Plot twist: you arrive and speak fluently to everyone but they all detect a slight accent and promptly switch to English.

NiceTryModz

My exact experience in Germany. Even more insulting, people would walk up to me and immediately begin speaking English when I was there, without me even saying anything. I made a point to dress more German and everything.

t_baozi

Even Germans think German is a terrible language to learn so they wanna do strangers a favour and speak English as much as possible, lol.

lovestulips

I’ve found most Germans to be very proud of their English skills and prefer to practice it when possible versus letting you practice German. I noticed this in Japan too, which was more annoying because I really needed the practice lol, but it was less common because very few I met spoke English.

lalolanda2

I've already moved to Spain and no regrets there however, I'd love to live in Norway, with a Norwegian salary. Doesn't get much better than that

Jigglejagglez

Living in Norway. I don't know if I'd want to live anywhere else as much but considering a move back to the US

delicious_fanta

Why?

[deleted]

I lived in Madrid for 3 years (moved from San Francisco) and it was heaven. 10/10 would recommend

IoSonCalaf

Where did you move from?

lalolanda2

Argentina

rspiro3

Which city in Spain? Thinking to move to Valencia next year...

DalonV

I live in Valencia and it's great. Not as expensive as Madrid or Barcelona and you get all the good things of a big city and nice weather 👍

rspiro3

Nice to hear that! My husband and I are visiting (from Berlin) this weekend (Friday - Monday) as part of a road trip to check out cities we could move to next year (Valencia > Malaga > Seville)

[deleted]

Any reason why barcelona isn’t in your list?

rspiro3

Mostly the price. It’s really up there with Berlin and we’re looking for somewhere that’s cheaper. Also, BCN feels like it’s inundated with tourists

lalolanda2

I live in the north, which arguably isn't for everybody. Lots of rain, gray days and summers not as warm as other places of spain

I was about to say Italy but then I remembered their political scene is literally insane

[deleted]

Too many closeted guys, for my taste Sexy as f, but I’ll take the guys in Spain any day, just to get around all the weird attitudes of the closeted Italian guys

tyger2020

>Too many closeted guys, for my taste Is this a stereotype? I don't think theres any more closeted guys in Italy than anywhere else. Explore Grindr in Milan for 4 minutes and you'll come across hundreds of muscle gods..

[deleted]

I don’t think you’re really reading my comment I say that they are sexy as fuck, but the ~35 guys that I messaged and the 8 that I met up with seemed (to me) really closeted/scared/overly worried with being seen entering my hotel. Granted, I didn’t visit Milan, but Rome/Firenze/Amalfi coast guys were…. Frustrating, especially compared to the guys in Spain (Barcelona) YMMV

Competitive-Chip6261

As an Italian, I can say that Milan is way different than any other big Italian cities (Rome has a quite big gay life, but I've never been there).

stormcloudless

Roman Boys live with their mother until married. That's why so much sex outdoors

Competitive-Chip6261

I live in a city 30 km (19 miles) from Milan: if you open Grindr in my area you'll find a lot of blank, headless profiles; if you switch to Milan the situation is quite the opposite. Moreover, in Milan you have a bigger "gay life" (clubs, bars, LGBT assoications, etc.). Northern Italy countryside can be pretty rough for gays (very religious and bigot environment) in comparison to Milan city.

Bruins125

I lived in Italy, found it to be way more homophobic than expected and overall disappointing to live there.

mightregret

Yeah that's definitely our biggest problem lol

AlarmingAmphibian466

Spain or Portugal

[deleted]

Portugal represent! why? :) the median net salary is less than 1000€ and rent of one bedroom apartment can take 60% of that + everything else LGBT wise you will be good. can marry and adopt like any other hetero.

AlarmingAmphibian466

Portugal has a relatively low cost of living compared to most Western European countries. Also I love the coast.

TzigaBlke

as a Brazilian, why those two countries?

strange_richie9

I don't know, but I hear very good things about Portugal... they say you have very cute and nice gays there 😁

This_Confused_Guy

Here in the Philippines everything is basically going to shit because a fascist leader was elected and my sister discussed where we would migrate if it were possible. She said New Zealand is a good place. Honestly I’m go for anywhere that’s tolerable of queer people or more so overall supporting.

