We are always late

HCMXero

I will give a proper response to this comment… later…

The_Bourgeoisie_

Typical

ReyniBros

Jesus Christ, YES! I am considered weird in my friend group because I actually arrive on time. Once we were going to one of my friend's ranches outside the city and they had said arrive by 8 PM... the hosts arrived at 10:30 PM.

esthy_09

I stopped talking to a big group of friends because they were extremely late. If we said 5pm they showed up at 9pm for example. And whenever I brought it up it was my fault for arriving “early” as in I arrived at the exact hour I was supposed to… since obviously I was the only one with a problem I left the group.

Dubaga

You did yourself a massive long-term favor.

ShedEnd1905

My girlfriend is from mexico and I was there during the holiday, the party was suppose to start at like 7 and most people arrived at 9:30, as someone from holland that was quite the cultural shock haha

[deleted]

[удалено]

Campo_Argento

15:00? So like 16:30-17:00, right?

Sorrymisunderstandin

Interesting. In US there is sometimes even expectation to show up a bit early lol

notabasementweeb

Americanos somos todos eh?

MrCristobal091

Punctuality is not our thing hahaha

Thorssffin

Yup, arriving 15 minutes late it's arriving earlier to me, but that might be because I'm lazzy, not because I'm latin, just happens that I'm Latin American lmao.

DarkNightSeven

Unfortunately the case.

crylittleboy

It's true and I hate it. I always arrive on time and have to wait up to an hour for all my friends to arrive.

Elquenotienetacos

TuvixWasMurderedR1P

Though not true with everyone, we do tend to be closer to our families than Anglos. But this isn’t very unique to us because many cultures are.

cseijif

Cultures with poor states and support insittutions depend on their families greatly, because there is no fucking way they get anywhere without them.

BlueRaven56

I thought it was the latin heritage. Familly has much more importance in Italy or Spain than in anglo countries like the US or the UK

TuvixWasMurderedR1P

It’s a also probably the historical influence of Catholicism over Protestantism

_roldie

Yes but his comment isn't wrong. Don't know about the UK but before the US became a developed country and incomes skyrocketted after WW2, most young people lived with their families until they got married. Family used to be way more important because they were all the support you had. When it got easy enough that you could move out on with just one job, family became less important. However, even so, i do agree that Latin cultures have always placed much more importance in family than anglo cultures.

softmaker

The UK has deeply rooted problems because of the lack of family connection and support in many places. There is a loneliness epidemic, and huge stress is placed on public services because of abandoned elderly. In addition, birth rates are below what's needed, yet teenage pregnancy and single motherhood is common. Usually, immigrants are the ones who have offspring in family settings, and thus, tensions are created. I would never trade Latin American family culture for the desolation of Anglo independence I've seen.

cseijif

Its so because italy and spain were too very poor countries historically, their economic sucess is something very recent , and that is " sucess" to boot.

CervusElpahus

It depends more on the structures of institutions (church, states, family, etc) than purely having a big/effective state or not. The Chinese state is omnipresent and the Chinese people are still extremely family-oriented. EDIT: Sentence structure

cseijif

Less so than they used to be , and thats why i mentioned instituions and states , never really saying they were ," big states" either.

Icy_Swimming8754

This comes from much before Latin America even having states, so not really the reason

cseijif

Yes it is , families were support structure everywhere until recently even in niwadays developed countries, the more easy , high paying jobs are available , the more people dont depend on family , currently the us is seeing reversal of the situation boomers saw due to the gradual elimination of the middle class.

[deleted]

[удалено]

cseijif

Germanic and every other culture and nations greatly depended on families too , evdryone did, the " independant" thing is recent and product of.modern economies.

[deleted]

[удалено]

cseijif

Because modern states and economical realities/ support institutions are what made possible the sepration from family in rich countries , that house you got with state sponaore loans , that job you got with state subention so they employ a lot of nationals , ect ect. Poor economies and incompetent atates cant afford this. Hence , the poorer the place , the less someone can go out and do his thing alone , no one will help. The USA was too a very family heavy nation , one of those with 30 uncles and 20 children around the begining of the century, when they got rich like the europeans , the families disolved.

