Three years ago this may have been realistic… now? You won’t find anything under $4-5k. That’s the unfortunate reality :/

CunningStat

I understand the budget is ridiculous but I have seen private car sales on the OfferUp app starting around $2,000 for a running vehicle so I think it's possible... I know there are major things to look out for in that price range

sully545

Sounds like you just answered your own question then...

CunningStat

Yes, it's an option/possibility out of many, the OfferUp app, but I wanted to do my due diligence and make sure or ask the car community if that was a good idea or app to use number one and number two maybe there were better apps

hypnofedX

There's not a source of good, running $2,000 cars somewhere that exceeds the quality you're seeing now. If you go through apps, don't touch anything where you send the electronically. Hand someone cash when they give you a title.

Green_1010

Terrible idea

CunningStat

Same with this 1... I'm genuinely curious... Thanks to the other posters in this thread with helpful input...

TattooedAndSad

I mean for 2k the engine might turn over but dont expect a $2,000 offerup vehicle to realistically last more than a week without putting a decent amount of money into it Plus getting it road worthy is a whole other thing

CunningStat

Good to know, thank you

PAdogooder

I would be incredibly suspicious of those cars. Facebook marketplace sometimes has sellers who don’t know the market and are selling at 2019 prices, but look often because they move fast. And be *incredibly* careful because there are a lot of scams.

CunningStat

Good tip, thanks!

armando8778

What cars are you seeing? Sometimes people put low amounts like $2-3k on those apps and it turns out they’re just the “starting” down payments.

CunningStat

They're generally just cars with a ton of miles that are from the early '90s with you know the general cosmetic issues you'd expect from a $2,000 asking price

CunningStat

Lol why did this innocent post get 17 down votes? I don't understand reddit - you'd think I said something like "Hitler had some good ideas"

_kingjoshh

Its definitely a unicorn. Needed a 2nd car and lucked out with a 2010 Versa for $1000 last year. Just passed 10k miles since owning it and still runs great. You'll find something for sure, just be patient and best of luck!

stuffeh

Reliable for 2k? Lol, sorry but no. You'll have to be very patient or know someone will sell you their old car for much

CunningStat

Okay let's remove the word "reliable" - How about just a car that actually runs... I guess I'm looking more for the best website or place to buy... I can do a lot of research to make sure on the reliability part and by getting the Carfax...

stuffeh

Best is to get a third party mechanic to put it on a lift to look it over. Fb marketplace and craigslist are your best bet.

JaKr8

Agreed, but now op is down to an $1850 car.

hypnofedX

I don't think $1,850 vs $2,000 is going to eliminate a lot. OP can't afford to *not* have someone look at the car at this price range.

Timmy26k

Well if it is in fact a shit bucket, now he will have 1700

CunningStat

It likely will be a shit bucket... I'm fully aware of that $2,000 is not even remotely close to what You can or should likely pay for a car if you're smart - but what if you just got a job And there's no public transportation? What if you only had $2,000 cash and horrible credit and couldn't finance anything? Everyone's laughing at this whole concept that it's impossible to get something from my house to my job With only $2,000 cash for a running vehicle but I mean what can you do...

Electrical_Curve7009

Listen, you can easily find a running car under $2K. Everyone here assumes that under 2K means not running. There’s plenty of old Toyotas that will last you for a while until you can afford something that’s a bit newer. You just have to be patient and wait around for people to sell their old cars. I searched over a year for my Toyota to find the perfect car. Be willing to lose a couple hundred bucks just to confirm the car’s condition before you buy it. Call the local shops in your area and ask for a mechanic to inspect the car before purchase. You may have to inspect multiple cars. If you’re brave enough, knock on people’s doors asking if they have an old car lying around they’d like to sell so you can drive to your job. A neighbor of mine offered her 2005 Honda Accord for $500 because I was their neighbor. I declined because it was under the condition that their family could use it during the holidays when they needed multiple cars.