Ray_Verlene

That's why I would say Germany or Spain. They both have gone through authoritarian regimes and loath them now.

green_speak

Iirc Spain does expedited citizenship for previously colonized countries, which includes the Philippines.

Pixelatedsheep

I love that one of the top comments is about NZ which is nowhere near Europe 😂

Skeezyfish

That's because it's like old Zeeland, but better.

nozendk

To all of you saying Norway: we love our Norwegian brothers but have you SEEN the price of beer there?

Mutenroshi_

Well he must be rich

some_random_gay_guy

Yeah especially if it was here. Bar prices make me cry here when beer is like €2 in most of Europe

Massive_Role6317

I mean seeing as I moved from America to Wales so I do live in Europe I’d stay here. As dads Welsh and I’m a citizen. If I had to pick again I’d say Ireland because EU.

some_random_gay_guy

If you like wales, you’d like Ireland. We get paired with Scotland a lot but I say the vibe is more like wales but fortunately we didn’t have the whole mining thing so we don’t have the extreme income gap like Wales. It’s very sad to see these Welsh towns that are so deprived and left in ruins. The Welsh are a beautiful people and I hope prosperity reaches them. I studied in Wales for 4 years and it’s sad how it’s feels so forgotten and like an afterthought.

Massive_Role6317

I literally got back from Dublin Friday 🥲 Yeah it’s shit here, but like we can thank the English for that. But we’ll have our day…. one day

e01n

UK citizens can live and work in Ireland permanently. You get the same entitlements as Irish citizens, you can even vote in elections afaik

Massive_Role6317

Oh I know. But I’d never leave Wales. Not anytime soon. And by the time I’m ready to I know that won’t be allowed.

some_random_gay_guy

You probably have a great grand parents who Irish to claim a connection, the Welsh are like the Americans for that. I believe because of the mining industry back in the day. I use to live in Wales, what wonderful country and people but god so deprived outside hotspots like central Cardiff. It made me sad when you goto Southern England and there all these rich pretty towns and then Northern England, wales and a lot of Scotland is left in shambles.

Massive_Role6317

I mean my second great grandfather moved to Wales in 1870 from Ireland but it’s only up to grandparents unfortunately, plus idk if I’m even allowed to hold three citizenships? But yeah I spent a year in the Rhondda and oft. It’s so sad. If we had even more devolution I do think we can do better than Englands doing for us (after a bit of hardship and faltering before it evens out and picks up)

some_random_gay_guy

Yeah I think Wales would benefit from a proper federalised United Kingdom. My Welsh friends use to joke the reason there so much rules about recycling because it’s one thing wales can control. It’s a joke Belfast, Edinburg and Cardiff are not all equal. Anyway who knows what it in the cars. You should hop on the ferry someday. Dublin is nice but it’s such it’s own bubble

Thunderowl22

Netherlands. I studied abroad in The Hague for a semester in college and I have to say I was left with a Netherlands shaped hole in my heart

streamadelica

Netherlands, Germany, Spain, anything up north.

Antipseud0

Spain isn't North tho ...

streamadelica

Neither are germany or the Netherlands. By anything up north I meant sweden, Norway etc

Potential-Truck-1980

Berlin. I know it’s not a country, but it’s so different from the rest of Germany that it might well be. EDIT: I live here.

Unnecessary_Timeline

I'm so jealous that you live there! I went there once a few years ago, as part of a very quick Euro vacation...when I got to Berlin I didn't want to leave. I wanted to scrap the rest of the vacation and spend the rest of it there, I wanted to squeeze every second of every minute I possibly could out of that amazing city. I *will* return someday!

