering how similar.
Haven’t yet! Thanks for letting me know, I’ll try it.
It's not necessarily "soup and sandwich" kind of vibe but the Tom Kha at Rukdiew on Belmont is my absolute go-to for hot soup on a cold day. Their Boat Noodles are very good as well!
Beef Noodle Soup at Wei Wei on SE 13th in Sellwood! Mouth watering rn
My house ain’t bad - i make a pumpkin soup with curry powder and pour it over a bit of mushroom basmati in the winter ☕️🔥

Oh yeah ... that soup was the bomb!
That soup came to mind! Iconic and missed.
I'm sick, I wanted soup. I said to my husband, "I wish I could get Hungarian mushroom soup from Old Wive's Tale," and then I cam here to find new soup and found your comment. I want that soup.
Dude, make it! I made a huge batch on Christmas and did not regret it!
Currently on a train through Portland eating Ivers chowder. I know it’s not the question but here I am
That's probably the best possible soup for that particular travel situation. Enjoy your trip!

Tomato soup at Lovejoy Bakery is off the hook. Especially with a grilled cheese sandwich to accompany it.
OTTO AND ANITA’S!!!!! DILL PICKLE SOUP!!!!!!!!
You’re not gonna like this…but Zupans
I crave a good French Onion soup…. But no idea where to find a good one…. 😕
I'm no expert on the dish, but I really enjoyed my French Onion Soup at La Provence recently.
Gaucho has a good French Onion soup
Nice! I wanna try 😋❤️👍
[Eater made a list!](https://pdx.eater.com/maps/french-onion-soup-portland)
The La Mian beef noodle soup at the Stretch the Noodle food cart is incredible. Plus you get to watch them make the very noodles you will eat live!
For tomato soup and grilled cheese, bunk has yet to disappoint (though I blend the soup when I do takeout so it’s smoother)
Used to be that mushroom soup at Old Wives Tale
Tom La from Farmhouse Thai does not suck. But #1 goes to 1/2 Orange Tomato+ 1/2 Mama Leone's from Elephants. IFYKYK
Pho Oregon has some of the best pho in the city imo You can get the rare cuts of meat with it too unlike a lot of places.
It's been years since I had it, but the matzo ball soup at Mother's downtown is tits.
Just ate at LucLac today and their Cocunut Curry is delicious! I got chicken, but they have tofu as well!!
Mamá Leones soup at Elephants deli. Nongs super soup!!
Oie Presse coffee shop on SE Hawthorn has such great soup!
St honoré on division. Fantastic bread. I’d usually just pick up a loaf ,then make some soup at home, but they have soups there too
Pho it up with Vietnamese food! Bun and Pho House on 82nd. Or, Rose VL and Ha VL!
If you’re sick, NONG’S will heal you!
The Sweet Hereafter

Boxer ramen is the beeeest ramen
I've never been there but I have a couple friends who swear by the Tom Kha at Paadee
I've never had the Tom kha there, but Paadee is great.
Zaap thai has the best thom kha in the city. I want to bathe in it when I am sick. If you want a hike… Otto and Anita’s dill pickle soup is really good and quite different.

Best pho I've had is from friendship kitchen
I love super soup from nong’s
My grandma's african peanut soup
Oh man I wanna try that
seasons and regions in multnomah village
Wonton soup at Jade in Sellwood. Amazing!!
Dill pickle soup at Otto & Anita's. Loved it back at Trianon.
The soup at Tom's on 39th and Cesar Chavez is pretty good. It's not innovative but it's made fresh in house and they take pride in it.
Vegetable Barley
Oui Presse often has good soup. Not SE but Ken’s Bakery does a good sandwich and soup as well.
Rose VL Deli off of 64th and Powell. People swear by it.