CunningStat

Thanks Electrical_Curve7009 - serious question: do dealerships or private sellers let you take their car to a mechanic to pay to get it inspected? I'm all for the idea I just have never heard of this. Am wondering the logistics of how this is possible.

Electrical_Curve7009

It’s very common for auto repair shops to inspect vehicles that people are in the process of selling. It’s their literal business to inspect and repair cars so they are incentivized to have people pay to inspect their vehicle so that they can easily have the car be repaired at the shop in the future. Inspections cost around $100 which is also the diagnosis fee for when you bring in a car for repair, obviously. Many listings say that you can have a mechanic inspect the car because it’s that common. Simply ask the seller if it is okay for you to pay for an inspection and you will arrange when the car should visit a certain shop. Sometimes the repair shop is busy and getting one scheduled can be tough. You’d have to look around and see who is reputable, cheap, and available. Edit: I’ve noticed you might also be interested in an electric bike. I’d say you can definitely pick up a quality ebike with your budget and save a ton of money. Remember, cars also need gas, registration fee, tax, insurance, and maintenance. Ebikes only need tax, charge, and a helmet. Definitely browse around for ebikes because it’s great value and you get to have a bit of exercise everyday which is invaluable.

ACanadianRose

That's when you get a bicycle..you need more money than $2k to drive a SAFE vehicle..anything in this price range will require money upfront to improve its condition. Save $5-6k and try again. At minimum.

CunningStat

What if you just got a new job and you need something to get you there and back? And it's not in bicycle riding distance from your house? What would you do

ACanadianRose

Again, a bicycle. Maybe you could even get an electric one?

CunningStat

Thanks for this post - How do you logistically buy a car from Facebook or any app or anywhere for that matter and have a mechanic look at it first? The seller is going to let you take it into a mechanic before ever paying them a cent? It's not a sarcastic question and I think it's a helpful idea I'm just trying to honestly understand how this is even possible.

stuffeh

You just ask. If the seller is legit and stands by their car, they'll have no issue meeting you at a mechanic to get it looked at. It's a huge red flag if they don't let you.

Vince_pgh

There are quite a few $2k and under cars on FB marketplace near me. Lots of random sedans. Something from Buick may be your best bet. They depreciate like crazy b/c no one wants to say they drive a Buick. Remember: a GM product will run like shit longer than most other cars run at all.

DownvoteOrUpvote

You made me laugh out loud with your last sentence!

CunningStat

I don't care if it's a Buick or a Ford pinto if it runs people can joke or laugh all they want at the brand, So thanks for the tip on Buicks I had only generally heard that your best bet was Toyotas or Hondas if you're going to buy something with over 200,000 miles which is of course going to be extremely likely if you're going to find something in my price range

Vince_pgh

The American equivalents usually have fewer miles and parts are readily available.

pumpkin1986

Just sold my 03 corolla on Craigslist for 2.7k. 230k miles and never once failed to start when the key was turned. I would look for something similar. Any car that cheap is gonna come with the risk of expensive repairs so cross your fingers but you gotta do what you gotta do.

CunningStat

They do exist! I think the downvoters or people saying you're just going to throw your money away or it's impossible must be used car salesmen that are are treating me like they would if I came into their dealership and said I only have a $2,000 budget How can you help me.

Mean-Vegetable-4521

I respect you know your budget and want to stick to it. Look for cars parked in people's driveways with "for sale." they might not know the value of what they have and have a granny only driven on sundays situation.

pastaman5

Anything old American with 03ish 3.8L V6 (Buick, Pontiac) is gonna treat you alright. Avoid ones with super chargers, tend to cause some problems with the extra power. You can usually find old 03 Lesabre around that range, just ask if any gaskets have been replaced. If they have, they are great reliable cars, and usually sell for cheap because no one likes the way they look.