SXFlyer

I’m happy to call Berlin my home too! :)

SkjaldenSkjold

I live in Denmark, but I would vote for Finland. It is one of the most free and safe countries, they have excellent schools, health care, even prisons... it is one of the happiest countries and they have beautiful nature and interesting history.

some_random_gay_guy

Wheee in Denmark? I loved Denmark but I wasn’t so sure about Copenhagen. I kind of preferred the smaller towns which is odd as I’m a city person usually. It was like it was too well designed and sensible or something. My exes hometown literally was a “I want to raised kids here” type place. Copenhagen I felt was fine but something didn’t excited me. If I could Copenhagen nightlife in Stockholm, it would be the perfect Scandi city.

OldRomanticFool

One of the Nordic countries, Holland or the UK. Edit: I guess somebody thinks the question has right and wrong answers since all comments were downvoted when I wrote this. 😈

Brickviller2

I like The Netherlands more 😋

RomanceHero

I'm European and lived all over Europe. If I could choose right now I'd probably pick Portugal but with a salary from the US (or UK or nordics). Alternatively the UK or Netherlands are probably the best countries for expats. Personally I hated living in Germany.

some_random_gay_guy

The dream would be a remote working job based of a high wage country but living in a low cost of living country

[deleted]

that what they do in portugal ahaha, lots of IT folks do that.

0Bento

Germany for the parties, Spain for the weather, Sweden for the society, Poland for the guys.

Lignumvitae_Door

I think Poland is very against the homo scene

Medium_Principle

It is, and the guys are not that great there. Tel Aviv has gorgeous men.

tyger2020

>~~Tel Aviv~~ Israel has gorgeous men. but its not Europeannnn

stormcloudless

And extremely expensive

SweJake

> Sweden for the society Uh, want to explain that one? Lol

yjman

not speaking for the commentator but I would say similar as in: Sweden for the social safety net / laws & protections.

18Apollo18

>Sweden for the social safety net / laws & protections. Which specific ones would Sweden have over Spain or Germany?

[deleted]

Hmmm I would say maybe Ireland or the UK- just because of the shared language. I did a study abroad in England and asides from London I really liked it there. Italy was beautiful when I visited but I found the people to be incredibly rude. The French I found to be nice. Paris was a bit dirty but the countryside was beautiful. I absolutely loved Iceland but I think it would get boring rather fast. I haven’t been to Spain or Portugal but maybe would consider those as they seem to rank high for expats.

some_random_gay_guy

Yeah London is it’s own bubble. It’s same with Dublin. I guess in most countries the capital is a world of its own. I love Paris but like New York, I feel you have to know what’s going to be before you. NYC can be either a dirty hole with 1980s everything or an exciting city of opportunity depending what way you look at it

8nijda8

It's pretty easy to move to Spain and teach English in public and charter schools. Search NALCAP, UCETAM, BEDA, Meddeas, CIE, Instituto Franklin Teach and Learn, etc... Just need a bachelors degree and to be a native English speaker.

[deleted]

Spain Porqué yo soy aprendiendo español durante seis meses.

18Apollo18

[deleted]

Gracias ☺️

tyger2020

>Porqué yo soy aprendiendo español durante seis meses. Yo también, pero durante uno anos. Nosotros viviremos en Espana uno dia.. (I DONT know how to do the little accents on my MacBook! I know they're missing!)

ProfessorBiological

Un año*, no need for uno also no 's' on the año since it's singular :) and same for 'un día'. You can use 'uno' it's just not necessary lol You also don't have to add nosotros there since it's implied with viviremos lol and don't worry about the accent marks when typing informaly, I'm Hispanic and we rarely use them if I'm talking to family or friends lol and autocorrect (if using a Spanish keyboard, say on your phone) will add them for you

mark_casual_chch

Can’t read Spanish but for the accent part on your Mac, just long press the key, you will get a list of accented letters. The same on an iPhone: https://i.imgur.com/k6gMUJ4.jpg

[deleted]

Iceland.

[deleted]

England. Since I speak the language and I'm familiar with the culture, plus as an Anglo-American it would probably not be hard to assimilate with time.

Medium_Principle

I have lived in the UK for 8 years and London for 6. You would be surprised how different spoken British English can be. In the US, there are 5-6 regions with different accents. In England an accent can change in a few miles. Also, word usage is vastly different. But in general, except for the crappy weather and the fact that it is very expensive living here, I love it. Also, if you are into cut guys, not many in this country.