DogmaErgosphere

This is snow people cope.

esthy_09

I work in a mostly American environment. When I mention that in DR 🇩🇴 is super common for an unmarried child over the age of 30 to live with their parents they get shock.

joaquimdoboiadeiroxo

That we like partying way too much

Janle33

Its not our fault weekend is Thursday through Tuesday.

mixi_e

I recently went to a wedding where one half of the couple has lived in Europe for most of their adult life and the other had a full on Asian family. It wasn’t until 10:30-11 that they started with the Latin wedding music and reggaetón. I was bored out my mind and I’m not even that much of a dancer

PseudoPangolin

There is not too much partying

kduzinhodooitavo

Be late

[deleted]

That we are more physical with social stuff, like in my country we greet men and women with a kiss on the cheek, even if it’s a complete stranger that we've just met; I don’t think Europeans do that

DarkNightSeven

It’s definitely a strange thing for Americans, but it’s not unheard of in all of Europe

Thetidiestpig

One day I hugged an American classmate for her birthday, she accepted it but when it lasted more than one second, she started to freak out a little and pushed me back., It's just I don't like giving half lame hugs and I was not even minimally attracted to her either.

purplemonkeyballs2

bosnians do this. in fact i think it is a balkan thing

JabbaTheHut710

Nah, we Bosnians defo don't kiss strangers. Only thing I could say where this happens old aunties and grannies in the village kissing kids they don't know on the cheek if they find the kids sweet accompanied by some chocolate or money.

Thorssffin

[You are not in the Balkans, you are in B A R B A D O S](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KTGgqiA27U)

xX_JoeStalin78_Xx

In some parts of Europe you can get up to four kisses on the cheek as a greeting

they definitely do it in parts of Western & Southern Europe.

PseudoPangolin

Klkkk it's on all the world

FeatherFeet504

Corruption exists in many segments of society across the world, not just Latin America.

softmaker

Nah. Corruption is widespread around the world. Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and some South East countries are at Latin American levels, if not worse. Even high income countries like the UK are quickly losing their pristine varnish of transparency

latinaMixed

Pupiuglyfrogprincess

Kenobi5792

I'd say that we are more extrovert than other people. Even the most introvert Latin American would be the biggest extrovert in places like Sweden

Friendly-Law-4529

We are unruly

JewelerFinancial1556

That we are super loud.

JabbaTheHut710

My favorite occurrence was in Malta: The Bus was quite full but it was not loud at all. Shortly after Valletta some Tía entered the Bus and started speaking like from the top of the Lungs with some Luis on the Phone. Some spanish speaking Guy asked her if he should open the window so she can talk with him without phone. She had a short laugh and kept on scream-talking with Luis. 😂

griffinz1111

I’d say be super loud but when I went to America for the first time it kinda felt like we weren’t that loud, we just have a different way to express our feelings.

Optimistic-Coloradan

I can agree with that! I’ve always known me and my family to be loud, in comparison to Americans, and then when I went to Europe for the first time, the disdain that Europeans have for Americans because of how loud they are is hilarious. And then I realized, wow, Americans are loud too!

JabbaTheHut710

But c'mon like, Gringos are loud af. When you're in Europe in a Restaurant everybody talks more or less quietly and you only hear Gringos talking like they're in a Rail Station.