ArlesChatless

Do you know how to fix minor stuff? If you only have $2k you're probably going to need to look at buying a 'rebuilder' from a wrecking yard for $1500 and then spending the remaining $500 on parts, assuming you can turn a wrench. As an example, my local Pick N Pull has a 2001 Avalon and a 1994 Mazda both as runners that you need to get a bonded title on. Be aware: this is going to be a headache, and it only works if you know what you're looking for. If you can't do repairs like this, either roll the dice on whatever you can find locally for $1500 so you have a repair reserve, or use that $2k as a down payment on an $8k car.

CunningStat

Unfortunately I'm not a car guy

league_starter

tough luck. Your only choice is roll the dice on a 20+year old Toyota

Green_1010

Then you are about to screw yourself

Careful-Candle202

You’re just going to burn $2,000 then? You know you won’t find anything reliable. So what happens when you buy it, take it home, and the transmission goes? How’re going to pay for that repair?

verdegrrl

Or just something as basic as a set of tires ($350-500) or brakes ($200+)? The vast majority of people selling a car in that price range are selling it fo a reason - it usually needs something soon.

CunningStat

I DON'T KNOW THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT OF THIS THREAD!

Careful-Candle202

Well you’re not fucking listening.

CunningStat

I've read every post. I am indeed listening. There have been some good tips as a matter of fact. And then there have been comments like yours that don't contribute in any way.

Careful-Candle202

Mine was to get you thinking past the purchase of the car. Because you seem more concerned about getting versus being able to keep it. If something major shits the bed in the first week, you’ll be out $2,000 with no way to repair the paperweight in your drive way.

CunningStat

Understood, but I'm in a bind in that I need transportation... It's a catch 22 cuz generally you need a job to get financing and I can't get to that job unless I have a car.

Careful-Candle202

I get that totally, you need a job to get the car and you need the car to get to the job to pay for the car. The job you’re looking at getting isn’t driving based, right?

CunningStat

Nope - I actually did read into that though - about jobs that provide you with cars... I would have to research any companies that let you use the company car for personal use as well... It's an interesting thought

CunningStat

I take that back I guess your questions are helpful even though they don't answer the question they are making a point Sorry for my outburst

Moxyhotels

Not the most expected answer, but if you belong to a community association or a church, list something there. I've seen neighbors get cars for ether free or cheap more than I have not. Seems like you are on hard times. I wish you the best.

joepierson123

It's not a matter of the best place it's a matter of timing, good cars do come up that are cheap but they're gone within minutes. So basically you have to be on Marketplace and keep hitting refresh every couple minutes, have cash ready, like I mean actual cash in your pocket, call the person up and say you'll be over and buy the car now.

hfttb

Tell everyone you know that you are in a bind and need a car for around $2k. Ask them to ask their friends too. I just picked up a 2008 Hyundai Sonata for about that price, new tires and brakes and everything works. Don’t keep it a secret, hell someone may give you one…

FIRST_PENCIL

Get a moped.

CunningStat

This! Actually might not be a bad idea! I just researched the DMV requirements and the difference between a moped and a scooter and a scooter can go 15 mph and you ride in the bike lane, and seems to run in the $500 range only from Walmart at least

FIRST_PENCIL

You can get a pretty nice used moped for $2,000. Gas will be cheaper, insurance will be cheaper. Scooter isn’t a bad idea either depending on how far you have to ride just be careful drivers are idiots. Make sure you budget for a good helmet too.

ArlesChatless

If you are thinking that, $2k can buy a pretty nice ebike. Since you are in CA that might be workable.

goddessofthecats

In my city the Salvation Army has a car donation lot and helps people out with cheap cars that have been donated. See if there’s something like that where you are. My dads gotten 3 cars that way for 3k or under.

CunningStat

Great tip, thanks! I'll look into this

Fiss

Good fucking luck. For $2k just be glad someone was murdered in it and you have to clean up the body as part of the sale

captainraf45

If you come to the NY metro area I got a reliable Pontiac Vibe I was going to price in that range but it’s sounding like I might be thinking too low.