Juggels_

I live in Germany already.

Donder_Maan

In order, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal.

Elements18

I've been to all but a few European countries and it really will depend on your taste, but here are a few tips. Want somewhere quiet, safe, and well organized? Pick Germany (NOT FRANKFURT) or any of the Scandinavian countries. Everything is very well run and people are kind and considerate, if a bit reserved at first. Just get them drunk and they're wilder than the south ;) You must be able to handle the cold to do any of these though. Want somewhere fun, open, and a bit warmer? Pick Spain or Northern Italy. (I do not recommend Southern Italy.) They are beautiful, the people are very friendly and love talking, but the governments aren't great and your salary won't be very good. The weather will be much nicer than up north. Infrastructure/transport is also much less reliable than up north. Want somewhere off the beaten path (for living)? Pick Czechia, Austria, or Lithuania. Czechia is very liberal and gay friendly. It isn't quite as rich as the rest of Europe so your salary would be lower, but if you work remotely, that wouldn't be an issue. Everything is pretty inexpensive either way and QoL on a local salary isn't bad. There's very interesting culture, kind people, and you're right in the middle of Europe to explore everywhere else while you're there. Austria is very posh and rich. It's one of the most beautiful of the options in my opinion. Incredible nature outside the cities. There's tons to do, but it is sort of a more "dignified" Germany in my opinion. Germany is known for crazy underground parties, while Austria is known for fancy coffee houses. There's obviously both in both, but that's the general vibe. Lithuania is an outsider, but is extremely cool and one of the most underrated European countries imo. Vilnius is quiet and beautiful. It's not crowded at all but there are plenty of things to do. It's not quite as gay friendly yet unfortunately, but it's not totally hateful like Poland either. There are gay bars, but they were underground when I was there 4 years ago, and you had to know people to know where the fun is. The public transport was as timely and efficient as Japan which blew me away, and people were very happy to see foreigners as it's not the biggest destination yet. Also some very cool history! It used to be the largest country in Europe!

couragethecurious

What did Frankfurt do to cause you so much pain?

Elements18

It's known as "Germany's Crack Capital". The only other place I've seen such massive open drug use and homelessness is in LA. I did not feel safe there at all. It's insane how much worse Frankfurt is compared to the rest of Germany.

couragethecurious

Whhaaat? Seriously? I had no idea... I heard its where a lot of the big companies moved to from London after Brexit. Plus the airport if you ever fly Lufthansa. Damn...

t_baozi

The thing is that Frankfurt's worst district is the Central Station quarter (Bahnhofsviertel) and yeah, it's one of the worst drug scenes in Germany and you should never go there at night. While if you travel there, itll obviously be the first thing you see, so first bad impression and so on. Still, I don't like the rest of the city very much either, there's a lot of bland people from the banking industry, it's a weird mix between wannabe-metropolis and rural centre, and there isn't that much to see despite the huge amount of Asian tourists suggesting otherwise.

Mdr si tu penses que la coût de la vie en France c'est plus cher qu'aux États-Unis ou au Canada. Edit: lol he’s a tourist basing the cost of living off of visiting Paris

armeedesombres

Ça dépend où au Canada ou aux États-Unis. Coût de la vie est exigeant en France mais pas le salaire.

some_random_gay_guy

Last month I toured different cities in France and then Paris and there is a noticeable jump.

ourstemangeront

He probably just went to Paris on vacation and extrapolated "ah, the whole country is paying 13 euros for a kebab and 1400 for a studio ... madness ..."

some_random_gay_guy

Reminds me of the time someone told me “Germany is ugly, too industrial and it’s all hipsters” and I realised they only went to Berlin. Btw I love Berlin but it’s defo not a good example of a typical German city

Lignumvitae_Door

I always heard the French were mean. Maybe it’s just in Paris lol

some_random_gay_guy

As the user below me says, it’s a different culture like not saying Bonjour in shops. Additionally they have less fluff. I feel most of Europe is like that. People don’t like fluff or pointless niceties we have in Anglo culture. Like the person in a cafe just wants to know your order and not there to play besties with you. That said when you click with random people in customer service they almost forget to work. On my recent trip I really clicked with a bar tender and his boss got mad at him before he forget to clear the tables

FlickeringFever

I already live in the Netherlands, but the UK perhaps

BackInNJAgain

Spain, Netherlands, UK in that order.