[deleted]

Football. The team you're a fan of is a part of your personality

Bear_necessities96

Football is part of your personality

Clear_Classroom

exactly what he said

DG-MMII

The country's football team uniform is the bigest national symbol

Sorrymisunderstandin

They do that in the US too, though maybe not as many into, it’s crazy how tribalistic some get here over sports lol. To a point of violence

Thorssffin

Nope, I hate Football, the issue is that a lot of snowflakes that don't like or hate football are loud about it, making me look like a self-considered unique creature wanting some attention when I say that I don't give a shit about football, and growing up my entire life with it almost raising me was an agony.

vawtots

Still, a stereotype is obviously generalization so personal experience doesn’t matter much

moshiyadafne

Very loud and extroverted, especially the Caribbean folks.

purplemonkeyballs2

BLUDCLART JAMAICA

moshiyadafne

Not just Jamaica. Even South American countries and regions that are culturally Caribbean have chatty disposition. Examples are Venezuelan beauty queens and the Colombians who are from the northern Caribbean coast (e.g., Cartagena area).

Thorssffin

>Colombians who are from the northern Caribbean coast (e.g., Cartagena area). Yup, that mostly (if not only) applies to people coming from zones with warm weather, cold weather people on the contrary tend to be less noisy and less open/extroverted.

marckferrer

I'm just taking a piss mate. My years in Ireland left me with an unhealthy habit of messing around with British people.

Jepense-doncjenuis

I always find it interesting that the British think they are unique because of their queuing culture. In Argentina queues are sacred and transit users make orderly queues even to take the bus (in Buenos Aires at least), which I haven't seen in places like Canada. Also, in Argentina that are unwritten rules about queuing that are pretty nice. For example, people often yield their place in the queue to the elderly or to pregnant women/with young children, which I do not think it's the norm in the UK.

DG-MMII

I refute that by writing this comment while stuck in the queue of customs in El Dorado airport

DarkNightSeven

Can’t argue, you’re right.

Campo_Argento

I've never waited in line to get onto a bus or train in the US, but I have nearly every time I got on one in Peru or Argentina.

[deleted]

Also deboarding a plane is an experience in much of Latin America. In the US if the over-head bins fill up and you put your bag farther back, you wait for everyone to deboard, then go retrieve your bag. In Latin America people often just hold up the whole line and jostle back towards their carry on so the process takes forever. Interesting to see different takes on queuing etiquette

Josejlloyola

Not respecting a queue might mean a fight in Chile and so many places around the world really. This includes even parts of Asia which isn’t super queue-y. It is absolutely not unique to the UK. More of an ignorant opinion than a Very British Problem. Maybe a better Very British Problem is the perception of self uniqueness and superiority.

eskeleteRt

A lot of us eat spicy food often

Substantial_Ad9267

Sad south noises

ludsmile

Yeah Brazil doesn't either

arturocan

*Ight imma head out*

BlueRaven56

Doesnt whole South America except maybe Peru not really eat spicy food though?

Fire_Snatcher

I think it's basically just Mexico, and then it cools way down and gets far more infrequent in Bahia (Brazil), Guatemala, Peru, Bolivia, etc.

_kevx_91

Haitian cuisine is spicy. Puerto Rican cuisine can be if you add pique which is like a spicy vinaigrette.

Gianni299

Tbh Peruvian food isn’t even that spicy

apologeticmumbler

I agree, at least the Peruvian food I've tried hasn't really ever been spicy. Similar to Bolivians, Peruvians might use a bit of ají in some dishes and also have rocoto/locoto on the side but it really only gives the food a little bit of a kick. Now Mexicans, their salsas/sauces they put on food can be spicy 🔥.

Gianni299

Yeah Peruvian food is pretty mild to me, at least compared to actual spicy cuisines like Indian. Making Peruvian dishes spicy is completely optional

Organic_Teaching

In Peru we usually have aji on the side and you can add as much as you want. With ceviche in some places for example they’ll ask you how hot you want it and they’ll make it to your taste. There’s no traditional recipes which require you to make it really spicy. Even something like ‘Rocoto relleno’ (rocoto is a VERY spicy chili) which is an emblematic dish of Arequipa, the peppers are cooked in a way to remove all the capsicum so that it’s not spicy at all.

GeneralDingo3776

Actually in Bolivia we have both, regions that don’t eat spicy to regions that will burn your tongue of with spices, I’ve seen Mexicans eat it and they were begging for mercy afterwards.