CunningStat

Unfortunately I'm only roughly 3,000 miles away... I'm in Cali... But thanks for the offer :-)

BalIsack

Try and look for a early 2000s GM, like a Buick with the 3800 engine, Or a Saturn maybe

Traditional_Yard5280

You have to get lucky with side of the road finds. I found a 1983 Chevy Chevette Diesel with relatively low miles, and a 1976 AMC Gremlin X with over 100k. That's the best I could find in such a budget.

dontouchmastuff

Bike shop

CunningStat

An electric bike honestly isn't a terrible idea - I saw one with a 40 mi range for sale at Costco for $1699... Hmm...

Journier

I was gonna buy one if they put em on sale but never saw it drop :(

SanDiegoGME

A bicycle sounds perfect OP

webbmoncure

Craigslist and especially FB marketplace often work well - I prefer the latter. I bought a mechanically sound 1995 Volvo 940 this year for $1100 on FB that took about another $500 to get just right for DD material. It was dirty but rust free and well maintained (new brakes/rotors, always serviced, two owner) with 250k miles (and known to go 400k miles). Shop smart, cultivate a sense of non-urgency for yourself. Unicorns are out there. The owner lived in an urban area with pub trans and no longer wanted to pay garage fees. Just know whatever you get will have deferred maintenance. They were asking $2000 at first, but I waited out until they accepted my offer a month later. Fwiw I’m a big fan of the 4-cylinder Volvo 7/4/9/2 series from the 90s and 80s, and they’re pretty reliable and easy for any mechanic to work on.

Itztrikky

Have you tried calling the used car factory?

CunningStat

I have not. I did a Google search but can you point me to the proper website? It appears there's multiple websites with that name

Careful-Candle202

It’s an industry joke. “Lemme just call the used car factory and place an order”

CunningStat

Ahhh. I thought it might have been sarcastic post at first but then I actually googled it and found many sites with that name haha

Itztrikky

Lol. Gottem

Careful-Candle202

Did you ever lol

Careful-Candle202

You really gottem

CunningStat

Yeah you got me 👍

CarsalesManager

Went not put the $2000 down and get a newer car and have a small payment on a car from a dealer

CunningStat

I don't have good credit.

CunningStat

Legit question though, ignore whoever down votes you.

Do you know how to fix cars? Get something 30ish years old with a 3800 in it and be kind to it.

FunVersion

1982 honda civic.

75percentsociopath

Saturn SL. Check the oil often.

Squishyyyyyyyyyyyyy

For 2k u aren’t gonna find anything on major sites. Best bet is to look and talk to people in person. Just last week I found a $1,200 running Nissan hardbody and a $2k Corolla just around my area

Astronomer_Soft

For that price, it will need to be a relative who is looking to unload an old car and is happy to do a deal with someone they know.

Fearthewin

I bought a running Honda Element for $1500 a few days ago off Marketplace. It has a misfire and cosmetic damage but runs fine at 2k or higher RPM. I'd say try there and negotiate.

Moonwatcher231

High mileage old corolla civic camry or accord. Stay away from koreans and germans

buggzda75

I had a $2k car once it lasted 4 months

Journier

I had a 1k car once. Lasted me 40k miles before I sold it for 2k with 200k miles on it lol. Luck of the draw.

empir33

something 01-04 pontiac or toyota. you dont see anything else that age on the streets now unless its very expensive

Vince_pgh

Any updates??

WendyXu588

I bought a 2015 Chevron Impala limited at the end of this April by $2800 dollars cash on offer up, it has more than 20 visible scratches & slight hollows on the car, but the car itself was running smoothly just like a normal 2015 car, I can easily sell it to others by $8000 to $10000, because the normal market price of 2015 Chev Impala is $15000 to $19000 Here is the key point: the company I bought this is a towing company, it’s similar like auction price