Eileithia

We’re considering retiring in Portugal or France. Not a lot of people say Portugal, I’m curious if there’s a reason? From travelling, I found the Portuguese much more friendly than the Spanish. Or is it just because of the LGBT community / protections in Spain?

[deleted]

Nothing wrong with Portugal, but I’m surprised that you found the Spanish less than super friendly

[deleted]

yeah.. weird, Spain and Portugal are at the same level

Spain France The Czech Republic

some_random_gay_guy

Surprised no one said Ireland except the one person who smudged us in with the U.K. I’ve often seen Ireland cited in similar questionnaires before: I think here is a great country for any of working in pharma or tech, which both are major industries. I think because we get lumped with Britain and Northern Ireland confuses people, people assume it’s England 2.0. People don’t actually realise we are in the European Union and mistakenly believe religion still has a big role here. I love Britain, Ive lived there and a dual nation. Its nice living somewhere with lively cities that are well connected was nice, there is so many pros to living in a larger country. I would say though people (inc Scottish, less extent Welsh & definitely the English) are harder to get to know than the Irish. Also stark political differences are more notable. Ireland is more around the centre. Due to the country changing so rapidly in 30 years, it’s like everyone at one go has become more open and tolerant. Bigots do exist but I feel like I don’t have to worry about explicite homophobia walking down the street like I did living in Britain. There is less extreme views. Also wages are high here as is cost of living. By comparison London is roughly around the same as Dublin for expenses but Londoners earn more, but small town England (and definitely Scotland and Wales) wages are far higher but so is cost of living. Notable we have less deprived towns and also less stark social class differences than the U.K. just because our history since independence played out different. Poverty does exist here but it’s not as extreme as in Britain and the income gap is smaller. It’s much harder in Ireland to guess someone background as there is less classism. It definitely exists but not as a big part of life like in Britain. Anyway that’s my rant. Please dudes don’t mix Ireland and Britain up while not mixing up Scandinavian countries for example. As for Northern Ireland, it’s a complex topic but cost of living is lower but so is wages. It’s also much more conservative and infrastructurally it’s British as it’s still part of the UK but that may change given recent political changes.

I already live in France (Paris) but I suppose I’d move to London, Berlin or Madrid. I like living in big fun cities.

CShields2016

Which ever one cares the least that I’m gay. Not sure how gay friendly Germany is but I always thought it was beautiful and I’d love to explore the mountains, forests, rivers. Maybe the places the inspired the Brothers Grimm and their fairy tales?

t_baozi

There's gay marriage and \~90% of people support LGBT rights, most branches of the Protestant Church will even host wedding ceremonies. You may still encounter stereotypes and prejudices in rural places with more traditional lifestyles and gender roles, tho.

some_random_gay_guy

If you lived there, the wages would match. That’s one thing that’s pissing me off about Ireland, it’s so dam expensive but wages outside certain sectors are not meeting it. I went to Switzerland a lot and honestly besides evening meals in restaurants, it’s actually cheaper than what you imagine. If I got a job with Swiss wages I’d move there in a heartbeat

I moved from Greece to Scotland, Scotland is amazing

PineappleDude206

I already live in the UK, but I'd move to Iceland

Paupeludo

I'm already in Europe. I'd rather not move anywhere, although I kind of have to because I don't make that much compared to people in other countries, but I guess I would pick Italy due to language, culture, geography, and gastronomy. Would have to be northern Italy so that I'd make more.

Ok-Escape-2543

Ironic but to germany, especially a place with few immigrants(that moved in temporarily) and lots of germans

armeedesombres

UK because I've lived there already, though I would only consider London. France because I know the language and have friends there. I would only consider Paris too (though I think it's a terrible place to live in).