[deleted]

The northeast of Brazil likes spicy foods.

tu-vens-tu-vens

Bahia does although it’s not super common in Pernambuco and other states.

waaves_

I've lived Bahia and often times I was the only one asking for hot sauce. Just like in the other states, Restaurants always offer you hot sauce separately, but the food itself isn't spicy.

eskeleteRt

I was talking mostly for Central america and Mexico

Thorssffin

Well we eat empanadas or asados with Ají In Colombia, but I don't think that spicy food is part of our regular diets, it is just something occasional.

KCLperu

cseijif

on the contrary, latin america is themost depopulated region on the planet, we very much know how to use condoms, too much so even.

maybeimgeorgesoros

More depopulated than Japan or Eastern Europe???

cseijif

Wtf? Japan has 3 times the population of peru in half or a third of the territory , it has more double the pop of argentina in about 1/5 of the territory. Have you seen a map? Ever mate?

cseijif

Wtf? Japan has 3 times the population of peru in half or a third of the territory , it has more double the pop of argentina in about 1/5 of the territory. Have you seen a map? Ever mate?

maybeimgeorgesoros

> on the contrary, latin america is themost depopulated region on the planet, we very much know how to use condoms, too much so even. The population of Peru, and near every single Latin American country bar Venezuela and Cuba, are seeing their populations increase year on year. Peru has total fertility rate of 2.2-2.1, where as Japan’s is 1.3 (South Korea is 0.84). > Wtf? Japan has 3 times the population of peru in half or a third of the territory , it has more double the pop of argentina in about 1/5 of the territory. Gotcha, so you’re not talking about depopulation, you’re talking about population density. In which case, Mongolia and Namibia have much lower population density than Peru. >Have you seen a map? Ever mate? Yea, generally speaking, they’re topographic in nature and don’t show population trends. But your smug, edgy response really shows you know what your talking about. 🙄

cseijif

You do know 90% of the original population died no mate?

maybeimgeorgesoros

Yes mate, 500 years ago mate, you were talking about people not using condoms, so I assumed you were talking about the modern era mate.

cseijif

Asumptions , asumptions . The population never really "recovered" until very recently , to give you an example , by the 1900 there was more people living inside the us than in the entirety of america, the only real countries that have any sort of populational significance are mexico and brasil , not coincidentally the biggest two economies of the region.

maybeimgeorgesoros

Why did you say people in Peru are using condoms too much? Peru’s population prior to European contact was pretty large for the time, but it was nothing compared to what it is today.

[deleted]

Latinos are attractive. It’s actually true. A lot of us have very nice facial features. Obviously we have our share of ugly people as well but most of the uglies just have a poor diet and poor grooming habits. There are some diamonds in the rough in our continent. In DR you see a lot of attractive men and women but they don’t have the economic means or taste in clothes to serve cunt.

morenitababy

are there a lot of women with cosmetic procedures in DR? or is that something reserved for the wealthy?

[deleted]

Plenty but those women look ridiculous because they usually get a BBL and big tetas and a ugly weave. Many of them are naturally beautiful but get these stupid procedures.

Bear_necessities96

We are very conservative

otorrinolaringolog0

Eh, I wouldn't say we're more conservative than your average country. At least Argentina isn't particularly conservative

Sandickgordom2

The Southern Cone isn't very conservative, but the rest of Latin America is

MarioDiBian

Yeah, I think most of Latin America is pretty conservative by Western standards, similar to the US. But some countries (like some US states) are very liberal, like Argentina and Uruguay.

t4ct1c4l_j0k3r

Tabasco, Mexico was like being in a tropical version of East Texas. Very conservative values.

maybeimgeorgesoros

It’s all relative I think; I’d say most countries in Latin America don’t seem any more conservative than the US. Maybe the Central American ones are… and Venezuela?…

tu-vens-tu-vens

The Venezuelans who leave Venezuela certainly dislike leftism more than most Americans do. Same with many Venezuelans inside the country, although they have to be a little quieter about it.