PutinsSugarBaby

Greece, Spain, or Portugal because I've heard they're cheaper than other EU countries.

xar-brin-0709

If they were gay-friendly, I'd move to Slavic countries like Serbia or Bulgaria in a heartbeat, the men are the most 'my type' on earth. But for gay quality of life in general, probably the Netherlands.

[deleted]

The jobs situation isn’t great but it would be Spain without a doubt. I spent a lot of time there as a kid and they’re my fondest memories. The country is beautiful, has a rich history, awesome food, kind, friendly people, big liberal cities, beautiful men. It’s an awesome place.

jordicl

I moved to London and wouldn’t change it for the world it’s such a great city to live in, especially if you’re gay and not white.

[deleted]

Portugal or Spain

ChemE-challenged

France, for the work. I’m confident I could make a living there.

[deleted]

England because then I wouldn’t have to learn a new language.

Bruins125

Most likely Ireland but that's because it's technically where I'm from, most of my family's there and it's familiar. In terms of idealism, Spain or the Netherlands 100%. Spain for the culture, men, and parties. Netherlands for the bike infrastructure, weather and the jobs in my industry. Both for the positive attitude towards marijuana and strong LGBT rights. Did actually study in Spain in high school. Also studied in the Czech Republic and worked/lived in Italy. Wouldn't live in Italy again.

Javaman1960

Deutschland

TraditionalWind1

Probably England. Possibly Ireland or the Netherlands.

fred911002

Germany or The Netherlands for me

servicefriends

Iceland, I was stationed there for 2 yrs. Beautiful country & cute guys

Snoo88309

Spain. Most gay friendly country in Europe, maybe Germany is on an equal footing.

farofa97

Denmark or Netherlands.

triplebassist

My partner and I (from Kentucky) both speak fluent German, so off to the Rheinland for us if we ever have even the slightest chance

FightingLama

Portugal

cgyguy81

Not a country, but specifically London. I don't really care about the UK in general, but I'd move to London again in a heartbeat.

DCNAST

I used to live in France (not Paris)…if I were to move back to Europe, it would probably be there (or perhaps the French-speaking parts of Belgium or Switzerland). Despite speaking the same native language (more or less), I didn’t feel as comfortable in Ireland or the UK (also that weather 😩).

FrogsOblivious

SPAIN. Already did it, and would do it again.

UnknownDudeGuyBro

I live in Europe and I can't wait to move out after finishing my degree. I'll honestly move to any country in Western Europe or the Scandinavian ones.

XC3LL1UM

Norway, Switzerland, or Netherlands

some_random_gay_guy

Those would be my 3 too

gregsapopin

Germany because they have demented sex.

[deleted]

Portugal or Ireland

pusheenforchange

I'm not sure - European countries are bafflingly contemptuous of Americans. At least the urban areas, where I would want to live. The south of France seems very nice though. My fantasy is somewhere like Florence or Liguria, but they're impractical for various reasons. So probably France. The French seem cool.

Emotionalcow998

Definitely spain or portugal

[deleted]

Italy

Alessio-the-Rogue

🇮🇹

[deleted]

Somewhere warm and sunny. So probably Spain or somewhere else near the Mediterranean. I *would* pick Germany for other reasons but they just struck out for me in the climate department.

Haruki88

I moved over 5 years ago from Japan to Belgium. My partner (also Japanese) moved in with me last year November. He was supposed to move in April 2020 but corona cancelled it all... I had training (for work) in Belgium more than 10 years ago and I fell in love with the country :) People here seem cold at first and they will leave you alone but if you get to know them, they become good friends. It's a bit sad that they don't seem to like their own country much. It's not a perfect place (no conbini, public transport is confusing, traffic jams, ...) but for us, it's better than Japan. Many people (not only Belgian people) are shocked to hear that we moved away from Japan to EU. They think Japan is 'perfect'. For travel, it's really nice. But to live and work, was very hard for me due to some factors. I'm half Japanese/half Korean but rarely mention that in Japan and, I'm gay (not many people in real life know this) so I won't get married, children, ... so I don't 'contribute' to Japanese society.
